AN OVERVIEW 

Yeshiva Toras Chaim is centrally located in the Romema neighborhood of 

Yerushalayim. It is named after the esteemed Rav of Antwerp, Belgium, Maran 

HaGaon R’ Chaim Kreiswirth k"eumz. He left a legacy that lives on through the 

establishment of the Yeshiva by his son, the vchahv atr, HaRav HaGaon R' Dov 

Kreiswirth t"yhka and his grandson, the hbjur kvbn, HaRav Zvi Twersky t"yhka. 

Just under three years ago, Toras Chaim became a reality. The first step was to 

find a suitable building. An empty shell of a building in the heart of Yerushalayim 

that had been unoccupied for many years was located with great thnas t,ghhx. It was 

then turned in to a state of the art facility designed specifically for the Yeshiva’s 

needs virtually overnight with the help and support of two tireless individuals, 

Reb Shloime Bronner and Reb Ephraim Kutner. A dream was turned in to an 

imaginable reality. 

Once the building was secured, the next step was to find Talmidim. The Rebbeim 

intended to start the Yeshiva with a group of thirty to forty Bochurim. Word 

spread quickly and with tremendous thnas t,ghhx, ninety-five ohshnk, enrolled in the 

first year and the Yeshiva has grown to nearly two hundred ohshnk, in its third year. 

Indeed, the dream and vision of vru, learning combined with personal growth has 

become a reality. 

Yeshiva Toras Chaim exemplifies the outlook and approach of Rav Chaim 

Kreiswirth k"eumz, combining high levels of learning with exceptionally dedicated 

and dynamic rugha hshdn in an atmosphere that exudes warmth and tremendous 

ohhjv ,jna. Special emphasis is placed on improving one’s ,ushn, becoming whkg hbc 

and developing into vru, hbc. The Yeshiva’s building and facilities promote feelings 

of vru,v sucf in a nurturing environment. One of the hallmarks of Yeshiva Toras 

Chaim is sparing no effort when it comes to creating the right environment for 

our talmidim’s spiritual growth.





The Rosh HaYeshiva, HaRav HaGaon R' Dov Kreiswirth t"yhka, is a talmid of 

HaGaon Rav Moshe Shmuel Shapiro k"mz, Rosh Yeshiva Beer Yaakov, HaGaon Rav 

Shmuel Rozovsky k"mz, Rosh Yeshiva Ponovitch, and HaGaon Rav Berel Soloveitchik 

k"mz, Rosh Yeshiva Brisk. He has combined the Torah and ,ushn of these great Torah 

leaders of the previous generation with the vruxn that he received from his father, 

the Antwerp Rav k"mz. 

HaRav Zvi Twersky t"yhka, the Menahel Ruchani, enjoyed a close relationship with 

his grandfather, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kreiswirth k"mz, who helped formulate 

his approach to empowering ohshnk, and bringing out the best of their individual 

kochos. He is known for his warmth and seemingly unlimited time devoted to his 

ohshnk,. 

The staff of maggidei shiurim is legendary. They include HaRav Elimelech Reznick 

t"yhka, a famed maggid shiur in the Mir Yeshiva, who gives the highest level shiur. 

HaRav Yosef Katz t"yhka is the mashgiach. His creative and innovative vaadim 

set the tone for the atmosphere of growth in the Yeshiva. All of the Rebbeim have 

extensive experience, collectively teaching hundreds of today’s bochurim with a 

level of dedication specifically focused on the needs of today’s talmidim.

AN INTERGENERATIONAL BRIDGE 

Every day in vrag vbuna we pray that Hashem extend His mercy ohshxjv kgu ohehsmv kg 

ovhrpux ,hc ,yhkp kgu ktrah ,hc lng ,hrta hbez kgu. While we know who the first three groups 

are, the identity of the last one (ovhrpux ,hc ,yhkp – the remnant of the scholars) is a 

bit enigmatic. Who are these remnants on whose behalf we implore Hashem? 

The key to our survival as a Torah Nation is the unbroken chain of vruxn from hbhx. 

While every generation has its saints and scholars they alone do not guarantee 

true Jewish continuity. We must have people who serve as bridge figures linking 

us with our glorious past. In every generation ktrah kkf had great men who lived 

in an earlier time and served as the remnant of scholars helping us imbibe the 

glorious spiritual heritage with its authentic Jewish esthetic and values, into our 

bones. 

