Side Trips
As far as I’m concerned, March has entered
like a lion. I have the white knuckles
to prove it.
As often happens during state basketball
tournament time,
Mother Nature decided
to bless us with another
winter storm. We
watched the forecast
over the weekend and
formed “what if” scenarios
about traveling
to Des Moines to watch
the Sheldon Orabs in
the biggest hoops contest
of a high school basketball
player’s career.
Our daughter is a senior
this year, so I knew

there was no way I’d convince her to stay home
and watch a live stream of the game. She and
a group of friends planned that they could all
ride together if they took a mini-van, and they
departed Sheldon early enough to get ahead of
bad weather.
Another mom and I planned to catch a ride
with her co-worker Monday after work, then
have the girls follow us home so they weren’t
traveling across the state by themselves.
After the game the weather had worsened,
so we gathered our daughters and their friends,
then shuffled people around so there were
adults behind the wheel of both vehicles.
Driving an unfamiliar vehicle through
winter weather conditions is not something I
would recommend, but by getting road reports
from other Sheldon families who were a few
miles ahead of us and simply being smart
about the speed with which we traveled, we arrived
safely back in Sheldon — nearly six hours
after we left Des Moines.
My neck was stiff, my shoulders tight and
I joked that my friend would need to pry my
fingers from the steering wheel, but we were all
home safe and sound.
Here’s hoping that’s the last storm of the
season.

Spencer high schoolers
present gallery show
Several emerging artists have
taken the leap to displaying their
work for all to see.
These particular artists are all students
at Spencer High School and will
have various pieces of work on display
at Arts on Grand from now through
April 6 in downtown Spencer.
Arts on Grand has done a high
school art exhibit since 1989 and
curator Joanne Schar has had a part
in putting together several of those
shows.
“It’s always fun because we’ve sometimes
seen these children at various
other stages. For some they are involved
in art in high school then go
on to have a major or minor in something
connected to art, like graphics
or fashion design,” Schar said. “That’s
exciting to see. It’s fun to know we
were part of what was happening with
them creatively at this time.”
The artists range from freshmen
to seniors and are students of Dave
Storm and Louise Kierscht. The class
levels range from beginning to advanced
and include drawing, painting
and clay.
“Normally, I just contact teachers and
just ask them to bring what they think is
a good representation of students work.
If they’re high school students and have
a work of art I want it on the wall. I trust
the teachers,” Schar said.
Visitors can vote for their favorite
piece, and the “Best in Show” winner
earns a punch card for five sessions
of open studio time at Arts on Grand
where they can come work in the
gallery’s downstairs studio in the evenings.
For all the students though, part
of the prize is just having their work
hang in a professional gallery.
“It’s good for the kids to put themselves
out there. For some that takes
quite a bit of nerve,” Schar said. “It’s
good for them to know they’ll have
the public, family, friends coming in
to see their work.”
The work ranges from graphite
and pencil drawings, to paintings,
sculptures and even a group origami
project.
Schar said she was never good at
drawing faces and thus really appreciated
the students’ efforts in that
regard.
“I find their daringness to draw faces
great, and I like seeing them working
in graphite. There is one drawing
of a cheerful little girl and I think the
artist really captured the personality
and that’s really wonderful,” Schar
said.
Schar also particularly enjoyed the
sea turtle sculptures and really all the
work the students put on display.
“You have to remember this is a very
personal, individual effort on their
part,” Schar said. “It’s just them, their
skills, their emotional reaction to the
world around them, and their willingness
to express those thoughts and
feelings in a work of art.”

A
play to make you think and a
night of fun are on the agenda
at the Memorial Auditorium
Performing Arts Center in Worthington,
MN.
On Thursday, March 15, there will
be a rare performance by the Children’s
Theatre Company of “Seedfolks.”
Then on Saturday, March 17,
St Patrick’s Day, there will be two performances
by Deuces Wild, a dueling
piano duo.
“Seedfolks” is based on a book by
the Newbery Medal-winning author
Paul Fleishman. It tells the story of an
immigrant neighborhood in Cleveland,
OH, that is transformed by a
community garden.
“This little girl starts to plant seeds
and starts a community garden and
each member of the community, who
come from all different backgrounds
and ages, they start planting seeds,
too,” said Tammy Makram, the executive
director of the Memorial Auditorium.
“It’s a wonderful story about
how a community comes together
and learns about each other and cares
about each other through this community
garden.”
The play is a one-woman, one-act
show where all eleven characters are
played by Sonja Parks.
“She is amazing. She plays all of
these different characters and you
have to see it to believe it,” Makram
said.
Even though the show is being put
on by Children’s Theatre Company,
based out of the Twin Cities, Makram
emphasizes that the show isn’t just for
little kids.
“The Children’s Theatre Company
only tours every few years so it’s very
special that they are coming here,”
Makram said. “It’s a show for ages
eight to 80-plus. It’s a story that everyone
can get something from.”
The show for the public will take
place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March
15. School children can come and see
the show for free. Tickets for adults are
$15 in advance and $20 at the door.
Then just two days later, the Memorial
Auditorium will play host to a St.
Patrick’s Day Party that will feature
Deuces Wild Dueling Piano for two
performances — a matinee at 2 p.m.
and an evening show at 7 p.m.
“The whole reason for bringing this
group in is because they invoke a party
atmosphere with all of their shows
and it’s something I’ve wanted to do
since I started here,” Makram said.
Deuces Wild, based out of the Twin
Cities, last performed at the Memorial
Auditorium four years ago and
Makram can’t wait for them to return
to the Worthington stage.
“I can’t describe their show any
other way than to say it’s one big party,”
Makram said with a laugh. “They
are very talented musicians who play
multiple instruments besides the
piano. I would say they are also comedians
— very witty and fun. It’s a huge
sing-a-long.”
A play and concerts in just two days
and the beauty is, you don’t have to

