It boasts a large, airy gym, a roof lined with solar panels, and a living wall of plants, among other dazzling features. The new building is progressive in almost every sense — and for its community, that’s a good thing. Even when progress is welcomed, however, it may come at a cost. In this case, the necessary casualty was the evocatively named school’s old building, which had served the students of Northfield since 1930. That structure was finally demolished in 2017 shortly before the new building opened for the 2017/2018 school year. Yet, for countless Sunset Ridge students, alumni, parents, faculty and administrators, the memories of the old building will live on. Those memories may find an aid in filmmaker Robert Mazur’s new documentary, which chronicles the old Sunset Ridge building’s final days. The documentary was screened April 11 in the new building’s theater, which still has the theatrical equivalent of a new-car smell. Mazur, a Sunset Ridge parent, documented the school’s transition with some help from his wife, Izabela. She photographed the old building’s murals and, after stitching them together using Adobe Photoshop, printed them on an acrylic surface that now decorates the new building’s Hall of Fame. Mazur said being a district parent made it easier for him to work with faculty and students during the school day. However, both Mazur and Ivy Sukenik, principal of Sunset Ridge, emphasized that Mazur focused on his professional role rather than his personal relationships during filming. “When I came in, I really just focused on the production,” Mazur said. “I knew what I had to do. There’s a lot of different angles to film. I had to think about the lighting, the sound — I was strictly here to film this documentary, and the Robert Mazur, a Northfield resident and Sunset Ridge parent, interviews students about their reaction of a new school last May for his documentary about the project.
