Exercise can ward off depression
Research led by the Black Dog Institute has revealed that even a
small amount of physical activity, as little as one hour each week,
can protect against depression, regardless of age, gender or current
fitness level.
Depression is a serious public health issue with around one
million Australians currently diagnosed.
We also know that up to 20 per cent of the Australian population
doesn’t undertake any regular physical activity, which may
significantly increase their risk of developing depression in their
lifetime.
The Black Dog Institute’s Exercise Your Mood campaign,
April 30 - May 6, aims to change these statistics by encouraging
everyday Australians to improve their mental fitness by taking on
at least one hour of exercise each week.
Though it can be hard to take the first step, one hour is a very
achievable goal and something we’d like to encourage your readers
to build into their weekly routine.
If they are already on track, keep up the good work! Your mental
health will thank you for it. - Professor Helen Christensen,
Cycling in memory of his
soldier grandfather
My name is Anthony Rafter.
I am starting my ride from
the Maryborough RSL because
that’s where my grandfather was
a member and he lived in Maryborough.
So out of respect that’s why
I’m starting from there as my
grandfather fought in WW2 on
the Kokoda Trail.
After there I am heading out
past Kingaroy to Oakey where
I will hopefully be stopping at
the Oakey Air Museum which
played a major part in WW2 in
the maintenance of aircraft for
all that region if all goes to plan
and, if not, it will be the Oakey
RSL.
To find out more details,
please call 131 872 or
I will be meeting there with
Mal McBride from Oakey Beef
with me down the Toowoomba
From there passing Amberley
Ipswich and then on to Mt Coottha
to the Wall of Freedom to lay
After Brisbane it is then on to
Burleigh RSL where we are having
a barbecue on the Saturday
between 11-12 with a gold coin
MP calls on Minister to extend diabetes funding to over 21s
Katter’s Australia Party
Leader and Member for Kennedy
Bob Katter has written
to the Minister for Health
requesting that the funding
for people suffering type 1 or
type 2 diabetes, and can benefit
from Continuous Glucose
Monitoring, be expanded to
include people over age 21.
At present, funding is only
available to eligible people
who are under the age of 21
that are type 1 and type 2 diabetes
patients who would like
better glucose control to improve
the health and quality
of their lives.
But pressure continues
from people older than 21
that desperately could use the
same support.
Mr Katter wrote: “We
understand that many people
live with type 1 diabetes
throughout their adult lives.
“We also understand that
many recognise CGM technology
as the most superior
technology available.
“With secondary alarm capacity,
CGM is lifesaving and
to deny those outside of the
current age bracket an opportunity
to access funding for
this treatment is unfair.
Oakey celebrates the spirit of Anzac
Throughout 2018 communities
across Australia will commemorate
the end of WWI.
Actively encouraged by our
State and Federal Governments,
tributes are taking place as Australians
honour those who were
willing to sacrifice their lives for
our nation a century ago.
Since that war, memorials
have been established throughout
Australia and around the
world.
Honour boards, monuments,
halls and avenues of trees ensure
that those who fought for the
freedoms we enjoy today, will
not be forgotten.
WWI marked the beginning
of the Anzac tradition following
that historic campaign at
Gallipoli on April 25, 1915. In
Australia this date has become
entrenched in our calendar.
In 1916 the first Anzac Day
commemorations were held on
April 25.
The day was marked by a
wide variety of ceremonies
and services across Australia,
a march through London, and
a sports day in the Australian
camp in Egypt.
In London more than 2000
Australian and New Zealand
troops marched through the
streets where a local newspaper
dubbed them “the knights of
Gallipoli.”
Marches were held all over
Australia; in the Sydney march
convoys of cars carried soldiers
wounded on Gallipoli and their
nurses.
In addition to honouring the
lives of those who did not return
from the conflict, for the remaining
years of the war Anzac Day
By April 25 1927, Anzac Day
became recognised as a National
Day of Remembrance throughout
Australia, and a public holiday
was proclaimed.
For Australia, WWI remains
the costliest conflict in regard to
deaths and casualties.
From a population of almost 5
million people, 416,809 men enlisted.
60,000 were killed in action
and 156,000 were wounded.
The war impacted thousands.
In June 1916 the birth of what
is now known as the Returned
and Services League of Australia
resulted.
It was formed by troops returning
from the war to preserve
the spirit of mateship, to honour
the memory of the fallen, and
to help each other whenever required.
To mark the centenary of the
end of WWI, Oakey and District
Arts Council invites local residents
to a community production
entitled Lest We Forget.
