LCI expands CHC partnership with second
H175
Lease Corporation International (LCI), the aviation
division of the Libra Group, is expanding
its partnership with CHC through the placement
of a second Airbus Helicopters H175 aircraft
with the operator. The helicopter is due
to enter service in December 2018 and will be
supporting CHC’s operations in the UK. This
will be LCI’s second aircraft placement with
CHC in recent months and follows the delivery
of the lessor’s first H175 in December 2017,
which was immediately placed in service with
the operator. The Airbus Helicopters H175 is
a new generation 7.8 ton, 16-passenger aircraft,
in the super-medium category, whose
primary mission is to support offshore oil and
gas activities. It is configured with the reliable
and proven Pratt & Whitney PT-6 engine, a
Helionix avionics suite with 4-axis autopilot,
and fully certified to the latest FAR/JAR 29
certification standards.
Embraer has received Type Certificate for
the E190-E2, the first member of the E-Jets
E2 family of commercial aircraft, from the
Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional
de Aviação Civil – ANAC), the FAA
(Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA
(European Aviation Safety Agency). It is the
first time that an aircraft program with the
level of complexity of the E2 has received a
type certificate from three major worldwide
certification authorities simultaneously. It
took just 56 months from program launch
until the E190-E2 was certified. The E190-E2
features new ultra-high bypass ratio engines
and a completely new wing and landing gear.
Compared to the first-generation E190, 75%
of the aircraft systems are new. The flight test
program comprised four prototype aircraft
which were subjected to rigorous testing.
Metro Aviation has ordered 25 EC145e helicopters that it will place into service providing air
medical transport and other aerial services. It is one of the larger commercial helicopter orders
ever booked by the U.S. based company. Metro was the first customer for the lighter weight
and lower cost version of the EC145 when it was launched by Airbus Helicopters in 2015, placing
an initial order for six aircraft. The helicopter was launched initially only for Visual Flight
Rules (VFR) use and Metro put it to work in air medical transport and utility markets. Since that
time Metro, working with Genesis Aerosystems has developed and received Federal Aviation
Administration Supplemental Type Certificates for a VFR electronic flight instrument system
(EFIS) and an autopilot and stability augmentation system for the EC145e. Instrument Flight
Rules (IFR) certification is expected this year. Airbus Helicopters will produce the EC145e at its
final assembly plant in Columbus, Miss. where it also produces the UH-72A Lakota for the U.S.
Army and the H125 commercial helicopter for the North American market. Metro will customize
the aircraft for individual customers at its completion center in Shreveport, La.
The first Ultra Long Range version of the A350 XWB has rolled out of the Airbus final assembly
line in Toulouse. The latest variant of the A350 XWB Family will enter service with launch
operator Singapore Airlines later this year. Altogether, Singapore Airlines has ordered seven
A350-900 Ultra Long Range aircraft, which it will use on non-stop flights between Singapore
and the US, including the world’s longest commercial service between Singapore and New
York. Following completion of the airframe assembly, the first aircraft has now moved to an
outdoor station where it will undergo extensive ground tests, prior to installation of its Rolls-
Royce Trent XWB engines. The aircraft will then embark on a short flight test program to certify
the changes over the standard A350-900 that will bring the additional range capability. These
include a modified fuel system that increases fuel carrying capacity by 24,000 liters, without
the need for additional fuel tanks. The test phase will also measure enhanced performance derived
from aerodynamic improvements, including extended winglets. With a maximum takeoff
weight (MTOW) of 280 tons, the A350 XWB Ultra Long Range is capable of flying up to 9,700
nautical miles or over 20 hours non-stop.
According to Reuters, the White House has confirmed that an agreement has been reached
with Boeing for two new 747-8 jets to replace the current Air Force One planes, two Boeing
VC-25As which began operations back in 1990. According to Deputy Press Secretary Hogan
Gidley, “President Trump has reached an informal deal with Boeing on a fixed-price contract
for the new Air Force One Program.”
Gidley also advised that the deal struck between President Trump and Boeing would save the
taxpayer US$1.4 billion. Previously, President Trump had tweeted that the costs to build the
two new replacements was too high and that the federal government should “Cancel order!”
In a news release issued by Boeing, the company stated: “President Trump negotiated a good
deal on behalf of the American people.” The Boeing 747-8s will act as an airborne White House
able to fly in worst-case security scenarios, such as nuclear war, and they will be modified with
military avionics, advanced communications and a self-defense system.

