LATEST NEWS & WHAT’S BREWING
A FRONT LINE VIEW
FROM PAUL MATTHEWS
In March 2017, I was lucky enough to move into the role
of Sales Director here at Timothy Taylor’s.
My team’s role is to ensure we support customers who
sell our brands in the licensed trade and keep them on
the bar. We also talk to potential customers who do not
stock our brands in the hope we can prove to them that
their consumers want Timothy Taylor’s brands on the
bar and will keep coming back for more.
Sounds easy in theory doesn’t it? A marketplace that
has seen pub numbers continually fall has also seen
the number of breweries in the UK double in the last
5 years. There are now 66% less pubs than 35 years
ago. Combined with the increase in breweries, this is
creating a major oversupply in beer, driving the price
down. Our challenge then is not as easy as it sounds,
considering we are selling a premium brand at
premium prices.
One of the biggest surprises I have also found in the
cask ale market, unlike any other category, is little
evidence of any pricing ladder! As Tim Dewey would
say, with his extensive spirits background, you don’t
expect to buy Grey Goose vodka for the same price as
Smirnoff - but this is not always the case with ale.
So how do we do it?
My team have full knowledge of all our brands; they
understand the premium nature of our ingredients
and the unique tastes they deliver. They understand
the rigorous brewing process Andy Leman and his
team undertake to produce our beer. They are fully
trained in how to keep our beers in the cellar so that
they perfectly condition and how to dispense them.
This all contributes to achieving that perfect ‘Taylor’s
Taste’ that sets our beers apart and is the reason we
have won so many awards.
More recently the team have had training on matching
beer with food and some of them are working towards
recognised accreditation in this area. They are also
up to speed with all the latest research in the industry
on our consumers; they know cask ale drinkers visit
the pub more often, they spend 30% more than other
customers, and bring other drinkers into the pub
with them – as long as they receive quality service
and product.
All of this means we don’t simply sell our beer to a
licensee, but offer a full consultative, partnership
service as you should expect from the best beer in the
market. We train our customer’s staff in dispense and
beer knowledge; deal with any technical issues on site;
and also offer consumer education via tasting sessions
or food matching events. This means our customers
can sell our award-winning beers with confidence
and at the right price to reflect their care and attention
to detail when delivering the product to you in
perfect condition.
It is this dedication to our business that has seen us
buck the market trend and grow our sales in the past
year. We will continue to differentiate ourselves from
the competition and reinforce the message that
everything we do is “All for that Taste of Taylor’s”.
CONISTON CHALLENGE DAY JULY 2017
Last summer, 29 teams took part in the annual Coniston Challenge day with the aim to raise crucial
funds for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. Teams arrived to a full English breakfast before heading out
to take part in a variety of exciting activities including archery, golf, 4X4 off road experience and clay
pigeon shooting. The highlight of the day was an ‘It’s A Knock Out’ style giant inflatable obstacle course
and ‘Total Wipe Out’ style game which delivered bags of laughs, much harder than it looked! Weather
and fortune was on our side and after a superb day of activities the teams returned to the hotel for a
welcome drink and hog roast dinner. The evening brought on the annual auction and a raffle was held
with plenty of fantastic prizes up for grabs including a Timothy Taylor’s Brewery Tour and lunch at the
Lord Rodney for 4 people.
Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice provides incredible palliative care and support for people with life
limiting illnesses living in Craven, Airedale, and Wharfedale as well as central, northern and western areas
of Bradford. To maintain its vital services the hospice needs to raise £2.1 million from voluntary donations
every year.
The event managed to raise an incredible £43,000 which will go towards the vital specialist care needed
not only within the walls of the Sue Ryder Manorlands hospice but also out in the community as well.
A huge heartfelt thanks must go to all who took part.
BEEF & BEER DINNER NOVEMBER 2017
Charles Dent & Reverend James Jones
Team at the Coniston Challenge
The annual Beef and Beer
Dinner organised by the
Manorlands Challenge
Committee to raise funds for
Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice
in Oxenhope, was again a
huge success with the 241
guests digging deep to raise an
amazing amount for its
local services.
The dinner took place on
Thursday 9th November at
the Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley.
