The Genescene COMMUNITY NEWS CLUBS Genesee Hikers Kick-off Meeting Thursday, April 12 at 0930am, Vista Clubhouse The Genesee Hikers is an all-volunteer participatory group. Our hiking season begins in May and continues into the fall, ending in late October. We hike every Thursday during the season. Hikes are selected by members of the group and vary in difficulty. Members are free to participate in all or in as few hikes as they wish. Costs: This is a participatory group. Instead of paying dues, you are expected to contribute to the group by leading or co-leading a hike or hosting a special event (party) at least every other year. We will meet at the parking lot next to the Genesee Fire Department at 6pm and carpool to Luna’s Mexican Restaurant, 5350 W. 64th Ave. Arvada Skate City, 5353 W. 64th Ave., opens at 8pm and is across the street from Luna’s. The skiing and snowshoeing were pretty good to great and we had a timely snowfall for the overnight trip to Sunlight Mountain Resort in late February. This winter our group covered a wide range of trails and locations from Ward to near Leadville. Thanks to all the trip coordinators and volunteers for scouting and leading. We are now looking forward to the end-of- season social (we like to party). Be sure to join us next year, January to the end of <strong>March</strong>, on Colorado’s mountain trails. Last year we met at 8:30am on the second Saturday of each month. We had a nice turnout, and some very interesting cars at each meet but would like to get even more cars and owners. Mt. Vernon Country Club Rd. Adults 18 and over can participate and get many free or low-cost health services such as a blood pressure check and blood count screenings. You can register for the screenings you want when you come to the Fair, or you can avoid long lines and pre-register by visiting the 9HealthFair website: www.9Healthfair.org/register. Our fair can be found under Rockland Community Church sponsored by Highland Rescue Team. Just print a copy of your completed forms and bring them with you on Fair day. Jan Keating 303.526.1235 Genesee Fire Protection District to Request a Small Mill Levy Increase The Genesee Fire Protection District (GFPD) is asking District voters to approve their request for an increase of 1.5 mills, from 8.00 to 9.50 mills, in a May 8 special election. The new mill levy rate would enable the District to maintain the projected annual revenues they earn from property taxes by offsetting the state-law-mandated reduction in the residential property tax rate that occurred this year. It will also ensure that the District has adequate reserve funds. Without the increase GFPD’s revenues will continue to be 9.55% less than projected, significantly affecting their annual budget which funds operations, capital expense for new equipment, and training. Over 90% of GFPD revenue is earned directly from property taxes. • The ballot measure will also allow GFPD to adjust the mill levy rate, if necessary, to offset further reductions of GFPD’s revenue if State law mandates future decreases in the residential property tax rate. What this means for you: • The 1.5 mill increase means a $10.80 annual increase/$100,000 actual property value in 2019. • The new mill levy of 9.5 means that you would pay $68.40 annually/$100,000 actual value in 2019. • In subsequent years, you would not pay more per $100,000 actual value than you did in 2019, even if the mill levy is adjusted to compensate for future State law-mandated decreases in the residential property tax rate. By allowing this adjustment, GFPD can assure voters that, barring an extraordinary circumstance, it will not ask voters for additional funding for at least 10 years. What this means for GFPD: • GFPD can continue to be the professional, well-equipped and well-trained team on which their communities (1500 homes and 36 commercial properties) rely on for protection and emergency services by ensuring sufficient revenues and reserve funds for operations and capital expense. • The increase will help to offset GFPD’s 2018 revenue reduction from $63.68 in 2017 to $57.76/$100,000 actual residential value. We, as taxpayers, accrue great benefit from having a welltrained, dedicated group of volunteers and career staff (currently 32 volunteers and 2 career staff). Ballots will be mailed April 16 and must be returned to the fire station at 23455 Currant Drive, by mail or drop-off, by May 8. You are invited to attend neighborhood forums on April 12 and May 1 at 6:30pm at the fire station, where you can learn more and have your questions answered.