Air Guilin
DAE Capital has delivered an Airbus A320-200
aircraft to new customer, Air Guilin on March
1. The delivery took place at the Airbus delivery
centre in Toulouse, France. DAE has agreed
to lease two new Airbus A320 family aircraft to
the Chinese airline, based at Guilin Liangjiang
airport in Guanxi Autonomous Region. The aircraft
will come equipped with CFM 56-5B4/3
PIP engines. The second aircraft will be delivered
in March and both planes are part of a
direct order DAE has with Airbus. This latest
addition to the Air Guilin A320 family fleet
will assist the carrier as it looks to capitalize
on China’s increasing domestic demand for leisure
and business air travel. Air Guilin currently
operates Airbus A319 and A320 airplanes
and expects to significantly increase its fleet
size by the end of 2018.
Icelandair takes delivery of first 737 MAX
airplane
The new Falcon 6X
Photo: Dassault
Dassault Aviation, the French aerospace company, has announced the launch of the new
Falcon 6X luxury business jet, while also announcing that it has scrapped its Falcon 5X
model, according to Reuters. The Falcon 6X will have the same fuselage cross-section as
the Falcon 5X but will instead be powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW800 engines. The Falcon
6X has a slightly longer range than that of the 5X – 5,500nm as opposed to 5,200nm,
which equates to the jet being able to fly non-stop between New York and Moscow, San
Francisco or Paris and Beijing, and London or Geneva and Los Angeles at a cruising speed
of Mach 0.85. the PurePower PW800 engines offer the highest efficiency, reliability and
maintainability in the 10,000-20,000lb class and have accumulated over 20,000 hours of
testing to date. The Falcon 6X cabin is six feet, six inches (1.98 m) high and 8 feet 6 inches
(2.58 m) wide — the highest and widest cross section in a purpose-built business jet – and
is nearly 40 feet 8 inches (12.3 m) long. The cabin can accommodate 16 passengers in
three distinct lounge areas. Originally, the Falcon 5X was going to be a direct competitor to
the large-cabin Gulfstream jets, so it’s cancellation has come as a surprise. However, Dassault
has struggled with timings on the release of this jet, in particular suffering a threeyear
delay in delivery of the Silvercrest engine from Safran, the world-leader in aircraft
engines, headquartered in Courcoronnes, France.
Icelandair has taken delivery of the airline’s
first 737 MAX airplane as the carrier seeks
to grow and renew its fleet and enhance
its trans-Atlantic operations. The MAX, a
new and improved version of Boeing’s 737
airplane, will join Icelandair’s fleet of Boeing
757 and 767 jets in serving destinations
throughout North America and Europe. Icelandair
placed an order for 16 737 MAXs in
2013, including the MAX 8 and larger MAX 9
models. Both airplanes offer airlines exceptional
performance with lower seat-mile costs
and more range (up to 3,515 nautical miles or
6,510 kilometers) to open new routes profitably.
The 737 MAX family is powered by CFM
International LEAP-1B engines and includes
design updates such as Boeing’s Advanced
Technology winglet that will result in less drag
and further optimize the 737 MAX performance,
especially on longer-range missions.
Together, these improvements reduce fuel
use and CO2 emissions by at least 14% compared
to today’s Next-Generation 737s – and
by 20% more than the single-aisle airplanes
they replace.

StandardAero and Papillon Airways sign
MOU for 40 Crash-Resistant Fuel tanks
StandardAero and Papillon Airways have
signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) for 40 retrofittable Crash-Resistant
Fuel Tanks (CRFTs) in support of Papillon
Grand Canyon Helicopters’ fleet of Airbus
AS350 B3 and EC130 B4 tour aircraft. Installation
of the first CRFT will take place this April.
“Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters has made
the commitment to lead our industry by retrofitting
our tour fleet with recently FAA-certified
crash resistant fuel systems,” says Lon
Halvorson, owner and Executive Vice President,
Papillon Airways.
The CRFT has been developed by StandardAero
(formerly Vector Aerospace) and Robertson
Fuel Systems as a direct replacement
for all AS350 models, including the AS350
C, AS350 D/D1, AS350 B/B1/B2/BA/B3 and
AS350 B3e (H125), as well as for the EC130
B4. The tank’s unique design features a robust
crash-resistant fuel bladder, offering the same
capacity as the legacy fuel cell and uses several
innovations including magnetic field sensor
fuel gauging technology and vent system rollover
protection. The CRFT is compliant with
the latest FAR Part 27.952 fuel system crash
resistance requirements, even when used in
combination with a cargo swing.
