CAROL DE YOUNG
President, Countryside
Plumbing & Heating
She can be reached at
carol@countrysideph.com
I have met so many
amazing, hard-working
men and women who take
a great deal of pride in
their craft and are always
looking for opportunities
to learn more and refresh
their skills to keep up with
the current trends and
requirements. I have also
met some amazing vendor
partners who are anxious
to support what we do and
want to help make our jobs easier and more efficient.
It is certainly true to serve in this role takes some time and
effort, but what I have received in return for those efforts far
outweigh the shortcomings. I
have had the opportunity to
learn more about business
and our industry from some
really great people. Our
national president, Laurie
Crigler, said it well: “Men and
women who are wise enough
to invest in an organization
that works to prosper their
industry are the people who
have the greatest success.
They know that their success
is relative to the success of
the whole. Those are the kind
of people I want to associate
with and learn from. They
are the kind of people I know I
can gain from.”
The trips I took to Washington, D.C., for the legislative
conference in June, as well as the amazing national
PHCC convention in Milwaukee last fall were awesome
experiences to meet some major industry leaders from
across the country. But the people I have met right here
in Wisconsin are true examples of the heart and soul of
our industry and they represent the new and renewed
friendships that I treasure the most. I cannot explain how
proud I am to play a role in this industry that has been so
gratifying and rewarding to me and my family.
A YEAR OF REWARDING EXPERIENCES
As I move forward from my first year as president of the PHCC
Wisconsin Association and begin my second year, it seems
a good time to reflect on what I have learned. I have had
opportunities to address many of our great plumbing and HVAC
professionals from around the state at several of our seminars.
Men and women who are
wise enough to invest in an
organization that works to
prosper their industry are the
people who have the greatest
success. They know that their
success is relative to the
success of the whole.
THE VALUE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION
Continuing education is a lifelong journey of learning and
discovery and the PHCC Wisconsin Association has the tools
you need to learn more about your craft and get your CE
credits at the same time!
Hopefully by now, everyone across the state has seen
the email invitations to our upcoming continuing education
seminars. If we have your email address, you should be
getting the notices. If you are not getting them, please contact
Jeff Beiriger or myself to get added to our lists. Our spring
2018 seminar lineup included two in February, one on March
16 (Pleasant Prairie), and one on April 13 (Johnson Creek). If
you haven’t gotten your continuing education requirements
yet for your license renewals, these are some exceptional
ways to learn some very pertinent updates to our Wisconsin
Plumbing codes. If you have not met our trainer, Jim Davis,
you are in for quite a treat!
He makes learning fun and
interesting – no one naps
during any of his programs.
You also get to meet some of
our many vendor partners
who support these seminars
and display their products
so you can see the latest and
greatest additions to the
materials, tools and supplies
we use in our businesses.
We will also be offering
some great HVAC seminars
for those of you who want
to stay abreast of the trends
and updates on that side of
our industry. Technology
is always advancing with
digital and smart controls, and it has never been more
important than now to stay up-to-date. Our seminars are
a great way to keep current and also learn something
new – and the bonus is that you get to network with other
professionals at the same time.
Summers in the construction trades are busy for all of us,
but come fall, we will offer more of these great seminars
in even more locations. All you need to do is invest a day to
learning and you will be rewarded tenfold with knowledge,
trade tips and practices. If you are able to stay until the end
of the day, you may win a
door prize and Jeff Beiriger
may even buy you a beer
or beverage of your choice!
Check out our website to
learn more, or to register
for any of our upcoming
programs.
The most rewarding
part of our belonging and
sharing in an association
like PHCC is that you get
the news and updates
from the right people, the
professionals just like you
who share the same daily
challenges and concerns. It
is comforting to know that
others are dealing with
the same issues as you are,
and you can find out what
worked out for them as
well as what did NOT work.
That is one of the “priceless”
values you get from this
association, and a big return
on your career investment.
Executive Director's
REPORT
BY JEFF BEIRIGER
JEFF BEIRIGER
CONNECTING IN A NEW, OLD WAY
When I first started
in the association world,
things weren’t the same
as they were just a few
years earlier. If the stories
the old-timers told were
true, the meetings were
a lot tamer in the early
1990s than they were in
the 1960s and 1970s. Most
everyone attributed that
to a more business-like
demeanor that emerged in
the 1980s and I’m willing to accept that answer.
In time, the business aspect of meetings and conferences
was challenged by another
trend, the availability of
information on the Internet.
But can the Internet really
provide you with all of the
answers?
What’s the burning
question you have about
your business today? Type
that into a search engine.
Ask Alexa. Ask Siri. I’m
betting that you don’t get
the answer you’re looking
for.
