Side Trips 

Our family enjoyed a few days of 

sunshine in Arizona last week. Temperatures 

were in the low 80s three 

of the days we were there, which felt ideal 

for hiking, hanging by 

the pool and playing 

pickle ball. 

Golf didn’t fit our 

schedule very well, 

and since our son is 

the only one in the 

family that really 

enjoys the game, we 

didn’t make that a priority. 

What we did find 

time for though was a 

visit to an indoor driving 

range, Top Golf. 

Anyone into sports 

and technology will find the place fascinating, 

as each golf ball contains a chip and 

the green contains targets that you drive 

toward. Data is sent back to the computer 

monitor in your bay, with real-time distance 

and accuracy displayed. 

I enjoyed watching and cheering for everyone 

else, with no desire to swing a club. 

They persisted and finally convinced me to 

give it a shot. 

I didn’t know how to stand, which club to 

select or the proper way to swing. I whiffed 

the first two attempts before my son 

stepped in to show me how to intertwine 

my fingers and grip the club. 

Of course everyone chimed in with “keep 

your eye on the ball,” which I find to be ridiculous 

advice. Whether batting or swinging, 

I’ve always “kept my eye on the ball” 

with little success. I can’t keep an eye on the 

ball AND on the club or the bat. How can 

you have hand-eye coordination when you 

can only see one of the required elements at 

a time? 

Anyway, I eventually connected with the 

ball, though it didn’t travel far. Mercifully, 

my family didn’t insist that I take another 

turn and I returned to my seat, cheering the 

rest of them on and enjoying a beautiful 

Arizona evening.

Nature Center offers bird 

trek, nature hike 

The theme of 

the hike will be

spring. Looking for 

emerging tree 

buds, migrating 

birds returning 

for the year. 

Despite the recent snowfall and 

chilly temperatures, spring is 

indeed around the corner. 

And the Dickinson County Nature 

Center is inviting you to look for 

some signs of spring in their upcoming 

programs. 

They’ll be looking for signs in the 

sky and on the ground. On their first 

Bird Trek event of the year at 9 a.m. 

on Saturday, March 31, the group will 

meet at the nature center and caravan 

to various birding sites around the 

county. Earlier that week, nature lovers 

will be getting outdoors with the 

month’s Hike the Wild at Lower Gar 

State Recreational Area. 

The hike will take place on Tuesday, 

March 27, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. 

Each Hike the Wild event has a 

theme and this month’s is all about 

spring. 

“The theme of the hike will be looking 

for signs of spring. Looking for 

emerging tree buds, migrating birds 

returning for the year,” said Bryanna 

Kuhlman, the environmental education 

coordinator at the nature center. 

“[Naturalist] Ashley Hansen and myself 

have not taken a hike there before. 

We hope to see signs of spring and 

enjoy the morning.” 

Then later that week, there will be 

even more nature lovers looking for 

signs of spring in the skies. 

Local birding enthusiast Lee Schoenewe 

will be leading the Bird Trek on 

March 31 and they are hoping to see 

some spring birds. 

“The waterfowl migration will be 

underway in early spring and we will 

be exploring the open water areas 

in marshes and lakes of Dickinson 

County,” Schoenewe said. 

While the group tends to travel 

around the county on the hunt for 

good bird watching spots, Schoenewe 

says that they’ll likely head to Spirit 

Lake as it is a natural magnet for water 

birds. 

And water birds are what they’ll be 

on the hunt to find. 

“Ducks and geese will be plentiful 

and we could see 20 or more different 

species. Diving ducks such as canvasback 

will be using the deeper water 

of lakes and dabbling ducks such as 

mallard and northern pintail will 

be found in shallower marshes and 

sloughs. Besides Canada geese there 

are four other goose species we could 

see that all migrate further north 

than Iowa to breed,” Schoenewe said. 

“Trumpeter swans are regular now 

in the area having been reintroduced 

and are always a treat to see. In addition, 

loons, grebes, cormorants, gulls 

and terns should be coming back as 

well.” 

There’s a lot to enjoy about birding 

and Schoenewe says that this Bird 

Trek could have some fascinating 

sights to see. 

“People enjoy birds at many different 

levels and getting out into the 

field especially during the migration 

can be an exhilarating experience. A 

single flock of snow geese could number 

over 10,000! Plus the male ducks 

will be in full breeding plumage and 

quite handsome,” Schoenewe said. 

“If we see hooded merganser males 

displaying for a female people will be 

very impressed with seeing courtship 

behavior.” F

Pearson presents work from Dickinson

Artwork by sixth-eighth grade students fills the Goodenow Gallery on the 

lower level of the Pearson Lakes Art Center. The Dickinson County All

Students have taken over the Pearson 

Lakes Art Center. 

Specifically, each gallery is now 

filled with the work of K-12 students 

in each of Dickinson County’s four 

school districts. 

The Dickinson County All School 

show is on display now through April 

21 at the PLAC in Okoboji. 

