New collection, new colours, new finishes and a whole
new you. Danish furniture brand, BoConcept, launches
its new outdoor modular lounge sofa, with matching
coffee tables: the Rome Outdoor Living collection to
complement it’s existing outdoor collection.
The outdoor living trend continues to blur the line
between indoor and outdoor furniture. BoConcept and
designer Henrik Pedersen have responded, producing
a design that mixes luxurious elegance, living-room
sensibility and the brand’s characteristic simplicity.
The design is built around three modules: a 1 seater;
a 1 seater corner/end with armrest; and a 1 seater
open end with incorporated table. All modules can be
combined or work as standalone pieces. This design
produces a flexible solution that can be scaled up,
scaled down or reconfigured to fit the consumer’s
changing needs.
On Rome’s powder coated aluminium framework,
sit high-comfort, taut and voluminous seat and back
cushions, covered with high-performance anti-weather
fabric. Back cushions are fixed to the framework with
clean-designed Velcro straps, while seat cushions
feature anti-slip underside fabric. The modules also
receive loose cushions, in both light grey and dark
grey colourways. All fabrics score 9 out of 10 for UV,
rain and colour-fade resistance. While a left or rightmountable
armrest, in Australian eucalyptus wood,
adds a tactile and organic detail.
The Rome collection also includes two coffee tables, in
matching powder coated framework. The dimensions
have been developed to allow a nesting configuration,
but each can work as a standalone piece.
HOUSE OF THE MONTH by Maggie Alderson
1.
Modern living
Maggie Alderson finds homes with kitchens you can eat and live in
How many hours of sleep – if not whole heads of hair and even
marriages -– have been lost over the stress of renovations? It all seems
so simple, obvious really, rude not to, in fact, as you sweep through
your potential new home imagining how lovely it would be if you ‘just knocked
through’ and then ‘just added a tiny extension’…
In your mind that somewhat dark dwelling, with rather poky rooms, is already
rendered an airy light-filled space, that most desirable of 21st Century housing
features. And with those trifling – you think, in your house-drunk state – tweaks
your new home will also have the number one domestic feature de nos jours: the
eat-in kitchen/family room.
What we all long for, it seems, is to make the dinner in the same room our
children are doing their homework in (or, more likely, gawping covertly at
Snapchat), or be deftly chopping up the final ingredients for the salad while our
dinner guests waft around us, with glasses of wine, chatting.
In our imaginations, of course we are doing this family dinner prep in the
harmonious hum of academic concentration, or chopping and chatting in a
floaty dress, the space as immaculate as our nails. Sizzle sizzle, scribble scribble,
chop chop, pop, fizz, clink clink, ha ha ha…
In real life, however, we won’t be able to hear The Archers for kids squabbling
and would be too exhausted to chat with friends, from the time spent deep
cleaning the kitchen after doing the bulk of the food prep before they arrived.
Despite that, the flowing space of the kitchen/family room is what we all
desire. So rather than kill ourselves to get it, spending twice the budget, over
twice the time promised by the builders, while microwaving dinner on the
landing and washing up in the bath… why not move into a heavenly apartment
where it has been designed by someone else to be that way?
1. Commonweal Lodge
Where? Commonweal Lodge is a
new development built on the site of
the former Commonweal school on the
Webb Estate on the outskirts of Purley.
The estate was conceived and developed
by local entrepreneur William Webb in
the late 1800s as a garden suburb ‘country
landscape for city dwellers’, located just
15 miles from central London. Just 1.5
miles from Purley, which has retained its
leafy village atmosphere, from where trains
take under 30 minutes to London at peak
times.
What? One of just four truly luxurious
apartments, Apartment 3 is a duplex on
the first floor (via lift or stairs) with floor
space of 2,710sq ft, with high ceilings
and everything finished to a very high
spec. Double doors lead from the hall
to the expansive kitchen, dining and
family area, with two sets of French
doors opening onto the private L-shaped
terrace, presenting elevated views over
the landscaped rear gardens. The master
bedroom suite has a dressing area plus
a luxurious bathroom. On the second
floor, there is a guest suite and bedroom
three with a separate bathroom. There is
an open-plan study area on the galleried
landing.
Where? The Knowle Hill Park
Country Estate is surrounded by
45 acres of secluded private woods
train station is approximately one and
a half miles with regular services to
Waterloo in around 40 minutes.
apartment is the show home in this
exclusive development. There is a
very large kitchen/dining/living area
with bay windows and doors onto
the terrace. The large master en suite
bedroom has a dressing area, while the
generous second bedroom is served
by a shower room. There is a separate
is four miles south of Bromley, in the
village of Keston. The Keston Ponds and
Common location is surrounded by treelined
roads, large detached properties and
gated estates. It’s 17 minutes to Victoria
from Bromley South station. Hayes and
Orpington stations are also near with
connections to other London stations.
What? This Victorian manor house is
being transformed into seven apartments,
and four new-build houses, all with
private terraces or gardens and views
across three acres of grounds. Apartment
3 incorporates the grandest room in the
original manor house with impressive
proportions and windows throughout,
plus a private terrace wrapping round
two sides. The kitchen/dining/living
area is nearly 1000 sq ft, with a large
bay window at one end. The master
suite has an en suite, with a separate loo
and dressing area. There are two further
bedrooms with a family bathroom and
another guest loo. As well as a club
room with a boot room and storage, the
development has a dog-wash facility and a
cold room for online grocery deliveries.
How much? Apartment 3 has an
asking price of £1.60m, and is being
Dorking, from where trains take around
an hour to Victoria or Waterloo.
duplex ground and lower ground floor
luxury in a mansion originally designed
by Thomas Cubitt, now converted
into six apartments, with new-build
houses (all sold) in the grounds. With
exceptionally high ceilings in what were
the original reception rooms and far
reaching views, it has a contemporary
kitchen and three large bedrooms, all en
suite, with a separate utility room and a
private lift to the lower floor. A terrace
wraps around the apartment.
Editor’s
Letter
Welcome to the March issue - my first as editor since
November 2016, as I take over again to cover
for Lucy Fleming while she is on maternity leave.
What a treat to be back here just as spring is starting to burst
forth, especially as the theme of this month’s supplement is one of
my very favourite subjects: fashion.
As a former editor of ELLE, I will never stop being fascinated
to see what new trends emerge each season and the gorgeous
mixed brights in our fashion story have me raring to get out to
the shops to snap up some beautiful coloured pieces.
Spring is also an inspiring time to think about our gardens and
Sue Whigham shares her enthusiasm for the annual promise of
seeds, while Jo Arnell has tips for bringing scent into your garden,
even at this early stage.
At this time of fresh starts we are also delighted to introduce
two esteemed new columnists. We feel very honoured that
Hilary Wilce, a former senior editor with the Times Educational
Supplement, and an education correspondent for The Independent,
has joined us as education columnist.
Writing for us each month about health and beauty, Eminé
Rushton has been a wellbeing and beauty editor for over 15 years
and is Wellbeing Director-at-Large at Psychologies magazine.
Enjoy your Surrey Homes. I very much look forward to
sharing the next twelve months with you.
This talented husband and wife team are
behind the company Pale & Interesting, a
brand producing everything from furniture
and home accessories to interior products, sets and
locations. They run an online shop with a branch in
Rye and holiday homes along the East Sussex coast.
The cabin was the first holiday property to be developed
and was potentially the most daunting. “We cut our teeth
on this one really,” says Atlanta, explaining that each one
is unique, but they are all stamped with the distinctive,
pared-back, but welcoming style of the brand.
The transformation of a modest two-bedroom
building into a dream holiday house that sleeps up to
ten, takes talent, hard work and something more: namely
Dave and Atlanta’s special brand of ‘white’ magic.
Together they have used their vision, design and production
skills - finely honed through careers working in magazines,
photography and furniture design - to maximise the
potential of the property, without extending the
physical building beyond its existing footprint.
“We have kept the template and tried to keep
the 1920s cabin integrity,” says Atlanta. “We
have a passion for old English cabins. We think
they’re not appreciated and should be protected.”
This one had lain empty for a while and at
the time of purchase it looked very different.
“It was all mock Tudor inside, very dark
and with red on the walls,” says Atlanta.
“It was divided into little rooms with low,
‘normal’ ceilings. We went up into the
attic - and knew we’d find all the original
roof supports and timbers. We replaced
the roof, but from the outside, so that
the internal structure was preserved.”
They also reclad the outer walls with
fresh weatherboarding and installed raised
decking all round the outside, helping
specially. The brass plumbing pipes have deliberately been left visible and the taps are garden stopcocks
the house sit more comfortably in its surroundings
and giving it a New-England-meets-Scandi vibe.
Big changes weren’t limited to the cabin either; their fourth
child, Honey-Rose, was also born during the project.
“Honey got very used to the sound of nail guns and
power sanders,” Atlanta remembers, describing how
they removed the original ceilings to make the double
height, pitched ceiling and ‘open’ up the cabin.
“We cleared out the large space in the middle of the house
and then worked out how to squeeze in all the bedrooms.