It will be presented at 2.30pm
Council will retain yellow recycle bins
Despite Ipswich ending their service
Toowoomba Regional Council
Water and Waste Committee Chair
Cr Nancy Sommerfield has urged
Toowoomba Region residents to
keep faith with their yellow bins.
Cr Sommerfield said that
despite recent reports of Ipswich
City Council ending its recycling
service, this will not be the case for
the Toowoomba Region.
“Recycled waste from
Toowoomba Regional Council
areas continues to be recycled and
is not being put into landfill.
“China’s refusal to take
Australian recycling waste exports
has put huge pressure on the
domestic system. However, at this
point it has not affected our waste
removal contracts.
“Council has been in regular
contact with our domestic waste
contractors since this became an
issue some months ago and at this
point Toowoomba Region will
continue its recycling program as
normal.
Time to talk land use
Toowoomba Regional Council
Mayor Paul Antonio has invited the
State Planning Minister Cameron
Dick to visit and discuss options
for meeting the many opportunities
emerging in the Toowoomba
Region. Cr Antonio said the time
was right to sit down with the
Minister and talk about the unique
growth potential in our region and
the related emerging opportunities.
“Council has already signalled its
desire to renew the current policy
“Kerbside recycling amounts to
more than 11,000 tonnes of material
a year and it would be irresponsible
to take this out of the recycling
program, Cr Sommerfield said.
Cr Sommerfield said TRC was
being proactive about finding
innovative ways to turn our waste
into a beneficial resource.
“Council is currently seeking
expressions of interest from
prospective commercial partners
to develop the gas resource at the
city’s landfill facility.
“The EOI is expected to see
Council partner in a long-term
approach to develop a landfill
energy resource by turning waste
to gas and reducing Council’s
greenhouse emissions.
“Council is determined to
maximise the value of the landfill
generated resources and ensure that
residents continue to recycle, Cr
Sommerfield said.
“My advice to residents is to
continue to recycle responsibly.
settings within its planning scheme
that were originally approved in
2012, Cr Antonio said.
“The time is right to sit down
with the Minister to talk about
opportunities and constraints in
land use policy environment.
“A new Planning Scheme
would help to get the balance right
between the expectations of the
community and the needs of the
development industry,” Cr Antonio
said.
HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - APRIL 24, 2018 - 3
Flood of opposition against proposed
Crows Nest service station
MILES NOLLER REPORTING
The Crows Nest community
thinks it has already had some
success in a campaign against a
proposal to construct a service
station, car wash, shop, and
mechanical workshop, on the flood
plain of Crows Nest Creek.
The 300 or so residents who
attended an information meeting
last week on the issue, were told
that since submissions against the
proposal were lodged by some
Crows Nest residents, Toowoomba
Regional Council has requested
further information from the
applicant on 17 issues.
Crows Nest resident and leader
of the information meeting Graham
Blackman said it appeared the
council was prompted by some
of the information contained in
the public submissions which
highlighted the flood prone nature
of the proposed site.
He briefly spoke about the issues
for which the council has requested
more information. He thought
it could delay a decision on the
application for some months, even
12 months.
Marakech Pty Ltd has applied
to Toowoomba Regional Council
for a material change of use for the
land, bounded by the New England
Highway and Albert Street. It
is between the caravan park
and where the creek crosses the
highway at the southern entrance
to the Crows Nest business district.
The attendance of about 300
people was an indication of the
interest in the matter and Mr
Blackman said he knew of 20
people who were unable to attend
because of other commitments.
Even six of the town’s firemen,
in uniform because they had just
attended a work meeting, were
present for most of the meeting.
Mr Blackman conducted a well
disciplined meeting, avoided most
emotional opinions, concentrating
on the issues on which the council
would consider the application.
However, in his Power
Point presentation was a list
of businesses which might be
economically impacted, and
possible consequential economic
losses to the town.
He noted that the Planning Act
did not allow consideration of
sequential loss or business harm.
It did not require community
consideration, nor did it require
alternative sites to be compared and
assessed.
There were 34 community
submissions listed on the council
website when the submissions
period closed.
Mr Blackman said it was “good
news” that since then, the council
had raised a further 17 issues with
the applicant, and was requesting
an alternative design that did not
rely on extensive filling of the
floodplain.
It also requested amended flood
modelling involving flood depth,
flood velocity and flood duration
for all modelled flood events.
The council said the submitted
flood modelling shows the
proposed rest area (behind the
proposed service station), and the
culvert crossing to the rest area,
were inundated in all modelled
flood events.
