Year 3-Survival
Week 6
There was still snow on the ground first thing in the morning.
Luckily the children were used to dressing
for the cold and had even started to look
at the weather forecast.
It was easy to see what animals had been moving around.
We saw a lot of fox prints and
learnt how to distinguish them from
cat footprints. We saw lots of fox
footprints, which brought up the
discussion as to whether there were
hundreds of foxes on the site or a
few foxes that had been moving
around their territory.
Here you can see that a bird
landed on one of our seats
had a pooh and moved on.
If you want to look up a footprint
to be sure about your
identification, it’s a good idea to
use something as a scale so you
can work out how big the print is.
Squirrel footprints
As this was the last session for a while the children
were set three survival challenges.
1
Make a distress signal to attract help.
HELP seemed like a
good idea, but if a
helicopter travelled from
the wrong direction the
pilot wouldn’t be able to
read ……………..
HELP
2 Light a fire to signal a passing helicopter.
Can you see the helicopter?
The sound came
from a Blue Tooth
speaker inside the
bag!
They all ran to the fire pit as soon as they heard the helicopter.
The teams didn’t give up and luckily sometimes the helicopter flew
in a circle. Each team successfully lit a fire to attract rescuers.
3
The children had to work as a
team to make a knot man.
They had instructions but no
help from grown-ups.
It was great to see so much support
and co-operation in a team.
At the end of a successful session we celebrated
with marshmallows and biscuits.
We reflected on what we had enjoyed about the session and
celebrated our success in the three challenges.
