SOUND CHECK The Barkley Sounds
BAND MEMBERS:
Vocals & Guitar: Maxwell Cranford; Keyboard & Vocals: Ian Shu; Drums: Andy Keeling; Guitar: Jeff Lee; Bass: Thomas Trauttmansdorff
The Barkley Sounds are a band of
Canadians from all over the country
who came together in the small
town of Ucluelet. They have been playing
together for almost four years bringing out
many talented musicians to the west coast
to promote the amazing music scene on the
island.
The Barkley Sounds music is strongly
influenced from the classic Rock n Roll of
the 60's and 70's as well as the new wave of
garage rock and psychedelic music coming
out today. Add in a pinch of everything
weird and you will get any idea of what they
are going for.
Their music can be described as fuzzed out
garage rock psychedelia and their mission is
to blow your mind. Dancing is encouraged
at all of their shows.•
Harold Sadler
Ukeedaze: When did you move to the
coast? What brought you here and what
made you stay?
Harold: came here with my Mom (Ruth),
Dad (Jim) and my brother and sister back
in the winter of 1967 when I was nearly 5.
We lived outside of Tofino at “Wit’s End”
at first, and then at the duplex that used to
be at the corner of 4th and Campbell. My
Dad had been here to compete in a surf
contest in ’66 and fell in love with the place.
He met Jack Walters when he was back in
Victoria and Jack needed someone to build
a store (which is now LA Grocery) for
him out here so Dad took the job and we
moved out. I helped him put the rocks up
on the wall of what is now the gift shop.
Once we were here there was no way we
were going anywhere else. There was lots
of work for my Dad and more importantly
lots of surf! As far as Dad was concerned
this was a “little taste of heaven”. I tend to
agree with him now. Way back then I was a
bit bummed that there wasn’t much in the
way of television reception and there were
no movie theatres or circuses.
Ukeedaze: When and how did you start
creating art?
Harold: I started drawing very young,
probably by the time I was 10. I did mostly
pencil sketches but I remember trying
to paint with water colours and I used
some pastels as well. My Dad was very
encouraging as he had always liked to draw
and there are quite a few artistic types in our
family. Once I got into high school I had a
great art teacher who gave me some good
basics and then let me do my own thing.
Basically that meant painting a lot of surfers
and waves. She had loads of patience! I
also had a good family friend, Rick Charles,
who lived here for decades and is now in
Victoria. He is an incredibly accomplished
and gifted artist and would be over at our
house a lot so he kindly gave me lots of
good advice and instruction as well. I first
tried water colours, but I got frustrated
as I couldn’t correct mistakes and I found
that maddening so I switched to acrylics. I
painted with those for three years or so and
then my art teacher suggested I try oils. As
soon as I tried those I gave all my acrylics to
my Mom for her Sunday School class and I
have used oils ever since.
Ukeedaze: What inspires you?
Harold: Wow, painting-wise pretty much
everything I see. I love the big panoramas
of ocean, sky and land. That whole west
coast “end of the road” kind of thing. I
find the colours out here really amazing,
even under subdued lighting. The greens are
greener than anywhere else I have ever seen
and that winter blue of the ocean on a clean
offshore day is breathtaking, not to mention
the sunsets and the crazy storms. I also like
the character I see in the faces of the folks
around me. I am hoping to tackle a few
people-centered paintings soon.
Ukeedaze: What medium do you use?
Harold: Oil on canvas board. I am just
starting to experiment with masonite board.
Ukeedaze: What is your favorite thing about
living in this area?
Harold: Ya gotta ask? Actually my favorite
thing is that the people I love are all here.
My Wife and boys, Mom, brother, cousins,
Uncles and Aunts plus all my good friends
that I have known for decades. Without
those people and their love and support this
wouldn’t be home.
Ukeedaze: If someone wants to view or
purchase your art, where can they go?
Harold: I will probably get a website up
at some point, but for now folks can
see the latest that I have done on the
PRAS website and they can contact me at
summerhilltofino@gmail.com.
Red Tail Hawk
Photo: Katlyn Durocher
The most common hawk on Coastal Vancouver Island,
the red tailed hawk, has a range that covers all of North
America extending from Alaska to Panama. They have
been known to aggressively defend their territories and nesting
areas and will even chase off other birds of prey. Identified by
their rounded wings, wide tail, dark brown back, and pale streaked
underside with reddish brown tail, red tails weigh between 0.7 - 1.5
kg, are 45 - 60 cm in length and have a wing span between 110 - 145
cm. Like many raptors, red tail females are larger than their male
counterparts by up to 30 percent.
Red tailed hawks are typically monogamous and breeding pairs usually
stay together until one of them dies. An opportunistic hunter,
they can often be seen soaring in slow circles searching for their
food, and have even been observed hunting in pairs for their prey
which typically includes: mice and squirrels (rodents can make up to
85% of their diet), small mammals, small birds, reptiles, amphibians
and fish. In the spring, sexually mature mating pairs build a large
nest together out of sticks, bark and foliage which they typically reuse
and repair over the years. Nests are usually located high up with
a good view of the surrounding area. In March to April breeding
pairs lay a clutch of 1 to 5 eggs which are incubated primarily by
the female. After hatching, the mother takes primary care over the
young during the nestling period while the male hunts for food for
the group. Young hawks leave the nest at around 4 months of age
and are sexually mature between 2 and 3 years of age.
Currently the red tailed hawk is classified as least concerned by
the ICUN (International Union for Conservation of Nature
and Natural Resources), meaning its breeding population is at a
sustainable number and not at risk. However, the biggest threat to
their survival is ingesting mice that have been poisoned. Because
rodents make up such a large portion of their diet they can
unknowingly expose themselves to high levels of toxins. One way
to protect red tailed hawks is to not use poisons to deal with rodent
problems but instead use traps. This can help prevent red tailed
hawks or other birds of prey from being unintentionally poisoned
and help preserve their current populations.•