As with previous years, guests
enjoyed prime sirloin of beef
donated by Dovecote Park near
Pontefract, producers of finest
British beef, complemented by
Taylor’s cask ales donated
by ourselves.
This year’s guest speaker was the Right Reverend James Jones KBE, former Bishop of Liverpool and
chair of the Hillsborough Independent Panel. Master of Ceremonies was Charles Dent, Chairman of
Timothy Taylor’s; with an extremely successful auction conducted by professional auctioneer
Richard Waring.
Commenting on the evening, Head of Hospice Fundraising, Rachel Cunningham said, “We are once
again delighted with the success of this dinner that has now become an important date on our fundraising
calendar. The Manorlands Challenge Committee have raised almost £950,000 in their 13 year history,
and we are so very grateful to them all for their generosity, energy and support.”
A staggering total of £44,000 was raised on the night through ticket sales, lucky dip raffle, quiz and an
auction, thank you to all who put their hand in their pockets to help.

TAYLOR MADE RANGE
For the past year, Andrew Leman and his busy team of four Heriot-Watt trained brewers have
been experimenting, developing and tinkering with different malts, hop varieties and styles
of beer in our five-brewer’s-barrel micro-brewery. They’re now very excited to
release three small-batch, special edition beers for our dedicated followers
and to attract new drinkers to try the Timothy Taylor’s brand.
The first is Poulter’s Porter, named after Private Poulter (below), a former employee
who was awarded the Victoria Cross. This beer has notes of
chocolate, coffee and liquorice appealing to a newer generation
of drinkers looking for more defined flavour in their beers.
Cook Lane IPA is named after the site of our first brewery
in Keighley. This IPA has a more gentle flavour
profile than many of the extreme, hoppy IPAs.
And finally 1858 Brown Ale, named after the year we started
brewing, a modern, beefed up take on a brown ale. Our brewers
wanted to introduce a higher gravity, easier drinking version
of this popular style of beer.
All are contemporary, full-flavour beers with the timeless and
inimitable Taylor’s Taste that you love. These superb beers
will be available on draught from the following dates:
Poulter’s Porter now until the 28th February 2018.
Cook Lane from 1st March 2018 until the 30th June 2018.
1858 from 1st July 2018 until 31 October 2018.
All are available all year round in 330ml bottles as 12 packs
and as three bottle gift packs, from our web shop.
www.timothytaylorshop.co.uk/category/beer
Also look out for them in supermarkets later this year.
For information on the styles of these beers visit:
SPILSBURY FUGGLES
Over the last few decades, there has been a rapid decline in the acreage of Fuggles hops
grown in the UK. This is due to the susceptibility of Fuggles to Verticillium Wilt, a soil
borne fungus that can be catastrophic and eventually destroy whole hop fields. This had
been a real concern as Fuggles is used in all but two of our brews, a key ingredient to the
‘Taste of Taylor’s’.
Following a meeting at JW Spilsbury’s Farm at Orleton Court Farm in Herefordshire,
Tom Spilsbury agreed to plant two new hop yards of Fuggles, specifically for Timothy
Taylor’s. They are planted on soil that has not grown hops before, and is elevated from
the river and so flood free. This means the soil is ‘wilt’ free, and not susceptible to being
infected from land upstream. 2017 saw the first successful crop of these Fuggles, and they
will be used in our beers in 2018. And in their first year of harvest, they deservedly won
best Fuggles in the annual hop competitions.
KNOWLE SPRING NOW
IN SUPERMARKETS
The wait is over, our bottles of Knowle Spring are now available
in major supermarkets such as Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose and
Booths. Look out for it the on shelves in your local store.
Hop picking in Spilsbury
“We use a unique blend of hop varieties, perfected for nearly 160 years. This balance of
spicy aromas, floral and slightly fruity citrus notes is at the heart of the Taylor’s taste.”

BREWERY TOUR
A team from the The Rising Sun in Manchester, nipped over
the border for a brewery tour and lunch at one our Timothy
Taylor’s pubs back in mid-September. They had occasionally
stocked our beer but after a chance meeting with our Chief
Executive Tim Dewey at the Manchester Beer & Cider
Festival, have now taken it on permanently. They even had
their own Timothy Taylor’s Tour T-shirts made just for
the visit! Look out for our beers at their cracking pub in the
Spinningfields district of Manchester.