The council also wants
information about vehicle and
truck access and exit to Albert
Street and the highway, controlling
potential overnight traveller stays
in the rest area, the sewerage pump
station in Albert Street, possible
contamination of water in the
creek, and then Cressbrook Dam,
and the suitability of the site for
bulk underground fuel tanks.
The council also noted that the
site appeared to be permanently
wet.
“This is clearly visible in aerial
imagery over many years, including
available imagery throughout the
Millennium Drought.
“It is unclear whether the site
functions as a spring or for a
groundwater recharge, or if it has
a more complex relationship with
inflows and outflows,” the council
said in its letter to the applicant.
Experienced residents
tell of flooding
Long term Crows Nest residents,
Keith Andrew, more than 70 years
a resident, and Mervyn Cox, more
than 80 years, have reminded
residents of the wet periods when
the proposed development land was
flooded.
Keith Andrew who lives near the
land, had photos taken during the
2013 flood.
He said the floods of 2011 was
similar, as was the 1974 flood when
there was also a major flood of
Brisbane.
However, he remembers the
1956 flood as the worst of all. He
cannot understand why anyone
would want to build on a flood
plain.
Mervyn Cox, who has lived in
the Crows Nest town and district
for more than 80 years, said he has
seen all the floods in the area.
He asked what would happen to
the proposed development when
we get another wet season.
They do occur when there are
storms every day of the week, he
warned.
Shire
proposed
gardens for
flood land
The Crows Nest Shire is
understood to have proposed
establishing a botanical
garden and recreation area
on the land proposed for a
service station.
The garden idea was
considered about a dozen or
so years ago. But the Shire
Council was unwilling to pay
the asking price for the land
and the idea was dropped.
Mervyn Cox and Keith Andrew, with more than 150 years combined
life experience in Crows Nest and district, claim they have seen the
proposed land covered by flood waters on many occasions.
Water from Charles Street on the eastern side of the New England Highway, pours onto the land
where a service station development is proposed. The picture was taken by Keith Andrew during the
2013 floods.
Organisers of the community meeting about the service station proposal Kay Tyler, Graham Blackman,
and Ivy Bridges. Graham Blackman, a certified practising risk manager, has worked for 25 years with
local authorities in Queensland and New South Wales, including his last three years before retirement
with the Brisbane City Council.
HIGHFIELDS GARDENS CHILD CARE OPEN DAY PICTORIAL
Highfields Gardens Childcare held an open day on Saturday, April 14, with activities throughout
the complex for all ages to experience. The centre provides care for children from six
weeks to 11 years of age.
Finding a home for retired
racing greyhounds
Aleisha Duffy has her face painted by Kayla Seeds, a junior kindy assistant educator with the
centre.
Andrea Rauchle and her family Jake 3, Olivia 8, and Brooke 5, from Kleinton.
Bec Martin with 6-year-old Ryan at the Toowoomba Royal Show.
The Toowoomba Royal show was home for
hundreds of animals with proud owners showing
off their livestock, pets and companions in an array
of events.
When the weekend wrapped up, most of the animals
were lucky enough to be taken back to their
permanent homes and looked after by their owners,
except one.
Ryan is a 6-year-old greyhound, who raced under
the name Stockland Blue, and is currently up
for adoption.
The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission
Greyhound Adoption Program helps retired racing
greyhounds find a suitable home to allow them to
live out the rest of their lives in the best possible
way.
To do this, GAP undertake an intensive behavioural
assessment and health check which
allows them to better match a greyhound to the
specific needs of an adopting family.
Greyhounds adopted through GAP are also allowed
to be without a muzzle in public, after an
act was passed in 2009.
QRIC Animal Welfare Manager Dr Ann Marie
Boyd said their comprehensive assessment allows
them to best match the right greyhound with the
right family.
“Finding the right greyhound for your family
and lifestyle is something that GAP Queensland
takes very seriously,” she said.
“We want you and your greyhound to live happily
ever after, so we take the time to get to know
both our greyhounds and adoptive families to ensure
the best match.
“Our greyhounds are de-sexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped,
and up-to-date with flea and worming
treatments. You will also receive the official GAP
QLD green collar, allowing him/her to be walked
in public without a muzzle in Queensland.”
The cost of adopting a greyhound is only $100
which includes all the medical benefits above.
GAP will also be holding a national adoption
day on Sunday April 29 to help boost awareness
around the program. For more information on the
event visit www.nationalgreyhoundadoptionday.
com.au. To see what dogs are up for adoption go to
Business Happenings
As the end of financial year gets closer
and closer, there is a lot to think about
for small businesses.
Deferring income, making capital
purchases, depreciation schedules, inventory stocktakes,
cashflow impacts – it all adds to the workload at this time of
year.
