New Pathways!
Are You Ready For Something New?
Submitted by: George Volz, District Director
This year the district will launch into a
new era. I know that some members
are filled with anxiety. Some are filled
with hope. Some have struggled to
understand our current system and feel that the
new system is more complicated. I am here to tell
you that it will be exactly that. To quote James
Allen, “Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so
you shall become. Your vision is the promise of what
you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of
what you shall at last unveil.”
To the cacophony on this new venture, my feelings
are this--Pathways will change us. I believe
Pathways will help us grasp the vision of being the
best that we can be. A new perspective and a new
centering on the core principles of the visions of
Ralph Smedley. I know that we will grow with this
new opportunity.
Have you attended a Pathways guide visit? If you
missed it, visit with your fellow club members about
the visit, go to the Toastmasters website. Explore
the PATHWAYS tab.
If your club still needs a visit, work with your team
to schedule one soon.
Fellow Toastmasters, I challenge you with this idea.
Dedicate this month to become focused on using
the tools we have and prepare to embrace a new
Pathway. It is exciting times, we have the luxury of
both the old and the dawning of the new. What a
great chance to grow, explore new ideas! Climb to
new heights!
James Allen said, “You will become as small as
your controlling desire; as great as your dominant
aspiration.”
When new ideas come along, I first process them
with my old idea mindset. Then I resist. Eventually
I will adjust. We each carry a personal bias, a
filter, that adjusts the way we see things. This bias,
this paradigm, influences how we react. Our
mindset dictates how our mind will adapt. The time
we spend resisting and rebelling against the new
idea is contra-productive. Why? First and foremost,
new ideas help us grow. Pathways is designed to
help us grow. Second, externalizing the new —
declaring it as “that” prevents us from owning it. As
we dive into Pathways, we will discover that it is our
Pathway, my Pathway. What a great thing! A
transition from “the program” to “my program.”
New Pathways!
New, Yet Familiar
Submitted by: Glenn Williams, Program Quality Director
Your initial Pathways thoughts may be a
combination of hesitation, skepticism,
misinformation, and sometimes fear. I
understand those thoughts.
Pathways is all that you love about Toastmasters, in a
different format. You love the Ice Breaker speech. It did
not go away. You love the DTM as the capstone. This
remains. You wanted mentoring, you have it
prominently featured. All of these things are familiar to
you if you have been in Toastmasters for a long enough
time to have become acquainted with what I just
mentioned.
For the veteran Toastmasters, this provides a whole new
experience to try. You have so many more
competencies that you can learn compared to the older
more limited educational plan we are phasing out of.
The expansion is not final, there may be new additions
that occur over time. If there is a manual that
specializes in something you like that you don’t see yet
in the new program this, too,
could be added in.
What will not be added back
is the Competent Leadership
manual. I know some of you
loved that, but most people
never really explored what
that manual could do for
them. Instead, most of the
leadership skills learned in
them are incorporated into the Pathways program.
You can still do the current educational program until
June 30, 2020. You can finally earn your CC, CL, ACB,
ALS, ACS, ACG, and DTM in what we have now.
You won’t be able to transfer a CC or other designation
into Pathways to continue from there. Your old
designations will still be a part of your name and record,
though. You can transfer unused for credit leadership
roles into the new Pathways. Let us say you were an
Area Director last year but you never submitted it for
credit. This can be applied to your eventual DTM in
Pathways.
I do hope that all Pathways Guides and Ambassadors
have been great facilitators to you. This means listening
and observing you more than just talking. This means
highlighting information in any booklet or PowerPoint,
not dryly going through it word for word.
You take an assessment that allows you to choose one
of three paths or choose another not listed. You can opt
for the materials delivered online. It is a free delivery, it
is within hours not days, and it doesn’t require paper. If
paper is your thing for its tactile nature of holding it, print
the pages of the online option. You can still do that.
Opportunities surround you all the time, you just have to
choose a path and try it. We are here to get you
unstuck.
Before Pathways launches on May 3, 2018, please go to
the Pathways Beyond the Guide breakout session led by
Jacob Lawson at the 2018 District 24 Annual
Conference on April 21 at the Younes Center in
Kearney, Nebraska. Jacob will
have George Marshall by
remote video. District 57
Pathways Chief Ambassador
George Marshall was in the first
district in the world to launch
Pathways. You can get
misinformation dispelled and
restore your comfort level about
what Pathways will mean to
you by attending.
You owe it to yourself to get the facts straight from a
knowledgeable and experienced source, George
Marshall. See what he has to say. You will feel much
better coming out from that session than you did going
in.

New Pathways!
What Path Will You Take?