SPRUCE ‘n’ POLISH
THE WHITE HORSE, THORNTON
Late last year, The White Horse, Thornton was in line for some new
Timothy Taylor’s signage. Full of traditional character, the White Horse
sits within beautiful, open countryside above the village of Thornton, over
which are stunning views. Deep in the heart of Brontë Country, the Brontës
were born in the village below, food is served every lunchtime and evening,
with fish being a particular speciality and a big draw for customers.
Well worth a visit to this hugely historic area and real a gem of a pub.
THE WOOLLY SHEEP, SKIPTON
The Woolly Sheep’s beer garden had a spruce up last summer, with new
outdoor furniture, fresh plants and a lick of paint from top to bottom.
The canopy, outdoor heaters and lights make this a great, secluded spot
for a drink or bite to eat throughout the year. Unless you are a hardened
Yorkshire local, a cosy coat is suggested in the winter months! During the
summer, the outside bar will be open for craft beer, cocktails and cider.
FLEECE INN, HAWORTH
Haworth is the epitome of Emily Brontë’s legendary Wuthering Heights
with an enchanting mystique to the wild and rugged moors that surround
this beautiful village. Sitting on Haworth’s historic main street, the Fleece
Inn offers good old Yorkshire hospitality in the form of hearty local fare,
some of the best ales from the around the region, and now boasts 3 gorgeous
new bedrooms for those visitors that decide to stay the night and take in
the area. For beer enthusiasts, the sight of a bank of gleaming pumps on the
bar, displaying Timothy Taylor’s beers, is a stirring sight. Haworth is wellknown
as the former home town of the famous Brontë sisters, and once
upon a time Branwell, their brother, used to drink in this very pub… some
say he still does! Want to eat or stay, get in touch to reserve a table or
make a booking – they often get busy!
Dog friendly rooms are also available
HARROGATE BRASSERIE
After Timothy Taylor’s acquired the Harrogate Brasserie early in 2017,
initial works have begun to give it a makeover, starting with the bedrooms.
A selection of the rooms have been stylishly refurbished, showing off some
of the many curios the Brasserie has collected over the years. Short term we
are also improving the kitchen layout for the chefs, however plans are afoot
for a more substantial makeover of the whole Brasserie downstairs after
Easter. This will ensure it’s ready in time for guests coming to the Great
Yorkshire Show in July.
Without giving away too much, all we can say is a that there will be a few
more of our ales on the ‘new’ bar and you’ll be able to enjoy al fresco dining
in more comfort in future. So keep an eye on social media and the website
for updates. The Brasserie is now also open for lunch every day from
12pm-2.30pm. www.harrogatebrasserie.co.uk
THE WHITE SWAN, FENCE
The White Swan at Fence was in line for a spruce up in November last year;
now sporting some very smart new exterior signage. As the only Timothy
Taylor’s pub in Lancashire, they never accept second best, with a big focus
on fine ale and full flavour food. The Swan has a small seasonal menu that
changes regularly, with ingredients that are fresh and well chosen. Fronted
by Gareth, Laura and Liv with Tom Parker in the kitchen, they’ve a dream
team and a great little pub, receiving many awards over the years including
Michelin Bib Gourmand and 2 AA Rosettes awards to its name.
LETTER’S FROM AFAR
LANDLORD FOUND IN PHILADELPHIA
“I’m Brad Jones, a journalist from Yorkshire, a
dedicated follower of Taylor’s and for the past three
years or so I’ve been based in the United States. A big
fan of Taylor’s, but as you can imagine it’s something
of a rarity over here.
I own a few different Taylor’s t-shirts, and I’ve taken
to wearing them out and about in Philadelphia, in the
hope that someone would recognize the logo and clue
me in to somewhere the beer is served - a strategy that
I’ve been told was a complete long shot and would
never work.
Earlier this week, my persistence paid off, when a
fellow Englishman called out “Timothy” from across
the street and informed me of a local bar that stocks
Landlord. Later that day I managed to have my first
pint of Taylor’s outside of the U.K. The local bar is The
Dandelion in Philadelphia, now a regular haunt for me
and worth a visit if you find yourself in Philly.”
