Club Sapien officially opened its
doors in August of 2010. The
Club was owned by Mike Gray
and a silent partner. As you may
have guessed, the name of the
club was a play on the word
homosapien.
At the time, Sapien was one of
Calgary’s newest gay bars. The
venue was spacious and had a
decent sized stage for a variety
of performances.
Sapien became home to the
Fake Mustache drag troupe
after the closures of the Soda
Lounge and the Eagle. This was
short lived as the venue closed
its doors in 2012.

community in Calgary,
but more than that it was
an introduction to the
world of drag. That bar
felt like a second home
to me as I explored my
gender identity on stage.
It represents such an
important part of my life
and I was terribly sad to
see it close.”
