Civilian Personnel Officer
“Don’t limit yourself and don’t ever give up. Realize
you’re capable of doing whatever it is that you want
to do. Don’t let yourself be limited by external forces.
If it’s a desire of your heart, go forward. Don’t be
discouraged if you don’t get there the first time, keep
going until you reach your destination.”
Kiersten Drew
Outdoor Recreation Director
“Hard work pays off. Even when challenges come,
don’t take the easy road. Learn from your mistakes
and always push forward. At the end of day everything
will work out – you might have to do things you don’t
want to do at times, but there’s always light at the end
of the tunnel.”
Heather Stanfield
Senior Master Sgt., usaf
“Don’t let someone say you can’t do something because
you can. You limit yourself, other people can’t limit you.
You define you, no one else defines you. Don’t allow
anyone else to paint you in a box. Often we let peer
pressure dictate who we are and what we can do based
off of others. We’re a lot stronger than we think we are.
Use your voice, speak up, be heard.”
The word “empowerment” has expanded, inverted, politicized and
is now bracingly synonymous with “Women’s History Month.”
It stirs inspiration when spoken aloud and paints a picture of
“Rosie the Riveter” or “Wonder Woman.” Centuries of extraordinary
women collectively depict a portrait of strength for today’s generation
of feminists. They continue to infuse “power” into the ever-inspiring
word “empowerment.”
In honor of Women’s History Month, 374th Force Support Squadron
spoke with a select group of female leaders within its dynamic
organization about empowerment, what inspires them and how
decades of women’s movements paved paths for them that were never
before imaginable.
Before Women’s History Month was officially recognized by U.S. Congress
in 1987, an International Women’s Day was celebrated globally in the early
1900s. For nearly 11 decades, women across the world have joined together
to overcome barriers of unjust treatment. Chief Master Sgt. Tresse King has
dedicated her career to speaking up and igniting change, “It’s important to
step up and be the voice for those who feel voiceless. Change came because
I challenged the status quo,” she said. Defying the odds is the essence of
Women’s History Month – with generations of activists fervently working
to triumph and prevail over hardships of gender inequality. One of the most
influential women in history, Susan B. Anthony, fought passionately for
the women’s right to vote and was a leader in the abolitionist movement.
From suffragettes to women in government, millions of defiant advocates
“Life is about taking chances and building
relationships and friendships. If you don’t take risks
or challenges in your life, then you’ll never know your
potential. Never be afraid to make big decisions even
if you’re not sure about the outcome. Don’t be afraid
to jump into something because that’s how you make
your way through life. Make that leap and you will
reach potentials that you may not know you had.”
Jennifer Smith
Capt., usaf
“Remind yourself of what you have been through to
get to this point. Have mantra’s that say, ‘yes I can do
it,’ and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. You
are smart, you are a great leader, you are beautiful.”
Tresse King
Chief Master Sgt., usaf
“Just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it can’t
be done. You can be the one to do it! People say, ‘I
can’t,’ but my golden rule when people say why – I
say why not? You have to reach beyond the gap and
find your own path to reaching your goals. Everyone
has their own unique way, so don’t be discouraged if
you don’t make it the same way someone else did.”
like her have triumphed over social norms to create more opportunities for
the modern-day woman to have an advantage and a voice in today’s society.
“I’m often the only woman in a room full of a dozen men in uniform or
more, which at times can be really intimidating. But I feel empowered to
speak up which is essential in my position because my job is to support my
Airmen and provide them the proper tools to be successful,” Capt. Jennifer
Smith, superintendent of Sustainment Services said. During early colonial
times, women served in the U.S. military working strictly during times of war,
primarily in roles of non-combatant support. Nearly three centuries later in
1948, Congress legally permitted women to serve as permanent members
of the military. Since then, military service women continue to make great
strides which has been a driving force for Smith since her childhood.
“Growing up in a corrupt and violent area, I was inspired to join the Air Force
to protect the people I love and it’s empowering to have the choice to make
a difference in this world,” she said. Smith was afforded the opportunity to
influence change as a direct impact of efforts made by centuries of women
before her who fought for the right to serve in the U.S. military.
Similarly to Smith, Chief King, superintendent of 374 FSS, also wanted
to make a difference by joining the Air Force. With a highly decorated 26-
year career, King has achieved the highest non-commissioned officer rank
which encompasses roughly only one percent of the Air Force enlisted force.
According to the Military Personnel Data System (MilPDS), women make
up approximately 19 percent of active duty enlisted and 21 percent active
duty officers. Even in small numbers, women continue to break barriers and
rise through the ranks in spite of challenges. In 2016, Air Force General Lori
Robinson became the highest ranking woman in U.S. military history, leading
a unified combatant command. Last year, three female Marines became the
first to graduate from infantry school. Most recently, CNN reported two
women currently training with other potential officers in hopes of becoming
the first female Navy SEAL. King believes, “Change doesn’t always come
from taking big steps, but rather little steps can lead to big changes.”
