News from Christ Church C.E. Primary School
Learning, Listening, Living
Did you know that volunteering has been recommended by the NHS? Numerous scientific studies have shown
that people who volunteer are healthier and feel more positive about life than those who don’t volunteer.
The NHS estimates that an amazing 44% of you volunteer at least once a year for something outside of your
work, family or home. Thank you to all of you who are already volunteers!
As a school we welcome volunteers in a number of capacities:
Reading Support – we have valued volunteers who come into school for a
couple of hours each week and talk to children about books and hear them
read. The children love it.
Governors –the school’s ‘critical friend’ asking questions about the education
we provide for children and making sure that we use public funds wisely.
Open the Book team – coming into school every Monday to share a Bible story
with the children through drama and storytelling.
If you would like to volunteer there are opportunities, please be in touch. In
particular, our Governing Body has space for a co-opted member and we are
looking for someone with current or past experience in either education or
business. Other governors are very supportive and this could be a great way of
investing in our children and is looked on favourably by many employers. If you
want to find out about governors or other ways of volunteering do contact the
School Office. As with all work with children, a DBS check is required (criminal
records) and we provide training and support to help you enjoy the role.
For the summer term the whole school has an ‘Animals’ theme
and we are looking forward to a visit from ‘The Animal Man’ with
reptiles and insects, at the start of term and a visit to the Safari
Park, later in the summer.
Red Class: Year R and Year 1
Red Class are thinking about Jungle animals.
Green Class: Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4
Green Class are studying animals and plants in different habitats.
Yellow Class: Year 4, Year 5 and Y6
Yellow Class are thinking about life cycles. We are also working on a joint Primary Stars programme with
Shrewsbury Town Football Club for a day a week
Remember we are the catchment school for many villages: Cressage, Cross Houses, Harley, Cound,
Coundmoor and Sheinton but we also have children attending from further afield. We work closely with
Childrensworld UK who are onsite and offer an “Outstanding” (Ofsted) nursery and wrap-around childcare
for before/after school and the holidays. Ring the office for more details on 01952 510383.
The Reverend Sarah Hare writes
Dear Friends
I love this time of year when week by week, we see more flowers coming out on the sides of
the roads and in the hedgerows as we fully enter Spring, although you might be forgiven for
being unsure if we are in Spring yet with the ongoing threat of more snow! Following the last
lot of snow, as it was finally melting I saw different coloured crocus peeking out through the
blanket of snow – a sign of new life indeed. As I look around at the last of the snowdrops, the
crocus and the daffodils which are just coming out I am amazed again at the world and it’s
beauty and the cycle that it goes through.
I think the beauty and variety around us shows something of the extravagance of God and it is
something that I have been thinking about recently as I have been fortunate to receive the
extravagance of others through hospitality, through the time of individuals and through their
generosity in many different ways. We have a God who is always extravagant with us and as
we enter April this year, April 1 st is Easter Day, the day when we think about the ultimate new
life – the new life that we have received because of the life, the death and the resurrection of
Jesus.
In Holy Week as we lead up to the beginning of April, we will remember the incredible and
amazing fact that God sent his own son to earth for us because he loves us and wanted to
have an everlasting relationship with us. The life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus
shows God’s love and extravagance for each one of us. Billy Graham who died in February
this year and will be remembered for his preaching and rallies around the world said this:
“God proved his love on the cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying
to the world, ‘I love you.’ The story did not end here on the cross as on Easter Day we
remember that life overcame death when Jesus rose from the dead and met the disciples
time and time again to show them that he – Jesus had risen from the dead, he had the marks
of the nails, but he was there with them again. He ate with them, he talked to them and he
walked with them. Jesus had overcome death, he had beaten the darkness and made a new
relationship with God for us that we could live with him forever.
Whatever is happening in your life today, I pray that you will know the beauty and the joy and
the wonder of that first Easter morning, of the hope that Easter brings to us and may you
know the blessings and the extravagance of God who loves you, with you this Eastertime and
always.