Students from Okoboji, Harris-Lake 

Park, Spirit Lake, and Graettinger- 

Terril school districts are divided into 

four categories. Kindergarten through 

second grade is on display in the McIlrath 

Landing Gallery, third-fifth-graders 

are in the Weaver Lobby Gallery, 

sixth-eighth grade in the Goodenow 

Gallery, and high school students in 

the Monte Pearson Gallery. 

“This is our best attended reception 

by far in the entire exhibit season,” 

said Danielle Clouse Gast, visual arts 

director at the art center. “I would 

probably say it is our largest attended 

event aside from Art in the Park, 

bringing in thousands over the duration 

of its time in the gallery.” 

Teacher are allowed to select 20 

pieces for each category, amounting to 

320 works of art for the whole show. 

“It’s a big deal for students to be 

selected for exhibit in the first place 

by their teacher,” Clouse Gast said. 

“Teachers can see a sense of composition 

or technique executed very 

well. It’s not always about how wellportrayed 

something is, but how well 

the piece works as a piece of art. Many 

of these I could frame up and hang on 

my own wall.” 

Clouse Gast describes it as “icing on 

the cake” then that the students get to 

have their work judged once it gets to 

the gallery walls. 

A lecturer from Iowa State University 

in Ames spent an entire day judging 

the work at all grade levels. 

Ribbons were given to each student 

in the show, as well as honorable 

mentions and judge’s choice ribbons 

in each category, and an overall “best 

in show” ribbon. The awards ceremony 

was held Saturday, March 17, in the 

Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre.

show for several years.

Gast said. “I always start with K-2. There’s 

something about the spontaneity and 

freshness of the work that makes me 

excited to pull out the next piece and the 

next piece. There’s something joyful in 

making marks and putting down paint 

and colors on paper. They’re very proud 

of what they’re doing and that can be 

said for all the age groups.” 

For Clouse Gast some of the names 

have become familiar over the years. 

Some of names attached to the K-2 

ribbons she’s handed out in the past are 

now in the show as high school students. 

“Some of them really go for it. By the 

time you’re in art classes in high school 

you’re invested in it,” Clouse Gast said. 

In some ways the show then is also a 

reflection of the teachers. 

“This showcases student work obviously 

but is also a major showcase for 

what we have happening in the county 

in arts education,” Clouse Gast said. 

“Putting their work in a gallery setting 

it elevates it, not only for the students, 

but for the parents and teachers as well. 

For many students this is their basketball 

court, their theater stage, their football 

field, where they get to show what they 

do for everyone to see.” F

Milford Library hosts educational 

session on D’ing Darling 

Learning about historical figures is something 

that can easily be done at the library. 

That information is usually only 

found in the books, but at the Milford Memorial 

Library on Thursday, April 5 at 2 p.m., one of 

those historical figures will be jumping right off 

the page and into real life. 

Tom Milligan, an actor, will be portraying 

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and legendary 

conservationist Jay N. “Ding” Darling. 

“The Art of Conservation: A Visit with Ding 

Darling” is a free hour-long presentation in 

which Darling visits with the audience in his 

11th floor office at The Des Moines Register. 

“My presentation is a scripted 50-minute visit 

with me as Ding. I walk on as Ding, do my thing 

and walk off. After the presentation I do come 

back and do Q&A as Tom talking about the 

show and Ding. I travel with a small set that represents 

Ding’s office with props to include four 

images that he talks about in the presentation,” 

said Milligan. 

Ding Darling was an Iowa native who became 

a voice for conservation nationwide. 

“Ding Darling was a two-time Pulitzer Prizewinning 

editorial cartoonist for The Des Moines 

Register. Over his four decades in that position 

he created more than 6,300 cartoons for the 

Register. The subject of many of his cartoons was 

conservation and wildlife as well as protecting 

our natural resources,” Milligan said. “He grew 

up in Sioux City and was a avid outdoorsman. 

Because of his concerns about conservation he 

became a nationally known figure in the conservation 

movement of the early 1900s.” 

“He was the first commissioner for the Iowa 

State Fish and Game Commission, appointed 

by FDR to be head of the U.S. Biological Service, 

which is now called the U.S. Fish and Wildlife 

Service, founded and ran the National Wildlife 

Federation as well as starting the Duck Stamp 

program for wildlife funding. Needless to say he

was a major player in the modern conservation 

movement, all while continuing to work and 

live in Iowa.” 

Milligan put the show together after being approached 

in 2016 by Humanities Iowa and the 

Iowa Department of Natural Resources. 

“I had a history with HI and one of the things 

I do as an actor of 45 years is specialize in one 

person presentations. I’ve been portraying Grant 

Wood for over 20 years and Henry A. Wallace, 

founder of Pioneer International, for 18 years as 

well. So this kind of portrayal was right up my 

alley,” Milligan said. “I had actually been thinking 

about Ding as a character for a while so it 

was a great fit.” 

Milligan is always excited about having the 

chance to open up the public’s minds about 

these famous Iowans about whom many people 

don’t actually know that much. 

“To me the best part of this as well as the others 

that I do is the information I include that 

people don’t know about,” Milligan said. “These 

are all relatively well known Iowans by name 

but most people don’t know that much about 

them. I’ve found this approach is a wonderful 

way to teach history.” F
