April 2018
Dear Broward Coalition Members,
Spring is finally here in South Florida. Well,
kinda. This winter has extended it self a
little longer then we liked it to. Spring is a
hopeful new season! It brings
transformation and change, it brings new
growth in gardens, new life, new beginnings,
and new bright colors to our communities.
Spring usually means our Community Pools
will start being used regularly. When we go
swimming, we may be unaware of the
potential dangers inside our pools or spas.
Just recently in Sarasota County there was
an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease at a
Community Pool in North Port. 11 people
were taken to area hospitals and treated for
symptoms of Legionnaires' disease.
According to the CDC, Legionella is very
common in large water distribution systems
such as swimming pools. Pools have low
flow mechanisms which are conducive to
the development of the legionella bacteria.
Additionally, the bacteria reproduces in
warm water of temperatures, stagnant
water and swimming pools and hot
tubs with poor water flow.
Let's protect our Communities by making
sure that our vendors responsible for our
Community pools are performing
maintenance on them regularly. That they
check the disinfectant and Ph levels more
often during the busiest times of use.
Warmest Regards,
