A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR TRACEY ROBERTS
MAYOR
Welcome to
the first edition
of What’s
Happening
for 2018.
As we bid farewell to
summer and embrace the
changing colours of autumn
in our City, there is once
again plenty happening
across our suburbs.
Autumn provides a great
opportunity to acknowledge
and celebrate the rich
diversity of our community.
Harmony Week
(15 to 21 March),
encourages Western
Australians to experience,
explore and appreciate our
state’s wealth of cultural,
religious, linguistic and
ethnic diversity.
At the end of May we mark
Reconciliation Week across
the country. This is a time
for all Australians to learn
about our shared histories,
cultures and achievements.
In this edition you can read
about the great things the
City’s Reconciliation Action
Plan (RAP) Working Group
has delivered recently and
future plans.
On Anzac Day (Wednesday
25 April), we recognise the
courage, mateship, skill and
perseverance of those who
have served and continue to
serve in our armed forces.
Dawn services are held
across the City and I
encourage all residents
to pay their respects by
attending an Anzac Day
service.
Details of services around
the City of Wanneroo
are documented on the
following page.
We also have two more
fantastic community
events this month with
Retro Rewind at Yanchep
National Park on 10 March
and Global Beats & Eats at
Paloma Park, Marangaroo
on 17 March.
The Easter long weekend
traditionally sees many
people travelling with family
and friends to enjoy the
wonderful sights, attractions
and beauty of our state.
Please remember to be safe
and vigilant on our roads
and take regular breaks to
avoid driver fatigue.
Look out for the Driver
Reviver volunteers who
will be out in force across
WA over Easter, providing
motorists with a free cup
of coffee or tea, and most
importantly, a chance to
stop, stretch your legs
(research shows that
exercise is an effective way
to combat fatigue) and
revive to help you reach
your destination safely.
Please check the City’s
website and I look
forward to seeing you
at the activities and
events happening in our
community.
ROADS KEY TO DRIVING JOBS GROWTH IN NEERABUP
Continued development of the
Neerabup Industrial Area (NIA)
and supporting infrastructure is
an important part of the City of
Wanneroo’s plan to create 100,000
local jobs over the next 10 years to
support the region’s growth.
According to Dr Ian Martinus,
the City’s Manager Economic
Development and Advocacy, the
City has an ambitious target of
20 jobs per hectare for the 1,000
hectare industrial area.
Neerabup Industrial Area.
“Establishing strong transport
links that easily connect workers,
customers and suppliers to the
NIA is fundamental to reaching the
20,000 jobs target and supporting
the growth and success of the
businesses within the area,”
Dr Martinus said.
“A number of projects have recently
been completed or are underway
to improve access to the NIA and
strengthen its links to important
freight routes, commercial centres
GROWTH
and regions including the Mitchell
Freeway extension through
Neerabup Road; the widening of
Wanneroo Road and Marmion
Avenue; and the planned railway
extension to Yanchep.”
The upgrade of Flynn Drive is also
crucial to the area’s accessibility.
Dr Martinus said the City has
advocated strongly during the past
couple of years through a dedicated
federal government infrastructure
funding scheme to highlight the
importance of the Flynn Drive
connection into Neerabup.
“This will continue through 2018 as
the City works to secure funding
to deliver the project and develop
an integrated economic plan that
will set the vision for, and drive
economic opportunities within,
the NIA,” he said.
The dualling of Flynn Drive will not
only serve as a catalyst for better
access to businesses, but will also
enable the City to better formulate
an inward investment strategy with
its major partners in Neerabup.
economic development strategy at
CONNECTING COMMUNITIES AND RESTORING RELATIONSHIPS
RAP
The City of Wanneroo has a newly
elected Reconciliation Action Plan
(RAP) Working Group to support the
reconciliation process and close
the gap in disadvantage between
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples and other Australians.
The new working group, consisting
of eight members, the Mayor and
two councillors, will work towards the
development of the City’s third
RAP which will outline actions for
2018-2022.
Newly elected chairman Dennis
Simmons said he was looking forward
to working with the group on a wide
range of reconciliation actions during
the next four years.
“I feel very privileged to chair this
group because it has the potential
to facilitate positive outcomes for our
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
residents,” Dennis said.
“All actions in the current RAP are
based around the three pillars
of relationships, respect and
opportunities.
“The new RAP will build on existing
actions and also identify other
opportunities by which the City
can establish relationships and
mutual respect with our Indigenous
community.”