So what exactly do
you get out of a meeting
or conference that you
can’t get out of surfing
the Internet? One author
has suggested that there
are four things: content,
conversation, community, and context.
As for content, you attend meetings and conferences
expecting to hear the newest and most insightful
information. You learn passively by being a member of
the audience and taking notes.
That meeting or conference is also about creating a
shared experience, one that you can use to open the
door for a conversation with someone who also attended
and heard the same message. Speakers are there to be
conversation starters.
Once the conversation starts, be intentional. It’s during
those conversations that we have the all-too-rare
opportunity to talk, face-to-face, with our peers and some
of our mentors and teachers. As long as we arrive with
a burning question, every conversation we have brings
us closer to the answers we seek. Asking so many of our
peers outside of a meeting or conference would take
It’s during those conversations
that we have the all-too-rare
opportunity to talk, face-toface,
with our peers and some
of our mentors and teachers. As
long as we arrive with a burning
question, every conversation
we have brings us closer to the
answers we seek.
forever and you’d miss the lively debates that your
question might create.
Meetings and conferences also provide a chance to
expand your community. “Community” is about meeting
new people, building new friendships or professional
relationships at meal tables, at the refreshments, and
in the hallways. Community is where we connect and
reconnect with colleagues and friends and a chance to
have those too rare conversations.
As for context, when we attend an event – especially
when we have to travel for it – we break our daily routines.
We’re in a different location, sometimes in a different
bed, eating different food, waking at a different time of
day. These disruptions shake us out of familiar mindsets.
Now add these disruptions to content, conversation, and
community, and it’s easy to
understand why meetings
and conferences can inspire
us – if we let them.
If you’ve attended
CONNECT last year or one of
our many seminars so far
this year, I think you know
that we’ve got something
special happening and that
we’re delivering on all
four counts. There’s great
content, good conversations,
a strong sense of community,
and enough that was
different to put you in a
learning mood.
I realize that convenience
might be a word that you
might use for the Internet,
and being “connected” to
500 people can feel like a whole lot of people, but what
about the depth? Being truly connected to a smaller but
much more engaged group – like the people at one of our
seminars – provides better value because it provides a
better overall learning experience. It’s an investment
and it’s a good one!
So be intentional. Sign up for one of our plumbing, HVAC,
or business programs. Budget the time and the money
and make it happen. Once you arrive, have a burning
question and go find your answer! You won’t get that by
sitting in the back or avoiding the exhibitors. It might be
uncomfortable at first, but it won’t be for long.
I’ve always believed that we get out of the many
experiences in life exactly what we put into it. So we’ll
provide you with the date, the time, the location, and the
speakers. The rest is up to you….
From the
CAPITOL
UPDATES FROM THE NATIONAL AND STATE CAPITOLS
D.C. Updates
At the federal level, the industry should be interested in
the recently passed tax legislation and federal budget. The
tax legislation will mean big changes for small business
owners and the pass-through taxation of company profits.
Another point of interest will be the higher exemptions for
the death tax, something that can aid the transfer of small
businesses from one generation to the next.
RENEWABLE ENERGY TAX CREDITS
Additionally, the federal government, after a year-long
battle, restored balance in the renewable energy tax
credits. For more than a year, “orphan technologies” such as
biomass and geothermal heat pumps, were left out of the
federal tax credits for residential installations even as wind
and solar were enjoying tax benefits. Although Republicans
were hesitant at first to agree to additional tax credits,
they knew that removing wind and solar credits would be
difficult and so they were compelled to act by a desire to not
pick “winners” and “losers” in the renewable energy debate.
Geothermal installers reported drops of 50 to 60 percent
after tax credits were eliminated at the end of 2016. Under
the new legislation, tax credits were restored retroactive
to Jan. 1, 2017 and will continue through Dec. 31, 2022 with
the first three years at 30 percent and the final two at 26
percent and 22 percent respectively.
MADISON Updates
At the time of this writing, the state Assembly has
adjourned for the year. The state Senate has just one more
session day scheduled and unless it
passes, without amendment, bills
coming over from the Assembly,
those bills will die.
Among the last group of bills to
pass was a child tax credit and a
sales tax holiday. The state was
projecting a surplus for the end of
the fiscal year and Republicans, at
the request of Gov. Walker, passed
the legislation as their way of
returning the surplus back to
taxpayers, rather than depositing
it in state coffers or looking for
additional ways to spend the
surplus.
Democrats scoff at that idea,
noting that the moves are being
made to pander to voters in
an election year and further
noting that the tax cuts are being
provided before the money has
actually been received and even
as an incentive package is being
considered to convince Kimberly-Clark to retain several
hundred jobs in the Fox Valley.
