diagnosedeveryyear.Thisresultstoover8,000deathsevery<br />
year.WhilethissituationisnotrealyuniqueinIrelandalone,<br />
cancerisoneoftheprimarycausesalovertheworld,withthe<br />
numbersofindividualsbeingdiagnosedincreasingeachand<br />
everyyear.<br />
Despitethefactthatadvancementsarebeingmadeinthe<br />
areaofcancerresearchanddiagnosis,oneissuethatwilbe<br />
facedisthattheoptionsfortreatmentforacancerpatientis<br />
generalylimited.Thestructuredcancerresearchprogram plays<br />
a vitalrole in the education ofthe nextgeneration of<br />
researchers.Thenextbatchofstudentsgraduatingwilthen<br />
experienceanenhancedopportunitytocontributeintermsof<br />
improvingthedetection,preventionandcuresforcancer,while<br />
makingcanceradiseasethatismanageable.
ProjectGoal<br />
This purpose ofthis research is to educate the next<br />
generationofresearchersbyprovidingsupportto5students<br />
whoareundertakingtheir<strong>PhD</strong>incancerresearch.Theywilbe<br />
supervised and supported by a multi-disciplinary team of<br />
pharmacists,medicaldoctors,pharmacologists,aswelas<br />
pharmaceuticalandmedicinalchemists.<br />
Thestudentsaregiventheopportunitytohavethreetosix<br />
monthsexperienceinthelaboratoriesofcolaborators,making<br />
surethattheyhaveadeepunderstandingonmultidisciplinary<br />
clinical,academicandindustrycancerresearch.Atthesame<br />
time,thelaboratoriesarealsoprogressingtowardsthecreation<br />
ofanti-cancerdrugsfortheinterestofcancerpatients.<br />
Forthisparticularproject,wewillookintothepathological<br />
activated functions and phenotype of cancer-associated<br />
fibroblasts(CAFs)inbreasttumorscomingfrom murinemodels<br />
aswelashumanpatientsinordertodeterminestrategiesthat<br />
wiltargetthem indeteringtumorprogression,alongwith<br />
metastaticdissemination.
Significance<br />
DespitetheimportanceoftherolethatCAFsplayinbreast<br />
cancer,themechanismsthatregulatethemaintenanceand<br />
emergenceofpathologicalyactivatedstatusoftheCAFs,as<br />
welastheirparticularroleininfluencingtheprogressionof<br />
breastcancerarenotunderstoodwel.Thisresearchwilfurther<br />
improve our understanding behind the fundamental<br />
mechanismsthatunderliecancerbiology,leadingtothedesign<br />
and deliveryofefective and innovative strategiesforthe<br />
prevention,diagnosisandtreatmentofcancer.<br />
