lockportlegend.com news the Lockport Legend | April 19, 2018 | 9 Police Reports Police: 20-year-old had marijuana weighing more than 5 grams in car Natalia Kapel, 20, of the 6200 block of Nashville Avenue in Chicago, was given a civil violation for cannabis possession and a warning for speeding by the Lockport Police Department April 7 after being stopped for going 51 mph in a 35 mph zone. Officers detected the odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle, and during a search of the vehicle officers found more than 5 grams of a green, leafy substance that field-tested positive for cannabis, police said. Lockport Police Department April 5 • Sean Thomas, 43, of the 100 block of North Avenue in Lockport, was charged with improper cellphone usage while driving and driving with a suspended license after being stopped for using a cellphone while driving. April 3 • Arely Lopez, 32, of the 2000 block of Belmont Avenue in Joliet, was charged with improper cellphone usage while driving and driving with a suspended license after being stopped for using a cellphone while driving. April 2 • Adrian Sanchez, 29, of the 7500 block of Elmhurst Road in Des Plaines, was charged with speeding and driving without a valid driver’s license after being stopped for going 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. • Dominic Brown, 25, of the 17000 block of Auburn Ridge Drive in Lockport, was charged with driving with improper lighting and driving with a suspended license after being stopped for driving without head lights or tail lights. FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT Annual Spring Gala celebrates 10th year supporting library The Friends of the Library will celebrate its milestone year of the Spring Gala and Fundraiser in style. The annual event, which is to take place from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the New Lenox Public Library, 120 Veterans Parkway, will have a more elegant look than years prior, as it will have a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” theme to it, contrary to last year’s event that was tailored to Harry Potter. The fundraiser has a different look every year. Amy Hollis, head of adult services at the New Lenox Public Library, said to expect to see Tiffany & Co. boxes and a lot of blue around the library as part of the theme. Even the event’s signature martini, called “Moon River,” will be blue. Featured entertainment at the Spring Gala is to be a caricature artist, tarot card reader, photo booth and music. And throughout the event, guests can try their luck in the silent auction, prize raffles and the wine raffle. All the money raised at the event, which Hollis said generally is $6,000- $8,000, goes right back to the library to help enhance the resources it offers to the community. “The Friends help us out so much,” Hollis said. “They do a lot with the donations that they get and money that they raise. FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE Orland Park woman, 89, dies in house fire An 89-year-old Orland Park woman died following a house fire April 6 in the 7300 block of Paradise Lane. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the home’s kitchen, according to a press release issued April 10 by the Orland Fire Protection District. The woman was identified by fire officials as Margaret Keane. She was found in the kitchen with severe burns, according to the press release. Paramedics reportedly treated her and transported her to Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights. She later was taken to Loyola Medicine’s Burn Center by ambulance. Orland Fire spokesperson Ray Hanania said the cause of the fire was a meal Keane was cooking, but beyond that it was still under investigation as of April 10. “The initial investigation suggests her clothes caught on fire while she was cooking, possibly leaning over the stove,” Hanania wrote. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the causes of death as complications of thermal injuries, kitchen fire and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, citing the manner as an accident in the April 10 case ledger. She officially was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. April 9 at Loyola. The fire was contained to the kitchen of the home, according to the fire district’s release. In the wake of the fire, the district reminded residents to take caution when cooking. Officials urged residents to refrain from wearing loose clothing and to have a fire extinguisher nearby, as well as to never leave food unattended on the stove. Reporting by Bill Jones, Editor. Lockport Love often provides support to local families throughout the year for a variety of needs, including everything from gas gift cards to a new roof. “We go over and above our nominations,” Ferry said. “We try to help as many people as we can.” To fulfill its mission, Lockport Love relies on fundraisers such as the annual Candlelight Bowl, Ferry said. All of the funds raised from the Candlelight Bowl are to go toward the holiday giving back program, she said. “This is becoming one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” Ferry said. “… We’re counting on a full house this year, because this past Christmas we helped [at minimum] 15 families, and we want to be able to help even more people this Christmas. This is one of our biggest fundraisers, and we’re counting on as much support as we can get.” Those who are unable to attend the event and would like to contribute or make additional donations can, as Lockport Love accepts donations year-round, whether money, gift cards, raffle baskets or services.
