Spring Creek
gives back to the
community
Giving back to the community is something
most people aim to accomplish, but
it takes time and commitment; however,
that was no challenge for the Activities
department at Spring Creek Nursing and
Rehab, located in Joliet.
The initial goal of the department was
to collect as many warm coats, hats and
gloves as possible to donate to those less
fortunate; however, with such severe
weather conditions, the activities department
was determined to contribute more.
During the Activity Professionals
Week — a week dedicated to appreciate
the hard work of Activity employees —
the Spring Creek Activities Department
selflessly gave back to the staff and facility
residents, and even utilized that time
to immerse themselves in giving back to
the community.
The Activities staff reached out to two
local homeless shelters in the community:
MorningStar Mission and Daybreak
Center. In addition to the Activities staff,
numerous staff individuals, including Administrator
Tasha Mitchell, drove to the
missions and distributed hot soup and
sandwiches, various toiletries, and all of
the donated winter gear that was collected
for those in need.
“I am proud to be a part of Spring
Creek,” said one of the Spring Creek
physical therapists. “They show their passion
and compassion for our residents and
community every day.”
Spring Creek Nursing and Rehab is a
Medicare/Medicaid-participating facility
that provides top-of-the-line skilled
nursing services. In addition to providing
exceptional nursing care, Spring Creek
Nursing and Rehab also provides on-site
cardiac and orthopedic rehab, stroke recovery,
IV antibiotic therapy, specialized
wound care, physical therapy, occupational
therapy and speech therapy. Spring
Creek has also been awarded the Gold
Seal of Approval for demonstrating a
commitment to safe and effective patient
care through The Joint Commission.
Parenting your parent
with Alzheimer’s disease
Here’s a question:
Gradually I’m becoming a
parent for my parent; is it
normal to feel anxious and
overwhelmed?
The answer? Yes, it’s
very normal to be anxious,
feel guilty and feel
overwhelmed. In this new
role you will have many
feelings that you will work
through. Many families
find it helpful to seek support,
education and sharing
with others in the same
situation.
This is a journey that
will evolve and change
day to day as the disease
progresses. You are joining
your parent on this
journey, and the more you
understand it the easier it
will be, not only for yourself
but for your loved one,
as well.
has peace of mind for senior care
Is mom living alone? Are you concerned
for her safety? Is she able to reach
out quickly for assistance should something
happen? Do you worry dad is taking
his daily medications as prescribed or eating
nutritional meals? Is the hired home
care provider giving that special aunt all
the care, attention and socialization she
needs and deserves?
Alvernia Manor Senior Living is the
hidden gem that can ease your family’s
concerns. The mission of this unique senior
living community is to provide seniors
a loving, safe and caring home. Alvernia
Manor has a warm, homey setting;
its walls are brimming with compassion,
fulfillment and fun. Amenities include:
three daily meals plus snacks; staffed
healthcare services; 24-hour emergency
call system; housekeeping; furnished, private
rooms; and a calendar full of activities/socialization.
In addition, there are no
annuities or endowment fees. For over 45
years the School Sisters of St. Francis of
Christ the King and their dedicated staff
have cared for seniors as their own family
with respect, love and concern. Family
and friends refer to Alvernia Manor as
their “hidden gem.”
Alvernia Manor is located on a hilltop
in the southwest suburb of Lemont. With
its beautiful bluff location, the vivid colors
of the four seasons are played out annually
in panoramic view. The Little Bit
of Heaven pavilion is a favorite spot for
residents to take in the scenery and enjoy
the fresh air. Residents also have the opportunity
to enjoy several other secured
patios or common areas, relax in the privacy
of their room, or spend spiritual time
in the chapel. Keeping a resident’s body
and mind healthy and active is the goal
the Sisters and staff strive for. Games, exercise,
movies, bingo, best buddy visits,
shopping trips, entertainment and other
special outings, such as a trip to Brookfield
Zoo, are among the many activities
on Alvernia’s monthly activity calendar.
Fun times are definitely enjoyed by all.
Alvernia Manor’s Wellness Coordinators
and healthcare staff ensures residents’
medications are dispensed, vitals taken
more worries for you.
Victorian Village resident returns to active life after fall thanks to Marionjoy
Judy Ludkey moved into Victorian
Village a little more than a
year ago. It was close to her family,
and she loved the friendliness
of the Homer Glen retirement
community – it was a perfect fit.
Retirement living is just one of
the services at Victorian Village,
which also offers townhouses,
assisted living, memory care,
skilled nursing and rehab all on
the same campus.
Judy is independent and lived
an active life, so she didn’t expect
to need any of the other services
— at least, not so soon.
But then the unexpected happened.