RE-ELECTION UNCERTAINTY
What seems certain is that there is uncertainty among
Republicans going into this election season. For one, in generic
polls (based on party alone and not a particular candidate),
Democrats are seeing higher numbers than they’ve seen in
a very long time. Mid-term elections on a federal level are
notorious for seeing tidal wave changes, with the opposition
party – Democrats in this year – scoring big gains in U.S.
House and Senate seats. It was in exactly this sort of midterm
election, in 2010, that Gov. Walker and Republicans took
control of the governor’s office and the state Senate, and
picked up a Congressional seat and a U.S. Senate seat as well.
A loss in a special election in the northwest part of the
state also has Republicans more focused on the fall elections.
In a state Senate race that had been won by a Republican by
25-plus points and carried by President Trump in 2016, the
Democratic candidate soundly defeated a Republican who
was looking to move from the Assembly to the Senate. There
were several reasons offered for the upset by both sides, but
clearly it has upped the ante for the fall.
Even as we wait for the fall, there will be another
bellwether election for the state and that’s an election for
the Wisconsin Supreme Court. More recently, conservative
candidates have been winning the statewide races for the
court, but that’s been the case with almost every statewide
APPRENTICESHIP EXPANSION
By Michael Copp
PHCC—National Association Executive Vice President
The Department of Labor Task Force established by President
held a formative meeting with more meetings expected early in
2018. The mission of the task force is to identify strategies and
proposals to promote apprenticeships, especially in sectors
where apprenticeship programs are insufficient.
The Executive Order recognizes apprentice programs
that are in place, performing well, and placing individuals
in successful careers. The PHCC Educational Foundation
apprenticeship program, recognized by the DOL, is one
example of that type of in-place program that is based on
a four-year curriculum with required on-the-job training,
typically leading to licensure in jurisdictions where required.
However, the DOL Task Force has agreed in principle that the
typical DOL-registered/approved apprenticeship program is
not keeping up with labor demands.
Initial impressions are that the DOL Task Force is looking
at World Class Organizations (and specifically their training
programs) to better understand and ultimately recommend
the establishment of competency-based DOL-approved
programs that would be available in addition to existing
traditional apprenticeship
programs. The competencybased
model would teach
task-oriented competencies
that lead to portable
credentials. A candidate could
take accelerated training on
tasks, achieve a credential,
and work independently
under that credential. The
skills training could be
stackable in that individuals
could add competencies over
time and expand their work
expertise. Additionally, there
is interest in making the
credentials portable such that
there would be recognition across jurisdictional lines. Finally,
the DOL Task Force intends for the entire competency-based
training regimen, once completed, to meet the requirements
of existing apprenticeship programs in those states that
require a license to practice.
It’s important that we remember the transcendental value
of the apprenticeship system, which was and remains a way
to hand down the “craft” and “science” from one generation
to the next for the sake of preserving the professionalism of
an industry. While there is a desire to ensure that we have
“skilled labor” for our industry, it is even more important that
we have professional and licensed master tradespeople who
are not merely competent in installing and servicing a limited
number of products and systems, but are also knowledgeable
It’s important that we remember
the transcendental value of the
apprenticeship system, which was and
remains a way to hand down the “craft”
and “science” from one generation to
the next for the sake of preserving the
professionalism of an industry.
about why they do what they do and hence, can help their
clients solve problems. In our collective rush to increase the
skilled labor pool, the DOL Task Force cannot lose sight of the
potential collapse of the traditional apprenticeship system
because of commoditized competencies that may not actually
be interchangeable between employers (companies do things
differently). We will end up with “Jacks and Jills of all trades
and experts in none” who may elect to satisfy only those
competencies necessary to become immediately employable
and hence, may never complete an apprenticeship and not
meet licensing requirements in many states.
Much of the DOL competency program is yet to be
determined. The establishment of the actual competencies
needs to be considered as well as the required training.
Creation of the training content and expert evaluation
for DOL approval would
be required. How the
credentialing process would
work and who would do the
credentialing is a question as
well. Lastly, the interaction
of these programs with
existing licensing programs
would have to be reconciled.
As the work of the DOL Task
Force proceeds, many of these
questions need answers. For
example, standards must
be in place to ensure that
competent plumbing and
HVAC professionals are
maintaining the integrity
of potable water systems, sanitary drainage systems and
heating and air conditioning systems that are protecting
the health and safety of our nation and preserving the
environment.
As the Task Force deliberations continue, we will monitor
the progress and provide updates to PHCC members. If you
have thoughts you would like considered, please email
PHCC Educational Foundation’s annual
DEPARTMENT OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
ENCOURAGES CONTRACTOR PARTICIPATION
With a drastic labor shortage facing the
construction industry, attracting skilled workers
to the field is more important than ever.
