Towards Softwarization of Mobile Networks and Content Delivery
Platforms
Today we talked about 5G and its requirements. I did my bachelor thesis related to requirements of 5G so
today’s topic was very familiar to me. This also made the lecture easy to follow since most of the topics
were familiar to me.
A. Lesson learned
Today I learnt about network softwarization which was a new concept for me. It is an overall
transformation trend and the idea is to make the network more flexible and simple by changing the trend
of designing, implementing and deploying NW equipment and components. It can be achieved by SW
programming.
Its main task is to isolate and separate different network slices, how and what type of resource and NF
sharing can be used between NW slices and how to enable multiple services from slices at the same time to
user.
Slicing was another new concept for me. It enables a network operator to provide dedicated virtual
networks with functionality specific to the server or to user over common network infrastructure. So,
slicing allows multiple virtual networks to be created on top of a common shared physical infrastructure.
Network is not always optimal to different services so slicing will be very important in the future. For
example, in 5G, a single physical network will be sliced into multiple virtual networks that can support
different radio access networks (RANS), or different service types running across a single RAN. This will
make 5G more flexible and agile compared to older mobile technologies. There will be more and more
services in the future so this kind of “slicing technology” will be vital to make these services to work.
B. Problems and open issues
There were not many things that I did not understand. EPCaaS Architecture Options was one thing that
went over my head. I tried to google it but without a success. There were a few figures which tried to
explain it but I did not understand the idea of this concept.
C. Relevance
5G will be a huge thing for us. It will increase data rates, decrease latency and bring us more services since
it will be more diverse and it can handle more traffic than technologies that we have now. 5G has also very
important role on my studies since it will be the next “big thing” in communication engineering field. I did
my bachelor thesis about 5G and its physical layer and we have studied 5G technology in our courses so I
am able to apply easily this knowledge to my studies.