“I was climbing a ladder to reach
something on a high shelf, and I fell
and hit my head,” she said.
The next day, when she started
experiencing vertigo, staff and
family convinced her she needed
to go to the hospital. After a
short stay, her doctor said she
would need rehab until the vertigo
went away.
“I had a few different choices
where I could go, but I chose to
go [to Victorian Village] because
I know how good Marianjoy is,”
Judy said.
Victorian Village Health and
Wellness Center’s relationship
with Marianjoy Rehabilitation
is unique, as Marianjoy brings
its therapy right to the campus.
Judy had physical therapy and
occupational therapy right there
where she lived, in Marianjoy
– a trusted name in therapy for
more than 40 years.
“I couldn’t get over how
quickly they got me better,” she
said. “The therapists over there
are just wonderful.”
Now Judy is back at home at
Victorian Village’s retirement
living with no trace of vertigo.
“I am so pleased for what they
did for me,” she said. “I’d recommend
it to anyone.”
Phil & Amy Musical
Entertainment
celebrates 25 years
Hard to believe it’s been
25 years since the talented
husband-and-wife team of
Phil and Amy branched out
from their music ministry
beginnings at St. Christopher
Church to Phil & Amy
Musical Entertainment and
St. Christopher Tours.
With St. Christopher
being the patron saint of
travelers, it was probably
meant to be. It’s been a
busy, eventful 25 years as
more children, performances
and trips have been added.
The family is growing.
Musical appearances
this past month included
afternoon entertainment at
the Mokena Community
Public Library, as well as
in Oak Forest. Phil & Amy
feature popular hits, including
Broadway shows
and movies, old familiar
standards, patriotic tunes,
and Christmas favorites,
depending on the season.
No matter the selection, audiences
are found clapping
their hands, tapping their
toes and singing along.
In the past year, the
popular recording artists
sang to sold-out crowds
at White Fence Farm and
Starved Rock Lodge, as
well as other venues. If you
missed any of their shows,
don’t fret as they are back
in 2018. Scheduled for this
Aug. 6-9, Phil & Amy will
appear in luncheon shows
at Starved Rock Lodge
with motor coach transportation
being made available.
Their multi-talented
daughter, Lucie, will join
them for the August shows.
Lucie recently had her first
single “Never Knew” released
on iTunes and all
digital formats. Not to be
left out, Phil and Amy’s
10-year-old son, Luke,
made his debut in December
at their Starved Rock
Broadway/Christmas performances,
adding amazing
bass guitar to the show.
The musical entertainment
can’t be beat, and motorcoach
transportation is often
available.
Also for 25 years, Phil
and Amy have hosted theater
outings, day excursions
and overnight motor
coach tours of three to nine
days. This June, they will
host their travelers to Yellowstone
and Grand Teton
National Parks along with
their annual Mackinac Island
getaway and fall visit
to Michigan’s Little Bavaria,
Frankenmuth. Oneday
trips include: “Jesus
Christ Superstar” at the
Lyric Opera (May); “Cabaret”
at the Paramount in
Aurora (March); “Hamilton”
at CIBC Theater
(March); The Rt. 30 Lincoln
Highway Tour (May);
and, of course, the many
Starved Rock Lodge Luncheon/Show
dates.
Upcoming in 2019 will,
again, feature Cape Cod
and the New England Islands.
Highlights include
five days at a beautiful
oceanside resort. Accommodations
and meals are
always first rate wherever
the destination. Wherever
you go with St. Christopher
Tours and hosts Phil
& Amy, you’ll see everything
there is to see in a
comfortable, relaxed manner.
With Phil & Amy, it’s
a family affair and, whether
you join a day outing or
an overnight tour, you’ll
be welcomed, having the
time of your life making
wonderful memories.
Lemont Nursing and Rehabilitation
opens new, state-of-the-art wing
Lemont Nursing and
Rehabilitation is proud to
announce the opening of
its new private rehabilitation
wing. The 26-bed
Sycamore unit officially
opened in December 2017
and has been a huge success
in the Lemont and
surrounding communities.
Lemont Nursing and
Rehabilitation has been a
part of the beautiful, historical
Lemont community
for more than 20 years.
With the majority of local
hospitals offering private
rooms, it was very important
to offer the same amenities
when patients were
transitioning to a skilled
nursing facility. A very
important element in the
healing process is getting
adequate rest so our patients
can actively participate
in therapy and return
home, not only quickly,
but safely, as well.
The Therapy Department
is overseen by Physical
Therapist, Cindy Yap.
“I have been working as
the Therapy Manager at
Lemont Center for the past
five years,” Cindy says.
