Crumpled City Maps, 2010 by Palomar
New Milford, CT—Here’s another design that struck us as an obvious idea, after we saw it. Emanuele
Pizzolorusso, in collaboration with Palomar, took the untearable, waterproof material known as Tyvec,
and created Crumpled City Maps. Unlike paper maps, they no longer need to be carefully folded along
increasingly fragile creases, but can be nonchalantly stuffed into your bag or pocket, rain or shine.
Crumpled City Maps are printed with impregnated inks which do not rub off even with repeated abuse.
These durable maps are eco-friendly in their reusability, They are perfect for travelers: weighing only 21
grams, they can be taken for sight-seeing in a new city, and even suggest favorite places called “soul
spots.”
Palomar is a geo-friendly manufacturer, an erstwhile maker of telescope lenses, they have branched to
support the act of discovery and exploration of the world. With Zoom Art, the pocket telescope for
viewing art and architecture, the Galileo Telescope, and the Crumpled City Maps, among others, they
are finding their “soul spot” in the world of design.
Classic toys at AMEICO: “Mein kleines Dorf”
New Milford, CT—AMEICO’s collection reaches out past the normal bounds of contemporary design with the
addition of Mein kleines Dorf, (My Little Town). But here is a successful thing, this simple toy from the 1960s, which
AMEICO’s Stephanie Kahane grew up playing in Germany. Still in production, it reminds those of us with gray on
our heads of a simpler time, of wholesome village living, of innocence before life hit the fast lane. For some, it
triggers forgotten childhood memories.
But what would kids today think of Mein kleines Dorf? What would they think as they handle the solid birch houses
with steep painted roofs, the fat cut-out sheep and the miniature train? Could these things translate into an
unexplained familiarity with European vernacular architecture later in life? Would the younger generation feel a
sense of having gone back in time to their grandparents’ or their parents’ childhoods? Mein kleines Dorf, long after
the children outgrow the set, is a lovely Christmas village to be set out on the mantel with its charm and romantic
evocations.
Produced by a respected German wooden toy firm named Goki, named after owners Gollnest and Kiesel, Mein
kleines Dorf is manufactured by fair-trade practices using non-toxic materials. Goki returns a portion of their profits
to reforestation, school-building projects, and anti-child labor campaigns. The set contains 46 pieces of solid birch
wood figurines, buildings and wall tiles in a handy box (11”x7”x2.5”). Retail price $ 32.
AMEICO was founded in 1995 by Peter and Stephanie Kahane to import, distribute and curate fine European
contemporary design products in the USA. AMEICO represents design firms such as Santa & Cole, Danese
Milano, Conmoto and Sirch, among others.

Vintage Swiss Army flashlights for the adventurous
New Milford, CT—These vintage Swiss Army flashlights were in use during Peter Kahane’s service in the Swiss
army and it’s fair to say they made a good impression on him. Although the LED flashlight has replaced the
incandescent one, AMEICO has acquired a good supply of the original decommissioned surplus units. We have
imported them and outfitted them with fresh batteries for design and specialty stores to discover.
Made with a steel case, in regulation olive green, and nothing electronic about them, the light has a clear lens for a
white light, as well as two colored filters producing a red and green light. The on/off switch also includes a Morse
code setting, for those who still remember how to signal. Open the case to access the battery, a 4.5V lantern
battery (Duracell MN1203 included), bulb and the spare bulb. Leather straps attached the lamp to various
components of the Swiss Army uniforms, probably not just to the belt.
Our supply was not issued, hence they are in very good shape compared to the “used” specimen shown in the two
images on the right, but having been stored for some 20 years since they were decommissioned, they are not
pristine, but ready for action.
IC-SAFL: Authentic Vintage Swiss Army Flashlight, 4.5” x 2.5” x 1.5”d, sold individually, new battery included,
(sorry, not boxed), available early Oct, $ 35.

Recycled glass sets for children with a story
New Milford, CT—Some of you know that Peter and Stephanie are Swiss-American and they occasionally spend time
poking around in Zürich and surrounding towns. Here’s what they found in Winterthur, Max Bill’s native city: charming sets
of glasses made of recycled green and blue beer bottles which were collected by the City of Winterthur and given new life
by a public project for the unemployed (yes, even Switzerland experienced a downturn).
The workmanship is excellent—the bottles are sorted, individually washed, cut, polished and fired. Reverse decals are
carefully placed on the glass and the piece is sandblasted. It is obvious at first sight that the makers of these glasses take
great pride in the product they create—each is a delight.
The designs on the green glass of land and sea animals were designed by a clearly talented project team. Those on the
blue glass, which wrap partially around each glass, are by Anna Luchs, a well-known children’s book illustrator in
Switzerland.
They are ideal for young children and make an excellent gift and keepsake, not to mention the story of a good thing that
came out of the great recession of 2008-2010. It’s over, right?
IC-FBBB: Ball Belt (balls included)
IC-FBSB: Single pack blade
Brodmann Blades family of products grows
New Milford, CT—Since its introduction in January 2009 at the NYGF to the 2010 ISPO in Munich, Brodmann Blades have experienced
astonishing success.
As the first major innovation to the sport of table tennis since the 1880’s, the new racket without a handle works like a glove worn on either
hand. Improved comfort, ergonomics and sensory feedback gained from playing the ball right on the hand have several advantages: greater
ball control; a faster, more intuitive game; more spin on the ball; and superior backhand. With such benefits, the game is more accessible to
beginners, persons who wish to improve 3D hand-eye coordination and those with dexterity issues, as well as to experts seeking to push the
limits of the sport to a new level.
New accessories have been introduced in the same innovative spirit. To make the game faster by keeping replacement balls handy, Fredi
Brodmann has designed the first known “Ball Belt”. The adjustable belt holds 8 balls. Sponge Pong was conceived as a beach set, and makes
use of the foam EVA cut outs from the carrying case of the original gift set—an example of smart material use. It comes with a latex sponge
ball, and ping pong ball for flexible use indoors, on the dining table, as well as a volley game to play outdoors. It makes an interesting set for
beginner table tennis players, as the softer rebound means a slower game with more ball control. To complete the line is the new ergonomic
Brodmann Blades table which can double up as a zoomy dining or conference table.
AMEICO is currently well-stocked with gift set, the single paddle, Ball Belt and Sponge Pong.
Carl Mertens releases newly designed Safari Baby Cutlery Set
New Milford, CT—Specially-designed with the toddler in mind, the Safari Baby Cutlery Set is an exciting new item
by the highly regarded firm Carl Mertens of Solingen, Germany. The set consists of two pieces. The first is an
angled spoon for the right hand to allow a youngster without the mature reach to easily bring the contents to their
mouth. The second is a pusher which is a rarely-seen utensil suitable for a child to use in the other hand to
stabilize, cut or push food onto the spoon. Designed in 2010 by the Carl Mertens team, the Safari set is embossed
with animal figures from the Carl Mertens archives dating back to the 1950s, when these designs graced another
child’s cutlery set from that era.
The Carl Mertens firm, family-owned and operated, began in 1919 in the business of knife-sharpening in the city of
Solingen known for superior stainless steel production. Its growth and survival is chiefly due to an unwavering
commitment to quality and craftsmanship, as well as a keen eye for contemporary design. Carl Mertens produces
designs from prominent German designers, as well as its own extraordinary designs.
New Milford, CT—Good design always accomplishes more than meets the eye. The Carl Mertens
its linear flattened sides facilitate cutting and dividing portions, such as lasagna
the heat-proof thermoplastic (TPE) grip prevents the spoon from sliding off the edge into
the dish.