TAYLOR’S ABROAD - DENMARK
THE WHARFE - AALBORG
All six of Timothy Taylor’s Championship ales travelled across the North
Sea to ‘The Wharf ’, Aalborg in Denmark, where they held a Timothy
Taylor’s Tap Takeover in September. As proof of the passion and careful
handling of English quality beer, The Wharf has been awarded the
prestigious Cask Marque accreditation, which only two pubs outside of
England have ever been given. As the only independent pub in Aalborg,
The Wharf offers the widest selection of draught beer in Denmark.
On top of this, they also serve a long list of bottled speciality beers.
Served from their unique, custom designed coolers through 70 taps, you
can enjoy the unique British Cask Ales, Czech lagers, German weissbiers,
English ciders/Perry, Irish stouts, as well as local Danish breweries. Most of
the beers in the selection are exclusively served at the Wharf. An authentic
pub atmosphere makes you to feel welcome and to enjoy your delicious beer
in quiet surroundings, the Wharf plays evocative background music. We are
pleased to hear our beer was very well received indeed!
Also, late last year Charlie’s Bar in Copenhagen took all 6 of our fine ales in
a ‘Cask Takeover’. Charlie’s is quite a unique bar in the heart of Copenhagen
where they encourage customer to come and enjoy a taste of British culture
with our fine cask ales. They have regularly stocked Timothy Taylor’s as
guest ales for some time along with a range of other keg beers from around
the world, but for one weekend, Timothy Taylor’s brewery fans and cask ale
enthusiasts had all six of our ales on tap. We are proud to say yet another
first for a Danish pub to serve all our ales outside of the UK at one time.
MATCHING NIGHT
We were pleased to hold a fabulous, sell-out Food & Beer Pairing evening
in September last year at our recent acquisition the Harrogate Brasserie.
Celebrating National Cask Ale Week, the Brasserie created 5 superb local
dishes to match with 5 different beers. Hosted by renowned Yorkshire Beer
Sommelier Annabel Smith, guests learned all about food and beer matching,
what a beer sommelier does and how to find a beer to suit their palate.
Guests also met Andrew Leman, Head Brewer from Timothy Taylor’s and
learnt more about what makes the unique ‘Taste of Taylor’s’. The evening
was thoroughly enjoyed by the guests, special thanks to General Manager
François Morillon and Head Chef Chris Dunn and his team who created
This year marks the 160 th Anniversary of Timothy
Taylor’s Brewery. Timothy Taylor established his
original brewery in the centre of Keighley on Cook
Lane in 1858. Following this, in 1863 Timothy Taylor
purchased our current Knowle Spring site, moving his
brewery to take advantage of the superb spring water.
The principle of not accepting second best was
laid down and remains with us to the present day.
This means that the very finest ingredients are
used to brew the best possible beers.
In honour of this landmark year look out for our
1858 beer, part of our Taylor Made range,
available in bars from July 2018 and bottles now.
‘BOBS’ TAYLOR VISIT TO SITE
‘Bobs’ Taylor is the great granddaughter of Timothy Taylor and, at a
sprightly 94 years young, came to visit the brewery back in September
2017. Bobs, who was an art student in 1952, designed the original
Landlord bottle label featuring the jolly Landlord in a red waistcoat.
Whilst much has changed at the brewery since then, Landlord itself
endures, as popular as ever. She enjoyed her visit to the offices
with our Chief Executive Tim Dewey and Finance Director
John Varley, followed by lunch at one of Timothy Taylor’s
pubs, The Grouse at Oldfield.
Tim Clarke, Tim Dewey and Charles Dent (Far right)
CHAIRMAN, CHARLES DENT RETIRES
Charles Dent chose to retire as Chairman of Timothy Taylor’s in December
last year. Charles had been with Taylor’s for 37 years and a special
retirement meal was held by the Board for him at Rudding Park, Harrogate
in November to celebrate his career with Timothy Taylor’s, first as
Managing Director then as Chairman. A whole company retirement
party was also held for Charles in Keighley in December.