For our generation Rav Kreiswirth k"eumz was ovhrpux ,hc ,yhkp – the remnant of 

the scholars. He lived for ktrah kkf and served as a bridge for young and old alike 

linking them to the spiritual wealth and existential Toras Chaim of his youth and 

milieu. With his encyclopedic knowledge of Torah and his sense of responsibility 

for ktrah kkf he was a larger than life model of how one could view life and live life 

through the prism of Torah, developing pristine princely ,ushn and true ktrah ,cvt 

and ohna ,trh. He lit up the world with his ohhj ,ru, and his sxj ,cvt and by his very 

essence called on us to pursue ever-expanding horizons of Torahdik growth and 

greatness. 

It is this legacy that we celebrate tonight with a heartfelt vkhp, that we at Toras 

Chaim loyally convey his vision to each and every one of our beloved ohshnk,.

My father’s holistic vision, cultivated by his great Rebbeim in the legendary 

Yeshivas of pre-war Europe, set his personal example of a synthesis of ohna ,trh, 

vru,, sterling ,ushnוand a heart overflowing with love for all Yidden. These 

attributes guide us daily in our understanding and approach in producing vru, hbc 

who are whkg hbc. It is our vkhp, that our efforts be continuously blessed with vjkmv and

Among the many supporters that the Yeshiva has, I would like to express my 

heartfelt cuyv ,rfv to two individuals who stepped forward at the Yeshiva’s 

inception and provided professional and financial assistance that helped get us 

off the ground and literally into a building. R’ Shlomo Bronner, whose familial 

relationship with the Kreiswirth family goes back several generations. Upon 

hearing about our dream of opening a Yeshiva, he immediately got to work, 

locating, constructing and preparing our beautiful state of the art Yeshiva facility. 

It is unimaginable where we would be without him. R’ Ephraim Kuttner is 

another special individual who volunteered his services to help fund the Yeshiva 

at its inception. His greatest concern was and continues to be that the Yeshiva 

focus on lubhj, while he expends his ,ujuf on the financial aspects of running and 

maintaining a world-class Yeshiva institution.

of rst because we remember the ohxhbיthat Hashem 

performed for ktrah kkf in the past on ohrup and jxp. 

The vjna that a Yid feels is not a transient 

superficial feeling. It is a deep feeling of 

acknowledgement for Hashem’s connection 

with Him, which – in the case of ohrupפand jxp – was demonstrated by Hashem’s 

miraculous salvation of ktrah kkf. There is no greater happiness for an individual 

Yid than the knowledge that Hashem cares for him. 

oav lurc in the past three years since the formation of the Yeshiva, we have been 

vfuz to see Hashem’s care for us. Step by step, he has held our hands and brought 

our dream to fruition – so that today we could proudly proclaim vkhdb uk ubhue ouhv vz

This thnas t,ghhx is a sucfכto our visionary grandfather, Harav Hagaon R’ Chaim 

Kreiswirth k"mz, whose ideals the Yeshiva is striving to embody. We saw his deep 

“iumr” to bring the lrsדof the pre-war vru,v okugעto the post-war generation, and were 

inspired to continue with his work. We believe our success is due, in a large 

measure, to his ,ufz. 

Although, ultimately, our success is dependent on v"cev, this does not diminish our 

appreciation for those individuals who contribute greatly to our efforts – becoming 

Hashem’s representatives in this great endeavor: 

First, we need to thank those individuals who from the outset of this endeavor 

and to this day help in practical ways turn our dream into a reality. These are 

individuals who have selflessly devoted their time and resources to the formation, 

growth and continued success of the Yeshiva. They have concerned themselves 

at great expense with the most mundane and basic aspects of organizing and 

managing the Yeshiva and have been crucial to its success. Among these 

individuals, two stand out and need to be recognized; they are R’ Sholmo Bronner 

and R’ Ephraim Kutner. These individuals stood up to carry the burdens and 

responsibilities associated with establishing and managing the Yeshiva when 

those burdens and responsibilities seemed overwhelming.





R’ Shlomo Bronner was instrumental in setting the very foundations of the 

Yeshiva through his efforts to organize the Yeshiva from a dream that seemed 

impossible to its present reality. Those efforts included obtaining the appropriate 

professional assistance necessary for forming and funding the Yeshiva, locating 

its building and negotiating the terms of its construction and use, identifying and 

meeting candidates for key staff positions, formulating institutional processes 

and procedures, managing the Yeshiva’s design, construction and furnishing, 

managing its financial and legal affairs, and contributing and assisting in 

obtaining from others the resources needed to achieve those ends. 