Public and regulatory focus on enhanced helicopter
safety has continued to grow since the
CRFT was first unveiled in 2015. The FAA Reauthorization
Act now includes an amendment
requiring the FAA to make helicopter owners
aware of fuel system retrofits and to urge them
to install retrofits “as soon as practicable.”
fleet of Q400 NGs, three of which are operating on the AOC of Qazaq Air in Kazakhstan,
serving domestic routes in the country. Qazak Air will bring one of its Q400s into Al Bateen
for maintenance in the next few weeks. “We are delighted to have this accreditation to
carry out base maintenance and provide MRO on the Q400NGs,” said Falcon Aviation COO
Captain Raman Oberoi. Falcon Aviation’s fixed wing and rotary wing MRO at Bateen Airport
already holds capabilities for Embraer and Gulfstream Business Jets; the Pilatus PC-12, Airbus
Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters and Bell Helicopters. Falcon Aviation is also marking
three successful years’ flying on its fixed-wing oil and gas operations with daily flight services
operated by two Q400NGs - between Al Bateen and Das Island, and between Al Bateen and
Zirku Island. The service, which started in September 2015 to serve demand from the Abu
Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has grown from an initial 61,000 passengers in its first
year to 187,000 in 2016, increasing to 215,000 passengers during 2017. Today, the route
supports 12 flights daily, back and forth, carrying 700 passengers a day
800 and RJ85 aircraft. Focused smart decision
making to ensure aircraft dispatch reliability
requires an open mind and success with consignment
value of inventory, manage scrappage, and coordinate
repairs for its airline customers.
Baines Simmons and Frazer-Nash Consultancy
awarded four-year STEP contract by
the Ministry of Defence
Baines Simmons, part of the Air Partner group, has
been awarded the contract for the Safety Training
for Error Prevention (STEP) program by the
Ministry of Defence (MOD), in partnership with
engineering specialist Frazer-Nash Consultancy.
The contract is worth between £2m (US2.7m) and
£3m (US$4.1m) and will span the next four years,
with the option of two one-year extensions. The
contract will also serve as a framework agreement
to support and facilitate safety-related subprojects
across the MOD. STEP is the successor to
the Defence Aviation Error Management System
(DAEMS) contracts, which were technical support
initiatives designed to assist cultural change and
facilitate the establishment of an effective Safety
Management System (SMS) across the Defence
Aviation Environment (DAE).
Baines Simmons and Frazer-Nash will provide support
within the STEP program to further embed
Error Management (EM) and to support the progression
towards the next stage of safety maturity,
as an effective SMS is developed across the DAE.
With the formation of the Defence Safety Agency
(DSA), there is the potential opportunity for STEP
to deliver a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to identify
emerging training requirements across the other
MOD regulatory domains and develop appropriate
training and technical support solutions.
Air Astana, the national carrier of Kazakhstan
will start non-stop flights from London Heathrow
(LHR) to Astana, effective June 1.
Passengers flying direct with Air Astana will benefit
from seamless immediate connections to Kazakhstan’s
second city, Almaty, and excellent onwards
connections via the airline’s domestic and
international network. From Astana, passengers
can benefit from convenient international connections
to Urumqi, northwest China; Delhi, India;
and the Russian cities of Novosibirsk, Omsk,
Tyumen and Yekaterinburg.
“We are delighted to have finally secured daily
flight status on what is such a prestigious and
popular route – the only direct service linking
the UK to Kazakhstan,” said Air Astana CEO and
President Peter Foster. “London has consistently
grown in significance, with both business and
leisure travelers and it comes at an opportune
time too for the airline strategically, as we start
to plan for an IPO listing in both London and
Kazakhstan.”
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has joined forces
with Starburst, a global accelerator focused
on Aerospace and Defense sectors. This innovative
collaboration is expected to be the first step
in realizing IAI’s objectives to become a significant
technological player and strategic partner
for startups in the Aerospace and Defense fields,
by offering technological and business expertise,
technology validation, mentoring and access to
such startups’ potential markets.
With presence in three continents, Starburst
comprises 300 startup companies and 26 companies
in the accelerator, including GE Aviation,
Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Thales,
Airbus and more.
IAI will participate in the election of startups
to the accelerator that meets IAI’s criteria,
and in addition, overseas startups that already
Airbus, Delta, OneWeb, Sprint, and Bharti Airtel (Airtel) have combined resources to create
the Seamless Air Alliance (SAA), which is intended to kick-start a new era of innovation for airlines
on a global basis. Using satellite technology, mobile operators who are members of the alliance
will be able to extend their services to airline cabins, providing high-speed, low-latency
connectivity at normal speeds from the ground to the air, and back again. The result should
be a significant reduction in cost for all involved, while at the same time creating a smooth
and positive user experience. The new alliance is aiming to attract further industry operators
which will further help to eliminate costs that would normally be associated with acquisition,
installation, and operation of data access infrastructure. According to a press release issued by
SAA, this can be achieved by streamlining system integration and certification, providing open
specifications for interoperability, increasing accessibility for passengers, and enabling simple
and integrated billing. “What if the best internet you ever experienced was in the air? Keeping
this goal in mind, together, we will enable an affordable and frictionless experience for passengers
everywhere,” said Greg Wyler, Founder and Executive Chairman of OneWeb. “With the
launch of our first production satellites set for later this year, we’re one step closer to bridging
the global Digital Divide on land and in the air.”
participate in the accelerator will present technologies
selected by IAI according to pre-determined
criteria.
