What is hot tapping and line stopping?
Hot tapping which is also commonly known as the wet tapping is a way to tap into water line
when it is under pressure and add an additional line, drain the system or add a Thermo well or
Sensor. You need to place a hot tap service saddle or sleeve onto the line. Then you need to
ass a valve and test the connection under pressure with a hydrostatic pump. Until the cutter and
the retention pilot are down and are touching the pipe you need to place the hot tap machine on
to the valve which is through a tight packing gland. Afterward then manually drill the pipe or by
using electric or air driven unit cut the hole in the pipe. The retention pipe grabs the cut out
coupon so it does not fall down in the pipe where it might otherwise cause a problem in the line.
Then you can retract the cutter and pilot up into the hot tap machine, close the valve properly
and have completed the hot tap.
When you cannot stop the flow in a line and need to do some kind of repair without draining the
system or causing a long shut down of water, a line stop works just works fine. Line stopping
equipment is just like hot tapping as in this you will be tapping into a live line which is under
pressure. In this case, you will remove the hot tap machine and place a line stop machine onto