Nature Center’s pajama party celebrates color of spring
It may be hard to believe right now,
but spring is on its way. And soon
the white and gray of winter will
give way to shades of green.
To celebrate that fact, and learn a
few things about nature along the
way, the Dickinson County Nature
Center is hosting a St. Patty’s Pajama
Party on Friday, March 16, at 6:30
p.m.
“I thought it would be a fun event
for families to come out and enjoy,”
said Bryanna Kuhlman, environmental
education coordinator at the
nature center. “We’ll probably talk
about shamrocks and leprechauns a
little bit, but we’ll really talk about
all things green and the coming of
spring.”
Plants, trees, flowers, as well as
frogs, turtles and more, Kuhlman will
highlight the green in all forms of nature.
Leo, the northern leopard frog, will
likely make an appearance, as will
Capon, the baby snapping turtle, and
possibly Annie, the painted turtle as
well.
“We’ll bring out frogs and talk
about seeing them start to emerge
from ponds and other places. We’ll
talk about snapping turtles growing
algae on them, which is common
considering they stay underwater 90%
of the time,” Kuhlman said.
There will be a few activities for
families to enjoy as well.
One will be a gooey adventure as
Kuhlman leads those in attendance in
making some green slime.
“I’ll probably do it cooking-classstyle
up front with a helper,” Kuhlman
said. “We’ll have supplies for
everyone and they’ll get slime to take
home.”
There will also be story time, as
Kuhlman reads from the children’s
book “Green” by Laura Vaccaro
Seeger.
The book illustrates the many types
of the color green, especially highlighting
the forms it takes in nature.
Visitors will also get the chance to
snack on “leprechaun-dy” as they listen
to the story.
In a twist due to the evening time
frame of the activity, visitors are also
encouraged to wear their favorite pajamas.
“I think it’ll be a fun way to enjoy
everything kind of sleepover-style.
Kids love wearing their pajamas,” said
Kuhlman, who also noted she has her
own pair of green pajamas perfect for
the occasion. F

St. Patrick’s
Day Party

The luck of the Irish can be found
on this side of the pond on St.
Patrick’s Day in Emmetsburg.
Once again this year, the town will
be celebrating its Irish heritage with a
full week of fun, from Sunday, March
11, through Sunday, March 18.
It is a celebration that got its start
in 1961 when “a group of Irish lads,
believing ‘no one loves a parade
more than the Irish,’ donned green
derbies, carried their coat of arms
and marched proudly through the
main thoroughfare of Emmetsburg,
on March 17, the feast day of Saint
Patrick,” according to their website.
From that year onward, the celebration
has grown.
The event kicks off on Sunday, March
11, with the Junior Miss and Miss
Shamrock Pageants. Then things pick
up again on Thursday, March 15, with
an Irish Baked Potato Bar and the Emmetsburg
High School Talent Show.
Friday, March 16, will have a few
other fun activities including a Fish
Fry at the VFW Hall and a St. Pat’s
Bean Bag Tournament at the St. Pat’s
Heated Tent, which will be located at
10th Street and Broadway.
Saturday, March 17, is actually St.
Patrick’s Day, and is packed full of fun
events so there will be something for
everyone.
The day starts bright and early at
8:30 a.m. with the O’Round the Loch
Scholarship Run. That is followed
by the Chili Cook-off Contest; Kid
Zone with free face painting, crafts
and a donut hole eating contest; the
Langered Frolf Tournament, a frisbee
golf or disc golf tournament; and the
Potato-Bar-A-Palooza.
Chainsaw artist Jeff Klatt will also
be in attendance showing off his Irish
creations. Two of his carvings will be
auctioned off later that day. There is
also Irish Stew at the Multipurpose
Senior Center.
Then it’s time for the big event.
The parade.
It’s the part of the whole St. Patrick’s
Day Celebration that St. Pat’s Board
president Stephanie Mehan is looking
forward to the most.
“Having a lot of parade entries already
turned in I’m looking forward
to a great parade,” Mehan said. “As
many others do also, I always look
forward to hearing the Bagpipers play.
We have became great friends with
many of them as we had them play at
our wedding as well. Sadly, they will
be unable to attend this year.”
Following the parade there will be
the eighth annual Social Gathering
of the Clans that will take place at the
Emmetsburg Fire Department.
The Riviera Theatre will be hosting
a free movie following the parade.
This year the movie being shown is “A
Dog’s Purpose.”
The evening will wrap up with a
performance by Scott Larson and Keifer
Brandt Band at the St. Pat’s Heated
Tent from 6:30-10 p.m. There will be
Irish music and a beverage garden.
The event wraps up on Sunday,
March 18, with a pancake breakfast
at the VFW and a trap shoot at Sportman’s
Park. F

US Air Force Midwest Winds to perform
The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America’s Midwest Winds will present a
concert at Northwestern College in Orange City on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30
p.m. Admission to the concert is free and tickets are not required.
Presented in partnership with Northwestern College, this is a family-friendly, all-ages
event.
The Midwest Winds woodwind quintet is an ambassador of the Air Force Band of
Mid-America, providing a show to communicate esprit de corps and render honor to
our Airmen and country. The group offers a range of music from classical and contemporary
music to marches and patriotic crowd pleasers to light popular music.
