Featured Artist
Rebekka Lim
Ukeedaze: When did you move to Ucluelet?
What brought you here and what made you
stay?
Rebekka: We moved here the winter of
2006. Neither Rick or I had even been to
the West Coast since we were kids. Rick's
parents wanted to buy a mechanic shop in
Ukee and they wanted us to help. So we sold
the house, the car, all the wedding presents
and furniture, loaded up a few items on a
trailer and drove our truck out to Ucluelet
with two babies in the back seat.
Ukeedaze: When and how did you start
creating art?
Rebekka: The first winter was so wet it
was hard to imagine staying here. But the
ocean and the peacefulness and solitude out
here made us want to stay. It gets harder
and harder to leave this town. It's like the
Hotel California. I'm pretty sure I was born
creative. I built rafts, furniture, and airplanes
when I was a kid. They always broke but I
never quit trying.
Ukeedaze: What medium do you use?
Rebekka: I love glass work, mosaics, wood
working, re-purposing, metal working,
sculpture, quilting. But my most common
medium is definitely painting with acrylic. I
love painting everything. Literally.
Ukeedaze: What inspires you?
Rebekka: Gardening inspires me. Old broken
things inspire me. Of course the beach
inspires me and under the water is the most
inspiring of all. I never get tired of re-creating
the animals that move in the water.
Ukeedaze: What is your favourite thing
about living in Ucluelet?
Rebekka: I love the fog. I love sitting in the
fog, walking in the fog. I love watching it
roll in off the water after a warm afternoon.
Ukeedaze: A business owner, mother, and
artist, what is your secret to managing all of
your responsibilities and continue to thrive?
Rebekka: Lots of exercise. For kids, dogs
and me, being outside makes us happy. It
is easy to manage stress if you are happy in
your home and in your own person. I am
not afraid to take time to paint a picture or
dig in a new garden, or go for a hike, because
it makes me happy and if I am happy,
it is easy for me to take care of everyone
else. And my hubby is very patient and
always supportive!
Ukeedaze: If someone wants to view or
purchase your art, where can they go?
Rebekka: Some of my art is for sale and
displayed at Nurture Day Spa. I also have
bits and pieces of my stuff all over town.
You can find me and a few of my paintings
at the Petro Canada in Ucluelet. Come stop
in to say hello, or visit my website
Canadian Princess Farewell
RETREAT ò RIDE ò RECORD ò RADIO
On Friday September 30th,
hundreds of people lined the
shores of Ucluelet harbour to bid
farewell to the Canadian Princess. Oak Bay
Marine Group sold the Canadian Princess
resort earlier this year, and the vessel was
not included as part of the sale. The ship,
originally named the William J. Stewart was
built in 1932 and was used to map much
of British Columbia's coast. In 1944 it
nearly sunk after striking Ripple Rock near
Campbell River. It was salvaged and was
later sold off to Oak Bay Marine Group.
Oak Bay Marine Group had the ship
retrofitted, and in 1979 it was permanently
moored in Ucluelet to serve as a floating
fishing lodge for tourists. During the 1980's
and 90's it was a popular attraction in town
with locals and visitors alike. In recent years,
age had caught up with the ship and the
cost of retrofitting it to continue to operate
was simply too high to justify; so the only
remaining option was to sell it for scrap. It
was an emotional send off for Ucluelet as
many locals had worked or spent a great
deal of time on the ship, as well as it being
such a visual land mark in the community.
Trumpeter Swan
Featured Wildlife
Once on the brink of extinction, the
Trumpeter Swan is a remarkable
example of nature's resilience and
ability to recover if given the opportunity.
More than a quarter of the estimated 46,000
trumpeter swans in North America winter
in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.
They can often be seen in farmer's fields
in intertidal zones, lakes, and ponds where
they feed on roots, grasses and tubers.
The largest waterfowl on the planet, and
regarded as the largest bird in North
America. The trumpeter swan can grow
up to 180 cm in length, weigh up to 13 kg,
and have a wingspan between 185-250 cm.
They are identified by their large stature and
long necks. Adults are all white in colour
with black beaks and salmon coloured
lining around the mouth. A migratory bird,
trumpeter swans summer in Alaska to feed
and breed. They head south during winter
to Vancouver Island and lower mainland of
British Columbia. Arriving in November
they spend the winter in fields and grassy
areas near water. In March they make their
journey back North.
In the past, trumpeter swans were hunted
for their feathers and skin to the point
that there were fewer than 100 left on
earth. In 1933, hunting of trumpeter
swans was outlawed as an effort to bring
the population back from the brink
of extinction. In the 1970's, sightings
became more common and since then the
population has recovered and the birds have
expanded their range throughout Vancouver
Island and the Lower Mainland.
Today, the biggest threat to Trumpeter
Swans is pollution. They are susceptible to
lead poisoning. Like many other birds, they
ingest small stones to aid digestion. The
wetlands they inhabit are often hunting
areas and the lead shot is a bi-product left
behind which is often accidentally eaten by
the swans as they mistake them for stones.
Studies of dead swans in wintering ranges
have found up to a 50 percent mortality
rate due to lead poisoning. As a result of
this hazard, lead shot has been banned in
many areas and clean ups have been done in
key wintering sites.
The Trumpeter Swan is a remarkable
success story in conservation and they are
currently listed by the ICUN (International
Union for Conservation of Nature) as a
species of least concern as their population
has recovered to a healthy number. Stories
like this show us that if humans take action
to protect animals at risk the results can be
very positive and real change can occur.•
Central Westcoast
Forest Society
Central Westcoast Forest Society is a registered charity
focused on ecosystem restoration, enhancement, research
and education. Our mission is to restore damaged
ecosystems, rebuild wildlife populations that are threatened or
endangered and to inspire stewardship reconnecting people with the
environment. Central Westcoast Forest Society (CWFS) is based in
Ucluelet, British Columbia, Canada.
Much of this area was logged between 1950 and 1980, logging
practices at the time were not designed to protect wildlife or fish
habitat. Nearly 70 years later many streams, rivers, and forests have
still not recovered and they lack the necessary characteristics to
support healthy and diverse wildlife populations. In 1995, Central
Westcoast Forest Society was conceived and began to address the
conditions affecting wildlife and wild salmon productivity. Since
that time, Central Westcoast Forest Society restoration crews have
been working to restore the ecological integrity of this beautiful
area one watershed at a time.
CWFS has completed 84 km of habitat restoration on local rivers
and streams, 99 hectares of riparian biodiversity restoration, 249
Photo: Mark Wyatt
Photo: Jeremy Koreski
km of high risk logging road deactivation, planted 44,343 trees,
placed 548 m3 of clean spawning gravel, and raised and invested
over 10 million dollars in habitat restoration. These efforts have led
to a marked increase in wild Pacific salmon and wildlife abundance
in degraded watersheds. Although much work has been done since
CWFS began 21 years ago, there remain many high priority rivers,
streams, forests and roads that have not been restored in Barkley
and Clayoquot Sound.
Want to help? If you would like to participate in a monitoring or
restoration projects, email us at info@clayoquot.org or visit our
website for more information at clayoquot.org.•
