Creating a better everyday
life – one step at a time
The IKEA Concept has continued to show its
strengths in business year 2012. The IKEA
Concept is created to give the many people,
regardless of the thickness of their wallets,
the possibility to furnish their homes – even
when times are tough.
More and more people recognise and appreciate
the determination of IKEA franchisees to help
create a better everyday life. During the year,
more than 770 million visits were made to IKEA
stores around the world. And the ambition to
offer home furnishing solutions that are
relevant for different markets around the world
continues to draw people to the stores.
Creating a better everyday life for the many
people means much more than offering
beautiful home furnishing products at a low
price. After the earthquake, tsunami and the
following situation in Japan last year, IKEA
Japan made great efforts to make everyday life
a bit easier for people in the worst-hit areas.
Among other things, IKEA Japan donated
thousands of start-up kits to help furnish
government-built temporary houses. Each
kit helped a family start a new life.
Today, 154,000 dedicated IKEA co-workers
around the world work to fulfil the IKEA vision
– to create a better everyday life for the many
people. We all contribute to make life at home
a little bit easier, a bit more beautiful and a bit
more enjoyable. It is no surprise that all of us
believe that home is the most important place
in the world!
“We need to practice
what we preach and
set a good example!”
VICENTE CUBELLS, STORE MANAGER, IKEA VALLADOLID, SPAIN
“We encourage customers to buy energy-saving
light bulbs to reduce their energy consumption
at home,” says Vicente Cubells, Store Manager
at IKEA Valladolid, Spain. “But this is not
enough. We also need to practice what we
preach and set a good example. We need to
take the lead and utilise longer-lasting, more
energy-efficient technology in our stores as
well.”
Over the past year, specialists working for the
IKEA franchisor have cooperated with several
IKEA stores to test a new range of energyefficient
commercial lighting for all areas,
including the store façade and car park. The
new light bulbs and fixtures reduce energy
consumption by 34% each year.
34%
The amount of energy saved as
a result of switching to the new
energy-saving lighting system.
“Using LED spotlights and fixtures in our stores
and in the underground car park enables us
to utilise new technology to minimise our
environmental footprint,” says Vicente.
“Since these new lights and fixtures last for
such a long time I know we will save money,”
adds Gordon Gustavsson, Store Manager at
IKEA Malmö, Sweden. ”And it is great to know
that co-workers can focus on helping customers
instead of changing light bulbs.”
In addition to testing and making these energysaving
spotlights available for all IKEA stores,
specialists working for the IKEA franchisor have
documented and spread know-how about how
to work with these lights in different areas of
the store. And they are continuously working to
secure even more energy-efficient commercial
lighting solutions. This all adds up to brighter
stores and brighter future for the environment.
“IKEA fabrics are
known for strong design
and being original.”
EMMA JONES, PRODUCT DEVELOPER, IKEA OF SWEDEN AB
In 2011, IKEA textile product developer Emma
Jones joined students of Beckmans College
of Design in Stockholm for a workshop that
encouraged the art of surprise and creation. The
students made hundreds of sketches that Emma
turned into metre fabrics and other textiles (with
the students’ consent, of course). “IKEA fabrics
are known for strong design and being original,”
says Emma. “We wanted to build on that with a
slightly different twist.”
From the ocean of sketches, Emma worked to
design six new metre fabrics, which feature an
inventive blend of striking colors, memorable
faces, bold patterns and little symbols of
everyday life. Emma says she enjoyed flicking
through the sketches, finding images she was
drawn to and determining ways to put them all
together. “That was actually what was really fun
— to create something from a starting point that
you do not normally start from.”
The collaboration extends beyond metre fabrics
into bed textiles and shower curtains. But they
are just the start — the rest is up to you. Grab
some scissors, friends and continue the creative
process. Who knows what you might create!
20,000 hours
With built-in LED lights, SOLVINDEN
outdoor light will light up your garden,
balcony or patio for up to 20,000 hours.
This means that you do not need to
pay more for your outdoor lighting than
the cost of changing the battery every
other year, since sun and wind are free
energy sources.
In any other small town in Sweden, it would
be pretty strange to see a car driving up and
down the street with a large lamp sticking out
the passenger-side window. But Älmhult is not
just any small town – it is also the centre for
IKEA product development. The passenger
was an IKEA product developer who wanted
to test what wind resistance would be needed
to charge the batteries in the new SOLVINDEN
lamp.
“If the sun is not
shining, the wind is
probably blowing.”
DAVID WAHL, PRODUCT DEVELOPER, IKEA OF SWEDEN AB
“A few years ago, IKEA stores started selling
solar-powered outdoor lighting,” explains
product developer David Wahl. “When it was
time for us to update our outdoor lighting range
we gave ourselves a challenge – we wanted to
make a lamp that would also be powered by the
wind, not just the sun. We figured, if the sun is
not shining, the wind is probably blowing.
Working with our suppliers, we designed two
lamps that are powered by both the wind and
the sun. This way, you can light your yard or
patio rain or shine!”
“There is something
for everyone.”
