Pos<strong>it</strong>ive and Negative Effects of Social<br />
Media<br />
s<br />
ocial Network<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>it</strong>es and application are an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly entw<strong>in</strong>ed part<br />
of our everyday lives. We use them to communicate w<strong>it</strong>h friends and<br />
family all over the globe, to chat w<strong>it</strong>h friends down the hall to decide<br />
where to eat, to network for jobs, and to connect w<strong>it</strong>h others w<strong>it</strong>h similar<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests.<br />
Social media <strong>is</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g rapidly throughout the world. More adults and<br />
teenagers are jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g s<strong>it</strong>es such as Facebook, MySpace, and Tw<strong>it</strong>ter to <strong>in</strong>teract<br />
w<strong>it</strong>h friends, family, and strangers. The <strong>in</strong>troduction of <strong>so</strong>cial media has<br />
changed the world <strong>in</strong> many ways. It affects each <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong> different ways.<br />
Today <strong>it</strong> can be used as a very helpful tool <strong>in</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g a per<strong>so</strong>n’s life, but at the<br />
same time cause such conflicts which can negatively impact a per<strong>so</strong>n. While<br />
there are <strong>so</strong>me negatives as<strong>so</strong>ciated w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>so</strong>cial media, the pos<strong>it</strong>ives <strong>in</strong><br />
communication all around, has made the world stronger and a better place to<br />
live <strong>in</strong>. The advantages of <strong>so</strong>cial media have been <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to observe and<br />
participate <strong>in</strong> for millions of people around the world over the past few years.<br />
People have been able to communicate w<strong>it</strong>h people <strong>in</strong> their local neighborhood<br />
and talk to people <strong>in</strong> other countries at the same time. People have formed<br />
onl<strong>in</strong>e commun<strong>it</strong>ies that allowed them to get support, education, and even<br />
promote and sell products. You can connect w<strong>it</strong>h people from <strong>school</strong> and learn<br />
about news that <strong>is</strong> happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> other parts of the world. If you do not like<br />
talk<strong>in</strong>g on the phone or lack time to meet <strong>in</strong> per<strong>so</strong>n, you can connect via <strong>so</strong>cial<br />
media at any time convenient for you. You al<strong>so</strong> have a l<strong>is</strong>t of contacts<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed for you through the <strong>so</strong>cial media platform you use. But, these<br />
advantages have a downside that ra<strong>is</strong>es ongo<strong>in</strong>g concerns.Desp<strong>it</strong>e the<br />
pos<strong>it</strong>ives, there are many negatives as<strong>so</strong>ciated w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>so</strong>cial media. Us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>so</strong>cial<br />
media can make a per<strong>so</strong>n more vulnerable to predators and cyber bully<strong>in</strong>g. In<br />
th<strong>is</strong> age, “Cyber bull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> qu<strong>it</strong>e common, can occur to any young per<strong>so</strong>n onl<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
and can cause profound psycho<strong>so</strong>cial outcomes <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g depression, anxiety,<br />
severe <strong>is</strong>olation, and tragically suicide.Cyber bully<strong>in</strong>g impacts <strong>so</strong>ciety <strong>in</strong> a<br />
negative way because <strong>it</strong> <strong>is</strong> harm<strong>in</strong>g young teenagers’ m<strong>in</strong>ds. Furthermore,<br />
Social media can al<strong>so</strong> lead to bra<strong>in</strong> d<strong>is</strong>orders and can cause people to have a<br />
hard time <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>it</strong>h people face to face. “Social network<strong>in</strong>g entices people<br />
to spend more time onl<strong>in</strong>e and less time talk<strong>in</strong>g to a per<strong>so</strong>n face to face.<br />

Hadja had lost h<strong>is</strong> donkey. While he was look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>it</strong>, he kept repeat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
“Thank God!”<br />
“Hodja, why are you thank<strong>in</strong>g God all the time?” people asked.<br />
“I am grateful that I was not on the donkey, otherw<strong>is</strong>e I would be lost too.” he<br />
answered.<br />
Hodja had two wives and, because they were jealous of each other they<br />
used to fight qu<strong>it</strong>e often. To put an end to the fight<strong>in</strong>g Hodja gave each one a<br />
blue bead and said “Now don’t tell the other one that I have given you th<strong>is</strong> bead<br />
which <strong>is</strong> a symbol of my love for you.” One day they were fight<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>. They<br />
asked Hodja whom he loved the best. He answered calmly “I love the one who<br />
has the blue bead.” Each wife then thought Hodja loved her the best and they<br />
never bothered him aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />
