Life in the kitchen: simplified and organized
How ShelfGenie
saved one kitchen
and can save yours
Amanda Stoll, 22CMBoost
Fed up with unloading
cabinets and struggling
to reach cookware cornered
on shelves, Priscilla
needed a magician — or a
genie.
ShelfGenie simple custom
kitchen-organization
system solved Priscilla’s
kitchen woes.
Priscilla contacted
ShelfGenie for a complimentary
in-home design
consultation, and the session
couldn’t have gone
better, she said, adding that
she was impressed the designer
listened and understood
her frustration and
needs and was ready with
MKT-5894G-A-A1
suggestions specific to her
space.
ShelfGenie’s custommade
Glide-outs were
measured and built to fit
into her existing cabinets
and pantries without requiring
any remodeling.
The installation went
extremely well.
“He was clean, he was
efficient [and] he cleaned
up after the job was done,”
Priscilla said about Chris,
who installed her shelves
in less than one day.
After organizing her
newly revamped kitchen
spaces, Priscilla embraced
an entirely different and
simpler experience in her
kitchen. Everything she
needs is now right at her
fingertips and doesn’t require
her getting on her
knees or require her to
wrestle things from the
back.
“In one section where
my pots and pans were, I
used to have to take just
about the whole stack of
pans out to get to the one
that’s in the middle or that
one that’s at the bottom,
and the pans were very
heavy,” she said. “So now
I have two drawers: one is
pots, and the other is pans.
“It has just simplified
my life.”
Before the ShelfGenie
drawers were installed,
Priscilla was working with
wire shelving in her pantries,
while smaller items,
such as zip-top baggies
and plastic wrap, were
stored in less-than-ideal
cardboard boxes.
Housing canned goods
in a more convenient space
is just one of many examples
of how ShelfGenie
Ready for life's milestones?
Let's plan.
has improved the functionality
of Priscilla’s kitchen.
It has trimmed her time
prepping and organizing
so she can get back to what
she enjoys most: cooking
and spending time in the
kitchen with her family.
The ShelfGenie Glideouts
have given her back
a lot of space she lost to
inefficiency, so now even
more items, such as water
bottles and drinks that
were stored in the basement,
can be stored in the
kitchen where they belong.
With the amount of time
spent Priscilla spends with
her family in the kitchen,
she said the drawers are
“worth their weight in
gold.”
“I’m just thrilled with
them. I’m just thrilled,”
she said. “I feel organized.
I can see things, and I can
get at things. It’s just a
real, real good day every
day. Every day is a good
day in my kitchen. It’s not
frustrating anymore.”
Maintaining healthy hair with Pascal pour Elle
Now that the winter months are approaching,
the days are starting to get
cooler, it’s time to think about the ways
you can protect your hair from winter
damage. Here are a few tips from us at
Pascal pour Elle to help you maintain
healthy, beautiful hair this upcoming season.
During the winter months, it’s a great
idea to treat your hair once a week to a
deep conditioning regimen. This will help
replenish the moisture which tends to get
depleted from things such as dry heat in
your home and cold winter air. We recommend
Kerastase Fusion Treatments,
which are done right here in the salon.
The treatment is customized for your specific
hair needs. A great at home treatment
we recommend would be Masquintense
by Kerastase. There is one for fine hair,
or thick hair. Work through your wet hair
from root to ends leaving it on your hair
Solve height loss
naturally!
for 10-20 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
Static can also become a real problem
when the weather conditions are cold and
dry. A great way to combat static is to use
a good heat styling product before you
blowdry your hair. Protect Me, by Pascal
Paris, is not only a priming heat protector,
it also is a anti-humidity spray. We also
find that minimizing your hair-washing to
two to three times per week in the winter
months, will prevent your hair from
drying out too much. Making sure your
hair is completely dry before leaving the
house is also a must. The moisture in your
hair combined with the cold air can add
further damage to your hair by making it
more brittle and dry.