Despite centuries of gender inequality, women in
“
the military recognize the importance of empowering
active duty service members regardless of a person’s
gender. “If I’m still growing, then I’m growing with
my Airmen. Some of my most memorable moments
are mentoring Airmen and guiding them on paths
towards success,” said Senior Master Sgt. Stanfield,
superintendent of Military Personnel Section (MPS).
Stanfield’s position encompasses more than just mentorship, she seeks
self-improvement by pushing herself out of her comfort zone, finding
ways to improve her communications, and promoting overall growth.
Simultaneously Smith maintains her passion for Airmen development, “My
job is to empower Airmen and be the liaison between leadership and my
team. When it comes down to it, our flight is building resilient Airmen and
when a contingency happens, we’re going to be sustaining resilient Airmen.”
Like other military service women before them, Smith and King learned
to overcome adversity and have achieved profound accomplishments which
may affect change and alter history. Countless women have been inspired
by females leading the charge including Civilian Personnel Officer Renee
Cooper. “I was given a trial by fire. My boss told me, ‘you either sink or
swim, but I expect you to swim.’ I remember feeling very overwhelmed,
and one night I came home and felt like I was going
“
to drown. But at that moment, I adopted the attitude
of getting up and going on no matter what. I made the
decision that I was going to flourish,” she said. During
Cooper’s extensive career of 20 years in staffing and
employee relations, rising to the challenge of new responsibilities led her to
Yokota AB where she provides guidance to installation commanders and
develops world-class employees. She believes one of the key elements to
helping employees grow professionally is concentrating on interpersonal
– to have someone walk away and be encouraged, not discouraged,”
Cooper expressed.
Today 374 FSS boasts an impressive number of female leaders and staff
whom are essential to executing the mission every day. The success of these
women is attributed to and an extension of past heroine’s spirits. They work
together to ensure Yokota’s community continues to thrive through effective
programming. “Yokota has been one of the largest
FSS operations I have ever supported. A lot goes into
planning events, from researching and contracting
entertainers to scheduling events and coordinating
with support agents to put together a solid event plan.
Through these events, we always strive to best serve
our Airmen and to build a stronger community,” said
Michele Jacobs, Community Centers director.
Having served almost two decades in civil service, Jacobs works with a
dynamic team of talented individuals including Outdoor Recreation (ODR)
director, Kiersten Drew – another female pioneer making a significant
impact on Yokota’s community. She began her career 13 years ago at Osan
AB and over the years she has witnessed much change within the civilian
military service. “As a woman in the career field that I am in, I feel like it
has always been a man’s world. I have often been underestimated, but that’s
what has driven me to challenge the unconventional. When I first started
with ODR, there were very few female leadership roles and I’m somebody
who wants to push the envelope so I dared to change that. And part of the
challenge is making sure the programs we provide positively impact the
community’s morale and build a stronger community regardless of how my
gender is perceived,” Drew said.
Jacobs is inspired every day by the trailblazing
women she works side-by-side with, “It’s truly an
honor to serve the military community and be able
to work with so many talented women in my flight,
squadron, and Air Force” said Jacobs. Like her, we are
also inspired everyday by the work and contributions made by women in the
military; both active duty and civilian. 374 FSS celebrates your hard work
and dedication to empowering the next generation!
Affectionately called
sakura by Japanese, the recognition
of cherry blossoms began over 1,000 years ago during the
Heian period in Japan. People were so breathtaken by their beauty that
they would a stare endlessly in awe, unknowingly planting the seed for a
new tradition called hanami, which directly translates to “watch the flower.”
During modern-day hanami, families, friends and couples will gather
beneath sakura trees to enjoy the view as they picnic, sip sake or simply relax.
In the early 1970s, the Japanese government planted sakura trees on McGuire
Avenue at Yokota Air Base as a sign of friendship. Over 40 years later, we are
using those same majestic cherry blossoms to build a sense of community
with our Japanese neighbors.
In early April, Yokota opens its east gate to allow our off-base friends an
opportunity to admire these symbols of friendship lining McGuire Avenue.
Grab a picnic blanket and head out early to secure a spot under the sakura.
Wander the street and peruse different food and beverage vendors. Whether
you’re interested in iconic Japanese festival food or looking forward to a piece
of home with traditional American food – the Sakura Festival has it all. But
don’t stick to your picnic blanket, there is still plenty to see and hear. With live
performances from the PACAF Band and the Samurai Taiko Drummers, as
well as face painting and balloon artists, there is fun and entertainment readily
available for the entire family.
Sakura typically stays in bloom for about two weeks during the spring.
Don’t miss your chance to experience this piece of Japanese culture
in your own backyard!
