Welcome
The purpose of this handbook is to detail all the activities of
Cheshire County LTA (CCLTA): to put into one single document what
we hope is all the important information for players and clubs
within Cheshire. The aim is to keep you up to date with what is
happening and to give you an insight into how tennis is organised
within the county. We would of course welcome any feedback you
may wish to give on how we can improve this handbook in future.
We already publish a Junior Handbook and for any information
relating to Junior tennis please refer to this one.

Championship Events for 2018
2017 Championship results
During the year CCLTA organises and runs a number of premier tennis
competitions attracting the very best tennis players in the county.
Senior Championship Events
35 and Over Championships - Bowdon Bowling LTC - 28th – 29th April
Men’s Championships and Ladies’ Championships -
Qualifiying - 30th/31st August - Birchwood Tennis Centre
Main draw - 1/2 September - Bidston Indoor Centre
Seniors’ Championships - David Lloyd - 7th/18th & 24th/25th March
Super Seniors’ Championships - David Lloyd - 17th/18th & 24th/25th March
Junior Events
Aegon Junior County Cup
Aegon County Cup events give players the opportunity to represent their county
in team competition in national/regional stages. The age group categories range
from 9u to Open. Events are held at different times of the year and in order to
compete players have to be selected by their county.
Junior Championships - 26-31th August - Grappenhall LTC
All standards are welcome to enter. A full range of age group events will be
run from 8u to 18u. There will also be the 3 mini age groups (red, orange & green).
12 Counties Championships
This is an inter county competition played throughout the winter months
involving players across the full junior age range.
Monkhouse Shield
This is an County Junior Inter-Club Championship held on the 3rd Sunday in Sept.

County Competitions
Cheshire County LTA Tennis Competitions
Throughout the year there are a number of tennis competitions run for all ages
and tennis abilities open to any club or individuals to enter. Your club coach
should be able to give you more information about any of these competitions.
Benenden Tennis Festival
Benenden Tennis Festivals are a
fantastic opportunity for clubs and
venues throughout the country to
host fun, themed competitions for
local players.
The Benenden Tennis Festivals are
a great way to encourage families to
lead healthy lifestyles through tennis
and be part of a health and wellbeing
community.
Quorn Family Tennis Cup
The Quorn Family Tennis Cup provides
families with the opportunity to play
tennis in an informal, fun competition
run by their local venue, while also
encouraging families to play tennis
more often and to eat healthy food to
complement an active lifestyle.
Team Challenge
Team Challenge is a fun, team
competition aimed at mini and junior
players in club programmes who are
new or inexperienced to competition.
The competition offers flexible event
and scoring formats in addition to
a number of fun prizes and giveaways
to maximise the experience for the
players on the day. All formats are
team based and matches do not
count for ratings and rankings.
Road to Wimbledon
Road to Wimbledon is the biggest
junior tournament in British tennis
and gives all 14u players the
opportunity to progress through to
compete on the world famous grass
courts at Wimbledon.
Local clubs, parks and schools are
encouraged to enter and stage a
tournament for their members/pupils
rated between 10.2 and 7.1.
Aegon Team Tennis
Aegon Team Tennis is a singles based
team competition. It aims to provide
players of all ages (8u – Open) with
regular league matches, against
similar standard players in a
competitive team environment.
A total of 6,158 teams from over 1,050
venues are playing in Aegon Team
Tennis 2017.
Summer Grade 3 & 4 Tournaments
The summer county tour is a series of
local level grade 3 and grade 4 junior
tournaments running throughout the
summer competition season.

Cheshire LTA is responsible for running 13 county teams of varying age groups.
In addition to our Open County Men's and Ladies' teams who compete in the
Summer Inter County Cup and in the Winter Indoor County Cup, we have
11 Seniors teams. All these teams compete nationally against other counties.
Our Men's Over 65s team have been national champions for three years running.

The county is responsible for organising an open inter club competition for men
and for ladies, the Cheshire Shield, and a competition for Seniors both men's and
ladies who are over 40 years old.
Currently the Cheshire Shield is run as
a one day event with all teams playing
at the same venue which alternates
between the west and the east of the
county. The Seniors' Cheshire Shield
is still played as a knockout event
throughout the summer with clubs
hosting or playing away from home.
Teams in all these events consist of
4 members and a Plate competition
is also organised for the first round
losers in the Seniors event.

Pesentation Evening Roll of Honour
The Presentation Evening is the highlight of the CCLTA calendar, celebrating all
that is good about tennis in Cheshire both on and off the court. Nominations are
received from September and all the clubs are encouraged to nominate worthy
candidates in all the categories.

The Cheshire Executive is a body of
elected volunteer officers who act in
support of their clubs, their members
and the varied interests of the tennis
community to help develop and grow
the sport within the county.
Working closely with the regional LTA
the executive and officers help
oversee and assist in implementing
the national participation strategy of
the LTA within the county.
The county currently has over 90
registered tennis clubs/places to play
and approximately 20,000 registered
British Tennis Members.
In support of the executive, CCLTA have
a dedicated large team of volunteer
officials who are involved in a wide
range of activities from running county
tennis events to carrying out the
organisation and administration of
inter county leagues, tournaments
and events.

