Fighting Against Breast
Cancer For The Win!
HADCO Limited has a long history with supporting
Breast Cancer Awareness and playing active roles in
this country’s fight against this disease.
This has been highly demonstrated through the company’s affiliation
and involvement in the Scotiabank Foundation’s Women Against Breast
Cancer Walk/Run, as well as financial and moral support of initiatives
by Vitas House Hospice throughout the years. This year was no different
as we proudly donated TTD45,000 each to the Scotiabank Foundation
and Vitas House Hospice.
However this year, the fight truly hit home when a member of staff,
Nadira Dass, Manager Brokerage & Logistics Department for the past
14 years, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. We would like to take
this opportunity to share her story so that others will get more personal
insight into this disease and those who can relate to her experience
can find hope.
On December 2016 at age 47, Nadira was diagnosed with HER2 Positive
(which is the more aggressive type of breast cancer). HER2 positive
breast cancer tends to grow faster and is more likely to spread and
come back. There was no history of breast cancer in her family but
some of her family members on her mother’s side did have some form
of cancer that was discovered after death. When asked how she felt
THE NEWSLETTER OF THE HADCO GROUP OF COMPANIES: ISSUE 32
COVER STORY
when she first received the news, this was her response,
‘I was shocked and just broke down. I just felt tears flowing
and could not stop crying for a full 10 minutes. It was a
profoundly earth shattering moment in my life when I heard
the word CANCER, I immediately felt like it was a death
sentence. One of my first thoughts was that I have not lived
enough of my life. I was thinking that having gone through
so many different challenges in my life I now had to add this.
I was depressed about this news for about four days. For most
people the negative side of life tends to take root easily. I
didn’t want to think that my case was hopeless so I decided
on day five after my diagnosis that God and I will handle
whatever was in store. So far we are doing great.’
She shared her diagnosis firstly with her family members, which
was extremely difficult and then with her co-workers. She
said this of her colleagues, ‘The reactions from most were of
shock, compassion, caring but mostly love and concern about
my well-being and support with my recovery. All the managers
and my staff in HADCO rallied with me and I am also very
thankful for that.’
Nadira wanted to share her story with all of us hoping,
‘It will help persons realize that being diagnosed with cancer
is not the end of physical life but the end of life as I know it
i.e. eating crap food, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes,
etc. Sharing it shows that the outcome could always be
positive, I just have to believe and action the change that is
necessary. I have discovered that I am much stronger than I
thought and there is hope inside that gives me the desire to
get up every day to help myself get better mentally, physically,
emotionally and spiritually. Each day I wake with my positive
disposition fully in place and continue to ask the God of my
understanding to help me to get through the day.’
The HADCO team at Scotiabank Foundation’s
Women Against Breast Cancer Walk/Run
Participants of the Walk/Run sign the
Yoplait Remembrance Mural at POS
At the starting line of the Walk/Run
Nadira wanted to impart the following message:
• Do not take life for granted
• Find your spiritual centre and keep in constant
touch with the God of your understanding
• Take care of your mind and body
• Cultivate positive relationships with all those you
come into contact with
• Do not wait until something bad happens to
have regrets
• And like me, be able to live in the midst of your
disease with continued positivity
The management of HADCO Group thanks Nadira
for sharing her story and it is hoped that this is a true
inspiration for those of you and/or your loved ones
who continue to battle with this disease. HADCO
Group is committed to this fight with all of you.
OUR PEOPLE
THE NEWSLETTER OF THE HADCO GROUP OF COMPANIES: ISSUE 32
HADCO Group’s co-Chief Executive Officers
Appreciating
the Importance
of Long-Term
Employees
Finding good staff and keeping them is a
great achievement for any company and it
is worth the effort.
There are many benefits to having long-term employees,
which are:
1. Maintaining a solid knowledge base,
2. Having them as an invaluable support system for new
employees,
3. It reflects a stable work environment and aids in
building employee morale,
4. More cost effective as high turnover can cost companies
a lot of money in the long run, and
5. It causes greater company loyalty.
These benefits provide good intellectual justifications
for retaining long-term employees. Additionally, in terms
of emotional intelligence at the workplace, such staff
retention is mainly achieved due to compassion,
understanding and rapport with others to achieve a more
harmonious and happy work environment.
Overall, the HADCO Group and its employees strive for
this and seem to be doing well, if their track record is
any indication. In 2017, the annual Employee Appreciation
Awards celebrated 51 persons with 5 years’ service and
44 people with either 10 years, 15 years, 20 years or 25
years of service.
The HADCO Group is proud of these employees and
encourages them and other junior staff to continue their
good work. We wish them many more years of fulfilling
service to the HADCO Group as part of its family.
Etienne Charles defies easy musical
He has been hailed by the New York Times as “an auteur”
In support of Me
-Time for Moms
Everyone at some point needs a little ‘me’
time, especially mothers who have one of
the toughest jobs in the world.
With that in mind, MOMS Connect TT, an organization
designed to connect, support, inspire and empower
mothers, held the first ME-TIME 2017 all-inclusive event on
Sunday 6th August at The Anchorage, Chaguaramas. At
the event, moms got to be part of workshops, live tutorials
and get makeup touch-ups, samples, giveaways and feast
on hors d’oeuvres, wine, cocktails, beverages, and desserts.
When it came to making sure the moms were well-fed,
HADCO’s brands were on-site to help.
Motts was one of the sponsors at the event which catered
to the moms. With a sampling station like no other, all
guests got to try out some great homemade goodies
namely, pancakes, muffins, cookies and smoothies all of
which were made from recipes using Mott’s apple sauce
and Mott’s apple juice products. In addition, patrons got
to take home apple sauce tubs in their swag bags for
themselves and their kids to try, so they could definitely
‘start strong with Mott’s’!
