Machine, may I sit here?” AI and HI, where do we sit at this dawn
of the artifice.
The roles of AI and unique traits of Humans is an important subject. In oil and gas, a future will be
proposed and the potential challenges we need to understand suggested for consideration. The
importance of identifying the nuance and differences between the human machine and artificial
intelligence are barriers we need to pass through, to make sure we don’t end up giving too much
power to entities of computation that overlook important human traits. This is an important future
discussion for independent machine learning and use of those learnings in technology and it’s
applications.
David Reid is the Chief Marketing Officer for NOV, where he develops the global market and
strategic engine. David joined Varco International in 1992 and has lived in Scotland, California,
AI/Machine Learning in Upstream Oil & Gas – Challenges and
Opportunities
Big data analytics is the use of advanced analytic techniques such as AI against very large, diverse
data sets that include structured, semi-structured and unstructured data, from different sources, and
in different sizes from terabytes to zettabytes. AI is the science and engineering of making intelligent
systems. In this presentation, we will consider some challenges related to AI, machine learning and big
data analytics. Some technical challenges are data storage, talent people, data quality, security, and
data sources. Also, we will show some applications and opportunities related to seismic, well logs,
drilling and production monitoring.
Nasher BenHassan graduated in 1994 from King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM)
with a BS in Geophysics. He received his MS in Geophysics in 2003 from the University of Houston
and obtained his PhD (2010) in Geophysics from Imperial College London. From 1994-2001, Nasher
worked for Saudi Aramco as a computer analyst, programmer and provided seismic interpretation
software support. Since 2004, he is working with the Geophysical Technology Team under EXPEC-ARC.
Some of his contributions were: predicting reservoir properties using artificial intelligent methods and
automation in interpretation to extract faults and horizons automatically from seismic data. Currently,
Nasher is the EXPEC-ARC champion of AI and Big Data Analytics technologies.
Digitalization is the trend and a major talking point in the industry. As a relatively novel concept,
the challenges of implementing such disruptive technology can be contradicted with the change
of structure and management to support the technology. Executing such technology requires
knowledge of the business and flexibility to adapt to change. The oil and gas industry is vastly
experienced, which leads to the possibilities of attainable digitalization solutions transforming
from a dominantly experience based to data based industry. Drilling contractors, service and oil
companies are searching for novel methods to drill more for less, in keeping with highest safety
standards. The pioneering digital technologies offered by TDE Group enhance the efficiency and
safety of operations to benefit the future of the users and overall, the industry.
