KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITER Take a guess Nature Center hosts Earth Day trivia night April 20 Question: Who loves trivia? If you do, then the Dickinson County Nature Center is offering up a night of entertainment just for you. To celebrate Earth Day, they’ll be hosting a trivia night to test people’s knowledge about this planet we all call home. The Earth Day Celebration Trivia night will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Dickinson County Nature Center. “Through the years, we’ve celebrated Earth Day week in a lot of different ways, and this year we’re excited to try something new with a family-friendly trivia night competition hosted in our new Pollinator Paradise addition at the nature center,” said Kiley Roth, community relations coordinator for the Dickinson County Conservation Board. Teams of two to six people can either register in advance of the Trivia Night or they can register at the event. The doors open at 6 p.m. Trivia Night will include a number of different rounds that will each feature 10 questions. The rounds will have themes such as outdoor recreation, nature photo identification, earth science, Iowa history, sound clip identification and famous environmentalists. “Our trivia night questions will feature a wide variety of topics about nature, the outdoors, science, animals, plants and so much more,” Roth said. “We think testing people’s knowledge about everything in the environment is a great way to celebrate Earth Day, because even if you don’t know the answers you’ll learn a lot and have fun participating.” But don’t worry if you aren’t an eco buff. “Even those who don’t consider themselves environmental experts or conservationists can participate,” Roth said. “We’ll have questions about camping, kayaking, hunting, fishing, birds, Native Americans, weather and so much more. Anyone can participate.” In between the trivia rounds short breaks will be held and environmental education coordinator Bryanna Kuhlman and naturalist Ashley Hansen will lead three kids challenges. The kids will be able to dress the naturalists up as bugs, participate in an animal movement relay and earn some prizes. For those kids who might lose interest in the trivia part of the night, there will be coloring pages and toys available to help keep them entertained. Adults can enjoy beer and wine from West O and Little Swan Lake Winery if they purchase a souvenir glass for $5. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each round throughout the night and to the overall top three teams after all the rounds are finished. Trivia Night will be something different for the Nature Center. “We have never done a trivia night before, and I think all the staff are excited to try something new. We’ve had a lot of fun collecting amazing prizes from generous businesses and putting together all the questions. Some of the questions might stump you, so get ready to test your brain! This will also be the first event that we hold in the new Pollinator Paradise addition to the Dickinson County Nature Center, and we’re looking forward to people getting to see this gorgeous new part of the building and hearing about our plans for the exhibits in the new addition,” Roth said.