From the start we knew it would be a beach house and a shoot
location. We wanted one central living space – and to be able
to see right through from one end of the house to the other.”
As a result the cabin is wonderfully light, which is
a key feature when choosing a space for locations and
photo shoots and the vaulted ceiling creates an airy
feeling of space, without being cold or draughty.
“We like to use natural light as much
as possible,” Atlanta explains.
The windows were replaced with a mix of off-the-shelf and
bespoke, to maximise the amount of light within the cabin.
They have also installed Velux windows in the roof in places.
“We put one in the bathroom to bring in light
from above, because it has no wall windows.”
Left and below: Looking from the sitting area through to
the eat-in kitchen, shows the beautiful flow of the space. The
antlers are vintage and they found the 1970s lamp in Hastings.
The sofas are IKEA cleverly disguised under antique French linen
sheets (Pale & Interesting always have a stock of antique linen)
and the cushions are also from their shop
machine, tucked cleverly behind bi-fold doors. There are
other neat, space-saving tricks around the cabin, in fact
there’s not an inch of wasted space. They’ve been able to
install – and disguise – a huge fridge-freezer, turning a gap
between two bedrooms into a useful ‘fridge cupboard’.
For the ultimate space-saving idea, you only have
to look in the children’s bunk bedroom; designed
and built by Dave, it serves as both a quirky nod to
the sea, with its four cabin-style bunks – and as a
fantastically fun way to stack sleeping children.
The bedrooms all surround the large central
room and are deliberately modest in size.
“Bedrooms in a holiday home are just for sleeping
in,” says Atlanta pragmatically. “The relaxing is done
in the central space. People can congregate in different
areas of it and not feel on top of each other. “They can
use the snug,” which also doubles as a bedroom, “or

Top: Looking out onto the deck and into the garden, with light
pouring in from all sides. The gloriously patina-ed club chairs
and the cushions – made from grain sacks –are all from Pale &
Interesting. The flowing curtains – the essence of a summery
beach house feel – are antique linen sheets
retreat to their own rooms, or even go outside.”
The space is zoned into a sitting area and kitchen diner,
united by the uniform floor and the clever recycling of
the original ceiling, which has been used throughout
as accents to keep a sense of unity. The floorboards are
scaffolding planks, making them generously wide, sanded
and treated with a special Danish finish, involving lye – a
strong alkali used to bleach the planks and stop them
yellowing – and then several applications of white soap.
This gives a quiet, soft texture to the flooring, and it’s
easy to keep clean; all you do is wash it with more white
soap. Both items are for sale at Pale & Interesting.
The boards from the cabin’s ceiling have been reused
throughout the house to bring a rustic touch that contrasts
well with the smooth white of the walls and floor and
adheres to Dave and Atlanta’s belief in recycling and
reuse. This is a key part of their ethos and also integral
to a look that relies on a limited palette, especially whites
and pastels, because it is the contrasts in textures and
types of materials that provide colour and depth.
This is part of the philosophy lying behind the
relaxed, or uncontrived feel to the interior.
“It’s a bit like an outfit,” Atlanta explains, “you
don’t want to look as if you’ve tried too hard.”
It is quite an art – which they are masters of. Using
whites and pastels could easily make a scheme too
“I have lots of mirrors in
my houses,” says Atlanta. “But
not to look in! They do other
things; they can double the size
of a room and set up vistas, so
that there’s always something
different to look at”
Above: There is a Velux window over the kitchen table to
bring in even more light, to this central part of the house. The
extending wall lamp is a flea market find. Atlanta and Dave
found the stools in Hastings and the console cupboard is an old
factory piece Left: The clock is from IKEA
pretty and thematic, but that doesn’t happen here, as
the ‘pale and interesting’ style has a definite edge to it.
Dave and Atlanta often use factory furniture and rough,
unfinished materials alongside smooth and delicate.
“Metal has good textures,” says Dave. “It has rough
and smooth together and a worn down, lived-in look.”
The master bedroom is a case in point here. It is a
pretty room with French doors opening out onto the
garden, so you can lie in bed looking out at the view.
The delicate French shutters and twinkly chandelier are
carefully offset by some utilitarian bedside cabinets - the
interiors version of wearing a lacy dress with DMs.
The exciting news is that the Pale & Interesting shop
is moving to bigger premises in Rye’s Landgate Street
this spring; this will enable them to sell bigger pieces like
the cabinets and more furniture in general – and give us
all a chance to try and emulate their signature style.
It is clear that Atlanta and Dave genuinely care for
furniture and objects and the stories they have to tell.
Above: The dining area, just off the kitchen, is surrounded by windows. They bench is vintage Swedish, the metal chairs are vintage
French café ones and the table is a classic French farmhouse gem. Such unique items in Atlanta and Dave’s signature style are available
from their shop
“We like to repair broken things,” says furniture designer
Dave. “When you repair something, you become a part
of the story, the history that lives on in the piece.”
Together they design new pieces, such as the two
chairs in the front window which are part of the Coast
Collection at Pale & Interesting, and also made a little
table next to the chairs with a mirror for a top.
Many more mirrors can be found on the cabin
walls. Mirrors, it appears, are important in their
styling, but not for traditional reasons.
“Someone once said to me you must be extremely
vain,” laughs Atlanta, “because I have so many mirrors
at home, but I never look in them. Mirrors do other
things. They reflect light back, they can double the size
of a room and set up vistas and other view points, so
that there’s always something different to look at.”
Another misconception about Atlanta and Dave’s
style is that white is hard to live with.
“It’s something we get asked but white is easy. It wipes
down or washes. The linen throws go straight in the
washing machine.”
Atlanta has lots of such tips that can be applied to all
interiors and ought really to become mantras for
modern living.
“I never put a cushion on a sofa that can’t go in the
washing machine.”
It turns out that cushion covers can be made from the most
unlikely materials too. Those in the cabin are made from an
assortment of things, from mattress ticking and linen sheets,
through to Turkish carpets and hessian sacking. All the
65 surrey-homes.co.uk
Above: The kitchen is brilliantly simple, with cupboard doors
made from boards salvaged from an original ceiling in the house.
The white-painted shelves are scaffolding boards. The splashback
is galvanised steel and the lights are from Pale & Interesting.
The kitchen table provides another preparation area Right: The
earthenware vessels are a secret passion of Atlanta and Dave’s,
who collect them
time Atlanta and Dave are looking for textures, for light and
shade, for satisfyingly subtle changes in the weave and weft.
“These carpet cushion covers have a special quality,” she
says, “they just make whatever they’re next to beautiful.”
Even though this is a holiday rental, attention to detail
is a big part of Pale & Interesting’s ethos. Dave points out
the bespoke narrow-gauged tongue and groove panelling
commissioned for the bathroom and master bedroom. It sets
these rooms apart and gives them a less ‘off the shelf’ look.
Details are often quirky and original - and quickly copied;
whether that’s the use of old French shutters for bedheads,
such as those used in the master bedroom, taps with the
plumbing on the outside, exterior bulkhead lamps and
storm lantern used in the bathroom - it all becomes part of
the carefully considered Pale & Interesting aesthetic.
Above: The bunks in the children’s bedroom were designed and built by Dave and
Atlanta to make the most of the relatively small space
“We mix new things with vintage so that it doesn’t look
contrived, not like a museum, it feels lived in, like it’s got
history, it’s your own home,” says Atlanta decisively.
The look is fresh, but with an added friendliness.
“We never want anyone to feel they’re afraid to
sit down - it’s party proof - or these days, child
proof. It needs to withstand being lived in.”
The combination of new, antique, and re-imagined materials
and objects gives their brand a clear ethos and, despite the
light and airy look this conjures, a down to earth integrity.
“People ask, are you shabby chic?” says Atlanta,
“and we say, no, we’re Pale & Interesting.”
Dave and Atlanta’s expertise, skill and resourcefulness have
ensured that this cabin transformation is not just interesting,
but also ingenious, imaginative and truly inspiring.
Above: Sarah loves sheepskins and buys them everywhere from
Dunelm to boot fairs. She found the white leather La-Z-Boy
recliner in a charity shop in Bexhill. She made the heart-shaped
light feature out of strings of fairy lights. Left: The standard
lamp was from Woodcocks in Battle. Sarah glitter-enhanced and
framed the Blondie print, which has a matching Elvis opposite
A
notice hanging in the kitchen of this Victorian
terrace in Hastings says it all: ‘Some girls
are born with glitter in their veins’.
The owner of this house, Sarah, is one of those girls. Her
husband Stephen, not so much, but he’s learned to live with
it – and I suspect, secretly love it, because this house full
of rhinestones, glitter and fluffy sheepskins, with strings of
pearls dripping from antique chandeliers, is the physical
expression of his wife’s wonderful, vibrant personality.
“My daughter warned her boyfriend before she brought
him round for the first time,” says Sarah. “She told him:
‘My mum’s house is her in house form – slightly quirky,
to say the least…’ Luckily, it didn’t put him off.”
