<strong>MRO</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> | It could be your greatest discovery<br />

Advanced Form<strong>in</strong>g Research Centre<br />

This world-class research centre<br />

pioneers form<strong>in</strong>g and forg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

techniques to support manufactur<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

the aerospace <strong>in</strong>dustry and is expected<br />

to set new standards <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

design. It is the only research <strong>in</strong>stitute<br />

<strong>in</strong> the UK <strong>in</strong> possession of super-plastic<br />

form<strong>in</strong>g technologies, which will enable<br />

researchers to shape complex materials<br />

at temperatures of up to 960°C. The<br />

facilities will support the manufacture<br />

of a range of advanced products for<br />

aerostuctures and aero-eng<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

etc. As well as undertak<strong>in</strong>g blue-sky<br />

research to lay the foundations of future<br />

form<strong>in</strong>g and forg<strong>in</strong>g technology, the<br />

research also <strong>in</strong>cludes troubleshoot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

established <strong>in</strong>dustrial processes.<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> has a long and dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />

history <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g breakthroughs<br />

<strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technologies. The AFRC was designed<br />

to build on that history and on our<br />

world class academic research from<br />

our lead<strong>in</strong>g universities. The UK<br />

Government recently confirmed that<br />

the AFRC is a lead partner <strong>in</strong> the UK’s<br />

network of Technology Innovation<br />

Centres. It will become a key facility <strong>in</strong><br />

the first of a UK wide network of<br />

Technical Skills<br />

In addition to its university base,<br />

which produces a steady supply of<br />

graduate eng<strong>in</strong>eers across a wide<br />

range of discipl<strong>in</strong>es associated with the<br />

aerospace sector, <strong>Scotland</strong> also boasts<br />

the presence of a number of Further<br />

Education Colleges which offer a wide<br />

range of accredited vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

course designed to develop the skilled<br />

tradesmen and craftsmen that the<br />

elite technology centres supported by<br />

more than £200 million of Government<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g over the next four years. That<br />

the AFRC will play a key role <strong>in</strong> the UK’s<br />

competitive advantage <strong>in</strong> high value<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g is reward<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>deed and<br />

a clear endorsement of the facility as a<br />

trailblazer at the forefront of <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

techniques for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Colleges offer<strong>in</strong>g aviation-related<br />

courses <strong>in</strong>clude James Watt College,<br />

Ayr College and Perth College.<br />