46 products
For the new IKEA PS 2012 collection,
inspiration from more than 60 years of
IKEA design history was used to create
46 new products.
The past contains something the mind cannot
resist. For the new IKEA PS 2012 collection, the
designers were asked to find inspiration in more
than 60 years of IKEA design history. Instead
of simply looking back, they were challenged to
bring the designs forward by rethinking forms,
functions, materials and sustainability. And of
course – with affordability in mind, since design
belongs in real homes.
Bright, colourful and made from a variety of
materials, the IKEA PS 2012 collection, which
includes items such as tables, lamps, bowls and
textiles, is meant to be useful, relevant, fun and
surprising. From shoe storage that doubles as
seating to an insect-inspired indoor/outdoor steel
easy chair, this collection has a bit of everything.
“Families with kids, people who live in small
spaces, people with limited budgets – there is
something for everyone in this collection,” says
Mats Nilsson, Range Strategist at IKEA of Sweden
AB. “Whether it is one piece or many, these IKEA
PS products are meant to inspire people and
meet their needs and desires at home.”
owned by the House Market Group opened the
A total of 14,438 visitors attended opening
day festivities. 12,000 meatballs in the IKEA
Restaurant & Café and 2,500 hot dogs from
the IKEA Bistro were served.
IKEA Bangkok (Bangna), Thailand
A few months later, on 3 November 2011,
there were over 8,500 excited visitors
exploring the newly opened 42,900 m² IKEA
Bangkok store. Many of these visitors were
eagerly signing up for IKEA FAMILY
memberships or enjoying a plate of Swedish
meatballs at the IKEA Restaurant & Café with
their families. The reason for the excitement?
This was the first IKEA store in Thailand and
part of the largest shopping centre evelopment
in the country. The IKEA franchisee is owned by
the IKANO Group. By the end of the day, the
number of visitors reached 25,616.
Due to the flooding situation in Bangkok around
the time of the opening, a large part of the
sales from the first three days were donated to
flood relief efforts.
In addition to securing the support necessary
to successfully implement the IKEA Concept,
the IKEA franchisor worked closely with the
local teams to develop local competence to
operate the first IKEA stores in Thailand and
Bulgaria.
“Securing a strong foundation, both in
construction and know-how, ensures the
success of new IKEA stores in new markets,”
says Lacia Sherlock, Store Manager of IKEA
Bangkok.
Inter IKEA Systems B.V. is the owner
of the IKEA Concept. There are 12
different groups of companies that
own and operate IKEA stores under
franchise agreements with Inter IKEA
Systems B.V. Inter IKEA Systems B.V. is
a company legally independent from all
IKEA franchisees.
“Nobody can guarantee
a company or a concept
an eternal life, but no
one can accuse me for
not having tried to.”
INGVAR KAMPRAD, IKEA FOUNDER
More than 30 years ago, Ingvar Kamprad decided
that the stock market was not an option to
finance the strong IKEA growth at the time.
The need for total independence and an
ownership structure for a long-term approach
were decisive factors. The resources needed for
future IKEA development therefore had to be
based on savings and what had been created
through the IKEA business.
The IKEA franchise operation was established in
the early 1980s. It was built to be able to always
act and react in the best interest of the IKEA
Concept and the many people. The system was
designed so that it secured the control of the
IKEA Concept and at the same time stimulated
growth and a strong entrepreneurial spirit in the
business.
The IKEA franchise agreement gives the
franchisee the right to operate an IKEA store
in a specific location in accordance with the
franchisor’s systems and methods and to use the
IKEA trademarks. Being an IKEA franchisee also
means getting access to the IKEA product range
and the opportunity to take an active part in the
continuous development of the IKEA Concept.
Concept development
Inter IKEA Systems B.V. is the worldwide IKEA
franchisor. It owns the IKEA Concept including
the IKEA trademarks. All IKEA stores operate
under franchise agreements, with the exception
of the IKEA Delft store in the Netherlands
(which is owned and operated by Inter IKEA
Systems B.V.).
As the IKEA franchisor, Inter IKEA Systems
B.V. started to develop and document the IKEA
retail system in the 1980s. This is still part of
today’s tasks which also include expansion,
testing ideas and solutions, conducting training,
monitoring the implementation of the IKEA
Concept and providing legal protection for the
IKEA trademarks.
Foundation. The Kamprad family is on the
supervisory board of the Interogo Foundation.
The purpose of this enterprise foundation is to
secure longevity of the IKEA Concept in line
with the ideas of its creator, Ingvar Kamprad.
So, this is how it has developed and what it
looks like today; the unique Ingvar Kamprad
creation, built to secure an infinite future for
the IKEA Concept and the IKEA Brand. And
to create a better everyday life for the many
people.
Creating homes
to love
Simply put, IKEA home furnishing is beautiful,
functional and affordable. IKEA stores use the
IKEA product range to create solutions that are
relevant and affordable to consumers in their local
market. These solutions contribute to how people
live. And more importantly, to how they want to
live. It is all about creating beautiful homes to love.
Homes that make everyday life a little better.