From the moment you step into the hallway, you know
you are in a high-glamour zone. The original plaster archway
is painted dramatic black and the chequered floor leads
your eye on past the large chandelier – Sarah’s philosophy
is that one can never be knowingly over-chandeliered – and
up the stairs, to a feature wall papered with black and gold
wallpaper designed by Barbara Hulanicki of Biba, with
vintage feathered fans and silk kimonos on the wall next to it.
The console table in the hallway contains more hints
83 surrey-homes.co.uk
Above: The dining set was a present from a friend. The squiggly
1960s ceiling light is one of a pair from the Antique Warehouse
in Hastings Old Town Right: The glass fruit bowl is from House
of Fraser
of what lies within. Next to the large vase of silk flowers are
bottles of designer perfume – some for a last-minute leaving
the house spritz, others which are past their best for scenting
the air and creating a general atmosphere of fabulousness.
And a small notice says (in shiny silver
writing, of course): ‘You look fabulous.’
Which would never be a word of a lie with Sarah. She’s
a fashion queen – indeed, I met her in the legendary
Hastings style emporium that is The Wardrobe.
Here – depending on your luck on the day - you will
find original Ossie Clark dresses, next to wardrobeanchoring
MaxMara tailoring, and a new-with-tags
Diane von Furstenberg gold sequinned jacket (my best
ever find there…) which someone has bought and then
decided they didn’t need after all. (I very much did.)
Sarah says her daughter
warned her boyfriend before
she brought him to the house:
“My mum’s house is her in
house form, slightly quirky,
to say the least...”
Above: Sarah’s love for shaggy fur, rich colour, white and visual wit come together in this corner of the dining room. The Willy
Wonka Golden Ticket cushion was from the Brewers paints showroom in Eastbourne. The bird cage is from Hastings Antiques
Warehouse and Sarah found the ballet shoes in the St Michael’s Hospice shop in Hastings
“I’m a clothes person,” says Sarah. “I love glamour
and I’m a bit of a magpie for sparkly things. I’ve
always liked clothes, dressed nicely, but after my kids
grew up and I had a bit more disposable income,
I discovered designer clothes and the monster was
unleashed – and there’s no putting it back in the box.”
This is clearly apparent in the glory of the house, Sarah’s
dressing room, her inner sanctum and a temple to style. She’s
taken over a whole bedroom, equipping it with specialist rails
from fashion retail fittings supplier Morplan, one of them just
to display her extensive collection of white blouses - and had
shelves built to house her very impressive handbag collection.
“My handbag passion started with my first serious
purchase which was a Vivienne Westwood handbag. Then I
discovered Chanel, Dior and there was no stopping me…”
But while the designer names are impressive, this is no
display of vulgar extravagance. It’s not about status symbols,
rather that Sarah is a connoisseur of style and quality,
“Clothes are a big
thing for me. I buy
everything from
Topshop to Jean-Paul
Gaultier – the cleverness
is in the mixing...”
Left: Sarah painted a dark wood
Edwardian cabinet to fit in her white
and cream scheme. The coral is from
Dunelm and Sarah found the Jean-
Paul Gaultier display in an antiques
shop in Norman Road, sadly no
longer there
who has amassed her collection with wit and panache.
A pair of amazing red glitter ankle boots are genuine
Yves Saint Laurent, but sitting next to them is an equally
fab-looking silver pair – which are from Primark.
On Sarah, worked into an amazing look – which she
has the height and presence to pull off - you wouldn’t be
able to tell which pieces are the designer real deals and
which the chain-store cheap and cheerfuls. Equally, from a
distance, you wouldn’t know that her collection of amazing
bright-coloured fur pieces is all of the fake, fun variety.
“I buy everything from Topshop to Jean-Paul Gaultier,”
she says. “The cleverness is in the mixing. You could go
into Gucci and dress yourself from head to toe, but that’s
not using any imagination. And a lot of the fun is in the
chase of sourcing amazing pieces. It would be boring just to
go into a shop in Bond Street and buy it all off the rail.”
Along with the talent to spot the one knock-out
thing among the swathes of crud in shops like Primark,
Sarah’s shopping secret is her address book of designer
second-hand stores, which she visits regularly and has
built up relationships with the owners, so they let her
know when something special, in her style, comes in.
Then there are pre-loved designer clothing
websites, which she can browse from the comfort
of home, although these take a little more care.
“I’m very good at researching things if I buy online, I’ve
never bought a fake, but you do have to be careful.”
Her other secret, to keep it fun and to hold on to that sense
of the chase, is constantly updating and refreshing her trove.
“I do turn things over,” she says. ‘I sell things
back through Mel at The Wardrobe, but there
are some things I would never part with.
One of these is the ankle length chiffon Jean-
Paul Gaultier dress with a print pattern which looks
like dollar bills, but they actually say ‘SEX’.
“I like quirky things,” says Sarah, “the
weird and the wonderful…”
There is a great example of the latter in the window
treatment of the master bedroom, next door to the
dressing room. Sarah found the apricot and gold

CustomCarpetsS32.indd 1 31/05/2017 16:30
Previous page: Sarah has created dramatic glamour in the ground floor study, with a statement chandelier from Roomings in George
Street, Hastings Old Town Above left: the furry leopard print chest of drawers is from Hastings Antique Warehouse. Above right:
Sarah gave the vintage buttons to her upholsterer to sew into the Chesterfield chaise longue
lamé fabric in the amazing vintage haberdashery
Wayward in Norman Road, St Leonards.
“It was from the same bolt used to make a coat for
Meryl Streep in the movie ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’,”
says Sarah. “I have an amazing curtain maker and I
asked her to do the tops ruched into puffballs. She
asked me how big I wanted them and I said, ‘Well, they
can’t be too big…’. Each one took loads of fabric.”
Then, by happy chance, she came across the perfect
bed cover to go with them – on sale in Debenhams,
showing how her approach to clothes shopping,
mixing vintage and designer with chain store, works
just as well for homewares as it does for fashion.
As is shown by the successful combination of
the mirror over the mantlepiece from TK Maxx
and an antique kimono sourced on line.
The same approach is in glorious evidence down in the
living room, a scheme in white, cream, sheepskin – and lots
of glitter - Liberace himself would have appreciated. And with
a detail another of Sarah’s icons, Mr Elvis Presley, would have
appreciated: a cream leather La-Z-Boy reclining armchair.
“My husband hates the sofa,” says Sarah, “but he’s
American and I knew he would secretly love a La-Z-
Boy, so I decided to get him one. I went to Bexhill
and found this one in a charity shop for £35.”
She then Sarah-ised it by popping on a luscious
sheepskin, one of many in the room.
“I’ve got a flock of sheep,” she says, laughing.
“They’re so comfy to sit on and so warm. I’ve
bought them from Dunelm, boot fairs…’
Picking up the fluffy white theme is a magnificent pair
of squiggly wiggly 1960s ceiling light fittings, one in the
sitting room and the other in the adjacent dining room
in the knocked-through space, which Sarah found in the
Antiques Warehouse in Hastings Old Town High Street.
“We went in looking for wardrobes and I spotted
them hanging up. When my husband wasn’t looking
I went over and had my name put on them… It
was a done deal without involving Stephen.”
And it turned out she was right to jump

95 surrey-homes.co.uk
Above: The wallpaper on the half landing was designed by Barbara Hulanicki
of Biba fame. Sarah draped the chandelier with strings of pearls Above right:
The landing houses her collection of glamorous make up, set off by feathers
and black flowers Below right: The wallpaper in the spare room, by Kandola,
is hand-studded with Swarovski crystals
at them: “They were the key to decorating this whole
room, everything else was done around them.”
Two more standout pieces are the prints of Elvis and Blondie, in ornate
white frames, which hang on either side of the exposed brick chimney
breast – and are lavishly enhanced with glitter. Sarah made them herself.
“I saw a fabulous glitter Elvis in an exhibition at the Dragon Bar in
George Street in Hastings,” she explains. “I wanted it so much, but it
was £2,500, so I thought I would go for it myself. I bought the print
at Posters Online for £6, got some glue and a pot of glitter and that
was it. I already had the frames. I buy old ornate frames whenever I
see them, so I always have some ready to go. I painted these white.”
In the adjoining dining room there is another feature print of an icon: a
giant photograph of Marlene Dietrich on the wall behind the dining table.
“I bought a card of that portrait for my daughter and I loved it so
much, I commissioned it online as an oversize print. I was going to
have it cover the whole wall, but then I decided to rein it in a bit.”
Which is somewhat out of character – and not something that came
into play when Sarah and Stephen recently made over their kitchen.
From a distance it appears to be a simple all-white treatment. Once
you get up close, you see that the worktops are in a sparkly finish,
Chaos in Silence
by exciting new UK artist, Chris Rivers
www.chrisriversart.com
@chrisriversart
Above and below: Sarah’s bedroom is a veritable boudoir. She
had the curtains made in fabric from Wayward in St Leonards.