R’ Ephraim Kutner offered his financial support for the founding of the Yeshiva 

as soon as he became aware of our goal. That support provided us with the 

confidence to move forward with our plans to establish the Yeshiva as we knew 

that R’ Ephraim would be there to support our goals and aspirations in very 

concrete ways. That incredibly generous support has substantially grown over 

these past several years but also as importantly, has the time and energy R’ 

Ephraim has devoted in encouraging others to provide the funding necessary 

for the Yeshiva’s success. This assistance allowed us to focus our efforts on 

educating our Talmidim which is what R’ Ephraim insisted upon as he did his 

part. These efforts have culminated in the success of this year’s Inaugural Dinner 

achieved by R’ Ephraim through his role as Dinner Chairman. 

We the Hanhalas HaYeshiva, Rabbeim, Meishivim, Talmidim and families of our 

Talmidim are greatly indebted to R’ Bronner and R’ Kutner for their efforts on our 

behalf. May Hashem grant them the strength and resources to continue with their 

Avodos Hakodesh and may they have continued vfrc and vjkmv and much ,jb from 

their families. 

Next, we need to recognize and thank our dedicated staff of Rebbeim and 

Meishivim whose self-sacrifice is impossible to describe and can only be measured 

by the tremendous success of the Bochurim. Their achievements are obvious to 

all and are at the core of the Yeshiva’s success. 

From among the staff, Rabbi Chanina Geisler t"yhka – this year’s honoree – 

deserves special mention. Rav Chanina is an example of the level of dedication 

and commitment that a Rebbi should have for his ohshnk,. Once again, words are 

inadequate to truly describe this phenomenon. Only one who is familiar with the 

number of ohshnk, that Rabbi Geisler has positively impacted, the length of time 

throughout which his connection with them continues to grow, and the magnitude 

of his effect on them, can begin to understand what we see in our dear colleague,





Rav Chanina. May Hashem grant him and his family lrutk ,jb curu ;udvu apbv ,uthrc

In our mention of all those who were instrumental in the establishment of the 

Yeshiva, we must acknowledge the role that my father, HaRav Shlomo Shmuel 

Twersky k"mz served. Although he managed to remain behind the scenes, he was 

an integral force behind the entire process – from the initial dream until its 

ultimate realization. Initially, he was a source of encouragement and support 

which enabled us to move forward with our plans. Later on, he was always ready 

to recognize the accomplishments of others, inspiring us all to strive to reach 

new heights. All this was done with his warm smile and kind demeanor which is 

missed by us all. At this year’s Dinner, a Tomchei Torah fund will be established 

in his memory to provide much needed support for the Rebbeim and Talmidei 

HaYeshiva. 

We must also thank the parents of Yeshiva Toras Chaim Talmidim who, aside from 

entrusting their children to us, also stand by our side in our efforts to care for 

their children. We count on them to help impart the values which are so important 

to us all and their continued support in this and many other ways.

I would like to welcome each and every one of you 

here tonight to the First Annual Yeshiva Toras 

Chaim Dinner. It has been extremely gratifying 

to see the support that this wonderful Yeshiva 

inspires. Thank you all from the bottom of my 

heart. 

This Dinner and journal are such warm expressions of the appreciation 

and devotion we all feel towards Toras Chaim. We have all been fortunate 

to experience the radiant celebration of each individual, Torah life and true 

happiness that emanates from the Yeshiva. My definition of chinuch has always 

been teaching by example. This world class hanhala are such fantastic role models 

for our children and families. I know how much my family has grown and learned 

from these amazing examples of true bnei Torah. 

This Dinner and these pages celebrate all that Toras Chaim means to us. The 

message tonight from the Hanhala will inspire all of us iy"H and allow us all 

to have a closer glimpse into the workings of the Yeshiva. The varied ways the 

Yeshiva nurtures its talmidim to grow will fill you with pride.

CHAIM SHEL TORAH AWARD 

HaRav Chanina Geisler t"yhka, son of the famed educator HaRav Nosson Geisler 

t"yhka was born in Brooklyn, New York. He moved along with his family to ktrah .rt 

as a teenager and learned in vru, kue ,chah and rhn ,chah. He was a talmid of HaGaon 

Harav Moshe Shapiro k"eumz and had a close rae with the Posek HaDor HaGaon 

Harav Elyashiv k"eumz. 