WELCOME
ATCHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS – MARCH 2018
Welcome to the Spring edition of Atcham Parish Council’s newsletter. The council held both the
Annual Parish Meeting and its regular council meeting in March. These meetings were also the last
for the clerk, Rebecca Turner who is sadly leaving to take up a role at another parish council. The
council welcomed Lorna Pardoe as the new clerk and she will take up post on 1 st April 2018. Lorna
is also clerk at Berrington and Uffington.
PLANNING
The council agreed comments on the following applications:
17/05812/FUL - Proposed Car Dealership And Premises South Of, Thieves Lane,
Shrewsbury, Shropshire - Erection of new car dealership building comprising car showroom
and servicing workshop and valeting facilities, plus standalone vehicle repair and prep
building, and drive-through car wash, together with staff, customer and storage parking and
external used car display area
Comments: It was resolved to object due to concern re highways – adequacy of the access
for car transporters and concern re traffic using the bypass rather than Emstrey. Access to
the dealership for customers being too close to Emstrey.
17/06157/FUL - Proposed Commercial Development Land To The South Of, Thieves Lane,
Shrewsbury, Shropshire - Hybrid application (part full, part outline) - Full - erection of a petrol
filling station (Sui Generis) and drive through cafe (Use Class A3/A5) together with the
creation of a new access, parking, landscaping and various other infrastructure works.
Outline - provision of a new office park (Use Class B1) to include access (some matters
reserved)
Comments: It was resolved to object due to intensification of highways use and lack of need
for a further petrol station/coffee outlet. Lack of need for the offices as there are already
vacant premises in the area.
18/00293/FUL - Chilton Cottage, Atcham, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY5 6QP - Erection of
two storey extensions and detached garage
Comments: It was resolved to object to the boundary wall due to height and impact on
visibility.
18/00111/FUL - Erection of one poultry unit (32,000 birds), associated feed bins, formation of
a vehicular access
Comments: It was resolved to support the application as diversification of farm use and the
fact it is not intensive.
OTHER PARISH MATTERS
Grange Farm contractors speeding – request for signage erected on entry and exit from the farm
to remind drivers to calm speeds
Cllr. Home-Roberts has spoken to the contractors about speeding before – will do so again and
will try to organise signage.
Grange Farm contractors (gardening contractors) fires
The farm has got a waste exemption for burning green waste and wood. The contractor has
been asked not burn fires unless supervised.
Malthouse Lane-deposits of mud and dirt from farm vehicles & request for dedicated road
sweeper where needed
Cllr. Home-Roberts said contractors try to use alternative access via fields when weather makes
it possible to. The council will write to Longnor estates to arrange a meeting with the managing
agent.
St. Eata’s Lane fence
The condition of the fence was raised. The developer is no longer in business so it was
suggested the residents need to organise repairs.
Malthouse Lane and roads and pavements into Mytton and Mermaid - poor state of repair
pooling of rain
Cllr. Wild reported that this is in the works programme but timescale is not known. These matters
will be reported to highways and raised with owner of Mytton and Mermaid.
Atcham bridge surface and condition of posts entering the bridge
To be raised with English Heritage.
Dog fouling
Signs have gone up in an effort to deter this
Concerns re speeding – raised option of CSW.
Residents are asking for speed limit review. The parish can wite to the police to review this if a
formal request is made by the community. We are still looking for volunteers for Community
Speedwatch – please contact the Clerk if you may be interested.
Neighbourhood Planning
A parishioner from Cross Houses asked if the Parish Council would consider doing a
Neighbourhood Plan jointly with them to ask more CIL funding. This is a complex and costly
project and would require formal consideration by the Parish Council.
MEETING DATES
The meeting dates for forthcoming council year as follows: 9 th
Malthouse and start at 7.30pm.
May. All meetings are at The
Wilfred Owen 100:
Great Shropshire war poet
remembered
The 4th November
2018 marks the
centenary of the day
that the Shropshire
poet and soldier fell in
battle at the tender age
of 25, just seven days
before the Armistice
brought the conflict to
an end.
The centenary is being marked in his home
county of Shropshire by a series of events over
the last 100 days from 4 August to 4 November.
With a focus on Shrewsbury and Oswestry,
Shropshire’s Wilfred Owen 100 will remember
him with poetry readings, music, talks, new
installations, themed guided walks and much
more.
