Sardinia has annual festivals and celebrations all
year long, featuring historic processions, medieval
activities, music, acrobatics and activities. Muravera
spring Citrus Festival shows appreciation for
fruit farmers and their contribution to the island’s
economy. The three-day festival includes art show,
musical performances and samples of Sardinia’s
oranges. The Village Festival in Sanluri takes place
every autumn and celebrates Sardinia’s culture,
handicrafts, music and cuisine. It features street
musicians, bands and village choirs. Local artisans
showcase their wares and attendees eat traditional
cuisine.
Some 15 miles south of the town of Nuoro,
the landscape of Orgosolo was made famous
by Nobel laureate Deledda’s novel Doves and
Hawks.
In the late 1960s, an Italian anarchist movement
gave birth to a street art movement in the town,
painting stories of the local farmers’ battles
against a brutal feudal system on the walls of
the historic centre. Today, the city is a gallery
of liberation murals, protest pieces and a visual
history of Sardinian struggles against foreign
occupation.
Sardinian food and wine is cheap and delicious.
Fregola, local rice-like pasta, pecorino sheep
cheese, fresh and seasoned, are served with Pan
Carasau, a Sardinian rosemary flatbread.
The selection of fresh fish and meats across the island
is still very good value for money compared
to, say, Catalunya or Provence.