She found the bed cover in Debenhams and the wallpaper is by
Italian firm Dochi. The gold and crystal mirror was from TK
Maxx, Tunbridge Wells. The 1950s dressing table was from an
antiques shop in Eastbourne
there is glitter in the paint on the walls – and the handles
on all the units are packed with Swarovski crystals.
Even the kettle and toaster are in the theme, being from
the shiny, white, pineapple-faceted De Longhi collection.
Completing the look are oversized shiny, ceramic floor
tiles, which Sarah was prepared to pay over the odds for.
“For some reason, as soon as you want bright white, rather
than cream, the price shoots up,” she says. “But we found
these online and the tiler advised me to use black grout
to really set off the white and the shine, and I love it.’
And just in case, being in such a practical part of the
house, you should forget for a moment that you are
in a realm of supreme domestic va va voom, hanging
on the wall is an Elvis clock – white jump suit Vegas
period, of course – with legs that swing in time with the
ticking. A treasure picked up on a visit to Graceland.
Which, if Sarah and Stephen ever felt like giving
their own house a name, would be a good inspiration.
A sign by the front door saying ‘Glamourland’
would be just the thing to do it justice.
with sandals! Take a look at the street style stars who wear
the look and see if it might work for you. After all, it’s
County Clothes Menswear
Quality clothing and a personal service
CountyClothesS41.indd 1 22/02/2018 15:53
ESTABLISHED IN 1976,
County Clothes is a menswear
specialist for the discerning
customer. Dedicated to providing
quality products with expert
knowledge and the highest standard
of personal service. An ever growing
business, their most recent shop
in Sevenoaks is due to celebrate
its first birthday next month.
County Clothes aims to provide a
well considered choice, ensuring
that only the finest quality
products are on offer, from the
well known established brands
such as Barbour and Cheaney, who
have years of heritage to the new
independent businesses such as
Swole Panda who are relatively at
the beginning of their journey.
Based in Canterbury, Tenterden,
Reigate and Sevenoaks, the store
managers, guided by our experienced
director John, take a very personal
role in seasonal buying. Tailoring their
decisions to meet the requirements
of their long standing and loyal
customers but also aiming to engage
the new gentlemen who have yet
to discover what County Clothes
has to offer. These may well be the
loyal customers of the future.
As our customers needs develop
and evolve, County Clothes moves
along with them. Our new shirt
department in our Reigate store
aims to fill a niche in the market for
good quality formal shirts and to
provide the expert knowledge for
cut, style, and of course accessories.
Beauty
Face off winter
Treat your skin – and yourself – to regular, renewing masks says Josephine Fairley
As friends, family (and my old teachers) will tell you:
I’m not good at doing what I’m told. But there’s
one command I find it pretty irresistible to obey:
to relax for 10, 15, 20 minutes or so, while a face mask
works its magic. I suppose it is possible to work/cook/do
the housework while you’re wearing one, but in a world
in which we scurry from commitment to appointment,
there is a huge amount to be said for the TLC a face mask
delivers to our busy souls – quite aside from
the huge boost it delivers to our complexions.
If you’re in a real hurry, sure, there are quick
fixes. If my complexion has the blahs, I’ve two
go-to fast-acting options: Liz Earle Brightening
Treatment Mask, £17.50 for 50ml starter kit
(it’s powered by skin-reviving camphor, which
gives it a wonderful aromatic scent), and Lixir
Vitamin C Paste, £32 for 50ml (victoriahealth.
com), which you apply to damp skin for an amazingly
reviving burst of brightening vitamin C in just two minutes.
Aside from fast fixes, masks tend to fall into two categories.
Clay-based options, some of which ‘set’ on the skin, are
designed to draw impurities out, even working to clear pores
and blackheads, sometimes with the addition of ingredients
“There is a huge
amount to be said
for the TLC a
face mask delivers
to our busy souls ”
like salicylic acid and charcoal. Then there is the skinquenching,
ultra-moisturising type of mask, often powered
by glycerine, hyaluronic acid, or butters like shea and cocoa.
In general, the clay style of mask is best suited for oily/
combination skins, but the vast majority of 35+ women (and
men, if they can be persuaded) will appreciate the skinplumping,
nourishing benefits of something much richer.
Me? I can’t stand masks which set on the skin; they give
me a sort of beauty claustrophobia. But I
have friends who want every last toxin outta
there, thank you – who I will point in the
direction of the very reasonable Earth Kiss
range of four 100% natural exfoliating/porerefining/rejuvenating/deep
cleansing mudbased
masks, featuring plant micronutrients
alongside Himalayan Shilajit clay, which is
used in Ayurvedic medicine, £1.99 each.
At the other end of the price spectrum is the
brilliantly decongesting Omorovicza Deep Cleansing
Mask, £62 for 50ml, which is deep charcoal in colour
and features Hungarian thermal mud, rich in calcium
and magnesium. (Curvy supermodel Kate Upton,
who I basically worship, is apparently a fan.)

109 surrey-homes.co.uk
Beauty
Priced somewhere in between is Clinique City Block
Purifying Charcoal Clay Mask & Scrub, £29 for 100ml.
Or, delivering a deliciously warming sensation on the
skin, there is Sanctuary Spa 5 Minute Thermal Detox
Mask, £10 for 100ml – very soothing and relaxing (and
doesn’t set too hard, in the five minutes it needs to get
to work). Other excellent masks in this category include
Amie Spring Clean Cleansing Mask, £5.95 for 100ml, or
Argan+ Lift & Renew Clay Mask, £8.99 for 125ml.
As for my preferred moisturising masks, I have an absolute
arsenal, bathside. I tend to rotate them, using one two or
three nights a week, often in the bath where the steam seems
to help them penetrate even better. (Entirely unscientific,
that observation, but I recommend giving it a go.)
Among my longstanding favourites is the ultra-rich
L’Occitane Immortelle Cream Mask, £58 for 125ml –
as creamy as a mask gets, packed with vitamin A and
E. (Very good for evening out skintone, I find.)
A new discovery is the wonderfully radiance-boosting
Nuxe Nuxuriance Ultra Roll-on Mask, £37 for 50ml. I’ve
long been a fan of metal applicators – for
eye creams, or for ‘rolling’ skin to diminish
puffiness – and this is dispensed by a cooling
metal rollerball, to help with fluid dispersal.
The roller dispenser has an ‘off’ position,
and I like to glide it back and forth along the
cheekbones and jaw for extra de-puffing.
The REN Ultra Comforting Rescue
Mask, £30 for 50ml, is another favourite –
and does exactly what it says on the tin (um, tube).
Then there’s the multi-masking phenomenon. Now, you’ve
heard of multi-tasking (you probably do it all day, every day...),
but multi-masking is a bit of a new buzz-term in beauty circles
and the basic principle is this: few of us have consistently
‘normal’ skin all over our faces so the idea is to take two or
more masks and apply them as required to cleansed (and
ideally lightly exfoliated) skin together, on the relevant areas.
“You’ve heard of
multi-tasking –
multi-masking is
a new buzzword
in beauty circles”
This mirrors what a professional beauty therapist would
do, during a facial – perhaps one clay-based mask from the
paragraph above (or alternatively, something incorporating
charcoal or salicylic acid, which fight breakouts), where a
moisturising mask would be too rich, on areas of the face, such
as the chin and nose, where you’re prone to shine or spots.
Then for the forehead, cheeks – and most definitely the
neck – which tend to be much drier, you want to opt for
a skin-quenching mask. In addition to my suggestions
above, I love the moisture power of Liz
Earle Intensive Nourishing Treatment
Mask, £17.50 for 50ml, and Decléor Hydra
Floral Expert Mask, £33 for 50ml.
And there’s another hot new mask
trend – for sheet masks. If you follow any
Instagram beauty bloggers and vloggers,
you’ll have had a good laugh at how
ridiculous some of them look, slathered
in these sheet masks with their cut-outs for eyes, nose
and mouth. But hey, who cares (except maybe a terrified
postman/small child), if the results are impressive?
Basically, these are all single-dose, single-use products.
If you’ve an eco-conscience, you might want to opt for a
more conventional type of wash-off face mask, as these
are a real throwaway beauty treat – but if you do want to
check out the sheet mask craze, I recommend three that
did incredibly well with the testers for the Beauty Bible
Awards (check out all the results on beautybible.com).
Temple Spa The Contourist Mask, £50 for six sachets, is
slightly hilarious because you actually hook the impregnated
stretchy gauze mask over your ears and chin. Serum-infused
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Powerfoil Mask, £16.50
for one mask had one tester’s husband comment that it made
her look ‘10 years younger’, £60 for four. A real steal, Amie
Daybright Glow Brightening Sheet Mask, £6.99 for three,
put on an impressive, skin-reviving performance
considering the super-affordable price.
At this end of winter, when skin’s been
parched by central heating for up to six
months – and really put through it, if you
succumbed to that horrible flu that was going
around - masks are the pick-me-up skin needs.
And if they encourage you to put your feet up,
sit back and do absolutely nothing while they’re
working their magic, what’s not to love about that?
digestion and repopulate the
gut biome. This repopulation is
important at this time of year,
particularly if you’ve suffered
from winter bugs and been
prescribed antibiotics, which
wipe out everything.