For our May breakfast, we have arranged for some help. Alex
Taylor from Entire Tax will give us some tips on what to focus
on to ensure that you are well prepared for the EOFY.
Alex has considerable experience in company accounting and
tax across a range of business sizes and types and his business is
Highfields based. Come along to hear some great business tips
which may save you time and money come June 30.
Our April breakfast was an excellent presentation on the
recent advances in solar energy.
The rapid changes in technology and the dropping costs of
production make it difficult to predict what the industry will look
like in 10 or even 5 years’ time.
One thing is for sure. The cost-benefit equation is looking
better all the time and businesses need to consider what the
potential saving could be.
Our thanks to HDBC members, Michael Reiken from Excel
Solar, and Stan Jonsson from Advanced Solar Solutions for their
great advice.
Goombungee-Haden Show
Saturday, April 28, 2018
Whiz-bang action will delight
The 104th annual Goombungee-Haden Show
will be so program-packed, there will be little
time for special effects.
Well, every part of the show will be special
and the entertainment program is set to delight,
with a bit of whiz-bang action.
But president Errol Luck said all the sections
and exhibits are what people want to see.
Goombungee-Haden Show has so many sections
packed with entries.
Indeed, the produce section last year had
many more entries than the Toowoomba Royal
and stewards believe this week’s show could
be even better.
The judge will be experienced leader in grain
and legume processing and marketing, Peter
Brodie, the managing director of pbAgrifood.
Peter Brodie, a Gatton College graduate, was
a founder of the Philp Brodie organisation. He
was heavily involved in the seed and grain industry,
served as President of the Queensland
Agricultural Merchants Association and helped
to establish the North Australian Soybean Industry
Association and Soy Australia, serving
as president on both associations.
Another highly experienced commercial
judge will be in charge of the prime cattle,
commercial pigs and prime lambs.
Pat McMahon from McMahon brothers of
Killarney judges and allocates livestock to
markets every week. He will spend a day at the
show to assess the livestock for local exhibitors.
Yet another with a lifelong experience in livestock
markets will open the show (at 11am).
Trevor Hess of Maclagan is heard regularly on
ABC radio giving reports from a number of
livestock saleyards. His family is involved in
a beef cattle stud.
Entertainment throughout the day will be provided
by Matt Munro, a young singer whose
heritage goes back to the Harvey family of
Kingsthorpe who had the Holstein stud, Rondell.
For those who have not seen the Crack Up
Sisters, and those who have, be prepared to be
cracked-up again at the four sessions throughout
the day.
A new feature will be a carriage obstacle
course demonstration in the main arena. The
Carriage Club has its own course near the show
grounds at Goombungee, but on show day will
set up in the arena to demonstrate horse drawn
carriages, sometimes at speed.
The show features poultry and dogs, pavilions
and chainsaws, tiny tots and fashion parades,
and fireworks and a farmers challenge.
Confronted by an ancestor
Compiled by MAX and PAM Bacon
When we visited South
Australia in October,
2005, a highlight was
dining on the replica of H.M.S.
Buffalo at Glenelg in Adelaide.
Great, Great Grandfather,
Henry Bacon, was 19 when he
arrived in the new colony of
South Australia aboard H.M.S.
Buffalo.
He witnessed the proclamation
of the colony being read by
Governor Hindmarsh and the
British Union being hoisted.
(The British Union flag preceded
the Union Jack)
The date was December 28,
1836. H.M.S.
Buffalo had left England on
July 27, 1836 under the command
of Captain John Hindmarsh
R.N.
The ship took on water at Rio
de Janeiro before the long haul
to Australia.
The Captain was not very
popular because his dogs occasionally
bit the passengers.
Hindmarsh’s naval service
was impeccible having lost an
eye in the Battle of the Nile. He
also captained one of Nelson’s
ships in the Battle of Trafalgar.
As we entered the ship, a notice
caught our eye. It read, Visit
the widow Bacon.
Our curiosity was further
aroused by a queue of children
waiting to look through a peep
hole in a wall of the ship.
Joining the children, we
stooped to learn the secret of
their curiosity.
We were confronted by a skull
supposedly that of Henry Bacon.
Henry had apparently met and
married 20-year-old Mary Findlayson
from Glenelg in Scotland
on the 1836 voyage to Australia.
In 1838 the pretty young redhead
gave Henry a secret medicine
potion which led to his
death. Mary went on to marry
the son of the Mayor of Adelaide
who also met with a mysterious
death in 1842.
Another peep hole revealed
Mary Findlayson still entombed
in hull of the ship.
We were left a little confused
by the news that Henry Bacon
may not have had children before
he died.
