InIstanbulImetanoldscholarnamed“AhmedEfendi.”With<br />

his elegant manners, open-heartedness, spiritual limpidity, <strong>and</strong><br />

benevolence, none <strong>of</strong> our religious men I had seen could have<br />

equalled him. This person endeavoured day <strong>and</strong> night to make<br />

himself like the Prophet Muhammad. According to him,<br />

Muhammedwasthemostperfect,thehighestman.Wheneverhe<br />

mentionedhisnamehiseyeswouldbecomewet.Imusthavebeen<br />

verylucky,forhedidnotevenaskwhoIwasorwhereIwasfrom.<br />

Hewouldaddressmeas“MuhammadEfendi.”Hewouldanswer<br />

myquestions<strong>and</strong>treatmewithtenderness<strong>and</strong>withcompassion.<br />

ForheconsideredmeaguestwhohadcometoIstanbultoworkin<br />

Turkey<strong>and</strong>toliveintheshadow<strong>of</strong>theKhalîfa,therepresentative<br />

<strong>of</strong>theProphetMuhammad.Indeed,thiswasthepretextIusedto<br />

stayinIstanbul<br />

One day I said to Ahmed Efendi: “My parents are dead. I<br />

don’t have any brothers or sisters, <strong>and</strong> I haven’t inherited any<br />

property.Icametothecenter<strong>of</strong><strong>Islam</strong>toworkforaliving<strong>and</strong>to<br />

learn Qur’ân al-kerîm <strong>and</strong> the Sunnat, that is, to earn both my<br />

worldly needs <strong>and</strong> my life in the Hereafter.” He was very<br />

delightedwiththesewords<strong>of</strong>mine,<strong>and</strong>said,“Youdeservetobe<br />

respected for these three reasons.” I am writing down exactly<br />

whathesaid:<br />

“1-YouareaMuslim.AllMuslimsarebrothers.<br />

2- You are a guest. Rasûlullah ‘sall-Allâhu alaihi wa sallam’<br />

declared:‘Offer kind hospitality to your guests!’<br />

3-Youwanttowork.Thereisahadîth-isherîfstatingthat‘a<br />

person who works is beloved to Allah.’ ”<br />

Thesewordspleasedmeverymuch.Isaidtomyself,“Would<br />

thatthereweresuchbrighttruthsinChristianity,too!It’sashame<br />

therearen’tany.”Whatsurprisedmewasthefactthat<strong>Islam</strong>,such<br />

anoblereligionasitwas,wasbeingdegeneratedintheh<strong>and</strong>s<strong>of</strong><br />

theseconceitedpeoplewhowerequiteunaware<strong>of</strong>whatwasgoing<br />

oninlife.<br />

I said to Ahmed Efendi that I wanted to learn Qur’ân alkerîm.<br />

He replied that he would teach me with pleasure, <strong>and</strong><br />

begantoteachme(Fâtiha sûra). Hewouldexplainthemeanings<br />

asweread.Ihadgreatdifficultypronouncingsomewords.Intwo<br />

years’ time I read through the whole Qur’ân al-kerîm. Before<br />

eachlessonhewouldmakeanablution<strong>and</strong>alsocomm<strong>and</strong>meto<br />