A regular trim is a great way to keep
your hair healthy. A light dusting of the
ends every four to six weeks will reduce
the chance of drying, splitting ends. Bottom
line: Your hair is 90 percent of your
selfie.
15 reasons to use in-home care for your loved ones
What is widely viewed as the
best and most viable delivery of
health care in America? Infirmed
(informed) and elderly individuals
have been found to prefer
home care by 90 percent over
comparable institutional care.
What are some of the reasons
for in-home elderly care? This
article counts the many ways –
15 in fact – that it is far preferable
– at least to seniors – over
a nursing home or other kind of
assisted living.
1. Home care is delivered, as you
would expect, at home. Dorothy
said it best: “There’s no
place like home.” Certainly,
this is a statement that most
people wholeheartedly embrace.
There is nothing like
the comfort and familiarity of
being cared for in the comfort
and security of “home sweet
home.”
2. In-home care helps keep families
together. Compare this to
taking an elderly person away
from their loved ones. At no
time is family more important
than during times of illness.
3. Elderly care helps seniors
maintain their independence.
Home care allows seniors to
continue to live in the place
they function best – their
home.
4. Home care prevents or puts
off institutional life. Living
in a long-term care facility is
unfamiliar and can often be intimidating.
Most people prefer
postponing the inevitable as
long as possible.
5. Home care helps promote
healing. Medical evidence
shows that people recover
more quickly at home.
6. In-home elderly care is safer.
It’s no secret that people
pick up infections and other
complications when they live
amid a chronically ill population
(such as in a hospital or
long-term care facility). This
is obviously not the case when
cared for at home.
7. Home care means personalized
care. Care becomes a
one-to-one proposition in your
home. You get this nowhere
else.
8. Home care often gets the entire
family involved in providing
care. Immediate and extended
family members often
take an active role at different
times of the day.
9. Home care reduces the stress
that often accompanies illness.
Illness increases anxiety and
stress, but it’s not nearly as
great when care is practiced in
the home.
10. Home care is the most effective
form of health care delivered
in terms of customer
satisfaction. It all comes back
to the fact that people prefer to
be at home.
11. Home care is delivered by a
special group of people. People
don’t work in the home
care industry for the money.
They do it for the emotional
satisfaction of helping others
and for making a difference in
the life of another.
12. Home care extends life.
Studies by nursing schools
and government agencies have
found that home care extends
life. Visits by home care personnel
often provide spiritual
as well as medical support.
13. Home care improves one’s
quality of life. For most people,
the quality of their life is
far better at home than anywhere
else.
14. Home care is less expensive
than other forms of care. The
cost of home care is always
less expensive than hospitalization
and almost always
more affordable than nursing
home or assisted living care,
which can cost $90,000 a year
or more.
15. Technology will make home
care even more desirable in
the future. Medical and technological
advances will soon
make it possible to diagnose,
monitor and treat illness at a
distance. This will help make
home care even more of a preferred
option.
People are living longer
Ask Mary Ann: When
is the right time to
move into a Memory
Care Community?
Mary Ann, I have been
caring for my mother, who
has dementia, in my home.
How can I know when the
right time comes to move
her into a memory care
community?
Most of us caring for
our loved one come from
a subjective place. I have
found that the decision is
easier to make if you step
back and look at it more
objectively.
We want to keep the
promises we have made
to care for our loved ones.
Sometimes that includes
keeping them at home.
However, it has been proven
that when one is diagnosed
with this disease,
they have a better experience
of life in a community
where others are experiencing
the same emotions,
feelings and behaviors.
In both my personal and
professional experience, I
have found that, surprisingly
your loved one will
have an easier time adjusting
to what he or she are
experiencing because they
will be able to make new
friends and it will bring
them to an emotional comfort
level that they would
not experience if they were
to stay in their homes.
Family members don’t
realize that being in their
homes won’t give them
the opportunity for the social
interaction, exercise,
reminiscing or connecting
to past interests.
The other opportunity
that coming into a community
can give them is the
many types of engagement
that they will be involved
in, which is extremely
important to slow down
the process of the disease.
Lives change for those on
this journey when in the
proper environment. The
time to choose to move
to a community is sooner
rather than later.
So, once a diagnosis
is made, especially if it
is very early onset, one
should begin to create criteria
for what you would
like your loved one to experience
when living in a
memory care community.
Chestnut Square: A beautiful community with new friends waiting
Since opening in 2003,
Chestnut Square at The
Glen has been one of the
North Shore’s most popular
choices for independent
senior living. The reasons
are many, but to fully understand
what makes the
community so special, we
think our residents, families
and staff give the best
perspective of all:
“Moving to Chestnut
Square was one of the best
decisions my wife and I
ever made... our only regret
is that we didn’t do
this sooner! There’s always
something new and
exciting happening and
we’ve never met a nicer
group of people. When
my brother saw how happy
we were, he decided to
make Chestnut Square his
new home also.”
-Don Klein
“I wanted to find a
place where I felt an instant
connection with the
residents and the staff, and
Chestnut Square gave me a
warm feeling the moment I
walked through the door. I
especially love all the
events...I’ve done more in
eight months than I have in
the past eight years.”
-Dee Knapik
“We wanted to find the
best location, lifestyle and
value, and that’s why we
chose Chestnut Square.
Everyone we meet is
friendly, the meals have
been excellent and we’ve
got the Glenview Senior
Center right across the
street.”
-Clayton
and Doris Welter
“I’ve worked at Chestnut
Square for over 10
years and the residents
have become a special part
of my family. Everybody
is so nice... it’s why I love
my job!”
-Maria Latacz
“The residents are so
welcoming... they want
you to feel part of their
community from day
one. There are so many
activities and excursions
to choose from. Units are
well-maintained. There
is formal dining every
night and brunch on Sundays.
My mom is safe,
happy and close to her
family now. I have Chestnut
and the wonderful staff
there to thank for that.”
4 surprising insights into life with Parkinson’s Disease
StatePoint Media
Over 1 million Americans
live with Parkinson’s
disease, and while some
symptoms are easier to see,
there are a range of harderto-detect
non-movement
symptoms that can have an
impact on daily life.
Recently, the Parkinson
& Movement Disorder
Alliance, a non-profit organization
offering programming
for those in the
Parkinson’s disease community,
surveyed over 650
people with Parkinson’s
and care partners to better
understand how nonmovement
symptoms impact
their lives and quality
of life.
Stop by our booth to see Pilates in action!
1770 1st St #205, Highland Park
The results:
1. Parkinson’s disease affects
more than motor
function. Every person
with Parkinson’s disease
may experience different
symptoms, both motor
and non-movement
related.
In fact, nearly all (90
percent) of survey respondents
experienced
non-movement symptoms,
such as:
• Sleep problems (84 percent)
• Cognitive challenges (75
percent)
• Anxiety (65 percent)
• Depression (55 percent)
• Hallucinations (41 percent)
• Delusions (24 percent)
2. Non-movement symptoms
can be more challenging
than motor
symptoms. Of those
who experienced, or reported,
non-movement
symptoms, 84 percent
felt that they have a
negative impact on quality
of life, and about half
rated them as more challenging
or much more
challenging to live with
than movement symptoms.
3. Daily living is impacted
by hard-to-see
symptoms. Parkinson’s
disease changes how
patients and their care
partners think about the
future and cope with
day-to-day living.
In fact, non-movement
symptoms negatively
impacted the ability
to:
• Sleep (84 percent)
• Plan for future events
(76 percent)
• Socialize (71 percent)
• Make plans with family
and friends (70 percent)
• Be intimate with their
partner (68 percent)
• Complete household
chores (68 percent)
• Run errands (67 percent)
When people with
Parkinson’s experience
non-movement symptoms,
care partners are
impacted, too. In fact,
psychosis symptoms in
patients with Parkinson’s
are a strong predictor of
increased care partner
burden, and those with
hallucinations have a
2.5-fold greater risk for
nursing home admission.
4. Reporting symptoms is
crucial. It’s important
to report all symptoms
to a doctor, as there are
many different treatment
options.
New educational resources
and impact of nonmovement
symptoms
of Parkinson’s can be
Vi at The Glen: An unexpected
impression of senior living
There are a lot of misconceptions
about retirement
communities among
seniors. One of the most
common, and coincidentally
most easily debunked,
is that moving to
a senior living community
means giving up the
independence you enjoy
in a single-family home.
It’s simply not true. If you
want proof, ask any resident
of Vi at The Glen.
Somewhere in the
Neighborhood of Perfect
Vi at The Glen is situated
in Glenview and combines
all the warmth of an
active, tight-knit neighborhood
with all the benefits
of a Life Plan Community.
In addition to gorgeous
apartments, Vi at The
Glen offers private villa
homes with the space and
independence of a singlefamily
residence, without
responsibilities like maintenance
or upkeep.
The 26-acre private
community also has access
to exceptional dining,
housekeeping and amenities
like an on-site fitness
center, salon and salt-filtered
pool.
Vi at The Glen residents
Ray and Joan Racelis
looked at six Life Plan
Communities in three
states, but from the moment
they found their villa
at Vi at The Glen, they
knew they were home.
“We were attracted to
the size,” Ray said. “Our
villa has a two-car garage,
a spare bedroom for
guests, and we still have
a den, which was really
important for us—it’s our
communication center!”
Loved ones will find it
accommodating, too
The ample space of villa
floor plans at Vi at The
Glen provides residents
another very key benefit:
the ability to comfortably
host family and friends.
“Residents who have
moved into the villas
told us they enjoy having
the space of a singlefamily
home to entertain
their families,” said Ellen
Nemirow, move-in manager
at Vi at The Glen.
And the Racelises take
full advantage of the
space. “We just hosted a
party for the family on
Father’s Day,” Joan says.
“And everyone likes to
come for Sunday brunches
at the Vi.”
The first stress-free,
customizable move of your
life
At Vi at The Glen, residents
are given the freedom
to customize the finishes
and spaces of their
residences before they
move in, with the help
of the community’s Design
Center. “We added a
patio with manufactured
bluestone and a barbecue
area,” said Ray. “They
landscaped it beautifully!
We’re quite happy with it.”
As for the move-in process
itself, Vi has services
to help you downsize,
pack, unpack, arrange for
shipping and even organize
an estate sale. “We literally
sat back and watched people
Do you have enough savings for planned and unplanned expenses?
StatePoint Media
Nearly half of consumers have encountered
an emergency expense in the past
year, but when it comes to financially
preparing for the unexpected, many fall
short, according to CIT Bank’s new Summer
Savings Survey conducted by The
Harris Poll. What’s more, the survey also
found that many consumers don’t have
the savings to afford the planned expense
of the vacations they take.
“More than one in four consumers don’t
save anything for unexpected events such
as a home repair or health expense,” said
Ravi Kumar, head of Internet Banking for
CIT Bank. “Over another quarter report
saving less than 5 percent of their monthly
household income for emergencies.”
How are consumers making ends meet?
Family and credit cards top the list of resources
Americans rely on for financial
support during emergencies. As for the
planned expense of a vacation, approximately
one in three (29 percent) report taking
extreme actions to pay their way, including
taking out a bank loan, going into
debt, cleaning out a savings account, borrowing
money or maxing out a credit card.
“Americans can do more to ensure their
lifestyles and savings priorities are aligned,”
said Kumar. “But saving wisely is key.”
To plan the monthly amount that you’ll
need to save for peace of mind, utilize
free resources, such as CIT Bank’s online
calculators at www.bankoncit.com/calcu
lators. Then, consider looking for an account
that will make your savings work
harder and offer some flexibility. For
example, with a Money Market Account
from CIT Bank, consumers can earn interest
on their savings while maintaining
the option to make withdrawals at any
time. With no monthly maintenance fees,
a minimum account balance requirement,
and transaction capabilities, consumers
can save without sacrificing their earnings
throughout the process.
Do you have enough savings for
planned and unplanned expenses? When
it comes to happy occasions, like vacations,
as well as the unexpected, being
prepared can safeguard you against zeroing
out your account or going into debt.
How to get better care
StatePoint Media
from your doctor
Have you ever wanted to
ask your doctor a question
but didn’t because you felt
uncomfortable? Experts
say that an impersonal relationship
with your doctor
could be preventing
you from receiving the
best care possible.
“Your doctors should
feel like valued members
of your family — and you
a part of theirs. That’s how
I operate in my practice
and what I aim to foster in
my patients,” said Dr. Ken
Redcross, who brings nearly
20 years of experience to
his new book dealing with
this subject, “Bond: The 4
Cornerstones of a Lasting
and Caring Relationship
with Your Doctor.”
Whether you have a new
doctor or you’ve been at
the same practice for years,
your patient-doctor bond
may be on faulty ground.
But it doesn’t have to be,
suggests Dr. Redcross. He
believes that by establishing
these four essential
qualities in your patientdoctor
relationships, you’ll
pave the way to receiving
better care:
• Trust. Trust is essential in
any relationship, including
the one with your
doctor. There is no sharing
without trust, and
sharing is crucial when
it comes to receiving the
best possible care.
• Communication. No relationship
can be sustained
without open and honest
communication on both
sides, but developing
healthy communication
habits takes practice, effort
and willingness.
• Respect. Respect is treating
others with common
courtesy, good
social manners and appreciating
each other’s
humanity. This means
respecting each other’s
experience, knowledge
and time.
• Empathy. Empathy is the
ability to sense another
person’s emotions and
to be able to place yourself
in his or her shoes,
which is a valuable quality
in a doctor. However,
many physicians strive
for a state of “concerned
detachment,” which is
the opposite of empathy.
At the same time,
patients can be more
empathic, too, taking the
time to consider everything
their doctors may
be dealing with on the
day of their visit.
Building a great relationship
with your doctor
leads to practical benefits,
says Dr. Redcross. In dealings
with his own patients,
he finds that great communication
paves the way for
better treatment.
“Recently, a patient of
mine was dealing with
muscle pain and we had a
long conversation about
different options. Initially,
I recommended that she
take traditional pain reliever
with naproxen sodium
every morning. However,
by talking through all the
options and what best fit
her situation, including
her overall medical history,
preferences and more,
we settled on using Arnica
montana, a lower-risk
plant-based pain reliever
instead,” said Dr. Redcross.
“Feeling comfortable
enough with your doctor to
challenge a suggestion and
have a long and complete
conversation is key. Unfortunately,
such discussions
between patients and doctors
are rare.”
the book, as well as about
building better relationships
with your doctors,
visit, www.BondByDrRed
cross.com.
At a time when doctor’s
visits seem more routine
and formulaic than ever
before, experts say that
receiving individualized
care is possible, and it all
starts with building strong
relationships with your
health care providers.
Prediabetes and high
blood pressure can be
managed: What to know
StatePoint Media
Even as chronic diseases
like prediabetes and high
blood pressure touch more
and more Americans, physicians
are urging patients
to keep in mind that early
detection is key, and that
chronic disease can often
be managed with lifestyle
changes.
“To confront our increasing
chronic disease
burden, patients must be
aware of their risk for type
2 diabetes and hypertension,”
said Barbara L.
McAneny, M.D., president
of the American Medical
Association. “To prevent
both of these chronic diseases,
awareness and action
are key.”
As part of the effort to
empower Americans to
confront chronic disease,
the American Medical Association
offers the following
guidance.
Prediabetes
While prediabetes —
the precursor to type 2 diabetes
— has serious health
implications, people who
are at risk can take steps
to reverse the condition
and prevent or delay type
2 diabetes through lifestyle
changes like weight
loss, healthy eating and increased
physical activity.
