ness there for ten years until 1977. In the
middle decades of the 20th Century the
building was home to various businesses
including thrift store, antiques store, and
junk store. The entire building was sold
to Garland and Myrna McKee on May 31,
1985 for use as a thrift store.
In 1999, Sarah and Bobby Ballentine
purchased the property and began renovations
that consumed nine months to
completion. In June of 2000, the Ballentines
moved Heirlooms and Comforts, a
quilt retail business, into the building.
Heritage Society permission to use the
old jail as a museum. With the help of
volunteers the Central Heritage Society
cleaned and painted the City Hall/Jail for
their rst Christmas Tour in 1994. The
City Hall/Jail was released back to the
Town of Central in 1995.
Built of granite blocks by the Newton
family after 1900, the building was
used rst as a jail for local offenders
and as a city hall. Most of the men who
stayed in the building were from Central
and Clemson and had too much to drink.
Other prisoners were taken to Pickens
County Jail.
In 1994, prior to acquisition of the
Morgan House for use as a museum,
Central City Council gave the Central
Red Caboose
East Main Street
The car that traditionally signals the
end of the train is ttingly displayed as
a memorial to the railroad tradition that
brought so much history to Central. During
Central Revitalization in the late 1980s,
Charles Head, who was working for the
Norfolk Southern was approached and
ask if he could acquire a Southern Railroad
caboose for the Town of Central.
After several attempts, in 1988 the town
was given a Norfolk Southern Caboose
and it was displayed across the road beside
the main tracks at the Labor Day railroad
Festival. While Al Cumbie was mayor in
1990, through the efforts of the Railroad
Festival Committee, Central Town Council
and Norman Canoy the caboose was
put on display in Central at its present position
beside the Rock Station.
