When and why did you start playing soccer? I started playing soccer when I was really little, my dad was actually my coach when I was 4 or 5. It was a lot of fun, my friends played and my dad was the coach, so I really enjoyed it. I like running and I like to play mid. It’s just a good time to hang out with my friends. What do you like most about soccer? I like the people, because every year I meet new people. What is one thing people don’t know about you? I’m very outgoing but sometimes people think I’m shy. I’m actually very talkative and loud around people I’m comfortable with and my family. What is your favorite sports moment? I think it would be last year. It was my first year on varsity and there was a foul in the box and my coach let me take the penalty kick, and I scored. It was a big moment for me because it was my first varsity goal and it was a penalty kick, so there’s a lot of pressure. If you were a superhero, what superpower would you want? I would want to transport to any other place quickly. What would you do if you won the lottery? I would go shopping. If you could play another sport, what would it be? I wish I could play volleyball, but I’m not tall and I have zero hand-eye coordination. What is your favorite area restaurant? I like The Glen where I go to Noodles and Company because it’s easy. I usually get the Mac and Cheese. What is one thing on your bucket list? I want to go to Australia. It’s so far and at a soccer tournament we played a team from Australia. The game is kind of different to them, I thought it was so cool that they were here. If you could be any animal, which would you choose? The spring brochure for the Glenview Park District came in the mail back then and I just marveled at the amount of class choices and offerings — 88 pages. All printed in beautiful high-quality, glossy covering material (recyclable thank you very much) with programs ranging from 2-year-old tots, to 95 year old grandmas and grandpas. A literal cornucopia of selections. Of course, there was badminton From Page 32 “Golf taught me a lot about how to stay composed under pressure,” she explained. As McClanahan has been doing every spring during her sports career at GBS she will join the tennis team after the badminton season ends. “I think I’m a stronger badminton player but I enjoy both sports,” said Mc- Clanahan. “I started playing badminton seriously my freshman year. I made the usual golf, tennis and sports programs, and descriptions of all of our wonderful facilities. But what caught my particular attention was all the different types of classes offered. Many, by the way, which have names and topics that remind me of my year one college kinesiology textbook. Stuff that sounds really cool, but I have absolutely no idea what they actually are. Following are some specific examples from our aforementioned spring brochure 2018, with occasional snide comments from your friendly column writer. At the ice rink, you can sign up for “Snowplow Sam” class, also “bronze power” class, and don’t forget synchro class, koala bears class, and panda bears class, (what, no lions, and tigers and bears oh my! Class?) The fitness center offerings? Hold on to your saddle here cowboys. How about Aqua Zumba, Flow Yoga, Yin and Yang Yoga, Pilattes Barre, Tabaqua, chisel class, shockwave class, row-tation, WERQ, Zumba gold, Core Express and the always popular BogaFit class. They even have sneakily named a class offering the “Smiley School of Speed.” Nice try kids. I’m sure it is a fine class for improving your speed and fitness but whom are they kidding here, nobody in the gut wrenching workout class is going to being smiling. In martial arts, there is “little ninja“ class offered, which I am sure all grade school recess supervisors are thrilled to hear about. Dance classes feature “winkle star cheer class,” “leaps and turns” improv class and also a Broadway babies class (don’t get me started, another column could be in the works.) For seniors, the offerings include “Balance and Fitness class,” “Sit and be fit class,” Tai Chi class and then there is “forever young” class (comment the varsity my junior year and this year I’m undefeated in conference. “Our team is solid all through the lineup.” Sara Chen started playing tennis before she played badminton and she did both sports during her first two years at GBN but at the start of her junior year she decide to concentrate on badminton and she’s proud of what she and her Spartan teammates accomplished last season. “We won sectionals for the first time in school history and qualified for state,” she said. “My tennis experience kind of helped me as a badminton player. Speed and agility carry over.” Her GBN co-star and doubles partner Rosenbaum hasn’t played any other sports in high school. “I started playing badminton in eighth grade at Northbrook Junior High,” she remembered. “My cousins played at Deerfield and watching them was so cool. I thought: ‘Why not give it a try?’ “In badminton I think the most important thing is staying positive with yourself during the whole deleted by editor).
