Skills Development
The government in South Africa has made it so
important that organisations empower their employees
through skills development, so much that
organisations are rewarded. Points for BBB-EE
scoring are allocated for skills development,
mostly for black employees. This covers from onthe-desk
training to on-the-job training. The challenge
with this policy for some organisations is
they run out of training options to meet this criterion.
It then becomes necessary for the employee
to contribute towards the training options the organisation
should take.
Do you want to improve your skills as an employee,
if yes, why do you feel you need to?
Skills development is about improving the skill
one already has. Some are born with the skill
and others acquire it through work experience.
When would it be necessary then to improve that
skill? The fact is, the work place is forever evolving
and there is always someone that can action
the skill better than the other. Because of that,
one cannot be comfortable with the understanding
that they were either born with the skill or had
already polished it when they acquired it. The
changing times require that one must always
keep up with those times and changes.
How then can one keep abreast with the changes
in time and skills needed for those changes?

As previously mentioned, the government in
South Africa rewards companies when they
develop their employee’s skills and most
companies take advantage of this benefit.

Therefore, it is imperative that you understand
what your company offers in terms of
skills development. It is of great importance
that you utilise those opportunities whether
you believe you need to or not, because the
truth is you do need to.
There are always workshops offered for
particular fields like Accounting, by the organisations
that make it their business to
keep abreast of the changes and skills requirements
for each field. Make it your business
to know these organisations and be a
member if you need to. That way you will
always know when there are new changes
and which workshops to attend
Surf the net, read books and watch news
relevant to your field of employment and
career. Always feed yourself with relevant
information, you can never know enough.
The high rate of unemployment in South Africa is
said to be driven by lack of skills required for the
kind of jobs available, jobs that drive economic
growth. Therefore, studying or pursuing a career
in a field that guarantees employment or entrepreneurship
opportunities, but aligned with your
passion is a must.
It is also said that a higher diploma is equivalent
to a university degree. Therefore, to place yourself
in a favourable position you cannot end your
studies with a Diploma while you want to be considered
the same as a University graduate.
Know what you want to achieve, where you
want to be in the future and develop your skill
accordingly.
