Spring Creek 

gives back to the 

community 

Giving back to the community is something 

most people aim to accomplish, but 

it takes time and commitment; however, 

that was no challenge for the Activities 

department at Spring Creek Nursing and 

Rehab, located in Joliet. 

The initial goal of the department was 

to collect as many warm coats, hats and 

gloves as possible to donate to those less 

fortunate; however, with such severe 

weather conditions, the activities department 

was determined to contribute more. 

During the Activity Professionals 

Week — a week dedicated to appreciate 

the hard work of Activity employees — 

the Spring Creek Activities Department 

selflessly gave back to the staff and facility 

residents, and even utilized that time 

to immerse themselves in giving back to 

the community. 

The Activities staff reached out to two 

local homeless shelters in the community: 

MorningStar Mission and Daybreak 

Center. In addition to the Activities staff, 

numerous staff individuals, including Administrator 

Tasha Mitchell, drove to the 

missions and distributed hot soup and 

sandwiches, various toiletries, and all of 

the donated winter gear that was collected 

for those in need. 

“I am proud to be a part of Spring 

Creek,” said one of the Spring Creek 

physical therapists. “They show their passion 

and compassion for our residents and 

community every day.” 

Spring Creek Nursing and Rehab is a 

Medicare/Medicaid-participating facility 

that provides top-of-the-line skilled 

nursing services. In addition to providing

Victorian Village resident returns to active life after fall thanks to Marionjoy 

Judy Ludkey moved into Victorian 

Village a little more than a 

year ago. It was close to her family, 

and she loved the friendliness 

of the Homer Glen retirement 

community – it was a perfect fit. 

Retirement living is just one of 

the services at Victorian Village, 

which also offers townhouses, 

assisted living, memory care, 

skilled nursing and rehab all on 

the same campus. 

Judy is independent and lived 

an active life, so she didn’t expect 

to need any of the other services 

— at least, not so soon. 

But then the unexpected happened. 

“I was climbing a ladder to reach 

something on a high shelf, and I fell 

and hit my head,” she said. 

The next day, when she started 

experiencing vertigo, staff and 

family convinced her she needed 

to go to the hospital. After a 

short stay, her doctor said she 

would need rehab until the vertigo 

went away. 

“I had a few different choices 

where I could go, but I chose to 

go [to Victorian Village] because 

I know how good Marianjoy is,” 

Judy said. 

Victorian Village Health and

its therapy right to the campus. 

Judy had physical therapy and 

occupational therapy right there 

where she lived, in Marianjoy

Now Judy is back at home at 

Victorian Village’s retirement 

living with no trace of vertigo.

Szczodry specializes

graduated from Medical 

University of Warsaw, 

Poland, where he was a

Entertainment 

celebrates 25 years 

Hard to believe it’s been 

25 years since the talented 

husband-and-wife team of 

Phil and Amy branched out 

from their music ministry 

beginnings at St. Christopher 

Church to Phil & Amy 

Musical Entertainment and 

St. Christopher Tours. 

With St. Christopher 

being the patron saint of 

travelers, it was probably 

meant to be. It’s been a 

busy, eventful 25 years as 

more children, performances 

and trips have been added. 

The family is growing. 

Musical appearances 

this past month included 

afternoon entertainment at 

the Mokena Community 

Public Library, as well as 

in Oak Forest. Phil & Amy 

feature popular hits, including 

Broadway shows 

and movies, old familiar 

standards, patriotic tunes, 

and Christmas favorites, 

depending on the season. 

No matter the selection, audiences 

are found clapping 

their hands, tapping their 

toes and singing along. 

In the past year, the 

popular recording artists 

sang to sold-out crowds 

at White Fence Farm and 

Starved Rock Lodge, as 

well as other venues. If you 

missed any of their shows, 

don’t fret as they are back 

in 2018. Scheduled for this 

Aug. 6-9, Phil & Amy will 

appear in luncheon shows 

at Starved Rock Lodge 

with motor coach transportation 

being made available. 

Their multi-talented 

daughter, Lucie, will join 

them for the August shows. 