Submitted by: Linda Wilson, Club Growth Director
It’s almost here! The new
Toastmasters Pathways learning
experience will finally launch in District
24 in early May. What does it mean to
each one of us as Toastmasters?
What are the opportunities?
By now, many of us have heard a presentation by
one of our District 24 Pathways Guides. Some may
have also obtained information through blogs,
webinars, online learning forums, or websites for
districts that are already using Pathways. This
information has highlighted the positive aspects of
the new program and provided some tips to begin
preparing for the transition.
There have been discussions about the improved
features, with five core competencies and 10
dynamic learning paths made up of 60 projects,
with over 300 transferable competencies. The
advantages of individualized learning, convenient
on-line accessibility of resources and projects, and
mastering real-world transferable skills have been
highlighted. There have also been many questions
and concerns.
Yes, there will be major changes, and for many of
us, change isn’t easy. On the other hand, as
Benjamin Franklin so aptly stated, “When you’re
finished changing, you’re finished.”
All of the benefits that drew us to Toastmasters and
continue to keep us as members will remain the
same with Pathways. They remain true to the club
mission and core values envisioned by Ralph
Smedley in 1924 when he first started the program
for the purpose of helping members improve their
communication, public speaking and leadership
skills.
As far as club growth, by reflecting more up-todate,
real-world communication and leadership
scenarios, the new Pathways learning experience
will appeal to potential new clubs, particularly
corporate clubs, as they look to augment their
current training programs. Likewise, Pathways will
offer enhanced benefits as we support all clubs in
membership retention.
As we prepare to embark on this major change with
the potential for new opportunities and growth, this
quote by Charles Darwin comes to mind, “It is not
the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive
but those who can best manage change.”
With the plethora of possibilities provided by
Pathways, one question remains: What path will
you take?
While the current educational program will continue
to be available to club members during the next two
years as we transition to Pathways, the new
program will provide even more opportunities for
club members to learn and grow, to develop
communication and leadership skills. Members may
complete their current goals and embark on a new
exciting journey with Pathways!
Update on Toastmasters Pathways
Submitted by: Kathy Henvey, Chief Ambassador
In March’s Chief Ambassador Update from
Toastmasters International, the following
Pathways information was received.
News on Pathways
rollout this year. Materials will be provided in HTML format,
in English only and will not include the Pathways
assessment or Base Camp. Videos in Base Camp
currently do not support closed captioning; however,
watching them is not necessary to complete Pathways
projects.
Rollout updates
The Pathways rollout continues with regions 1 and 11
scheduled to launch on March 20. Regions 4 and 13
Pathways Guides are in the process of visiting clubs ahead
of the anticipated rollout on May 3; and region 8 and 9 club
visits are already underway before the final rollout on May
15. Our District 24 is in Region 4. Our rollout date was
moved from April 24 to May 3 because transition from the
World Headquarters office in California to the new office in
Colorado occurs the week of April 24.
Adoption report
In the regions where Pathways has launched, district
leaders are reporting that the transition has been much
smoother than anticipated and members are enjoying the
new educational content. As of March 15, in districts where
Pathways has rolled out:
More than 45,772 members have enrolled in
Pathways — representing 29% of the members
where Pathways is available. The usage rate in
districts that were part of the program pilot is 42%.

More than 48,852 paths have been initiated.
99.5% of all users chose an online path instead of
working in printed materials.
Survey Results
Toastmasters International always is eager to hear member
feedback, especially when it comes to their experiences
with Pathways! A recent survey conducted by the World
Headquarters research team found that the majority of
members in regions where Pathways has rolled out are
overwhelmingly satisfied with the program. When asked
what they like most, their top answers included the variety
of choices offered by the paths, being able to access the
program online and the wealth of extra-educational
resources at their disposal.
Common Member Question
Does Pathways offer accessible educational materials for
visually-impaired individuals?
Answer: All Pathways projects and electives soon will be
available for visually-impaired members after the last region
District 24 Double Dozen |5 | April, 2018
Common Chief Ambassador Question
When is the last day to submit an application for an
education award in the traditional education program?
Answer: If the Pathways rollout remains on schedule and
the last phase rolls out in May 2018, then the final day to
submit an application for a traditional education program
award will be June 30, 2020, the end of the 2019-2020
Toastmasters program year.
Members who serve as a club or district leader or as club
coach through June 30, 2020, may receive an exception to
use this as credit toward a traditional education program
award that is also submitted on June 30, 2020. The role
must be the final requirement for the award to receive
recognition and these exceptions will be reviewed on a
case-by-case basis. Please be aware that members who
use the role to complete an award such as ALB or ALS in
the traditional program will not be able to transfer the work
to an award in Pathways.