Unfortunately, not everyone
is even aware they are
at risk. Eighty-four million
people in the U.S. are living
with prediabetes, and
of those that have it, 90
percent are unaware, according
to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
The American Medical
Association urges patients
to find out their risk by
taking a one-minute online
test at www.DoIHavePrediabetes.org.
In addition to
the risk test, the site contains
other resources and
links. Developed as part of
a first-of-its-kind joint national
prediabetes awareness
campaign launched
in 2016 by the American
Medical Association, Ad
Council, Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
and the American
Diabetes Association,
the campaign has helped
hundreds of thousands of
Americans learn their risk
of developing type 2 diabetes.
The campaign website
also features lifestyle
tips and links to Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention’s National Diabetes
Prevention Program,
which connects visitors to
a registry of CDC-recognized
programs across the
country.
Don’t let a vacation derail your diet
StatePoint Media
Vacation season is here
and it’s no surprise that
what you eat can have an
impact on your weight. In
a study from the University
of Georgia, 61 percent
of the participants gained
weight while on vacation,
with an average gain of 0.7
pounds. Some even gained
up to 7 pounds.
Making healthy choices,
even while on vacation,
can be as easy as one, two,
three when you have the
right tools. Courtney Mc-
Cormick, Corporate Dietitian
at Nutrisystem, shares
foods that should be on
your watch list and go-to
list, and how alcohol can
fit into your vacation and
weight loss plan – yes, you
read that right.
Foods on the Watch List
• Reduced-fat peanut butter:
There’s not a big
difference in calories
between reduced and
full-fat varieties. In fact,
full-fat peanut butter is
chock full of monounsaturated
fats, which are
good for your heart. You
can also look for natural
peanut butter, which
usually has less salt and
sugar.
• Multigrain bread: People
who eat whole grains are
at lower risk of certain
chronic diseases. But
read labels carefully.
While the term “whole
grain” is regulated,
“multigrain,” “7-grain,”
and “ancient grains” are
just marketing terms.
• Granola: Yes, granola
can deliver protein and
healthy fats, but eat it
sparingly. One cup can
have up to 600 calories
which is the same as
a Big Mac. And that’s
without milk.
• Sports drinks: Red-flag
number one: sugar is
high on the ingredients
list second only to water.
Red-flag number two:
there are two-and-a-half
servings in each bottle,
meaning you could be
gulping down as much
as 52.5 grams of sugar.
• Fast food salads: Some
fast food salads can
have more calories, fat
and sodium than burgers
because of add-ons like
cheese, meat and heavy
dressings.
Foods on the Go-To List
• Fruits and veggies: No
surprise here. Essential
to a healthy diet, pack
that cooler with them
for a healthful snacking
alternative.
• Nuts, seeds and popcorn:
Healthy fats like nuts
and seeds make great
snacks and crunchy salad
toppers. Walnuts may
be best when it comes
to cutting inflammation
and cholesterol. Just
watch your portions – a
little goes a long way.
And, plain air-popped
popcorn is a good alternative
to chips, delivering
fiber, vitamins and
minerals. Also, one cup
contains only around 30
calories.
• Protein: Think eggs,
chicken, lean steak, edamame,
quinoa or protein
shakes. Begin your day
with protein and you’ll
be off to a good start.
• Healthy sandwiches:
Ditch white bread and
rolls for whole grains
and sandwiches with
veggies and hummus instead
of cheese.
Room for Alcohol?
Participants of the University
of Georgia study
doubled their alcohol
consumption during vacations,
which contributed
to weight gain. However,
you don’t need to say no
to alcohol altogether, just
keep a few things in mind.
Watch the added sugar of
mixers and flavored liquors
and choose light
beers. Also, stick to drier
wines, such as Merlot and
Chardonnay, and opt for liquors
like gin, vodka, rum,
tequila, scotch and bourbon.
And finally, remember
to drink in moderation.
One drink per day for
women and two for men is
best while on vacation.
For more great tips, visit
Nutrisystem’s website,
The Leaf.
