ESSENCE
OF
AFRICA

ABOUT

MODERNIZING THE ANCIENT(TRADITIONAL)
ESSENCE OF AFRICA
The unique and striking adaptations of Africa have been transformed to reflect a new modern collection
that maintains the traditional essence of “Mama Africa” while producing functional and contemporary shapes.
The 45 Degrees furniture collection by Indira Lourenco introduces a modernized African culture
through shapes and patterns that awaken all senses and releases the soul.
Recently launched in New York City, 45 Degrees encompasses seven unique designs.
In mathematics a 45-degree angle splits the right angle in two equal parts
while in nature the 45 degree angle is where balance between the sky and earth are harmonious.
Architects and designers consider 45 degrees to be the area that allows the smooth flow of light and space.
Unlike any collection seen before, 45 Degrees transforms rough patterns into delicate shapes and minimalistic structures,
resulting in contemporary furniture that is elegant,
culturally relevant and functional. 45 Degrees primarily uses a black, gold and white color palette,
playing with marbles, glass, brass, transparency and symmetric/asymmetric geometry
in order to generate a striking relationship between light and shadow, showcasing a personified ideal of grace and beauty.

INSPIRATION

From the momet I first used ctaft materials around my gramother’s house
to make something new and useful, I knew the creative process was in the core
of whom I wanted to become
The magic of having my ideas come to existence in the real world
little did I know the journey that would take me.
Today, as a professional designer, I find my self fulfiling not only inner desire,
but aslo doing juctice to my social responsibility of, as the first
woman in the forefront of sculptural furniture design,
bringing awareness to many issues afflicting women in my
of whom I wanted to become
While many had told me that art is expression and furniture
is functionality and that the two avenues do not intersect,
I held on to the belief that I can bring the two together and,
in doing so, shine a light on the social plea of the disfavored.
I held on to the belief that I can bring the two together and,
in doing so, shine a light on the social plea of the disfavored.
With this mentality I created the Zungueira chair,
reflecting the suffering of the African worker of the
same name and exalting her strength and dignity
Angola has suffered the aftermath of
years of civil war and many quality of life parameters are
very unforgiving for women. I have been fortunate to,
through my art, incite the interest of many to these issues,
which I hope creates a platform upon which change can
be demanded and achieved.