Charles commented “I have been enormously privileged to work at Timothy
Taylor’s and whatever has been achieved has only been possible with the
support of all the very special members of this Company and its products,
together with our loyal customers and suppliers.” Charles becomes
Honorary President of Timothy Taylor’s and we are sure we won’t
be seeing the last of him at the Brewery.
Tim Dewey with ‘Bobs’ Taylor
JOHN GROGAN, MP FOR KEIGHLEY
John Grogan MP visited Timothy Taylor’s brewery in October last year,
hosted by our Chief Executive Tim Dewey. John enjoyed a tour round the
brewery followed by lunch at the Lord Rodney, Keighley, where Tim and
John discussed a number of issues faced by the brewing and pub industry.
On the agenda was the high levels of beer duty and pros & cons of
Small Breweries Relief. John, who is vice-chairman of the All Party
Parliamentary Beer Group and the Food and Rural Affairs Committee, said
he would be lobbying on the industry’s behalf, and is among over 50 MPs
supporting an initiative calling for an annual £1,000 business rate relief to
help support pubs in England and a freeze on beer duty.
Tim commented “It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet John
and give him a tour of the site,” he added. “His Parliamentary Beer Group
role has given him extensive experience of the opportunities and challenges
facing the brewing and pub industry and I appreciated his generosity of time
in giving me the chance to share some of my concerns with him. I look
forward to working constructively with him for the benefit of the industry
and Keighley”.
TOM HARGREAVES
RETIRES
One of our longest standing employees
in the Brewery, Tom Hargreaves,
retired after 26 years of service. Tom
started as a fork lift driver, when we
acquired our first fork lift truck in 1991
and suddenly realised we didn’t have a
driver for it! Since then he has worked
in the brew house and fermentation
rooms, and has been responsible for
beer transfers, particularly tanker
filling operations for our bottled beers.
Tom has been a big part of our success
over the years, during a period of
time that has seen us progress from
a small local company to a nationally
renowned brewery, with draught beers and bottles sold all over the UK. We
thank Tom for his hard work and loyalty and hope he enjoys his retirement.
ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
As our farmers know all too well:
no pain, no grain.
They say nothing worth having comes easy. Unfortunately for
our farmers that’s true of the barley we use to brew our beers.
We use a classic variety called Golden Promise, grown to our
own unique specification. The biscuity, golden malt it produces
is the perfect partner to our natural spring water, and is vital
to Landlord’s depth and delicate balance of flavour. It’s also a
type of barley that’s notoriously hard to grow, and our exacting
ingredient and a real challenge even for experienced farmers.
All for that taste of Taylor’s
158 years of brewing
It’s true. If you visit our brewhouse in Keighley, Yorkshire,
the palate. Our five full-time brewers start and finish every
brew of our beer, carefully tasting and testing as they go. And
when you have a beer as finely balanced as Landlord, you
need brewers with finely tuned noses and taste buds. It’s a
small sacrifice for a great sip of beer.
A ROUND UP OF
NEWS FROM OUR
CUSTOMERS
AROUND THE UK
We love it when stockists share their news and successes
with us. Here are a few from around the country:
York Tap, York
Landlord Mark Slade serves Taylor’s beer as
it is a quality product and a trusted brand that
customers know well. He notes “Landlord is
at the top of the list as the best seller out of
our top 6 ales.”
www.yorktap.com
Coachman Inn, Snainton
Ian Ray stocks Landlord as “it’s a really good
beer, and more of it is sold than when we stock
other Yorkshire ales. It always looks nice and we
really like the glassware.”
Ian and his wife have only been at the pub
for 18 months. The pub wasn’t really a real
ale pub, but Ian has been very pro-active
with getting ales on the bar and he feels it
has certainly added to his business,
attracting more customers.
www.coachmaninn.co.uk
The Bull at Broughton
“We recently started to stock Landlord, it’s the
most sought after beer and frequently asked for
by customers. Landlord is the best selling out of
all other Yorkshire beers stocked on our bar”.
“Landlord is a well-known beer and often
recognised on the bar, people are pleased to see it.
The pub has had people make a special journey to
sample the Landlord once they’ve heard about
it on social media.”
passion for creating and procuring the
How do our beer sales compare to
other ales at the pub, what is the
barrelage rate per week?
products in the pub as a whole. On an average week we sell anything
between four and six casks.