Lucie recently had her first 

single “Never Knew” released 

on iTunes and all 

digital formats. Not to be 

left out, Phil and Amy’s 

10-year-old son, Luke, 

made his debut in December 

at their Starved Rock 

Broadway/Christmas performances, 

adding amazing 

bass guitar to the show. 

The musical entertainment 

can’t be beat, and motorcoach 

transportation is often 

available. 

Also for 25 years, Phil 

and Amy have hosted theater 

outings, day excursions 

and overnight motor 

coach tours of three to nine 

days. This June, they will 

host their travelers to Yellowstone 

and Grand Teton 

National Parks along with 

their annual Mackinac Island 

getaway and fall visit 

to Michigan’s Little Bavaria, 

Frankenmuth. Oneday 

trips include: “Jesus 

Christ Superstar” at the 

Lyric Opera (May); “Cabaret” 

at the Paramount in 

Aurora (March); “Hamilton” 

at CIBC Theater 

(March); The Rt. 30 Lincoln 

Highway Tour (May); 

and, of course, the many 

Starved Rock Lodge Luncheon/Show 

dates.

again, feature Cape Cod 

and the New England Islands.

opens new, state-of-the-art wing 

Lemont Nursing and 

Rehabilitation is proud to

wing. The 26-bed 

Sycamore unit officially 

opened in December 2017 

and has been a huge success

clothes dryers safer

Most people know they need to clean 

out their dryer lint tray between each 

cycle, but what lurks behind the wall is 

just as important for safety, avoiding 

fire traps, as well as fully efficient dryer 

performance. Joe Enzenberger, owner 

of Dryer Vent Wizard, opened his New 

Lenox-based business in 2009, and he can 

help fix those dryer issues. 

Lint is the villain – lint that has been 

allowed to build up and linger too long in 

the dryer exhaust vent. It is estimated by 

the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 

and the U.S. Fire Administration 

that 15,500 fires associated with clothes 

dryers occur annually. These fires account 

for an average of 20 deaths, 370 injuries 

and more than $88 million in property 

damage. “Failure to clean the dryer vent” 

was the leading factor cited in U.S. Fire 

Administration reports,” Enzenberger, 

whose company specializes in dryer vent 

cleaning, repair, alteration and installation, 

said, 

“It is something very few people know 

about or think about. It is the leading 

cause of dryer fires.” 

Lint accumulation also can cause dryers 

to stop working or to work inefficiently. 

A dryer vent clogged with lint can add as 

much as $18 to $24 per month to energy 

costs. 

“Improper venting causes problems, 

as well,” Enzenberger said. “The dryer 

exhaust duct and connections should be 

made of rigid metal or semi-rigid metal 

and secured with metal heat-resistant tape 

rather than duct tape. I often find plastic 

or foil accordion-type material, which can 

easily trap lint and is more susceptible to 

kinks and crushing.” 

Warning signs include: 

• Clothes are taking more than one cycle 

to dry, especially jeans and towels. 

• No lint visible on lint screen. 

• Dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle. 

• Clothes have moldy smell after dry cycle. 

• Clothes are very hot after a dry cycle 

• The top of your dryer is hot to the touch 

while running. 

• There’s excess lint left on your clothing. 

“This has been a consumer education 

process, but it’s hard to get the word out,” 

Enzenberger said. “Most don’t call until 

they have a serious problem with their 

dryer.” 

He suggests people treat clothes dryers 

as a household item in need of regular 

maintenance. Consumers can protect 

dryer performance and promote safety 

by cleaning the lint screen between each 

use, ensuring the connection between the 

dryer and wall is made of compliant material 

and remains unkinked, and having 

the dryer exhaust duct cleaned regularly. 

Dryer manufacturers recommend inspection 

and cleaning at least annually. 

Something to watch for in spring: Birds 

will begin to build nests, and a popular 

nesting site for birds is inside dryer vent 

lines. Spring is an important time to have 

an inspection and cleaning of clothes dryers 

and dryer vent systems. 

Another important tip: Never let your 

clothes dryer run when you are out of the 

house or asleep.