Funding Opportunities
Sponsorship opportunities
Cheshire County LTA Club Small Loan Scheme
Cheshire County LTA sponsorship
Since its launch in 2013, the CCLTA Club
Small Loan Scheme has been hugely
successful, with many clubs taking the
opportunity of using a simple, interest
free loan to improve their facilities.
To encourage even more clubs in
Cheshire to consider ways of
developing their tennis offering, it has
been decided to increase the total
funds available in the Scheme from
£55k to £100k, using the Balance Sheet
Reserves built up by the County over
a number of years.
In addition to the increased funds
available, the County will also
contribute a grant of 10% of the loan
to the club. This will be deducted from
the last repayment due to the County.
The intention remains that the Scheme
be a simple, no frills scheme with a
straight forward application process
which is easy to administer for both
parties.
The key features are:
l Maximum loan £10,000
l Interest free
l Repayments in 5 equal instalments
annually, the first repayment
being due on 30th April in the year
following the approval of the loan
l 10% of the loan is contributed back
to the club as a grant
l Venues must be LTA registered
Application Procedure
Application forms will be issued on
request from the County Office and
should be submitted before a quarter
end (31 March, 30 June, 30 September
or 31 December.)
Appraisal Procedure
l Applications will be reviewed in the
month following each quarter end
l A panel comprising three CCLTA
Executive members will review
the application
l The panel will also consult with the
member of the Club Liaison
Committee responsible for the
club applying for the loan and will
consider the suitability of the
project based on:

Patrons and Friends of Cheshire
The Cheshire County LTA Youth Trust
Founded in 1983, to provide financial
support for junior tennis activities in
Cheshire, the Youth Trust works
closely with Cheshire County LTA to
ensure its limited resources are
well spent.
The trustees meet half yearly to
discuss numerous requests for
bursaries and grants. Funds have
been provided for, amongst other
things, coach education, equipment
purchase, individual player bursaries
and general on-court activities for
youngsters.
The Youth Trust has worked in
partnership with Cheshire clubs,
schools and local authorities where
the cost of schemes has been shared.
Friends of Cheshire
For nearly 120 years Cheshire County
LTA has administered and promoted
tennis activities in the County.
It was, for the majority of that time,
made up entirely of volunteers drawn
from the club network. In more recent
times, as the role of the LTA has
expanded, these same volunteers have
worked alongside their new coleagues.
The organisation of tennis in Cheshire
is constantly changing to reflect the
demands of the modern player.
The traditional areas of activity such as
County teams, championships and
player development have been
broadened to embrace all places
where tennis is played (including parks
and schools) and a wide variety
of competition formats to cover all
standards and ages.
Along with the LTA we work in
partnership with Places to Play,
educational establishments and local
authorities to help them improve their
facilities, coaching and competition
programmes and in many other areas.
The newly launched ‘Friends of
Cheshire’ is an ideal opportunity
for any business to get behind an
organisation committed to promoting
a healthy and fully inclusive sport. It is
also a chance for anyone, who may not
be able to offer their time, to make a
real contribution to supporting tennis,
for all its players, in our County.
We aim to be there from that first
taste of mini tennis, through to the
players reaching their full potential,
helping where we can with financial
support.
The Youth Trust relies on the generosity
of its supporters in Cheshire and the
fund-raising activities organised by
the Cheshire County LTA Marketing
Committee. We have also had
generous financial support from local
business sponsors.
A big step forward for the Youth Trust
is the launch of its Patron’s Scheme.
Backed by the Cheshire County LTA,
this new initiative is an opportunity
for anyone who is passionate about
junior tennis in Cheshire to make a
contribution. It also has the bonus of
an annual Wimbledon Draw providing
the lucky patrons with the
opportunity to purchase tickets for
The Championships.
Every penny raised by our supporters
at social events, with raffles and
auctions (all the things that charities
do) is devoted to junior tennis in
Cheshire. We have no overheads or
running costs and pay no expenses.
The trustees and our valued band
of helpers carry out their duties
entirely free of charge.

Benefits Available for all Registered Places to Play
LTA registration is the scheme for
tennis venues across the UK to
become a member of the LTA. There
are a whole range of benefits of being
a registered venue with the LTA that
will support you to maintain and
enhance your venue.
Facility Project Managers (FPMs)
give advice on technical, legal,
financial and tennis queries.

airhalls, framed fabric buildings,
planning and sinking funds.
Specialist services are available when
undertaking the development of
facilities. Tennis providers should use
SAPCA (Sport and Play Construction
Association) contractors to make sure
they are constructed to the correct

Great British Tennis Weekends
The Venue Management Tool for LTA Registered Clubs
ClubSpark is an online tool designed
to make it easier to manage and
promote your venue. You can also
promote your packages and manage
your members and send out payment
reminders. You can optionally take
payments online, including setting up
and managing Direct Debits, helping
to spread the cost for your members.
What is the Great British Tennis Weekend?

In 2017 there was a national marketing
campaign supporting 2 weekends in

Safeguarding in Tennis
Let’s get more Cheshire Schoolchildren playing Tennis!
There is plenty of support out there to help clubs and schools link up.
Schools are full of kids who’d love the chance to play tennis, so let’s bring the
two together! The Tennis Foundation’s School Club Links initiative gives local
tennis clubs the opportunity to go into schools to spread the word about the
game they love.
Safe and Inclusive Tennis
We all have a vital role to play in keeping children and adults safe from
harm. As we work towards getting more people playing tennis more often,
we recognise the importance of promoting Safe and Inclusive tennis
environments, so that people have positive experiences of tennis.