Miso paste, made from
fermented beans and grains, is
a staple in Japan and China.
In addition to containing
millions of beneficial bacteria,
unpasteurized miso is packed
full of essential minerals and
moment, and what it’s
‘telling’ me.
Whatever I’m using I take
time to massage and stroke
the skin, and breathe in
the aromas of the natural
products. Sometimes, this
moment is the only thing
drawing a line between the
busy working day, and the
more restful evening, so I like
to honour it. Oh, and I love
my little jade face roller – it’s
so cool and deeply soothing
– rolling it around my skin
in the morning to help with
absorption of my products
always feels wonderfully
invigorating.
Do you have a particular
product you couldn’t live
without? I get sent so many
products to test, so when I
am faithful to something, it’s
rather telling. I love the May
Lindstrom Pendulum Potion
(a cleanser) and the serums
by Botane Actives, Romilly
Wilde, and TWELVE beauty.
I am also very loyal to my
is a good source of various
B vitamins, vitamins E, K
and folic acid. Sourcing
unpasteurised miso – as
opposed to the packets
of instant powdered miso
widely available is important,
as extreme heat kills the
probiotics.
Miso soup for 4: make
800ml of low sodium vegetable
bouillon and bring to the boil
in a pan, add a bunch of finely
chopped spring onions and
simmer for 3 minutes. Place
2 tablespoons of miso paste in
a small bowl, mix with water
hydrating masks and think
Josh Rosebrook’s is the best.
I love a good face oil – my
favourites are from Votary,
Herbivore Botanicals, A.S
Apothecary or MV Organic
Skincare. But if I were
allowed only one product
forever it would have to be
coconut oil – I can cleanse,
moisturise and protect my
skin with it (and have done
on many a remote island
escape. Bliss!).
Month 3
weekly challenge
1 x power walk for 40 mins
2 home workout for 20 mins each
Health
Get fit for spring
in three months
It’s the third and final month of our get-fit-for-spring programme. Keep going!
1
This month, personal trainer and nutritionist Sarah-Jane Holt, is focusing
on making the two workouts we’ve been using in January and February
that bit harder and increasing the weekly power walk to 40 minutes.
Visit the Wellbeing section of our website to see Sarah-Jane demonstrating
this month’s changes to the original two workouts surrey-homes.co.uk
2
3
March: Home Workout
Now you are getting fitter, it’s
time to ramp it up a little from
the base we have set in the first
two months. refer to January’s
magazine, or visit the website, to
look at Work out 1 and add the
following changes to it to increase
the challenge. The framework
is to exercise for 30 seconds,
followed by a 30 second rest, and
repeat each exercise four times.
Press ups with a twist Add a twist
to work the core and shoulders. After
completing a press up, raise one hand
up towards the ceiling, rotating the
body, with hips sideways to the floor.
Bring the hand down, placing it
directly under the shoulder, to start
the next press up. Raise alternate left
and right arms on each press up.
refer to February’s magazine - or
visit the website – for Work out
2 and add the following changes
to add an extra challenge:
v up with a twist In the V
position, twist one hand across
your body to touch it to the floor
and then repeat on the other side.
Mountain climbers A new
exercise to replace the squat
jumps. Start with your hands on
the floor, arms straight, body in a
plank position, bring one knee up
towards your chest - this is your
starting position. With speed,
return that foot to the floor and
bring the other knee up towards
the chest, repeat for 30 seconds.
4
5
Leg lowers This is a progression from
the single leg lowers. The principle
is the same, but this time move both
legs together, keeping a bend in both
knees, and aim to tap your heels to
the floor. Make sure you protect
your back by keeping it in contact
with the mat throughout.
High knees with squat
jump Combine the squat
jumps from session 2 with
the high knees from session
1. Complete two squat jumps
followed by four high knees.
Nutrition Tip
This month, replace processed carbohydrates
with whole, natural carbs. For example,
substitute sweet potatoes for bread at lunch
and brown rice for pasta at supper. The benefit
of making these changes is that whole, natural
carbohydrates are far more nutrient dense, release
their energy more slowly and have a higher fibre
content. All these elements help to provide the
body with better quality nutrients, maintain
a healthy body composition and aid with
digestive function. You’ll find recipes and more
information on our website.

Food
The only Red Tractor certified bakery in the country -
because they use 100% British wheat – the Baker’s Bicycle
range includes such delights as ciabatta-style panini rolls
perfect for toasties, glazed brioche buns and something unique
they invented: the scioche, which is a combination of a scone and
a brioche. All the bread is made from scratch at their bakery, with
doughs proving for 24 to 48 hours – so none of the quick-acting
yeasts used in industrial bread production. You will find the range
in selected food emporia, delis and specialist farm shops (see their
website for details) not in bread racks, but in the freezer cabinet.
Managing director Simon Cannell explains their philosophy: “We
freeze straight from the oven, to seal in all the flavour, freshness and
goodness. All the serious gourmet has to do, is thaw and adore…”
Mini Moroccan Pulled Lamb Brioche Sliders
Makes 4 portions
• 8 Baker’s Bicycle Mini Brioche Sliders,
split in half
• 4 garlic cloves, chopped
• 2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 2 tsp cumin seeds
• 1 tbsp dried oregano
• 1 unwaxed lemon, quartered, pips
removed
• 1.5kg lamb shoulder (bone in)
• 2 red onions, cut into wedges
• 500ml pomegranate juice
• 2 tbsp clear honey
• 4 tbsp natural yogurt
• 50g pomegranate seeds
• 2 tbsp chopped mint leaves
• 50g rocket salad leaves
Method
To marinate the lamb:
1. Put the garlic, cinnamon, cumin, oregano and lemon in a blender with 1 tsp salt and
2 tsp black pepper and blend well. Alternatively, chop all ingredients and crush to a
paste in a mortar and pestle.
2. Place the lamb in a large food safe bag, tip the marinade in over the top & massage
into the lamb. Refrigerate and leave to marinate overnight.
To Cook
1. Pre-heat oven to 140C.
2. Place the lamb and marinade into a casserole dish with the onions and the
pomegranate juice and cover with a lid or foil.
3. Place into the pre-heated oven and cook for approx 4 hours until the meat is soft and
falling from the bone.
4. Remove from the oven and carefully pour off all the juices into a thick bottomed
pan. Leaving the lamb uncovered return to the oven at 200C for 20 mins to brown.
5. Meanwhile, add the honey to the cooking liquor and boil gently, stirring regularly
until the mixture is thickened and syrupy. Place to one side.
6. After 20 mins remove the lamb from the oven, cover and allow to sit for 10-15
minutes. Using two forks shred the lamb into a bowl.
7. Add the syrup mixture to the shredded lamb and mix well.
To Serve
Place the bottoms of the buns onto a large platter. Top each with a small pile of rocket
salad leaves, pile on a generous amount of the warm shredded lamb, top with a dollop of
the yoghurt, mixed with shredded mint leaves. Sprinkle on the pomegranate seeds. Put
the brioche lids on and serve, two to a plate.
How to make professional style
gin cocktails – without having
to stock your bar like the Savoy
mixologist
Some would say making cocktails is an art
form – there’s a reason they call the best
cocktail barmen ‘mixologists’. Silent Pool
gin distillers have created some amazing recipes
for such professionals, who have a whole array
of exotic potions to hand to whizz together
with their gin into fabulous brews.
Sometimes, perhaps, with a bit of theatrics in
the style of Tom Cruise in the film Cocktail…
But most of us don’t keep cardamom spirit, or
green chartreuse at home, so Silent Pool have
helped us adapt their recipes to make their
cocktails at home with ingredients we are more
likely to have in our kitchen.
With your trusty shaker, your best glasses
and some fun garnishes, you can enjoy a
sophisticated cocktail hour in the comfort of
home. Strictly no juggling skills required.
Each recipe makes one cocktail, so increase as
required for the number you are making for.
Blackberry Shrub
• 50ml Silent Pool Gin, from freezer
• 25ml Silent Pool raspberry or blackberry
gin cordial (or non-alcoholic cordial)
• 25 ml sweet vermouth
• 10ml ginger wine
• Soda water to top up
• Fresh raspberries
• Glass tumblers and cocktail sticks to serve
• Shake alcohol ingredients together. Pour
over cubed ice in a tumbler. Top up with
soda. Garnish glass with fresh raspberries
threaded onto a cocktail stick.
Aviation
• 40 ml Silent Pool gin
• ½ tsp juice from a jar of
maraschino cherries
• 20 ml freshly squeezed lemon
juice
• 1 drop of violet essence food
flavouring
• Shake ingredients with ice.
Strain into dainty, stemmed
glasses, with a maraschino
cherry in the bottom of each
one.
Silent Pool G & T
• 50ml Silent Pool gin (from freezer)
• 125ml chilled Fever-Tree elderflower tonic
• 5ml fresh lime juice, strained
• 2 dashes of absinthe, or Pernod, or other anise
• 6 thin slices of cucumber
1. The day before cut six thin slices of cucumber
and place them in a small dish or cup and cover
with the Silent Pool gin.