His khj ,at is a granddaughter of the Ponovitch Rosh HaYeshiva HaGaon HaRav 

Dovid Povarsky k"eumz and stands behind his amazing achievements. He currently 

resides in Har Nof with his wife and eight children v"gc. 

He joined the kkuf in vru,v zfrn ,chah and eventually taught talmidim there for close 

to twenty years. He was one of the founding Rebbeim in ohhj ,ru, as a first year rugha 

shdn, combining high level learning with an emphasis on ohna ,trh and ,ucuy ,usn as 

well. His hallmark as a Rebbi is a tremendous devotion to each and every talmid. 

His ability to see deeply into a bochur’s real potential and bring out his kochos is 

legendary.

EITZ CHAIM MEMORIAL TRIBUTE 

Rav Shlomo Shmuel Twersky k"mz was a caring 

person who always tried to understand and assist with the needs of each and 

every individual. He personified care and compassion for others. He had a unique 

ability to encourage his children, family members and friends, to accomplish and 

perform to the best of their abilities. Many times, the people on the receiving end 

didn’t even realize their potential until they were pushed by him to develop that 

potential. He always made others feel welcome and wanted. His home was open 

to anyone in need of practical, emotional, medical, occupational and religious 

support and guidance. 

“Reb Shlomo,” as he was affectionately called by friends and acquaintances, was 

the only son of the Chernobler Rebbe, Harav Yaakov Yisroel Twersky k"eumz. He was 

born into a family endowed with an illustrious Chassidic history. He was a ic 

ic rjt descendant of the first Chernobler Rebbe, the “Meor Einayim,” who was a 

talmid of the Baal Shem Tov and the Mezritcher Maggid. Reb Shlomo was also a 

descendent of the Baal Shem Tov, Reb Aharon of Karlin, the Apta Rav, Reb Yaavo, 

The Zlotchover Maggid, Reb Pinchos of Koritz and the Rebbes of Neschchiz, Radvil 

and Orzistchov v"vkkeumz. He was scfn his parents tremendously and aspired to live 

up to their legacy and his Chernobler ancestry. He would always talk about the 

Chernobler Rebbes’ impact on his life as he showed their pictures to visitors to his 

home and described the values and virtues that they espoused. 

Reb Shlomo’s namesake, his grandfather, R’ Shlomo Shmuel escaped from the 

severe communist oppression that he faced in the Soviet Union and established 

the Chernobler shul in the confines of Boro Park, Brooklyn, in the 1930’s. 

Unfortunately, his sojourn in America was short lived as he was niftar a short 

while later. In the meantime, Reb Shlomo’s father, Rav Yaakov Yisroel, also 

succeeded in independently escaping to Eretz Yisroel and was brought to America





to be ouen tknn his father after his father’s vrhyp. His name was associated with ,khnd 

ohsxj and his address was well known throughout the world as a place of ohjrut ,xbfv. 

Many people would come to “visit” the Chernobler Shtieble and stay for weeks, 

months or years. The Chernobler Rebbe felt the responsibility for maintaining, 

preserving and transmitting the Chassidishe vruxn and ohdvbn in the pre- and 

post-war years in Boro Park. It was during this time period, that the relationship 

between Rav Chaim Kreiswirth k"eumz and the Chernobler Rebbe was established, 

as Rav Chaim (on his first trip to America) was one of many ohnfj hshnk, who were 

welcomed to his home. The Chernobler Rebbetzins were also involved in chessed 

activities such as establishing and supporting such important ,usxun, as the Bais 

Yaakov of Boro Park, Ezras Torah and Yeshiva Torah Vodaath. 

It was in this home, steeped in sxj, and from his years studying at the Telz and 

Mir Yeshivas, that Reb Shlomo developed into a person that always wanted to help 

and work for the benefit of the kkf and each individual within it. This led him to 

serve as a Rav of a shul and as a chaplain for the U.S. Navy at Floyd Bennet Field 

in Brooklyn. His vruxn and upbringing gave him the foundation for understanding 

people and providing them with the support they needed in furtherance of the 

Torah values he cherished. Reb Shlomo engrained these attributes into his 

children and friends by maintaining his own home in a manner similar to that of 

his parents, where the acts of ohsxj ,khnd and ohjrut ,xbfv were exalted and prevalent, 

his vruxn was extolled and relayed, ohnfj hshnk, in need of respite and support were 

regularly hosted, and where shiurim and scheduled minyanim were organized. His 

Pesach Seder was open to all, especially those in need, kfthu h,h ihpfhs kf. 