The most recent report from the Department of Labor
Statistics showed that of all 2016 high school graduates,
69.7 percent were enrolled in college. That means that
the 30 percent who did not go on to college should have
had exposure to the trades and technical skills. In the
majority of cases, this did not happen. Why? Since the late
1950s-early’60s, there was an emphasis on college prep
classes resulting in the downsizing of vocational training.
Following that came a variety of educational mandates
and budgetary constraints that further eroded the
presence of “shop” class.
The good news is that over the past few years, with an
increased outcry from trade associations and widespread
reporting on the labor shortage, there have been efforts
on the state and national governmental levels to reintroduce
pre-apprenticeship programs.
The PHCC National Association and the PHCC Educational
Foundation are also working to spread the word with
their website, www.phccareers.com, which highlights the
benefits of the trades.
While this is all good, grass roots efforts by contractors/
business owners can even be more impactful as they give
students, parents, and teachers an upfront look at their
industry.
Carol De Young, president of PHCC Wisconsin Association
and president of Countryside Plumbing & Heating, is proactive
in letting high school students know about the
opportunities in plumbing and HVAC.
“I have had very good results from networking with
our local schools and inviting the educators into my shop
to understand better what we do,” she said. “Last spring,
I spoke to some classes at the high school about the
opportunities and have been invited to do that again. The
educators and the kids just need the resources to learn
about our opportunities and we as employers are that
resource.”
De Young also attended the Apprenticeship Leaders
Roundtable sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of
Workforce Development (DWD) at the Madison Concourse
Hotel in November. It was planned as the kickoff event
for National Apprenticeship Week 2017 (Nov. 13-19). Fifty
apprenticeship employers and partners attended the event.
“Our entire focus (at the roundtable) was on apprenticeship
opportunities in many careers, not just plumbing,” De Young
said. “The state and federal governments are behind this
effort and are allocating funding to expand it, so we need
to take advantage of this boost so everyone knows there
are very lucrative options available to them in addition to
the traditional four-year college.”
Joshua Johnson, Chief, Field Operations, Bureau
of Apprenticeship Standards, Dept. of Workforce
Development, provided some background information on
the Leader program and why it is important for businesses
to get involved.
THE INTERNET
OF THINGS (IOT)
IS MOVING THE PLUMBING
INDUSTRY TO PREVENTATIVE
MAINTENANCE
By Henry Halimi
IN 2015, 45 PERCENT 1 OF U.S. HOMEOWNERS
INSURANCE LOSSES WERE THE RESULT OF WATER
DAMAGE AND FREEZING. MOST PEOPLE ARE
SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT WATER DAMAGE IS
THE LEADING CAUSE OF PREVENTABLE HOMEOWNERS
INSURANCE CLAIMS IN THE U.S., BEING FILED AT TWICE 2
THE FREQUENCY AS FIRE AND THEFT COMBINED. NOT ME.
The reality is that plumbing fails over time, and needs to
be maintained. For decades as a plumbing manufacturer,
and then as a forensic expert retained by other plumbing
manufacturers, I dealt with thousands of claims from insurance
companies. As these inevitable plumbing failures happen in
homes, homeowners file a claim for their losses with their
insurance company. Often those insurance companies would
then file claims against the plumbing manufacturer alleging
that the plumbing products were defective or designed poorly.
Some were, most weren’t.
But perhaps even worse is $9 billion 3 a year in property
damage is being caused by this water damage, and over a
trillion gallons a year of our most precious resource, water,
are being leaked from our homes. On average, 13 percent of a
household’s water is lost to leaks.
All the while, home plumbing just sat there dumb, without
seeing meaningful innovation for decades. This happened while
the rest of the home saw all kinds of innovation. Electricity got
electric circuit breakers. Gas got gas shutoffs. Burglar alarms,
sprinklers and smoke detectors were brought in to keep us
safe, and HVAC systems to keep us more comfortable. And most
of these benefited the professional trades as well. Each of those
advancements required professional installation.
On the other hand, plumbing innovation sounded like an
oxymoron. For decades, there was no parallel to the circuit
breaker, gas shut-off, sprinkler or alarm for plumbing. There
was nothing to notify us of leaks or shut the water off. People
would only call a contractor for plumbing when something
went terribly wrong – not to help maintain the home.
From within the plumbing industry, I started evangelizing
the idea of a technology revolution for plumbing. “Plumbing
with wires,” I used to call it. Well the future is here.
In the last five years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has
revolutionized the way people interact with their homes in
many different ways. It has empowered interconnectivity in
a way that most of us couldn’t imagine. With the prevalence of
smartphones and IoT, people’s “smart devices” offer convenience
in all corners of their homes: toasters that automatically toast
when a morning alarm goes off, thermostats that automatically
adjust settings based on people being home or not, and even
voice-enabled devices to play music and read the news.