2. When you come to make the cocktail, first strain
the gin off and reserve. Discard the cucumber.
3. Dash an elegant, stemmed glass with the absinthe
or anise. (‘Dash’ is a mixologist technical term
meaning rinse the ingredient round and discard
it. It’s your choice where, your mouth is an
option…)
4. Place two or three ice cubes in the glass
and pour the cucumber-infused gin and
lime juice over the top.
5. Add the tonic and garnish with a lemon
balm leaf (or a mint leaf).
Garden
Scents of
spring
Even before your garden is in full bloom it can
be heavenly scented says Jo Arnell
It seems positively greedy to expect flowers to be fragrant
at this time of the year – a glimpse of colour is treat
enough when we’ve been waiting all winter. The glad
news is that there are quite a few scented plants around in
early spring, pumping out their perfume to attract early
pollinating insects. Many of the dainty woodlanders and
demure, shade loving shrubs need to have fragrance; in fact
they might get overlooked if it weren’t for their scent. In
summer, scents abound and we can surround ourselves with
fragrant plants – roses and lilies are a heady mix, with deep,
sensual undertones. Spring flowers exude lighter, fresher notes
– more Doris Day than Gina Lollobrigida, but that’s just what
we need to wake us up to the delights of the coming season.
Where to grow spring scented plants
It’s easy to get lost in the visual when planning a planting
scheme, we’re often drawn to colour or filling gaps in borders,
at the expense of scent. If possible, situate fragrant plants
in a warm, sheltered spot where aromas will intensify and
not be blown away by strong spring winds. Use containers,
or prune shrubs with care to keep scents at nose height.
A well-placed scented plant is an uplifting thing in its own
right, but because our sense of smell is located in the limbic
system in the brain, where emotions and long-term memories
are lodged, the scent may also create, or trigger, evocative and
powerful memories. Fill spaces near paths, seating areas, or
doorways with scented plants and they will be transformed.
Just imagine, the mundane trip to and from the front door
could become a delightful amble through a sensory paradise…
What to grow
In general, the closer you are to the species, the more
fragrant a flower is likely to be; for instance a Primrose
(the ‘prima’ rose) is scented, but its hybridised (I was going
to say cultivated, but I can’t think of them as that) cousin
Polyanthus is sterile and unscented. Flowers bred for their
looks will often lose characteristics like scent. Plants with
flouncy double flowers are hybrids and are usually sterile;
they have no need for pollinators, so will not attract wildlife
either. More frilly frou-frou on a flower generally means less
fragrance. Luckily the plant breeders have realised and pay
attention to other attributes than just looks now, so many
cultivated versions of species plants retain their scent.
Woody plants
Blossom on trees and shrubs is one of the great delights
of the season, but remember the above rule if you want
fragrance from a tree or shrub, and go for single flowers,
rather than flouncy doubles. The powerful scent will
more than make up for shy, diminutive blooms.
Here are some of the best:
Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ All Daphnes are
highly scented, but can be a bit fussy, demanding
conditions that are just right (perhaps they should be
renamed ‘Goldilocks’?). This variety is evergreen with
golden-edged leaves, its fragrant flowers emerging
early in the season and carrying over a distance.
Osmanthus x burkwoodii is another evergreen with
small box-like leaves and tiny white flowers that have an
intense fragrance. This can be grown as a hedge, but if
so, prune after flowering in late spring/early summer.
Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ has tiny pink
flowers with an intense fragrance which emerge on
dark woody stems in late winter and early spring. Snip
off a twig and bring into the house to put among your
cut flowers, or even on its own in elegant starkness.
Buddleia alternifolia is technically verging on summer
flowering, but this is the earliest of the Buddleias. Small lilac
flower clusters smother the drooping branches, which is a
gorgeous enough sight, but get closer and you’re in a bath of
pure honey. And of course, being a Buddleia, it’s a magnet for
butterflies and bees. The only downside is that when not in
flower, like a starlet after a party, it’s a wild untameable mess.
Only plant by a path if you can do what they’ve done to the
one at Sissinghurst and turn it into a sort of weeping tree.
Climbers There are plenty of scented summer climbers
– rose, jasmine, honeysuckle, sweet peas – but not so many
for the spring. Clematis armandii ‘Apple Blossom’ is a good
(but rampant), evergreen with large leaves and pale pink
flowers; more fragrant still is the aptly named Clematis
montana ‘Fragrant Spring’. Montanas are the earliest, most
vigorous of the Clematis family and will quickly smother
a wall or shed – ideal if you want total coverage, slightly
overwhelming if not. Wisteria sinensis is another that
Bespoke design & build treehouses, playhouses
and elevated platforms.
Commercial & International commissions welcomed
will run amok if you let it, but with careful pruning (look
at the beautiful, well-trained specimens on big old houses
or National Trust properties), it can be kept in check.
Perennials and bulbs
Spring flowers thrive at the base of trees, making the most
of the light before the canopy above closes over and many
of these emit perfume to lure insects into the woods.
In our gardens, these plants are brilliant for planting in
containers, where we can raise them up out of lowly ground
hugging situations and appreciate their beauty and scent.
When choosing daffodils, look for the smaller,
less showy narcissi (i.e. not the giant varieties with
hulking great trumpets) and you will find that
many are scented and look good in containers.
The Hyacinth family contains our native (and
scented) bluebell, together with the diminutive,
delicately scented Muscari, or Grape Hyacinth,
which will spread rapidly if allowed to naturalise.
Tulipa ‘Ballerina’ is a graceful, lily flowered tulip; warm
orange in colour, with exceptional scent, it is fairly longlived
and the foliage doesn’t become as tatty as that of some
Tulips. Tatty foliage is an annoying after effect with bulbs; it
needs to be left on, ideally for six weeks after the flowers have
finished, so that the bulb can regain its strength and bulk up
again. If planted in a pot, simply shove behind the shed until
the leaves have turned yellow, in the borders, try planting
among early biennials, so that the bulb foliage gets hidden by
a frothy skirt of forget-me-nots or spicily scented wallflowers.
Spreading carpets of scented Lily of the Valley are wonderful
in shady areas. Once established, they will romp away
and provide ground cover (to the point of being invasive).
Another scented carpeting bulb is wild garlic, commonly
called Ramsons, which look very pretty en masse in a
woodland situation, but will quickly dominate in the garden,
swamping all the other, more delicate plants. A soft spread of
scented native primroses works better on a domestic scale.
The fresh spring air is a lovely thing to experience.
Add some scented plants to the mix and the effect
will be truly glorious. It is possible for us all to create
a fragrant haven in the garden right now. It won’t
get that way on its own, though. So whip-crackaway,
as Doris Day would say; let’s get out there.
Garden
Pots of love
Jo Arnell shows how easy – and enjoyable - it is to
make a Mother’s Day treat for mum yourself
The garden centres are packed full of springtime
loveliness, much of it already made up into
generic containers in readiness for Mother’s Day.
But with a little time and thought it’s easy and satisfying
to make an original floral gift. Classic spring flowers are
always cheerful and uplifting, but there are also permanent
plants or plant combinations that will work equally
well and will be a lasting reminder of your devotion.
Types of container: Whether you choose a conventional
terracotta pot, bespoke planter, or something more quirky,
drainage is essential, so make sure there are holes in the
bottom of the container. If it’s not possible to make holes,
add a generous layer of gravel to the bottom so that plant
roots don’t drown in a pool of water. If you are planting into
a basket, line the inside with polythene prior to planting, or
even plant in a pot and then place that inside the basket.
The plants to choose
Bulbs are great in containers, providing welcome bursts of
colour at the start of the season. Plant out in the garden,
or tuck out of sight once they’ve finished flowering.
Narcissi Many of the smaller varieties are scented
which adds an extra layer of loveliness. They are also a
better scale for containers than the giant show-offs.
Tulips Look out for varieties that have good foliage,
as some have lots of leaf that can start to look tatty
and yellow before the flowers have gone over.
Hyacinths are highly scented bulbs and
come in every colour except orange.
Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) have delicate blue flowers
that look like tiny upside-down bunches of grapes. These
will quickly multiply if planted on in the garden.
Biennials make ideal companions for bulbs as they flower
early. Basically a biennial is just an annual plant that
spreads the growing period over the winter, so it is ready
to start flowering as soon as the light and warmth come
back in the spring. Once a biennial has finished
flowering it will die and can then be
replaced with summer bedding.
Forget-me-nots will flower happily in
pots and make a good ‘skirt’ at the base
of flowering bulbs, helping to
disguise that tatty foliage.
Wallflowers (Erysimum) are
available in a good range of
colours and spicily scented, they
mix especially well with tulips
for a glamorous container display.
Bedding The first
outdoor bedding plants
available at the garden
centres are happy and
tough, so they should
survive any cold snaps.
Don’t be tempted to
choose tender bedding
plants for your containers just yet.
