Why use blockchain?
Advantages of Blockchain
1. Can’t be controlled by any single entity*
2. Has no single point of failure
*altering any unit of information on the blockchain would mean using
a huge amount of computing power to override the entire network
TAKEAWAY
There are certain issues people
are trying to solve with the
implementation of blockchain,
but we should focus more on
the experience and less on the
technology itself.
ADAM
BLOCKCHAIN DESIGNER
IDEO
“"It's your responsibility to engage in
politics. Your vote is the only way
you can truly exist in this country.”
-Adam
TAKEAWAY
People respond to efforts
which make politics and voting
more fun and approachable.
JIMMY
FOUNDER
BALLOT.FYI
““I am a “super user,” but even I still felt
very uninformed when I was preparing to
vote and thinking about how my vote would
actually effect policy outcomes.”
-Jimmy
TAKEAWAY
Doing thorough and accurate
research for both sides of every
proposition and ballot measure
can take weeks if not months
to do— which means most
people aren’t doing it.
PETER
POLITICAL EDUCATOR
PETERRATES.COM
“You’ve got to convince people, who believe
that their vote doesn’t matter or that the
political process doesn’t care, [to vote].
-Peter
TAKEAWAY
In order for a vote to count in
the state of California, there has
to be a paper trail.
What I Learned
Above all my greatest learning from this project was the sheer magic
of collaboration. We had an absolutely amazing team and we all
worked together to both take advantage of each other’s strengths as
well as help each other up in more challenging issues. I learned that
some of the greatest assets for any team are communication, shared
passion, and the willingness to take the initiative.
I also learned that emerging tech can be difficult to understand and
implement, and as designers it’s not our job to figure how to fix the
more technical problems that may be underlying certain things like
blockchain, however, we can take what’s working already a think
about new ways to use it or make it more accessible to others.
What I Would Do Differently
Our team took a fairly research-heavy approach with this project,
which proved to be an invaluable effort especially since we were
dealing with a new and previously unfamiliar technology, blockchain.
However, the cost of spending so much time on research was that we
didn’t have any time to do any validation or user testing. If we were to
go back and do anything differently I would encourage our team to
get out and validate our concept with voters and test the app on real
users to ensure proper accessibility metrics.