The plumbing industry has been no exception to this IoT
revolution, which has revitalized the industry with innovation.
Professional trades people have built entire businesses around
installing tankless water heaters, filtration systems, and water
purification systems that are now Wi-Fi enabled and “smart.”
Plumbing apprenticeship instructor and WI-
PHCC member Randy Lorge again was a team
leader for the International Community Plumbing
Challenge (CPC) 2017 in Indonesia, Nov. 9-15. Lorge
also participated in CPC's in India and Africa. The
challenge for 2017 was to upgrade the facility of a
school in Cicau Villate in the Indonesian province
of West Java where 300 students shared just two
toilets with no hand washing facilities.
26 The Wisconsin PHC Contractor SPRING 2018

The toilets are squat toilets and
flushing was done by dumping a pail
of water into the toilet, which was
then discharged to a seepage pit. A
sustainable upgrade solution for water
supply, wastewater and hand washing
at the school was the objective.
The team of 34 members from
Indonesia, India, Australia, and the U.S.
installed all new underground drains
for the toilets and sinks, improved the
existing squat toilets, and installed
two additional units as well as a hand
washing station with three taps. A state
of the art septic tank with a chlorinator
was added, which discharges to a new
evaporation drain field. Additionally,
the school children were taught the
importance of hand-washing.
To ensure the school had enough
water, the plan called for disconnecting
the current water supply from a
contaminated reservoir, connecting to
the city service and filling elevated
800-gallon storage tanks, which are
controlled by float valves. Although
the city water supply is safe, it is
unreliable and is only on for a couple
of hours a day, every other day. The
tanks were sized so that when the
city system shuts down, there is still
enough water to run the school’s
plumbing system for up to two and a
half days.
This year’s CPC also included
the component of training local
community members on the plumbing
systems, how they work, and their
maintenance. New drains and
waterlines were roughed in for the
next phase of the project of two more
toilets and wash basins for those
community members to complete in
2018. Training also was extended to
instructors and students from local
technical colleges on Indonesia’s newly
adopted plumbing standard and the
importance of plumbing.
With coordination from Indonesian
IAPMO officials, area contractors,
engineers, plumbing product
manufacturers, and standards officials
toured the site. The group then pledged
to form the first-ever plumbing
association in Indonesia, which will
work toward standardizing the
various aspects of plumbing.
“It was an incredibly rewarding
week,” Lorge said. “Long days, extreme
humidity, but in the end, one of my most
favorite projects yet.”
graceful movement of fabric and the curvatures of an hourglass. Rhen’s petite
spout delivers water that follows its curvature, giving the user a view into
the waterway. Rhen products and accessories include faucets, showering
products, and bath accessories.
AMERICAN STANDARD SPECTRA+
Employing first-to-market technology, the new American Standard
Spectra+ Touch and Spectra+ eTouch showerheads change spray patterns
with a simple fingertip touch on the outside ring of the showerhead, making it
easy to customize the shower experience, even with wet hands. The Spectra+
eTouch showerhead includes a remote control to mount on any shower wall to
provide a stylish and ergonomic solution for users who have trouble reaching
the showerhead due to age, height, or mobility restrictions.
GROHE RAINSHOWER AND EUPHORIA
The GROHE Rainshower 310 SmartActive showerhead offers two options in
one showerhead. Oval water outlets arranged in a star-shaped pattern at the
center of the spray face generate a vigorous massage jet. They are surrounded
by an arrangement of nozzles producing a much more gentle rain shower
spray. To simplify switching between the different shower functions, GROHE
offers the new GrohTherm SmartControl trims that feature an intuitive pushand-turn
button technology.
GROHE’s Euphoria 260 showerhead offers a three-zone design for customized
showering. By simply turning the center button on the showerhead face, the
user can change the spray from a powerful, concentrated jet spray, to a wider
SmartRain spray to a broad rain spray for full body coverage. Available in
2.5 gpm and 1.75 gpm flow rates, it is WaterSense-certified. Equipped with a
half-inch metal ball joint, it is compatible with all standard shower arms and
allows for upgrade of existing showers.
PEERLESS SIDEKICK SHOWER SYSTEM
Delivering an innovative, multipurpose showerhead and shower wand duo
to simplify daily cleaning and bathing needs, the Peerless Sidekick Shower
System offers a drenching experience with water-amplifying spray. The
convenient shower wand features attachments for ease of use. One example
is the pet attachment, which allows owners to combine the jet spray setting on
the wand with “fingers” to scrub dirty fur more efficiently than with a water
spray alone; the cleaning pad attachment permits water to flow through the
pad, reducing cleaning time. The SideKick Shower System will be available in
May 2018.
MOEN VOICE ACTIVATED SHOWER
U by Moen Voice Activated Shower offers mobile connectivity, allowing
homeowners to activate their shower by the sound of their voice. Users ask
Amazon’s Alexa voice service to remotely start the shower by previously
created personalized presets in the U by Moen app. The U by Moen includes a
digital valve that offers precise, thermostatic temperature control and enables
the user to connect up to four shower devices. The Wi-Fi-connected digital
shower controller features a five-inch, non-touch, LCD screen that provides
feedback on the shower status through on-screen messaging and notifications.
KBIS// TOILETS
GERBER AVALANCHE ELITE
Gerber’s Avalanche Elite toilet features a contemporary design with a semiconcealed
trapway. The two-inch, fully glazed trapway is built separately
from the body and makes the toilet easier and quicker to install than many
skirted toilets. No special hardware or bolt alignment required. The toilet’s
enlarged, rectangular footprint means it will cover virtually any old/dirty
flooring or damage caused by the previous toilet, making it a good choice for a
remodel, renovation or replacement job.
ECOBEE4
Winner of the Best of IBS Energy Efficient Product, the ecobee4 with
Amazon Alexa voice service and far-field voice recognition combines smart
thermostat functionality and voice. With a built-in speaker and microphone,
ecobee4 can be controlled through its sleek touch-screen, a smart device or
voice. Alexa voice service allows customers to simply ask their ecobee4 to
adjust the temperature of the home, in addition to the growing list of Alexa
skills such as setting a timer, helping plan a commute or playing the news.
Through far-field voice recognition, ecobee4 will conveniently respond to
voice commands from anywhere in the room. ecobee4 is also compatible
with the company’s signature room sensor technology, which measures
occupancy and temperature to deliver comfort when the customer is home
NORITZ RESIDENTIAL COMBINATION BOILER
The Noritz Residential Combination Boiler (NRCB) allows for simultaneous
residential domestic hot water and space heat. It performs at a 95 percent AFUE,
and is both AHRI-certified and ENERGY STAR-certified at the highest efficiency
rating. A corrosion-resistant copper heat exchanger offers increased durability
and a longer boiler life. It has a temperature range of 80 to 180 degrees F for
space heating and 90 to 140 degrees F for domestic hot water.
RHEEM TANKLESS WATER HEATERS WITH BUILT-IN
RECIRCULATION PUMP
Rheem High Efficiency Tankless Gas Water Heaters with Built-in
Recirculation Pump deliver a continuous flow of hot water without the
wait. Compatible with almost any home due to flexible venting options and
compact design, these powerful units boast a maximum gpm of 11 and .94 UEF.
When activated, the built-in pump circulates hot water from the heater and
returns the cold water that would normally run down the drain through a
dedicated return line. For installations without a dedicated return line, the
included crossover valve can be installed to use existing plumbing. Water
and gas leak detection automatically shuts off the unit if issues are detected.
AHR//
YORK AFFINITY VARIABLE CAPACITY RESIDENTIAL SYSTEMS
A 2018 AHR Innovation Award finalist, the new YORK Affinity Variable
Capacity Residential Systems feature inverter-driven variable capacity
technology, which dynamically adjusts capacity and airflow, unlike
conventional systems that simply turn on or off. Air circulates more precisely
and quietly, maximizing comfort while reducing energy consumption. The
systems are ENERGY STAR Most Efficient qualified, featuring up to 20 SEER
YXV air conditioners and YZV heat pumps that can reduce energy costs by
as much as 50 percent compared to older 10 SEER units.
REHAU’S EVERLOC+
REHAU’s EVERLOC+ compression-sleeve fitting system now is in a wider
range of sizes – up to 2-inch diameter – to address plumbing and hydronic
piping requirements in the commercial and multi-family sectors. The REHAU
PEXa plumbing system includes RAUPEX crosslinked polyethylene (PEXa) pipe
and EVERLOC+ polymer and lead-free brass fittings featuring four sealing edges
and a textured PEXa compression sleeve for a tight, secure grip. Connections are
easily made using a consistent, two-step expansion/compression process, after
which they are immediately ready for pressure testing. Adding to the ease and
efficiency of installation are the high levels of flexibility, strength and durability
offered by RAUPEX pipe. These qualities make RAUPEX easier to work with than
more rigid materials such as copper and CPVC; and because fewer connections
are required, additional savings are realized with regard to time, labor and
material. Specifically, the REHAU PEXa system installs up to 50 percent faster
than copper press, and up to 65 percent faster than copper sweat systems.