Events will reflect on the emotion, exhibitions,
installations and projects from the 2014 – 2018
commemorative period and celebrate one of
Shropshire’s most renowned sons. A number of
these events are being supported by the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
The project will also harness archives, artefacts
and memories held out in the community by
organisations and individuals, and secure their
preservation and accessibility for the future. The
ambitious aim of this partnership project is to
involve every community in this large county
and to reach audiences of all ages.
A free programme of all the cultural arts
activities and events across the county will be
published in May 2018.
GARDENING MATTERS
Top Tips courtesy of Tim Robinson, Manager of Love Plants
Colourful Camellias
Camellias provide a splash of colour when little else is blooming during the winter and spring. They
are easy to grow and popular for their bold evergreen foliage and abundance of showy, white, pink,
red, or yellow flowers. An elegant shrub for a border or woodland garden and make excellent
specimen plants both outdoors in open ground or in containers.
Camellias are woodland plants that grow best in light, partial or dappled shade, in a site sheltered
from cold, dry winds and avoiding early morning sun, as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold
winds and late frosts. They prefer free-draining conditions with plenty of organic matter such as leaf
mould, incorporated into the soil. Camellias must have plenty of water during their growing season,
between April and October; the critical period for watering is when the flower buds are forming,
from midsummer to early autumn.
Camellias are best pruned in spring immediately after flowering if needed. They will tolerate hard
pruning but generally only need to be lightly trimmed or have any branches that spoil the
appearance of the plant removed and pruned back to an outward facing leaf node.
Camellias are evergreen shrubs their leaves are replaced every few years; each year a proportion of
the foliage (mainly older leaves near the base and within the plant) are shed, usually in spring and
summer. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
The ideal time to plant Camellias is autumn to late spring. When planting in a border they prefer
moist but well drained, humus-rich, acidic soil; with a pH of 5.5 – 6.5. If the level is higher or lower
than this, they are unable to absorb the necessary minerals for healthy growth. They do not like to
be planted too deep; the top of the root ball should be level with the firmed soil.
An acidic fertiliser, sulphate of ammonia or sulphate of potash can be added to the soil when back
filling the hole. If you prefer to use organic fertilisers: blood, fish and bone or seaweed products can
be used instead.
Once planted it is a good idea to add a mulch of leaf mould or shredded bark, 5-7cm (2-3in) deep to
hold in the moisture and keep the roots cool.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in mid-spring and again if necessary in the early summer but do not
overfeed, feeding after July can also cause bud drop.
Camellias are easy to grow in containers of ericaceous (acidic) potting compost. Add ericaceous,
slow-release fertiliser pellets to the potting compost when planting up the container.
Rainwater is ideal for watering Camellias; tap water in hard water districts often contains too much
calcium; although it can be used satisfactorily for a month or two in the summer.
Top five Camellias: -
Camellia ‘April Kiss’ – is a cold hardy hybrid with compact, moderate growth. Abundant, formal
double flowers are red-pink, bloom from late winter to early spring. Maximum height 3–4m (9-12’) x
spread 1.2-1.5m (4-5’).
Camellia japonica ‘Brushfield’s Yellow’ – have anemone form, double flowers which are creamy white
with a light-yellow centre during January to April. It is an upright evergreen shrub the one pictured
is grown as a standard which will grow up to 2m. Prune immediately after flowering and keep
watered in the summer to ensure plenty of flowers for the following year.
Camellia x williamsii ‘Debbie’ – produces magnificent large blooms from February to April. The
williamsii varieties shed their flowers as they fade and have smaller leaves so are generally better
able to cope with more exposed positions. These hybrids also flower early and over a long period
even in areas with low light intensity such as the north of Britain. Maximum height 1.8m (6’) spread
1.2m (4’).
Camellia ‘Lady Vansittart’ – produces unusual white striped and spotted rose pink, semi-double
flowers with wavy petals from February and continuing until April. Maximum height 1.2 – 1.5m (4-
5’).
Camellia ‘Desire’ – has a vigorous, upright habit and formal double flowers up to 10cm across which
are white to pale pink with a deeper pink edge. Maximum height 2.5-4m (8’-13’) x spread 1.5-2.5m
(5’-7’).
