2017 - Stage set for the Grand Finale Most members of the Purebred Arabian fraternity will be joined by others representing various equestrian sport and allied organisations in Abu Dhabi this week to witness the ‘One World, 6 Continents-Abu Dhabi the Capital’ extravaganza which brings the curtain down on the Festival’s activities for 2017. A strong field is getting ready to contest the world’s richest race for Purebred Arabians – the Euros 1.2 million Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Crown Jewel (Group 1) on November 10, 2017 and with the event race meeting being held on Friday, a record crowd is expected to witness the big race. Also on the card are the Ladies and Apprentice finals of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak series while a new addition this year will be the HH Sheikha Latifa Bint Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Pony race with nine young jockeys in the fray. Earlier in 2017, the Festival achieved twin success when on September 4 it staged the first-ever Purebred Arabian horse race at the Monmouth Park in New Jersey and more importantly race was ‘lasix-free’ for the first time in a US race meeting! The Festival had laid down that its races in the US will be ‘lasix-free’ and for the first time ever Purebred Arabian racing showed the way competing without the use of Lasix, the anti- -bleeding medication, which is used in the US but banned in many other racing countries. Paddys Day won in Monmouth Park event and also completed a sweep of the three Jewel races to earn the US$ 150,000 bonus for the third successive year. Another huge boost for Arabian racing came when Triple Crown-winning jockey Victor Espinoza and Paddys Day demolished their 11 other rivals in the Grade I, $100,000 HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley Award Stakes at Santa Anita race course on April 1, 2017. In a rare honour accorded by a US racing body, the Arabian Racing Association of California (ARAC) and the Texas Arabian Breeders Association (TABA) have accorded Honorary Membership to the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival. The ARAC also honoured Ms Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the Festival for her efforts in promoting the Festival events which eventually has led to a boost for Purebred Arabian racing in the US. On the Endurance front, the Festival introduced the ‘Endurance in Capitals Series’ while all other annual events like in the previous years were held both in the UAE and abroad. Algeria became the latest country to play host to races organized by the Festival while Lebanon staged for the first time a Festival-supported Horse Show. The Festival also took part in the FEI Endurance Forum in Barcelona, Spain. Naziq was named the ‘Best 4-year-old filly’ in the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley (International) Awards while Scott Powell and his popular Purebred Arabian horse Paddys Day along with US owner-breeders Betty Gillis, Joseph A and Dianne Waldron stole the limelight in the 2016 US Darley Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood’s Highland Center on March 31, 2017. The HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley (International) Awards was received with great fanfare as the winners came from Hong Kong, Algeria, Sweden, France, The Netherlands, Poland, USA, UK and Turkey. Poland’s Doruta Kaluba’s efforts in promoting Purebred Arabian horse racing was rewarded with a Life Time Award. With some activities still to come after this week’s action on and off the tracks, the Festival is all set to sign off the year 2017 in style. 56 Arabian Horse Intl