Members who are seeking a DTM but are unable to
complete all requirements by June 30, 2020 may be better
served by applying their club and district leadership roles to
a Distinguished Toastmaster award in Pathways.
Please email the Education Services team with any
TIME for ELECTION of CLUB
OFFICERS
Submitted by: Karen Watson, District 24 Parliamentarian
To prepare adequately for the election of
Club Officers, follow the timeline below (for
clubs that meet yearly.) This information is
taken from the Club Constitution for
Clubs of Toastmasters International,
Article VI: Officers (Sections 1-8), and Robert’s Rules
of Order Newly Revised.
1. TWO Meetings before Election The Club
President appoints a Nominating Committee at
least two (2) weeks prior to the meeting at which
the election is to take place. The Chair will be
the Immediate Past Club President. Ideally, the
Nominating Committee consists of three people.
2. ONE Meeting before Election The Nominating
Committee presents it’s report at the meeting
preceding the business meeting at which the
election is to take place.
3. At Meeting with Election Elections shall be
held at the first meeting in May in each year.
Following the Report of the Nominating
Committee, further nominations may be made
from the floor. All elections shall be by secret
ballot.
Controversy Over Secret Ballots:
Technically, the bylaws state, “All elections shall be by
secret ballot, unless a secret ballot is dispensed with by
unanimous vote, with a majority vote of all active
individual members present and voting necessary to
elect each officer.” If there is only one candidate for one
officer position, dispensing with the secret ballot seems
a likely way to save time. Yet, there are democratic
reasons why using a secret ballot is preferred. First, any
active member in good standing may serve as an officer.
Second, using a secret ballot allows any member to
‘write-in’ the name of any member (including
themselves) for whom they want to vote. Another way of
saying this is: the right to ‘write-in’ a candidate is taken
away when the secret ballot is ‘dispensed with’.
Appointment of Tellers’ and subsequent Tellers’
Report:
Prior to an election, the President asks for volunteers to
act as tellers who collect the marked ballots and count
them. The first teller appointed is the ‘Head Teller’ who
will read the Tellers’ Report before handing it to the
President. The Tellers’ Report is entered in full in the
minutes as an official record of the organization.
Number of Votes Cast:
Necessary for election: (majority, plurality, etc.)
CANDIDATE’S NAMES
Candidate A
Candidate B
Candidate C
Illegal Votes:
Results of the Election
VOTES
CAST
TERM
The results of the election are read twice; once by the
Head Teller and once by the President. Doing so
ensures that results are correct and accurate. The
President then ‘declares’ those who are elected and
congratulates them.
As District Parliamentarian, I encourage every club to do
elections with secret ballots to learn the procedures - as
time permits in each club circumstances. Doing so
keeps democracy alive. If there are any questions, do
not hesitate to contact me.
Three Social Media Platforms to
It’s now easier than ever to get your club in front of
social media. Social media platforms like Twitter,
Facebook, and LinkedIn are changing how we
communicate and redefining how clubs need to
Taking advantage of these free tools is key in
helping your club to increase public awareness and
week, possibly summarizing our Club meeting,
speaker, or sharing an interesting article but our
tweets are relevant and with purpose, focusing on
leadership or speaking. To date, we have over 133
followers and growing!
LinkedIn:
LinkedIn is the best choice for most people who
use social media for professional purposes. We use
LinkedIn to position ourselves and the club as an
industry thought leader by sharing relevant articles
or links to boost our influence and reputation.
LinkedIn is our newest platform we joined so we
are building our audience with a minimum of one
post per week.
Good practice would be for each club to have a
media strategy, i.e. what to release, where and
when. We encourage our members to share and
like the pages and have added them to our
agendas. Experiment to find out which platforms
work best for you and your club. Social media is
guaranteed to create energy and enthusiasm
among your members and visibility for guests.
How to Submit Items to the District Calendar
Is your club, area, or division hosting a special event or celebrating a special milestone? Would you
like to publicize it on the District 24 calendar for all to see? Here’s how. Send an email to
d24calendar@gmail.com with the following information:

Event Title and purpose
Event Date along with Start and End Time
Event Location with complete street address. If there is a building name, please include that
information too.
Contact name along with an email where questions can be sent. This is important especially if
you want to have RSVPs to prepare material or refreshments.
The email should be sent as far in advance as possible so anyone looking at the calendar will see it.
If you have questions about how to submit an entry to the calendar, you can send them to
d24calendar@gmail.com or prm.d24tm@gmail.com. Let’s fill up the calendar with all the special
events in the coming months!
