LAURA RENWICK was out
of luck in the grand prix, just
brushing the top pole off an

her Olympia puissance winner
Top Dollar VI leaned hard on
her inside rein and lost a little
balance to the fence. But the
British national anthem sounded
out when she took the Glock’s
youngster tour final for sevenand
eight-year-olds on Sunday
morning with Sharon and Lara
Whiteway’s Novita Jovial Z.
Laura has been riding the
talented seven-year-old chestnut
mare for only six weeks, but
Sharon originally bought her from
the Renwicks as a three-year-old.
“She felt really good from the
first fence onwards today,” said
Laura, who rode some brave lines
in the jump-off. “Even though
she’s big, she’s quick, agile and
athletic. Nothing seems to faze
her; she’s adaptable, rideable
and has a good brain — she’s
almost an old head on young
shoulders and just needs to
mature physically. She has all
the attributes to be a top horse.”
Ireland’s Michael Duffy won
Gaston Glock’s Championat, a
1.50m class on Friday by being the
only the rider to take an incredibly
tight turn after the first fence in
the jump-off. He rode the 10-yearold
Livello gelding Lapuccino 2,
a rangey, scopey roan.
Michael, 21, works for Carl
Hanley near Osnabrück in northwest
Germany, and Lapuccino 2
was bred by Carl’s wife, Nadja,
and produced by Eoin McMahon.
“He’s a bit ‘special’ — he will
only come off the lorry in reverse,
that sort of thing — but he’s sweet
and intelligent and I really enjoy
working with him,” said Michael.
“He’s super-careful but has plenty
of blood so is also fast, so I could
ride tight lines but keep galloping.
He’s still green at the highest level,
but he has the ability to jump
anything; we just have to take our
time with him.”
Second was another exciting
young rider, the Netherlands’
Sanne Thijssen, with the grey
Crusador mare Celine M Z. Sanne,
19, took a young horse class on
Thursday with Dior P Z, and
impressed throughout the show
with her light, balanced riding.
Saturday’s 1.55m class
went to Belgium’s Christophe
Vanderhasselt and the 10-yearold
Air Jordan Z mare Identity
Vitseroel. There were only three
clears in the first round over
a track that seemed even stronger
than Sunday’s grand prix.
“The course-designer here
[Franz Mandl] doesn’t take any
prisoners,” commented Laura.
“The last line — the treble to
the oxer — was really tough for
a three-star show.” H&H

THE Glock Performance Horse Center, nestled in
the snow-covered Alps in southern Austria, hosts
a CSI3* in February and a CSI5* in June. Facilities
for horses and humans are almost unprecedented
in equestrian sport.
The Riders’ Lounge at Glock’s takes hospitality to
a completely different level in terms of luxury and
glamour. Famous chefs produce superb food round
the clock; professional stylists and beauticians
are on hand — and even dogs can enjoy their own
“wellness lounge” with massages and bespoke meals.
Thousands of orchids and other hothouse flowers
decorate every inch of the temporary structure.
Each night Gaston and Kathrin Glock host a private
party for riders, owners and guests — which include
Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, John Travolta and Hugh

“It’s unbelievable — and the organisers pay as
much attention to the comfort of the horses as they
do to the riders,” says Laura Renwick, who is a regular
visitor to the show.