Reb Shlomo’s relationship with ohnfj hshnk, was legendary. All knew that if you 

wanted to be vmg ktua by Rav Chaim Kreiswirth k"eumz, you went to Reb Shlomo’s 

house because that’s where you would find him when he was in America. Reb 

Shlomo cherished these opportunities to spend time with Rav Chaim where he 

could assist him with his asuev ,sucg and continuously glean from his vru, and 

vnfj. Reb Shlomo developed his affinity for being ohnfj hshnk, anan as a young man 

meeting the myriad of vru,תleaders who visited his parents’ home and as a shnk, 

evcun of Rav Stein k"eumz in Yeshivas Telz and Rav Avrohom Kalmanovitch k"eumz in 

Yeshivas Mir. 

Reb Shlomo possessed a keen insight into the abilities of others as well as the 

special character trait of having an vcuy ihg, finding joy in other’s successes. As 

a consequence, he would assist others in identifying proper paths for their 

development and success. When others achieved their goals, Reb Shlomo was 

truly happy for them. He believed in encouraging and harnessing the power





of an individual’s own strengths and capabilities in furtherance of their own 

aspirations and the Torah values he held so dear. To that end, he founded and was 

the first Director of the Touro College Physician Assistant (PA) Program where 

he sought to enable young men and women to earn a rewarding and meaningful 

vxbrp from serving the health needs of others. Ultimately, he would be a member 

of the Program’s first graduating class and go on to care for the health needs of 

many, particularly adult members of the community with special needs and those 

suffering from the effects of diabetes. 

It is most appropriate that Yeshivas Toras Chaim is dedicating its Eitz Chaim 

Award at this year’s Inaugural Dinner to Reb Shlomo and establishing the Yad 

Shlomo Shmuel Tomchei Torah Fund in his memory. This will help create an 

enduring legacy to help perpetuate the ,ushn and ,udvbv of Reb Shlomo Twersky 

k"mz in caring for the welfare of others and particularly, the ohshnk,תand Rebbeim 

of Yeshiva Toras Chaim, an institution that gave him much ,jb since its 

establishment a little over three years ago. He was an integral force behind its 

formation and a continuous source of support for those involved in fostering this 

vru, ouen. May the ,ufz of the Torah learning that he encouraged and supported be a 

shining light in this dark ,ukdגand ultimately lead us to ubhnhc vrvnc ubhesm jhan.

Chazal teach us that a talmid can only learn from a Rebbi 

that is similar to a ‘v ltkn an angel of Hashem. 

If the talmid sees that his Rebbi is 

single mindedly focused on the growth of his talmidim– 

as angels are focused only on their particular mission, 

and that his motives are pure, as angels are, 

then the Rebbi’s message will penetrate deeply into 

the hearts of his talmidim. 

This may be the secret for the ‘magical’ success we have 

seen in Reb Chanina’s talmidim over the years. 

It is this formula which Reb Chanina has turned into a ‘standard’. 

A standard which has become identified with Toras Chaim.

Words are inadequate to describe the heartfelt appreciation 

we have for our dear friend and partner 

Reb Ephraim Kutner, tonight’s Dinner Chairman. 

Not long ago, when Toras Chaim was a mere dream 

which required much development and investment, he was there for us, 

providing encouragement and enthusiasm which empowered us 

to turn this dream into a reality. 

This involvement did not wane as the plans progressed 

and continues to this very day. 

Reb Ephraim has been a true cuy rcj to the Yeshiva 

helping both ubunncu upudc, everything to allow us, 

the Hanhala and Rebbeim, to focus our energies 

on our asuev ,sucg with the talmidim. 

This willingness took on new proportions with his 

initiating, planning and organizing of this Dinner, 

all accomplished with his trademark graciousness. 

This is consistent with Ephraim’s passion 

to ensure the Yeshiva’s continued success in every way. 

To aid him in this magnanimous undertaking he enlisted the help 

of his talented and capable son Aaron, a close Talmid of the Yeshiva.

not only my personal gratitude but that of every single talmid

The Rav became a fixture in our household to the delight of our

closeness and respect continued to grow between our father and you,