The model will enable IAI to identify innovative
technologies that can contribute to its current
and future growth engines and technological
roadmap and maintain its position as a technological
spearhead, through technical collaboration
and equity investments in the forefront of
Sabre Corporation has come to an agreement
with Hong Kong Airlines to implement Sabre
AirCentre Crew technology, a solution that offers
a range of crew scheduling, management,
services and analytical capabilities. This new
partnership marks a significant collaboration
between Sabre and a fast-growing airline in the
Asia Pacific region.
Increased connectivity between the aircraft,
flight crew, and airline staff represents a tremendous
opportunity for Hong Kong Airlines to optimize
its processes both in the air and on the
ground. Once fully implemented, Sabre’s Crew
Solutions will help reduce controllable delays
by improving productivity related to scheduling,
benefitting both the flight and cabin crew.
The technology encourages a proactive approach
that fosters timely communication between
schedulers and crew members, reduces
costs by minimizing crew overage, and contributes
to increased productivity by better connecting
all touchpoints, promoting better crew
utilization through optimized pairings, scheduling
and tracking. Additionally, the solution drives
improved operational efficiency by providing a
more proactive means of tracking and communicating
Airbus Helicopters, Thales and Helisim have
announced they will join forces to construct a
new, state-of-the-art helicopter pilot and maintenance
crew training center in Texas. The Airbus
Helicopters Training Center in North America
will be located at the headquarters of Airbus
Helicopters in Grand Prairie. Helisim, a joint
venture of Thales and Airbus Helicopters and a
leader in helicopter training, will develop and
the first H145 and H175 Level D simulators in
North America. These Reality H Simulators built
by Thales will enable pilot training for two of
Airbus Helicopters’ newest, most high-tech civil
helicopters which are now entering wide use in
the Americas.
The initial investment is estimated to be about
US$40m and the new facility will have the capacity
for several thousand pilots and maintenance
personnel a year to perform both introductory
and recurrent training. It will be designed for
expansion to allow the future installation of an
H160 simulator once the helicopter model is certified
and production is under way. It will also incorporate
the existing training facilities of Airbus
Helicopters, including its H125/AS350 full flight
simulator and H135/H145 flight training device.
Lufthansa Technik AG develops end-to-end
maintenance concepts tailored to the individual
needs of the customer. Its new product called
Maintwise is available to customers of Lufthansa
Technik as a consulting service. Maintwise allows
Lufthansa Technik to address the individual
aircraft operator’s highly specific circumstances.
In cooperation with the customer’s planning and
engineering experts, the Lufthansa Technik engineers
devise an individual maintenance concept,
which harmonizes the flight plan optimally
with the maintenance program. Depending
on the customer’s objective, attention focuses
here on delivering better aircraft availability or
lower maintenance costs. Further objectives
can include improving planning stability or increasing
flexibility for aircraft deployment. The
customer’s requirements are identified in a first
step. The Lufthansa Technik experts then define
possible optimization criteria. Various concepts
are simulated and evaluated. Based on these investigations,
Lufthansa Technik develops a series
of optimized maintenance concepts from which
the customer chooses the model best suited to
their objectives. The handover of the final concept
to the customer marks the conclusion of
the project. Freya Schmitz, Maintenance Concept
Engineer at Lufthansa Technik, explains: “All
of our customers can benefit from the advantages
of Maintwise. The product offers interesting
competitive advantages for start-up airlines
or airlines with growing fleets or new routes as
well as for operators, whose goal is to reduce the
ground times of their aircraft or reduce maintenance
costs.”
Spirit Airlines and its pilots, represented by the
Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), ratified a new
five-year working agreement on February 28.
Of the 98% of pilots who voted, 70% cast ballots
in favor of the agreement. Spirit Airlines’
agreement with ALPA includes an average 43%
increase in pay rates on date of signing, doubledigit
direct contributions to pilots’ retirement
plans, and US$75m in ratification compensation.
The ratification of this agreement represents
three years of contract negotiations, including
nearly two years at the bargaining table with the
assistance of the NMB.
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines became the
latest major corporations to end marketing ties
that the airline will be ending its contract for
discounted fares for travel to the association’s
annual meeting through Delta’s group travel
NRA remove Delta’s information from its meeting
website. Delta’s decision reflects the airline’s
neutral status in the current national debate
over gun control amid recent school shootings.
Delta said out of respect for its customers and
employees on both sides, it has taken this action
to refrain from entering this debate and focus on
its business. This is not the first time Delta has