Primroses and polyanthus Choose either a demure
natural-looking species primrose, or go for a jaunty
and bright polyanthus. They are low growing, so
work well either singly in small pots, or as fillers.
Pansies and violas will go on flowering for
months if you keep deadheading.
indoor succulent arrangements
These trendy plants make great table top displays for
inside the house, but as the name suggests, succulents
have evolved to store water in their leaves, so are
ideally adapted to grow in arid conditions (perfect
if you are giving them to a plant neglector).
This means that they will need to be potted into
free draining gritty compost. You can make up
your own mix, using equal parts sand, compost and
horticultural grit, and then top with a gritty mulch
once planted in the container. Cacti and succulents
(contrary to popular opinion in my family) do need
to be watered, especially in the growing season, just
make sure that the water can drain away adequately.
Herbs
Planters of mixed herbs are fun to put together and can be
tailored to suit a cook’s requirements. Small single pots are in
good supply at the moment, as the foliage will be young
and fresh. Pot them up singly into attractive containers
and group together, or arrange in a planter. Use a
taller plant like rosemary or lavender in
the centre and arrange the others around
it. Herbs might not be as colourful as
flowers, but they will make up for that
with their aromatic charms and flavour.
I’m kicking myself for not making the effort to go to
Seedy Sunday in Hove last weekend. It was the thought
of a long journey on a wet and dreary February day
but I know that it would have been worth the effort.
Apart from the seed swap tables where you either swap seeds
as the name suggests, or buy interesting home harvested seeds,
many of them English heritage varieties, and most with a
local provenance, there were over fifty stalls selling everything
seedy. Oh, and as an added bonus, the garden experts from
Gardeners’ Question Time were there to share their expertise
and, by the sound of it, do their own bit of seed shopping.
I liked James Wong’s idea of buying up vegetable seed packets
which are out of date and growing the seeds on as micro
greens – cropping them when they are still tiny. However, I
suspect that most retailers whisk these packets off the shelves
pretty promptly and replace them with the new season’s seeds.
But what happens to all those perfectly viable seeds
that are presumably returned? I don’t know about you
but we seem to find seed packets in odd corners of the
shed and provided they have been kept dry, there is
every chance that they will burst into life when sown
even if they are apparently past their ‘sell buy’ date.
Visiting a seed swap is such an easy and economical way
of buying fresh and perhaps unusual varieties and whilst
you’re doing that, you are making a bit of a stand against the
few large seed companies who tend to monopolise garden
centres. Having said that there are still wonderful exceptions
with smaller seed companies producing fascinating plants
and vegetables. And now there is still plenty
of time to pore over catalogues and order.
By the time you’ve done that, the rain might
have eased off a bit as there really is no point
in sowing in wet, cold, claggy ground.
I very much liked the sound of home-made
clay ‘seed bombs’ sold at Seedy Sunday, much
loved by ‘guerilla gardeners’ and anyone else
of like mind who wants to green up wasteland
and roadsides as well as barren patches in their own gardens.
It is always such a treat to see little patches of colour appear
alongside busy roads and on dreary roundabouts where
some like minded person has made a bit of an effort.
We pass a little garden underneath a rather bedraggled
street tree in Brixton quite regularly. The gardener there
often pops out for a little chat to discuss his marigolds
and Mexican daisies that flourish despite the attention
of marauding cats and feral foxes. And of course the
‘bombs’ would be perfect for a school garden.
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust recommend one which
contains wildflower seeds for scattering in either spring or the
autumn. They are protected with ‘added chilli’ which, it seems,
protects the seeds from predators like slugs and ants. The only
thing to remember with wildflowers is that they do best on
poor soil and would have a bit of a struggle if sown into grass.
The seed bombs remind me of the story of Ellen Willmott,
an Edwardian plantswoman who gardened at Warley
Eryngium giganteum or
‘Miss Willmott’s Ghost’
“If you want to
encourage bees
to your garden
buy seeds and
sow liberally ”
Place in Essex and had gardens in both France and Italy.
She had inherited a fortune and spent it lavishly on her
passion, employing over a hundred gardeners at one time.
She would, it seem, keep seeds in her pockets when visiting
friends’ gardens and would surreptitiously sprinkle them
in their borders as she passed. The plant that she is famous
for distributing is a beautiful one: Eryngium giganteum or
‘Miss Willmott’s Ghost’. I would happily have invited her
to share a few seeds with me. E. giganteum’s name could
really apply to the plant’s colouring as this big, bold, spiky
eryngium – it can grow to over a metre – has
late flowers which are surrounded by a ghostly
silver ruff. If you want to encourage bees and
other beneficial pollinating insects to your
garden, buy some seeds and sow liberally. It’ll
self-seed and you can then do Miss Willmott’s
job for her and pass some on to friends.
Chiltern Seeds’ forty-second catalogue
has just come out: compulsive reading
for the plantaholic. What I like is not only the variety
available but the fact that it is a family business born
of a keen gardener’s hobby. You’ll find ‘Miss Willmott’s
Ghost’ in there along with scrumptious trees, vegetables,
annuals, perennials and everything else in between.
I like the thought of perennials such as Perovskia
atriplicifolia ‘Taiga’, a new variety of the original species
native to Afghanistan, flowering away in its first season. It
is lovely for cutting and provides a wonderful, nectar rich,
late flowering cloud of blue. We’re going to experiment with
a new tobacco plant this year. Nicotiana hybrida ‘Starlight
Dancer’ is a new colour form of N. langsdorffii with its
small, limey, tubular flowers. The anthers of N. ‘Starlight
Dancer’ are a lovely chocolate brown. The thing about
tobacco plants is that they have such a long season and this
one can be woven through other border plants to knit your
planting scheme together. The Jamaican forget-me-not or
Browallia americana is a self-seeding annual grown from
seed which you might want to try this season. Sow in late
spring in a seed tray in a greenhouse/conservatory or porch.
Browallia americana has tiny, long flowering, amethyst blue
flowers which float in a rather gentle way through other plants.
Great Dixter used it to great effect in their borders last year
and I saw a really striking image taken by Jonathan Buckley of
the browallia growing with Phlox ‘Nora Leigh’ with its white
splashed leaves and a pinky mauve flower. I see that seeds are
available from the nursery at Great Dixter and by mail order.
Education
Investing in the brains
of tomorrow
From theatres to science labs and social hubs, three schools tell us about
their exciting new facilities, guaranteed to inspire young learners
The King’s School, Canterbury
What are the new facilities at the school? A collection of
basement rooms beneath Shirley Hall, the school’s main hall and
performing space, has been transformed into an open, modern
and attractive area comprising ‘Chums’ (the new Pupils’ Social
Centre), updated classrooms and a new specialist University and
Careers room which is now rightly positioned at the centre of the
school.
Preparation for the construction of the new Science Centre in
the Mint Yard area of the school has seen two old chemistry labs
relocated from beneath the soon to be demolished Mitchinson’s
Day House. The new labs are bright, spacious and designed to
allow synthesised theoretical and practical work.
Specially designed desks allow pupils to flow from one task to
another and provide ample space for more active teaching and
learning.
Mitchinson’s Day House has relocated to a site just
outside the main entrance of the school, where Count
Zborowski housed the original ‘Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang’ racing cars.
Designed by award-winning London architects Walters & Cohen,
the building provides contemporary areas for both study and leisure
activities, in easy reach of the main school buildings that lie within
the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral.
What was the inspiration to invest in this particular aspect of
school life? To provide a 21st century education within the context
of a World Heritage Site.
What are you most pleased with about the way the project has
turned out? The relocation of Mitchinson’s Day House enables
a transformation of classroom teaching and learning allowing an
integration of the sciences.
Did you use any specialist advisors or companies to design or
build the facilities? Award-winning London architects Walters
& Cohen are designing the new Science Centre and the new
Mitchinson’s house. They had previously overseen the conversion of
a former primary school into a new girls’ boarding house at school in
2016. Creative arts specialists Tim Ronalds Architects are contracted
to convert a Victorian malt house into a performing arts centre.

Education
How have pupils – and parents - responded to the new
facilities? Current pupils have embraced the new facilities with
whole-hearted enthusiasm and spirit. Parents are pleased that the
school is modernising itself even within the constraints of a World
Heritage Site.
Do you have any plans for other new projects? A £50 million
building programme continues across numerous areas throughout
the school, the most ambitious level of investment being
undertaken by a UK independent school.
A Victorian malt house building is being transformed into a
stunning performing arts centre comprising a 350-seat theatre
complete with orchestra pit, dance and drama studios, bar and
dining facilities. This state-of-the art school facility will also be
available for community use.
Alongside the malt house theatre a brand new International
College is being constructed, which will join the family of King’s
Schools. Welcoming pupils aged 11-16 from all over the world the
International College will be a truly global community. A single
purpose-built unit, it will be a striking mixture of concrete and
glass intended to preserve the gentle industrial feel of the site.
