Aberdeenshire Council’s decision to close Longhaven
School after Easter break comes as a result of the
Council running out of money after spending
hundreds of millions on new schools in the south of
the Shire. There are currently 17 Academies and 150
Primary Schools serving Aberdeenshire. Thus, if
there is deficit in funding, the obvious solution would
be to close some of the smaller Primary Schools.
In the case of Longhaven with a roll of 10-12 pupils it
would seem logical to close the school and hire a
minibus to take the pupils to and from Port Erroll
school two miles away. The Cruden Bay primary is a
new school with a capacity of 200 and a current roll
of 130.
The Longhaven pupils would easily be
accommodated in Port Erroll without any additional
expense accept for the cost of the minibus which is
marginal given the huge annual school transport costs
of the Council. In the meantime, there would be
considerable annual. savings on staff, administration,
heating, lighting, etc to be ploughed back into the education
system.
If this was taking place at Longhaven and the Council
had explained the closure of the school in such a
manner, most would have supported the move to Port
Erroll.
However, the real reason is far more disturbing.
Eighteen months ago Aberdeenshire Council
re-opened a so called ‘mothballed’ school at Strachan
for 2 pupils from one family. At the Education,
Learning and Leisure Committee, Councillors were
told that the Council could not over ride parental
wishes on where to place their children. Despite the
school having been closed, the Council had to find
the money for a teacher, a part-time head and all the
running costs even if only one or two pupils wished
to attend the school. Thus, the primary school had to
be re-opened for two pupils.
Longhaven School is currently in operation with a
roll five times larger than Strachan, yet Strachan was
re-opened while Longhaven is closed.
Pupils and parents in the North of Aberdeenshire are
entitled to the same treatment as those in the South.
Unfortunately, as seen with the Academy to sports
facilities to roads, those resident in the south of the
Shire are far more favoured by the Council.

Appeal following
attempted robbery
in Macduff
Officers are appealing for
information following an attempted
robbery at a takeaway
food premises in Macduff.
Officers were called to Tang's
Chinese Takeaway, Crook
O'Ness St, at around 9.20pm on
Thursday 29 March 2018 after
a man threatened a shop worker
before leaving emptyhanded.
He was described as white,
about 5'8 in height, of slim build, wearing a black
jacket and black trousers and spoke with a local accent.
Detective Sergeant Sam Buchan, of CID for North
Aberdeenshire said: "No one was hurt during this
incident and nothing was taken, however the shop
worker involved was obviously shaken by what
happened.
"If anyone was in the area of Crook O'Ness Street last
night and recalls seeing someone matching the
description of the suspect or knows anything about
the incident, I would ask that they contact us with
information quoting reference 4097 of 29 March."

Maggie’s invites public to get creative
for third annual Kitchen Table Day
Maggie’s Aberdeen is launching the third annual Kitchen
Table Day – a fundraising campaign that invites everyone to
gather around a table to raise money for the charity.
Taking place on April 27, Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day will
see friends, families and colleagues come together around a
kitchen table in imaginative and thoughtful ways to raise
vital funds for the cancer support charity.
The kitchen table is at the heart of Maggie’s Aberdeen as a
place where people gather to talk and share their experiences.
This campaign aims to celebrate this togetherness by
inviting people to participate in their own creative and
original activity around a kitchen table.
Commenting on this year’s launch, Paula Cormack, Centre
Fundraising Manager for Maggie’s Aberdeen said: “We are
thrilled to be launching one of our most exciting and interactive
campaigns of the year. The creativity we’ve heard
about over the last few years, everything from superhero
themed suppers to board game nights, has been fantastic and
we are really looking forward to seeing what all the fundraisers

Since the first Kitchen Table Day in 2016, there has been
over £12,000 raised from fundraisers efforts, with
activities as varied as bake sales, concocting cocktails or

can happen around a kitchen table!

Table Day whenever is best for you. Every penny raised
by Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day activities will go to
providing essential support to those dealing with a cancer

Volunteer and help Scotland's
pets find loving new homes
The Scottish SPCA is appealing to
kind hearted people in Aberdeenshire
to volunteer and help raise
funds for abused, abandoned and
injured pets in Scotland.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity is
urging locals to get involved in its
Rehoming Week, which runs from 7
- 13 May, by joining in with organised
street collections and more.
Graeme Innes, Aberdeenshire Animal
Rescue and Rehoming Centre
manager, said, “Last year our centre
took in and found loving new homes
for 602 neglected, mistreated and
unwanted pets and 2018 is proving
to be just as challenging.
“During Rehoming Week we have
opportunities to fundraise throughout
Scotland. It’s a great opportunity
to spend time with friends, or to
come along and meet new people as
part of our Supporter Groups, and
help make a real difference to pets
in Scotland. Door-to-door fundraising
can be carried out between the
Monday and Friday of Rehoming
Week, while people can hold street
collections in their local communities
on the Saturday.
“You can volunteer with friends, or
join your local supporter group.
Even if someone can only spare an
hour or two, their time and efforts
would be hugely appreciated.
“Giving up your spare time to help
raise funds is an extremely kind
gesture and one which will be of
huge benefit to our work.”

Hard-hitting road safety show seeks new sponsors
A long running road safety show which has helped inform generations of young people across Grampian is looking for sponsors to
help it continue in 2018. Safe Drive Stay Alive has been attended by all senior school pupils in the north-east of Scotland for the last
thirteen years.The hard-hitting stage show features real life testimony from the emergency services who regularly deal with road
collisions and from members of the public whose lives have been affected by road collisions in an extreme and profound way.
It leaves a lasting impression on all who see it, with the intention of cutting the level of death and injury which is seen on local
roads. Tens of thousands of young people about to learn to drive, or who have already passed their test, have benefitted from support
by sponsors over the years.
Nexen Petroleum UK are the only confirmed sponsor of the 2018 show. Nexen has been the main sponsor in previous years, however
to ensure the event can continue this year Safe Drive Stay Alive would like to hear from other community-minded businesses or
individuals.