Examples of reconciliation successes
during the past two years:
• A Welcome to Country Policy was
developed and adopted by Council
• Welcome to Country guidelines
have been produced for use on all
publications, emails, websites and
signs in the City of Wanneroo
WASTE
PLASTIC, NOT SO FANTASTIC
From 1 July 2018, single use plastic
bags will be banned across WA.
Many different terms are used when
people talk about plastics and it can
be very confusing trying to figure out
which option is best.
Here’s your guide to plastics:
Degradable plastics break into small
pieces. All plastics are degradable.
These small pieces can last in the
environment for hundreds of years.
They do not break down.
Biodegradable plastics can be
broken down by living things. This can
take many years and needs the right
circumstances.
Compostable plastics are a type
of bioplastic. They will break down
in an industrial compost facility, like
the Resource Recovery Facility in
Neerabup.
This is where the things you put in
your domestic waste bin goes.
Look out for the Australian
Standard number (AS 4736)
and the compostable logo.
The best thing to do is avoid single
use plastic altogether.
Many people are already using the
more environmentally friendly
‘bags for life’.
Start practising your plastic free
shopping today!
New look for parks
Members of the Two Rocks Beach Access Group
(pictured with Mayor Tracey Roberts and Member
Beach access restored at
Two Rocks
Work was completed in February to
restore staircase beach access from
Sovereign Drive, providing a formal
beach access point north of the
Two Rocks marina.
The previous staircase had to be
removed in October 2016 due to
beach erosion and structural damage
causing public safety risks.
The new structure is set back from the
original location with steel piles driven
into the underlying bedrock.
The staircase and viewing platform
has an aluminium substructure and
fibre reinforced plastic decking.
Several north coast ward parks will
be transformed over the coming
months as part of the Park Assets
Renewal Program.
Netball players at Kingsway will benefit from the additional floodlighting.
UPDATE
SOUTH WARD
Floodlights for Kingsway
netball courts
More than 580 teams will benefit
from floodlighting that has been
installed over all of the eastern
netball courts at the Kingsway
Regional Sporting Complex.
The $500,000 project, covering
construction, lighting and towers will
vastly improve usability especially for
training on the 30 eastern courts.
On any competition day about 2,500
netballers converge on the Kingsway
complex. The Wanneroo Districts
Netball Association is one of the
biggest in Western Australia with 90
clubs and more than 4,500 players.
Meanwhile work continues on Stage
2 of the Kingsway dog exercise
facilities following completion of
fencing for the dedicated area.
• Installation of perimeter fencing
and a gate for additional small dog
area annexed to the main area
• Installation of dog agility equipment
• Installation of water fountains and
sand-play areas.
Mirrabooka Avenue dual
carriageway
More than $2 million will be spent in
the coming months for the upgrade
of Mirrabooka Avenue to dual
carriageway from Hepburn Avenue
to Gnangara Road.
Due for completion in October this
year, the almost three kilometres
of dualling works will significantly
reduce congestion and improve road
safety in Darch and Landsdale.
The Mirrabooka Avenue dualling project is due for completion in October.
Nearby, the implementation of the
Kingsway traffic management
scheme continues between
Wanneroo Road and Ashdale
Boulevard.
The $820,000 upgrade addresses
issues of pedestrian and cycle
safety, traffic speed, volumes and
congestion.
Both projects are funded through
the City’s 2017/18 Capital Works
program.
FOOD TRUCKS A HIT FOR FAMILIES AND FOODIES
Good food is once again trucking in
to parks near you - bringing a range
of delicious cuisines from around the
world right to your neighbourhood.
Thanks to the success of last year’s
food truck trial the City of Wanneroo
food trucks are back every week until
June 2018.
As we roll out of the hot summer
months and into this wonderful
autumn weather - now is the perfect
time to get outdoors and enjoy
relaxed, alfresco dining.
Several parks across the City have
been selected to host the food trucks
on various weeknights and weekend
evenings.
Jo Hennessey from Yanchep had a
fantastic time visiting the food trucks
at Fisherman’s Hollow with her family.
“Absolutely great idea,” Jo said.
“Lovely atmosphere and the food was
amazing - we can’t wait to go again!”
Deputy Mayor Natalie Sangalli said she
was thrilled to see the food trucks back
in the City of Wanneroo.
“We have already seen so many people
out in the community, enjoying a wide
array of food while socialising with their
neighbours,” Cr Sangalli said.
“It is wonderful that the community are
enjoying their local parks and activating
these spaces.”
Get your food fix here:
YANCHEP
COMMUNITY WELCOMES NEW FACILITIES
There has been plenty to celebrate
in Yanchep lately, with the eagerly
anticipated completion of three new
community facilities.
Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club
The Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club
(YSLSC) moved into their new
building, overlooking Yanchep Lagoon,
during the first weekend in December.
YSLSC President John Heesters said
he was extremely happy with their
new building and surroundings.
“It’s very exciting to finally be in our
new ‘home,’ in a spot which we
believe is the best location to help
ensure the safety of our community,”
John said.
“The club had certainly outgrown the
old building, but now we have a
new facility which is modern and
purpose-built specifically for our club
and our operations.
“For example, we now have a
dedicated medical treatment room,
which is the biggest and best of any
I’ve ever seen.
“Best of all, we’ll be able to grow our
membership, recruit more senior patrol
members, and offer our community a
better service.”
Council approved a $7.9 million
budget for the project, with the final
cost still to be confirmed.
The City would like to acknowledge
the financial contributions of the
following landowners for these three
projects, via the Yanchep Two Rocks
developer contribution fund:
Frasers Property Australia, Peet,
Yanchep Beach Joint Venture,
Capricorn Village Joint Venture,
Pindan Capital Two Rocks, Landcorp,
Primewest, Fini Group, Australand,
Zebra Properties and Townstyle.
The Yanchep playing fields have been eagerly awaited by many sporting clubs.
Yanchep Playing Fields
The Yanchep playing fields opened
in March, much to the delight of local
sporting clubs.
Members from Yanchep Redhawks
Football Club, Yanchep Redhawks
Cricket Club, Yanchep Junior Football
Club, Yanchep United Soccer Club
and Yanchep Little Athletics are all
benefiting from the new fields.
A children’s playground with shade
sails is expected to be in place next
month.
Council approved a $5.5 million
budget for the project and the
City plans to host an official opening
of the playing fields in autumn 2018
once user groups have settled in.
Mary Lindsay Homestead
At the time of going to print, the
redeveloped Mary Lindsay Homestead
building and public open space was
expected open to the public in
mid-February.
The building has been redeveloped
primarily as an art facility, with local
artists, schools and the Two Rocks
Yanchep Community Arts Network
(TRYCAN) expected to make full use
of the facility.
Pam Annesley, TRYCAN Chairperson,
said the group was thrilled that the Mary
Lindsay Homestead has been developed
for the cultural arts community.
“We’re planning workshops in
painting, drawing, polymer clay,
writing, journaling, photography, print
making and jewellery,” Pam said.
“We hope to have at least three Artists’
in Residence as well as children’s
school holiday workshops throughout
the year, and we will have a heritage
display area so school children can
learn about the history of the area.
“We will also hold solo and mixed
exhibitions for everyone to enjoy.
“A thank you must go to the vision of
the late Russell Perry and to the City
of Wanneroo for providing this cultural
centre for our community.”
SOCIAL
A HAPPY AND INCLUSIVE CITY
The City of Wanneroo asked
residents how we can help
support our community so
everyone is accepted, welcomed
and encouraged to participate and
contribute.
The City has three plans that guide
this work - Public Health Plan,
Access and Inclusion Plan and
Reconciliation Action Plan.
These plans are being reviewed and
will be further developed based on
community feedback.
We asked people to consider
the topics of health, diversity,
reconciliation and disability.
We asked for feedback on what
they thought were the top three
issues in the City, and the top three
things that would address these
issues.
More than 600 responses were
received through online surveys and
jar-polls at recent City events
(the City of Wanneroo Presents
Concert and Dogs Breakfast.)
Here’s what we learned:
Disability
The things that would make the
biggest improvement to disability
are: employment opportunities,
accessible buildings and facilities
and accessible services and events.
Diversity
The things that would make the
biggest improvement to diversity
include: improving communication
about programs and services,
promoting multiculturalism though
events and improving job readiness.
Reconciliation
The things that would make
the biggest improvement to
reconciliation are: cultural learning
sessions, celebrating significant
events, and public art and signage.
Health
The things that would make the
biggest improvements to health are:
affordable exercise options, mental
health support and walking or
cycling friendly neighbourhoods.
The City thanks everyone who
participated in these surveys.
Your valuable feedback will help
inform the City’s work on public
health, access and inclusion and
reconciliation.