ARMSTRONG STAINLESS STEEL VERTICAL IN-LINE PUMPS
Armstrong Fluid Technology announced a new line of Stainless Steel Vertical
In-Line Pumps for plumbing applications in residential and commercial buildings.
Featuring superior energy-saving performance and space-saving features, the
new stainless steel models are ideal for potable water or residential water
applications. Building owners can now benefit from exact flow and pressure
output without throttling. The new stainless steel VIL pumps are available in six
sizes ranging from 1 to 2 hp and with 1.5-inch and 2-inch connections.
VIEGA’S MEGAPRESS FITTINGS
Viega’s MegaPress Fittings are now available for IPS stainless steel. The fittings
make secure connections in less than seven seconds, which helps keep a project
on time or ahead of schedule. That is up to a 60 percent reduced installation time
compared to welding or threading. Available in 304 and 316 stainless steel, they
are also approved for use with Schedule 10 to Schedule 40 pipe.
CARRIER SINGLE-ZONE DUCTLESS SYSTEM
Carrier introduced a 9,000 BTUh 42 SEER and 15 HSPF single-zone ductless
system to deliver greater flexibility to customers in colder climates. It provides
100 percent cooling capacity down to minus 22 degrees F and 100 percent
heating capacity down to minus 5 degrees F. It also offers an array of home
comfort features. Its integrated relative humidity sensor controls humidity
using a smart algorithm that targets a user defined humidity level together
with temperature setpoint. An infrared sensor detects human movement
to further reduce energy usage when a room is unoccupied or by making
automatic intelligent decisions for a more comfortable home experience. This
function can set airflow to either follow or avoid people in the room or zone the
system is conditioning. The system includes Wi-Fi as a standard feature, allowing
homeowners to communicate directly with it through Android or Apple.
FRANKLIN ELECTRIC INLINE 1100 SPECPAK PRESSURE
BOOSTING SYSTEM
Inline 1100 SpecPAK Pressure Boosting System from Franklin Electric
connects easily to nearly any plumbing configuration to provide an easyto-size
water pressure boosting solution for numerous HVAC applications.
Contractors simply determine how much water is required to be boosted
to the desired constant pressure output and the system comes properly
packaged. The pump itself, the Franklin Electric Inline 1100, is a quiet, allin-one
constant water pressure system that contains the pump, motor, and
drive in a compact package. As water volume needs increase, the pump
instantly accelerates to the proper speed to ensure the water pressure
stays constant throughout the application.
FRANKLIN ELECTRIC’S INLINE CONTROLS
Franklin Electric’s new Inline Controls include five pump starting and
control devices that pair with a variety of submersible or surface pumps up
to 20 amps (or approximately 2 hp) to provide or boost the system’s overall
water pressure – and in many cases, without the need of an additional
bladder tank. Depending on application requirements and selected model,
the product family offers various forms of system protection, including
dry run, dead head pumping, over amperage, locked system, and over
pressurization. They also offer two unique features that ensure the system
remains functional and hassle free, including: a daily motor rotation start
designed to energize the motor at least once every 24 hours to prevent
system locking, and a unique automatic restart feature eliminating the need
to manually restart the pump in the case of an unexpected trip or fault.
The updated Little Giant Inline 400 Pressure Boosting System now comes
rated as a NEMA 3R outdoor system. The Inline 400 is constructed of UVresistant
materials and comes standard with a protective weather cap to
be used for maximum protection of the unit when mounted vertically in
outdoor applications. Once the Inline 400 is installed, the cap is easily attached
over the top of the unit using an affixed Velcro button. It is UL classified for
water quality mechanical device, NSF/ANSI 61 and 372, and Cold Water 6R21.
In addition, the Inline 400 is now available for order with a 2-liter expansion
tank at no additional cost. The standalone Inline 400 unit can be purchased
should it be needed to meet customer’s installation needs.
RINNAI SENSEI TANKLESS WATER HEATER
Rinnai’s next generation Sensei tankless water heater allows for easier
and more flexible installation in more locations and better operational
performance. It also features a new combustion design that enables
components to work together in harmony for enhanced output. The Sensei
has a total of 14 vent configurations, a 65-foot vent run with 2-inch PVC and
quick and easy gas conversion. The Sensei is designed to self-compensate in
areas with low or fluctuating gas pressures to optimize performance. For
serviceability, every component was designed to be removed in under 10
minutes including the heat exchanger, water flow servo, PCB and turbo fan.