Remember, vacation
doesn’t need to hinder
your weight loss efforts.
Good choices can keep
you on the weight loss
track – on vacation and all
year round.
Want to quit smoking? How to find help
StatePoint Media
Quitting smoking is almost never
simple or easy, but according to the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, it’s one of the most important
steps you can take for your
health. Luckily, there are several
ways to get assistance to quit smoking.
Nearly 70 percent of smokers want
to quit and more than half will try
this year, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.
If you’re a smoker who’s ready to
quit, you can increase your chances
of success by talking to your doctor
about it, as well as leveraging free
resources.
The American Lung Association
suggests tobacco users who want to
quit should consult their doctor, who
can help them design a quit plan that
may include medication and counseling.
Keep in mind, these tobacco
cessation treatments are often covered
by insurance.
You can also download the free
Quitters Circle app from the Lung
Association and Pfizer to access tips
on how to quit smoking and help
guide you through your quitting
journey. It’s available at www.QuittersCircle.com.
For your health and the health of
those around you, quitting smoking
is one of the best things you can do.
Take steps to start your quit attempt
of heart attack and stroke,
more Americans should be
monitoring their blood pressure
levels and taking quick
action to get their high
blood pressure, also known
as hypertension, under control,”
said Dr. McAneny.
Unfortunately, there are
often no signs or symptoms
of high blood pressure,
which is why it is
often referred to as the
“silent killer.” If left untreated,
the condition damages
the blood vessels and
increases the risk for heart
attack, stroke and other serious
conditions.
To help understand and
manage your blood pressure
numbers, visit www.
LowerYourHBP.org, a site
launched by the American
Heart Association, American
Stroke Association,
and the American Medical
Association in partnership
with the Ad Council. The
site helps raise awareness
of the life-altering consequences
of uncontrolled
high blood pressure and
motivates people to work
with their doctors on developing
and committing
to a treatment plan.
By being proactive and
knowing your risks, you
can take control of your
health.

What everyone with disabilities should ask before accepting a job offer
StatePoint Media
October is National
Disability Employment
Awareness Month and a
good time to focus on the
issue of inclusion in the
workplace. With historically
low unemployment
rates among the general
population, those with
disabilities may enjoy
expanded opportunities,
particularly as more employers
discover the power
of a diverse workforce.
But finding the right job
fit is important, say experts.
“When those of us with
disabilities have a real
seat at the table, the innovations
we introduce
are beneficial to everyone,”
said Kathy Martinez,
head of Disability &
Accessibility Strategy at
Wells Fargo.
Wells Fargo is an example
of a company that
is committed to attracting,
hiring and supporting team
members with diverse
abilities. This includes
having a dedicated team of
diverse multi-disciplinary
professionals with expertise
in occupational health
and psychiatric nursing,
vocational rehabilitation,
behavioral/mental health,
ergonomics, disability
management, human resources,
employee relations,
benefits and leave
administration.
When looking for a job,
Martinez says that those
with disabilities should
ensure the company offers
a supportive environment
and will view an individual’s
experience as an asset
to the organization.
“Before accepting an
offer, ask the hiring manager
or human resources
contact what benefits and
programming are offered,”
suggests Martinez. “This
is an easy way to get a feel
for the company culture.”
To get the conversation
started, Martinez recommends
asking about the
following:
• Accommodations management
office. Is there
a dedicated staffer or
team working to ensure
that employees have the
tools and resources they
need to be successful?
Will this team be available
quickly to address
issues as they arise?
• Accessibility. Is the physical
workspace accessible
to you? Will technologies
or equipment you
need to perform your job
be usable?
• Employee resource group
(ERG). ERGs, such as
The Diverse Abilities
Team Member Network
at Wells Fargo, can provide
resources, opportunities
and camaraderie
to employees. Find out
if the company has such
a group for those with
disabilities.
• Leadership program/opportunity
for growth.
Will the job offer opportunities
for promotions
and raises? Are
there resources, such
