Skywatch Tower Takes Technology to New
Heights to Increase Safety and Deter Crime
In November of 2017, the Corpus Christi Police Department – thanks to
a generous donation from Valero and the support of the Corpus Christi
Police Foundation – welcomed its newest recruit — the FLIR Systems
Skywatch Tower, a state-of-the-art technological tool
which immediately and significantly increased the crime
fighting capacity and abilities of the CCPD.
“There is no doubt Christmas 2017 came early for all
of us at CCPD,” explains Police Chief Mike Markle, as
our new Sky watch Tower – a crime-fighting tool that is
already in use in most major cities throughout the state
– gave us the opportunity to exponentially enhance our
ability to protect our community and our citizens. We
Valero Donates
Foundation for
Skywatch Tower
were able to put this valuable resource to use right away during the holiday
season to deter and decrease criminal activity across our community,
something for which we are most
grateful.”
Skywatch – a mobile surveillance
tower which elevates to 30 feet
and has room for two trained
officers inside – is linked to the
Police Command Center and
is designed to increase security
and decrease crime. The Police
Command Center can view the
Skywatch cameras and remotely
provide immediate access
to information which, in turn,
enables them to make real-time
decisions, and instantly address
specific situations.
“We are always being tasked,” Markle says, “with finding new resources to
improve our abilities to protect our citizens and our community. Skywatch
is a perfect tool to do just that, as it is an immediate force multiplier we can
use to increase our eyes and ears throughout the city year round.”
Even though Skywatch was first used during the holidays, CCPD
considers Skywatch to be a crime fighting resource ‘for all
seasons’ and as such plans to keep Skywatch in continual use
citywide — everywhere from shopping centers to community
events and festivals such as Buc Days Parade, Beach to Bay,
The Jazz Festival, Fiesta de la Flor, Spring Break and Fourth of
July celebrations.
“Skywatch,” explains Markle, “embodies our mission to work as
an equal partner with our community to reduce crime, the fear of
crime and enhance public safety. With Skywatch, our business
community has once again stepped up to help us increase our
eyes and ears on the ground and in the air with new, state-ofthe-art
technology. We consider ourselves so fortunate to have
this kind of support from Valero and from the Corpus Christi
Police Foundation.”
A Message From the Board President
Harold
Shockley
Welcome to the TRUE BLUE Review –
the first quarterly newsletter of the Corpus Christi
Police Foundation.
The Foundation – formed in 2010 by a
group of civic-minded individuals, business
owners and leaders of this community
– was created with one goal in mind: to
make Corpus Christ a safer city for all. To
achieve that goal, our mission is – and
always has been – to provide support for
all of our men and women in blue through
the acceptance and management of taxdeductible
gifts and contributions.
In other words, the Corpus Christi Police Foundation is there to raise needed funds which ensure our police department
has the right tools and the right programs available to keep our community safe for everyone who has chosen to work and
live in Corpus Christi. Certainly that is not an easy task, but with the generous contributions of individuals, businesses and
philanthropic organizations – plus the extraordinary commitment and efforts of the CCPF Board of Directors – we are able
to succeed in our mission, and we are most grateful.
With such remarkable community support, combined with public and 100 Club member donations and our exceptional
fundraising events such as the ”State of the CCPD Breakfast” and “Back The Blue Clay Shoot,” the momentum behind
the Foundation continues to grow. That growth provides us with the opportunity to fund the many grant requests that
come our way for our local police force and, in turn, make a positive impact on our citizens, our city and our community.
Having the opportunity to experience that growth first hand, I am constantly amazed by our community and its incredible
generosity. Each of you is making a difference with your thoughtful donations. Your support is critical, as it is only through
our combined efforts that we can continue to provide high-quality equipment and training for our police department to
meet the challenges ahead. We sincerely appreciate and thank you for your continued commitment and support.
The Chief Brief
from Chief Mike Markle
From the moment you become a police
officer, your life becomes inter-woven into the
community in which you serve. Patrolling the
streets gives you the chance to be a part of
what is happening in a community at any given moment. The
truth is, every police officer is a patrolman at heart – you are
always ready to put on a uniform and go out on the street – that
is who we are, that is the job.
Regardless of whether you are patrolling the streets or serving
in an administrative capacity, there is no doubt a police officer’s
job has changed dramatically over the years.
Being a police officer used to be just about
The truth is,
every police
officer is a
patrolman
at heart.
‘catching the bad guys.’ In 2018 it is so much
more. Police officers are multi-dimensional
and their service is much more complex.
Our officers have to be more skilled, more
technologically literate, more personal and
more prepared.
For us, that is where the Corpus Christi Police
Foundation has made all the difference. Founded in 2010, by
Chief Troy Riggs and Ed Hicks, the Foundation serves as
an invaluable partner helping us find pathways
to acquire the equipment and technology we
need so we can, in turn, do our jobs to the
best of our ability.
Most recently, the Foundation teamed
up with Valero to provide us with a new
SkyWatch Tower — a tool which not only
serves as a force multiplier, but has already
shown itself to be an effective crime deterrent.
We are most grateful to the Foundation as they are
there supporting us every day as we strive to create a
safer city for our officers and our community.