The Mint Yard, an historic area within the Cathedral precincts,
will host a new science centre. Due to open in 2020 the building
has been designed to be in keeping with its beautiful architectural
surroundings. Alongside seven new physics laboratories, the
development will deliver a dedicated science research space, an
auditorium, and refurbished biology and chemistry laboratories.
It is anticipated that the new and improved facilities will enable
the school to extend their
partnership activities with
local state schools, adding to
the already successful Saturday
Smarties science masterclasses
and Community Science Day.
Improved dining facilities
are also on the menu. A second
dining space below the current
dining hall will make the most
of views across Green Court to
the Cathedral.
The King’s School, 25 The Precincts, Canterbury, Kent
CT1 2ES 01277 595501 kings-school.co.uk
What are the new
facilities at the school?
Our whole school is new this
year! Our children benefit from
outstanding facilities that very
few prep schools are able to offer,
including science labs, a floodlit
all-weather games pitch, full-
size sports hall, indoor swimming pool, professional dance
studio and specialist art, music, drama, food technology and
computing teaching spaces, and everything has had a facelift.
We’ve also created a suite of brand new pre-prep classrooms
and outdoor learning space, purpose built to give our youngest
children the very best start to their education.
What was the inspiration to invest in this particular
aspect of school life? As an Early Years specialist, our
Headteacher, Vicky Ellis places great importance on giving our
youngest children an appetite for learning, by ensuring that
everything they do in the classroom excites them and creates
opportunities to try new things. As a brand new school, we
expect to grow organically through the children joining our
Early Years classes.
What are you most pleased with about the way the project
has turned out? The flexibility of the space allows us to
constantly re-engineer the layout of the classrooms and keep
things exciting for the children.
For example, for our Reception topic ‘Around the World’
this term, we’ve built the Banstead Buccaneer, a pirate ship
that is ‘sailing’ the children around the world to different
destinations to learn about the geography and culture in
those countries.
How have pupils and parents responded to the new
facilities? Our first pre-prep classes are pioneering the way in
their new classrooms – and they love them! All year groups
from nursery up benefit from access to the specialist facilities
and parents have been amazed by how much we have achieved
in a short time.
Do you have any plans for other new projects? Yes, we are
continuing to improve other areas of the school and we are
especially excited about a giant climbing frame that appeared
in our playground during the half term holiday.
We are in the midst of creating a plan of works for future
years to continue to develop innovative learning spaces to
meet the demands of our growing school. We have room to
expand and to develop specialist facilities for the future. We’ll
be able to make sure that in this current climate of educational
change, Banstead Prep can continue to provide a curriculum
that goes far beyond what most prep schools can offer.
Education
Hazelwood School
What are the new facilities at the school? The Baily Building
is the first capital project for the school in over ten years. It is a
magnificent teaching facility which sits alongside the Old School
Building, reflecting the glory of that in the expanse of glass which
forms the main façade of the new wing.
Inside, there are fourteen teaching rooms, an Art Room, a
Music Room and a 450 seat auditorium. For the first time in
thirty years, the school’s Years 3, 4 and 5 cohorts are together
in one environment, purpose-built for inspired and engaged
teaching and learning.
What was the inspiration to invest in this particular aspect of
school life? The teaching and learning is at the heart of any great
school. Whilst an outstanding teacher can inspire and influence
in any environment, there comes a time when they, and the
children, deserve the very best. After thirty years of changing lives
in a ‘temporary Portakabin classroom’, the time had come to call
in the demolition squad and to bring these classrooms up to the
standard of the rest of the school’s exemplary facilities.
What are you most pleased with about the way the project has
turned out? The space is big and light, and has a life and a spirit
which exudes creativity and encourages independent thought. It
is colourful, vital and full of life. It was completed in just one year.
And it came in on budget!
The auditorium gives us a place where the whole school can
assemble. It looks stunning in any light and at any time of day
and the curves add a sense of elegance and grace to its scale and
magnitude – but there is not one thing we are most pleased with.
Everything about the building takes our breath away.
Did you use any specialist advisors or companies to design
or build the facilities? The school worked with an architect
specialising in educational facilities. Our brief was interpreted well
and challenged effectively. The resultant design perfectly translates
our vision and delivers way beyond our expectations. It is a
modern building sitting alongside a piece of tradition and history.
The reflections caught in the glass capture, and make heroic, this
potentially uncomfortable juxtaposition.
How have pupils – and parents - responded to the new
facilities? The whole school community loves the Baily Building.
The children and teachers enjoy its style, space and light and our
parents are proud to have it within the school estate. All are in
agreement that it is no ordinary teaching space.
Do you have any plans for other new projects? The Baily
Building is Phase One of a Masterplan for the development of
the school site. Future phases are planned once we have lived and
loved the Baily Building for a little longer. It’s still too new and
wonderful to think of passing it over in favour of another project!
Nurture the child
– not the targets
Our new education columnist Hilary Wilce believes passionately
that a successful education starts with a child’s sense of self
This winter we got a new Minister for Education
and for once the person in charge of the country’s
schools had something interesting to say.
In his first big speech Damian Hinds announced that he
wanted schools to focus as much on developing children’s
character and resilience as on boosting exam results. And that’s
really good news - up to a point.
It’s vital that we help pupils learn how to stick at difficult
things, bounce back from set-backs, and be kind and thoughtful
to themselves and others. This inner strength is the greatest gift
we adults can give to children as they grow up.
But it’s wrong to think – as Damian Hinds seems to – that
teaching these so-called ‘soft skills’ is somehow separate from
teaching reading, writing, maths and science.
In fact, they are indivisible; you can’t make progress in maths if
you are terrified to make a mistake, understand literature without
empathy, or get your head round the hard parts of any school
subject without being willing to stick at it.
So schools should not just be told to offer character education
lessons, but encouraged to develop their pupils’ character at every
turn. And parents must play their part too – a much bigger
part than any school will ever play. Research shows that children
mainly take their values from home, so parents will always need
to be proactive and committed if they want to build strong, wellbalanced
children.
What’s testing you about education?
With an education system which seems to get ever more
complex the whole schools experience can be bewildering
for parents. With our annual education magazine,
supplements and regular features we address a wide range
of issues in the field, but we would love to know what
your particular areas of concern are. We won’t be able to
answer individual questions, but please email to tell us
what you would like to read more about at education@
Jane Howard’s
Fables from
the Farm
The daffs are up and it can only mean one thing... lambs!
March already! Love it – the daffodils are out, the
birds are busy sorting out their territories (and
their love-lives) and here at Coopers it’s time to
start lambing.
Back in October we put the rams in with the ‘tegs’ (18
month old female sheep that are being mated for the
first time) a few weeks earlier than the main flock, in the
knowledge it will all start 147 days later, in the middle of
March. And every year we look forward to the prospect of so
much new life, completely forgetting the sleepless nights, the
tricky births and the inevitable sad losses.
Before it all begins there will be a visit to the agricultural
equivalent of Mothercare to stock up on birthing supplies.
Latex gloves (hygiene), colostrum powder (for the weaklings),
castration rings (pretty self explanatory), and bottles and
powdered milk for the unlucky third triplet (ewes only have
two teats so one unfortunate soul always gets left out).
Next step is to get the caravan ready. We used to take it in
turns to get out of bed in the farmhouse – a big deal when
you’re cosy and tucked up at 3am and it’s blowing a freezing
gale outside – to go down to the sheep shed to
check on progress. But then a couple of years
ago we had the idea to put an old caravan in
there with the girls, so all you have to do is tip
out for a quick look round without having to
endure the cold March winds outside.
In January we scanned all the ewes. Malcolm
the Scan Man runs a camera under their
stomachs - a process not unlike a human
pregnancy ultrasound scan – although of course the sheep are
not lying on their backs and Malcolm, unlike the midwife,
has a lot of wool to deal with.
We scan them so we see whether they are carrying singles,
twins or triplets and as they come through the scan machine
we are ready with the spray paint to put a splodge on their
equivalent of
Mothercare”
shoulder for a single, on the top of their tail for twins and a
stripe across the back for triplets.
Not only is this useful information at three in the morning
when you have to investigate a tricky birth which could
involve four legs or eight (or heaven forbid
twelve) but it also means we can feed
accordingly.
The last four weeks of pregnancy represent
the period of maximum growth for the lambs
and those ewes with multiple babes on board
need more food than those with singles. But
one of the biggest problems can arise with
the tegs that are carrying single lambs is that
if they eat too much in these last few weeks they can end up
producing a huge lamb that is devilish hard to get out.
Two or three days before the first lambs are expected, we
bring the ewes into the lambing shed where they will be quite
disgruntled, as they actively prefer to be outside, whatever the
weather.
They give birth in the large open-plan part of the shed
but once delivered we will move the new family units to
individual pens to ‘mother up’, the opportunity for the
mother and lambs to get to know each other’s bleats, baas and
smells so once back in the great outdoors they can find each
other if they get parted.
Before this happens they will all be given matching
numbers sprayed on the side of the ewes and the lambs, so if
two should get accidentally parted, you can wander around
the field carrying the lost no. 30 lamb seeking the matching
30 ewe and effect a happy reunion. Bring it on.