SPARTAN BIOSCIENCE LEGIONELLA DETECTION SYSTEM
Spartan Bioscience Legionella Detection System is the first on-site DNA
test for Legionella and it can detect and quantify Legionella bacteria in 45
minutes. The system consists of a coffee-cup-sized portable DNA analyzer,
called the Spartan Cube, and a single-use disposable test cartridge. The
system is the winner of the 2018 AHR Expo Innovation Award for Indoor Air
Quality. Globally, there are hundreds of thousands of office towers, hospitals,
hotels, shopping malls, and other large buildings at risk for infection by
Legionella. Weekly testing with the Spartan system can detect Legionella
bacterial growth early and allow cleaning and decontamination of the
cooling tower before Legionella reaches dangerous levels to human health.
Federated Insurance
UPDATE
DRIVE S.A.F.E.R.
The distracted driving epidemic continues to wreak havoc on our nation’s highways. In
2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported more than 2,000,000
injuries. Worse yet, they counted 37,461 deaths related to motor vehicle traffic crashes on
U.S. roadways. The death toll is rising 5 – 8 percent annually and there is no end in sight. †
HOW WOULD A DEATH OR DISABLING INJURY AFFECT YOUR LIFE?
What are you doing to keep yourself and/or your
employees safe? Such a significant number of these crashes
are preventable, as our societal “need” to stay socially
connected seems to have no boundaries.
We can all make a difference. Our mission at Federated
Insurance is, “As a mutual insurance company, we believe
38 The Wisconsin PHC Contractor SPRING 2018

and its negative impact, and we are taking it seriously.
2015: Federated introduced and delivered The Point of
and association partners to educate and offer resources on
the epidemic of distracted driving.
2016: Federated partnered with the Minnesota
Department of Public Safety and over 30 other Minnesota
businesses to speak out against distracted driving during
Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.
2017: Federated introduced and delivered Drive S.A.F.E.
materials to all clients and association partners. Drive S.A.F.E.
was implemented to raise awareness of the main factors
(speed, attention, fatigue, emotion) that lead to car crashes,
and specifically provide risk management techniques to
address these alarming trends.
2017: Federated Insurance partnered with local NBC ®
Affiliate KARE 11 on their #EyesUp campaign to stop texting
and driving by encouraging high school-aged drivers to
pledge to not drive distracted.
We understand that changing the behavior of drivers
is not a one-time effort, but a true cultural and behavioral
shift. To help our business owners make an impact, we are
introducing a Drive S.A.F.E.R. initiative in 2018. The objective
is to reinforce the Drive S.A.F.E. message with the additional
employee training provided.
Nothing is more important behind the wheel than the
task of driving. We hope you will join us in this effort to help
protect those you love and work to eliminate distractions
behind the wheel. They’re not called accidents anymore for
About The Program/Instructors
Code is the foundation of everything we do in the plumbing industry. This year, PHCC-Wisconsin is continuing a
series of code-related programs designed to get back to the basics of our trade. For this session, we will be focusing
on Best Practices for Direct and Indirect Fixture Connections, Catch Basins and Interceptors, and Cleanouts. Leading
the discussion is Jim Davis, a Master Plumber and an experienced plumbing instructor. Jim has taught apprentices
for 20+ years and has experience teaching continuing education programs for groups such as the Water Quality
Association and the Madison Plumbing Inspectors. The program also features time to interact with vendors, our
vendor showcase, a brief safety presentation by Federated Insurance, and industry updates from Jeff Beiriger,
Executive Director of PHCC-Wisconsin.
*Continuing Education Credits
REVISED REFRIGERANT RULES FOR 2018
By Chuck White, PHCC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued
changes to the Section 608 and 609 refrigerant rules with some
specific language for technicians. One of these changes extends
the current refrigerant handling procedures to substitute or
non-ozone depleting refrigerants. Effective Jan. 1, 2018, substitute
refrigerant sales are limited to certified technicians and
certification exams are being expanded to cover these products
as well. The new exam rules would require technicians to:
- Pass a certification exam offered by an approved technician
certification program in order to maintain, service, repair,
or dispose of appliances containing Ozone Depleting
Substances or substitute refrigerants. The certification
exam will be updated to reflect the new rules and new
refrigerants prior to this date.
- Keep a copy of their certificate at their place of business.
- Maintain a copy of their certificate until three years after
no longer operating as a technician.
Existing certified technicians will maintain their status; no
additional examination will be required. Technicians are now
required additional recordkeeping duties for systems between
five and 50 pounds of refrigerant:
- The location, date of recovery, and type of refrigerant
recovered for each disposed appliance;
- The quantity of refrigerant, by type, recovered from
disposed appliances in each calendar month; and
- The quantity of refrigerant, and type, transferred for
reclamation or destruction, the person to whom it was
transferred, and the date of the transfer.
The updated Section 608 regulations include new leak
inspection and verification test requirements for owners/
operators that will affect technicians starting Jan. 1, 2019.