Häagen-Dazs and Yoplait were also honoured to be a part
of the event. Häagen-Dazs’ promotional staff served the
event’s premier decadent dessert which was a big hit, and
Yoplait had samples of one of its newest innovations,
Yoplait Custard Yogurts. Made with whole milk, a minimal
ingredients list (only 6-8 ingredients), a silky smooth texture
and with an amazing taste, these yogurts were definitely
seen as a justifiable treat among patrons at ME-TIME.
This event achieved its objective of creating a one-day
getaway for moms, where they were able to relax and
enjoy an evening of fun, food and drinks. HADCO was glad
to be a part of this event and add our support.
The innovative Mott’s booth was
in full effect with its offering of
delicious goodies made from
What Yuh Know
about Yoplait
Greek 100 Protein
The Yoplait Greek 100 Protein Campaign
started on the basis that despite our country’s
current recession, its citizens should still
lead a healthy lifestyle via wise diet choices.
In keeping with this stance, over a two-month period,
HADCO’s promotional teams visited supermarkets and
outdoor activity areas to advise and educate the public
on the benefits of Yoplait Greek 100 Protein Yogurt. The
campaign was also promoted through radio spots aired
on the Trinidad & Tobago Radio Network (TTRN).
The radio network and the campaign team also organized
Yoplait Greek 100 Protein samples for persons on the
network’s OJO Joyride, which is a free afternoon bus ride
home that is a goodwill project catered to TTRN’s listeners
and the public. This unique marketing strategy had many
persons enjoying our yogurt on their commute back
home and even sharing their positive feedback about
the product live on air.
One of the biggest highlights of the campaign was the
partnering with Mr. Daniel Loveless, the host of the social
media hit show “What Yuh Know”. Daniel was a great
complement to the Yoplait promotions at select
supermarkets of Massy Stores - Trincity, Westbees,
PriceClub and Xtra Foods - Arima. He did what he does
best from his show and tested customers’ knowledge on
Yoplait Greek 100 Protein for the chance to win a prize.
This was indeed a fun-filled aspect of the campaign that
kept patrons and subsequent viewers entertained, while
Data centre facilities generally centralise a company’s IT
These facilities are very critical assets for the operations of many businesses,
Ecoimpact Upgrades
At the beginning of 2017, HADCO Group took
over operations of Ecoimpact, which was
originally located at Lot 6B Diamond Vale
Industrial Park, Diego Martin.
It was operating at a maximum capacity of 30,500 gallons for
the processing and export of used vegetable oil. However, with
the move to the new facility to Lot 17 DEFG, Diamond Vale
Industrial Park, Diego Martin in October 2017, Ecoimpact
increased its capacity to 48,500 gallons. This was done due
to the upgrading of the final storage tanks to 3,000 gallons.
Additionally, a new centrifuge was purchased, which allows
Ecoimpact to process up to 1,000 gallons an hour and obtain
a much cleaner end product. The new facility also contains
upgraded offices and a lunch room area for its 15 members of
staff to have a more comfortable work environment.
Ecoimpact’s main focus is the collection and processing of
used vegetable oil which is subsequently sold to foreign
customers as feedstock for the production of biofuel. Its
secondary focus is the recycling of the plastic kegs which they
receive the used vegetable oil in. This occurs via a plastic
shredding machine and the resulting final product can be sold
to local manufacturers, who will use it in the production of
plastic end products.
Export Promotion Mission to Cuba
Adanna Taylor participated in an export promotion mission to Cuba from 19th to 23rd
November 2017 to explore the possibility of synergistic opportunities between Cuban
companies and HADCO Group.
Discussions were held with Cuban importers who were interested
in our locally manufactured ice cream cones from Imanex, and ice
cream from our soon to be launched Creamery Novelties. Operations
for the latter are scheduled to be fully implemented in 2018.
Adanna had the honour of touring the Mariel Special Development
Zone, an industrial zone which presents further opportunities for
HADCO Group as well.
The visit was in fact quite timely as earlier that month the Cuba-
CARICOM Trade Agreement was expanded to grant preferential
access to Cuba for more than 300 items from CARICOM, many of
which are manufactured or distributed by HADCO Group. Cuba’s
many countries as possible in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Employees listen attentively to the presentation on the HADCO Group Foundation
Building the HADCO
Group Foundation
On 22nd August 2017, the HADCO Group
Foundation was launched in dedication of
the late Maria Hadad, a founding member
and pillar of HADCO.
The Foundation is designed and intended to help employees
deal with personal problems that might adversely impact them,
their families, or their communities.
The foundation is funded through generous monthly contributions
from employees, which is used to improve the lives of their
colleagues who are faced with crises. Assistance is generally
given in the event of Natural Disaster, Lifestyle/Chronic Disease,
Distressed Circumstances, Major Illness, Poverty & Deprivation
Relief, and Communities in Dire Need. However, assistance is
not limited to these general categories but will be subject to
evaluation on a case by case basis. The vision of the foundation
is that when you assist an employee in crisis, you change a family
which can change a community. Employees interested in
contributing to the foundation or being assisted by the foundation
should contact the Human Resource Department for more
information and receive the foundation brochure.
During the launch, HADCO’s employees were not only informed
about the foundation but were also invited to take part in fun
interactive games. These games tested and rewarded them for
their knowledge of the foundation as well as for their new pledge
contributions, with special recognition for exceptional
contributions. Overall, it was hoped that the takeaway from the
launch would be that at HADCO, we are more than just employees,