“Lemont has always offered
a top notch therapy
program and I am excited
for our expansion, as it enables
our staff to elevate
the level of therapy and
care for our residents. Our
Therapists truly enjoy treating
and watching residents
exceed their goals. We are
looking forward to the continued
growth of the community
and improving the
lives of those we touch.”
Aside from the interactive
therapy lounge with
the latest advances in technology,
there are many
other amenities, such as a
tech savvy media library,
modern salon and day spa,
gourmet ice cream parlor
with handcrafted ice
cream, customized massage
therapy, and firstclass
fine dining.
The facility is overseen
by Niki Mehta, MSW,
LNHA.
“I value Lemont and the
surrounding communities
we serve,” Niki says.
“There has been a growing
demand for private
rehabilitative suites when
patients are recovering,
so I am happy to see that
we can now accommodate
their wishes. The rooms
and amenities we offer allow
our residents not only
to get the therapy they
need, but to do so with a
person centered approach.
I look forward to Lemont
Center’s growth and offering
those in need of rehabilitation
the quality care
they deserve.”
Vitality Health Systems is
proven to change lives
Vitality Health Systems has
been a source for health and
healing in New Lenox for almost
four years now.
They recently expanded into
Schaumburg and are very excited
to be helping all ages of
the community lose weight and
get healthy. Davis Jaspers is the
founder and creator of the Vitalife
program, and is passionate
about his mission.
“I want to fight chronic disease
in America,” he said. “Obesityrelated
illnesses kill more Americans
than any other diseases. In
fact, obesity is now considered to
be an epidemic in America with
70 percent of the adult population
overweight or obese.”
Jaspers is quoting the most
recent statistics put out on obesity
by the National Health and
Nutrition Examination Survey.
Seventy-five percent of America’s
medical costs will be due
to eight weight-related illnesses
that are preventable.
Glen, for example, decided to
do something about his health as
he aged. Glen is 85 years old and
came to Vitality Health Systems.
“I wasn’t sure what I was
getting into, but it sounded like
it made sense,” Glen said of his
experience during his initial
consultation at Vitality. “I was
blown away that my migraines,
which I have had since I was
in high school, went away after
only two days of being on
the Vitalife program. I learned
how to prepare healthy meals
at home, learned how to eat for
my health, and more importantly,
the staff at Vitality guided
me into excellent health. I lost
30 pounds in 40 days and have
kept the weight off for over a
year now. I am the same weight
now as I was in 1985 and went
from a 44 waist down to a 34. I
have remained migraine free all
because of the Vitalife program
at Vitality Health Systems.”
DON’T LET YOUR DRYER
START A
FIRE!
Most people know they need to clean
out their dryer lint tray between each
cycle, but what lurks behind the wall is
just as important for safety, avoiding
fire traps, as well as fully efficient dryer
performance. Joe Enzenberger, owner
of Dryer Vent Wizard, opened his New
Lenox-based business in 2009, and he can
help fix those dryer issues.
Lint is the villain – lint that has been
allowed to build up and linger too long in
the dryer exhaust vent. It is estimated by
the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
and the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated with clothes
dryers occur annually. These fires account
for an average of 20 deaths, 370 injuries
and more than $88 million in property
damage. “Failure to clean the dryer vent”
was the leading factor cited in U.S. Fire
Administration reports,” Enzenberger,
whose company specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration and installation,
said,
“It is something very few people know
about or think about. It is the leading
cause of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation also can cause dryers
to stop working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent clogged with lint can add as
much as $18 to $24 per month to energy
costs.
“Improper venting causes problems,
as well,” Enzenberger said. “The dryer
exhaust duct and connections should be
made of rigid metal or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal heat-resistant tape
rather than duct tape. I often find plastic
or foil accordion-type material, which can
easily trap lint and is more susceptible to
kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking more than one cycle
to dry, especially jeans and towels.
• No lint visible on lint screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy smell after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after a dry cycle
• The top of your dryer is hot to the touch
while running.
• There’s excess lint left on your clothing.
“This has been a consumer education
process, but it’s hard to get the word out,”
Enzenberger said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem with their
dryer.”
He suggests people treat clothes dryers
as a household item in need of regular
maintenance. Consumers can protect
dryer performance and promote safety
by cleaning the lint screen between each
use, ensuring the connection between the
dryer and wall is made of compliant material
and remains unkinked, and having
the dryer exhaust duct cleaned regularly.
Dryer manufacturers recommend inspection
and cleaning at least annually.
Something to watch for in spring: Birds
will begin to build nests, and a popular
nesting site for birds is inside dryer vent
lines. Spring is an important time to have
an inspection and cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Another important tip: Never let your
clothes dryer run when you are out of the
house or asleep.
