PARENTAL WEEKLY UPDATE – 1st March 2018

We seem to be fortunate at the moment in terms of the amount of snow that is not falling in and around Baldock.
Please click here to be reminded of our procedures and points of contact if I do need to shut the school for snow or
any other reasons.
Whilst the outdoor sports fixtures have been cancelled this week, there have still been plenty of activities running
both in the classroom and as part of our extra-curricular provision. Congratulations to all the year 9 students who
attended the Bronze DofE practice expedition last weekend – I understand that the weather was beautiful but very
cold at night! Please do keep an eye on the school calendar to see the wide range of opportunities that happen at
KTs every week.
Thank you to all parents who attended the Year 8 parents’ evening last night. I hope that the evening was productive
and there was plenty of positive feedback as well as a number of areas on which to improve. Attendance was
around 95%, so thank you very much!

We are very proud of the rich range of extra-curricular activities that are on offer at the
Knights Templar School. Click on the icon to the left and have a look in the booklet at the
exciting variety of clubs and activities available! This booklet focuses on the extracurricular
activities available to our Year 7-9 students, but there is also a timetable on the
website that shows the full range for all year groups.
Year 10 Work Experience
We have extended the Own Placement deadline; this is now Monday 16 th April 2018. This is to give students the
best chance of finding their own placements.

We would also be very interested to hear from you if you work for a company that would be interested in offering a

Science News
GCSE Science Revision Workbooks
Research and experience has proven, that students who achieve their potential in exams are those that spend
time 'testing themselves' on what they have been learning and revising, rather than simply re-reading notes.
In order to assist our GCSE students with their independent studying, we have for sale (at a discounted price) a
series of all-in-one Revision and Practice books. These are specific for our AQA Specification, and include free
downloadable flash cards and an ebook.
These study aids are available as three separate books at £5 each (rrp £10.99) for those sitting Separate Science
exams, and for those sitting Combined Science, there is a combined book available in either Higher or Foundation
Tier, at £10 each (rrp £16.99).
If you wish to purchase these, our preferred method of payment is via Wisepay and students will receive their
books in their science lessons.
These are now available for students in Year 10 to purchase, but students in Year 11 are still able to get them if
they haven’t already done so.

Year 11 Drama Exam Showcase
Our Year 11 Drama students’ have been working hard in preparation for their upcoming performance exams that
will take place at the end of March. Although we can’t invite an audience for their exam, the students would love
to invite you to see their work on Wednesday 14 th and Thursday 15 th March. The details for each evening are
below. This, their final performance project, is a great opportunity to celebrate the progress they have made.
Wednesday 14 th March 4.30-6.30 – Performing extracts from ‘Girls Like That’ by Evan Placey and ‘Be My Baby’ by
Amanda Whittington.
Thursday 15 th March 4.30-6.30 – Performing extracts from ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ by
Mark Haddon and ‘Jerusalem’ by Jez Butterworth.
PE News
Well done to the year 10 girls who played in the District Netball
tournament on Thursday at Marriotts School. Out of the six games we
played in our pool we ended up winning 3 , drawing 1 and losing 2.
These results put us third in our pool but unfortunately we did not
make the semi-finals.
Well done to Maisy Tomlinson, Millie Haywood, Alicia Padget-
Dunthorne, Zara Northern, Alice Burns, Rebecca Twena, Revae Tilbury

Organising Art Trips and Why
Annually, the Art Department offers each year group, from 7 to 13, a range of gallery and museum visits to
enhance learning and interest in Art and Photography as well as benefiting students’ coursework and exams.
We do our best to keep the cost of these visits as low as possible, comparing coach company quotations, buying
group rail tickets and reducing staff costs to a minimum; often staff will give up their free time to accompany
students.
By granting permission and contributing to costs, we are very grateful that parents also support KTS students’,
enabling them to experience our rich heritage and visual culture whilst encouraging such skills as awareness,
creativity and critical thinking.
Our Year 7 visits next week will be to the NATIONAL GALLERY, Trafalgar Square, London. We have arranged
talks by gallery experts who will introduce students to some of the highlights of the world famous collection of
paintings. It will help them to understand historical context, the meaning of the paintings, why they were
painted and by whom.

NB: We are sorry but we cannot take any student without parental permission.
Coming soon - We plan a summer visit to the Royal Academy and elsewhere (to be decided) for Year 12 and Year
9 students opting for GCSE Art and Photography – more news about this later.

Please take note of the following road closures when planning your journey to school.
Planned roadworks summary
Monday 5 March 2018 to Friday 9 March 2018
All closures will be from 9pm – 6am, with no work on Saturday / Sunday
M1 junctions 9 – 10 gantry power cable repair
Work commences here on 5 March for five shifts. The northbound carriageway will be closed from 5 – 9 March with
a clearly signed diversion from junction 9 to 11A. Traffic will be able to access junction 10 for Luton and Luton airport,
but all other traffic will be diverted back to junction 11A for the diversion to junction 9.
A421 east and westbound from Marston Moretaine to Renhold
Lane and slip road closures for resurfacing, sign renewal and white lining:
Work will continue here from 5 March for 5 midweek night shifts under lane closures, we will however have some
closures on the slip roads but there will always be a signed diversion in place:
5 March:
There will be closures of lane one of the A421 westbound including the westbound entry and exit slip roads at the
junction with the A603
6 – 7 March:
There will be closures of lane 1 of the A421 westbound between the Marsh Leys and the A6 junction, the westbound
exit and entry slip road at the Marsh Leys junction
8 March:
Lane 1 of the A421 eastbound and the eastbound entry slip road at the Marston Moretaine junction will be closed
9 March:
Lane 1 of the A421 westbound and the westbound entry slip road at the Marston Moretaine junction will be closed
A1(M) northbound junctions 7 – 8 central reserve cable repair
Work starts here on 5 March for one night shift with a full northbound carriageway closure. There wil be a clearly
signed diversion.
A1 northbound at Southoe: full carriageway closure for landscaping works.
Work will continue here from 5 March for 5 midweek night shifts, there will be a full closure of the A1 northbound
carriageway. A signed diversion route will be in place at all times and there will be gatemen on site to escort local
residents to their properties. We will also have a lane closure on the A1 southbound carriageway for safety purposes.
Norton Road and Baldock Lane between Baldock and Letchworth: essential bridge maintenance
Work starts on two bridges across the A1 (M) at Baldock Lane and Norton Road between Letchworth Garden City
and Baldock. This will involve the closure of both roads from 5 March – 17 April 2018
Baldock Lane
The road will be closed from the junction with Pryor Way in Letchworth Garden City to Weston Way in Baldock,
there will be a clearly signed diversion in place via Letchworth Gate - A505 - B197 London Road, Baldock - Weston
Way, Baldock.
Norton Road
The road will be closed from the junction with Norton Road in Letchworth Garden City to the junction with Norton
Road / Icknield Way in Baldock. There will be a clearly signed diversion in place via Norton Road (Letchworth) -
A507 (Stotfold) - Icknield Way (Baldock).