Our family should have ended
with his death.
We ran up a set of stairs to
consult the 1836 passenger list.
Mary was not listed, but as
we left the ship, we noticed the
licensee was named Findlayson.
We had the choice of leaving
the ship feeling amused or
abused.
Footnote: In old age when
questioned about the proclamation
of South Australia on
December 28, 1836 Henry Bacon
said that in particular, he
membered the bottles of rum
that were passed out after the
ceremony. In 1898 the Oakey
district welcomed the start of an
influx of settlers from interstate
and New Zealand.
Playful Mexican puppy
Xonja is a 5-monthold
Xoloitzcuintle,
otherwise known
as a Mexican Hairless Dog.
Owner Helen Bright was
showing off Xonja for the
first time at the Toowoomba
Royal Show.
The Xoloitzcuintle, the
national dog of Mexico, is
extremely rare to find in Australia.
Xonja’s mother became
pregnant while living in Norway
and had her babies after
she was moved to Australia.
Upon meeting Xonja it
was clear that she just wanted
to play as much as any
other puppy.
Ergon trials fire proof power poles
Ergon Energy is trialling the
use of two fire-resistant products
on selected power poles in
Central Queensland to determine
their effectiveness in protecting
the infrastructure from bushfires.
Manager Line Standards
Carmelo Noel said the trial
included a paint-on application
and a fabric wrap, both of
which had proven fire-resistant
qualities.
“The purpose of the trial
is to see how effective these
products are when applied to our
power poles in the harsh Central
Queensland environment,” Mr
Noel said.
“We are initially looking at
how well the products remain
attached to our poles, but of
course the real test will come
when they are exposed to a
bushfire.
“They would only have to
prevent a small number of poles
from needing to be replaced as a
result of a bushfire to be a good
investment in high risk areas.”
Mr Noel said 21 poles had
been painted, the wrap applied
to 15 and one pole had both
products applied for the trial.
“These poles are
predominantly in remote
locations where we have
experienced bushfires previously
and are at higher risk of bushfires
in future,” he said.
“The locations include poles
on the Northern Line near
Ogmore, Marlborough and St
Lawrence, on the Mt Morgan
range near Bouldercombe, near
Princhester station and on a
section of Gladstone-Benaraby
Road.
“There’s also one trial
site for each product in the
Rockhampton CBD for easier
monitoring by the project team
of the durability of the products
under normal conditions.”
Mr Noel said the trial would
continue indefinitely until at
least some of the poles had been
exposed to a bushfire.
“After that, we’ll be able to
assess the costs and benefits of
potentially extending the trial
to other bushfire-prone areas
across the state,” he said.
The Scout Group could potentially enrol more
new youth members in the following sections
if more parents and community members were
willing to take on roles as leaders and helpers:
Joey Scouts (5-7 years) – programs include craft,
games and activities to learn about self and the environment.
Cub Scouts (8-10 years) – learn new
skills through a variety of hands-on activities.
Scouts (11-14 years) – learn life skills and teamwork
through a variety of adventurous activities.
FARMING
Rural enterprises closing down
Photos by Miles Noller
Champion pig of the show
The demise of family operated intensive farming
businesses, dairying and pork production, continues
with a Jersey stud south of Toowoomba set for a 12
month dispersal period.
Steve and Jenny McCarthy plan to sell-off their
Ascot Park Jerseys with two clearance sales, the
first on April 27, with about 140 cows listed. Another
sale in about 12 months would offer the remainder
of the herd.
Steve McCarthy said they wanted a change in
lifestyle.
They took over the Ascot Park business in 1988.
His father established the business in 1945.
He said the dairy side of the business had been
successful as they averaged 8cents/litre of milk
above the normal factory price.
Ascot Park Jerseys have won many royal show
championships over the decades.
Pork producers are also leaving their industry
for financial reasons.
For the past 12 months, pig prices paid to farmers
have been at or near the cost of production, forcing
some to consider the future.
In recent months, piggeries at Dalby and
Brymaroo have closed.
won by Ascot Park Elton Wanda, producing 291kg
of protein and 403kg of butterfat for the required
period. Max Middleton from Cambooya is a life
member of the RAS and was chief steward of the
dairy cattle section for more than 15 years.
Champion pig of the Toowoomba Royal Show was this Large White boar,
Pinedock Marshall, from the five months to seven months class. It was
exhibited by Chris and James Dockrill, Pinedock, Casino NSW, and was the
junior champion boar at the recent Sydney Royal Show. Chris Dockrill, left,
FARMING
TOOWOOMBA ROYAL SHOW PICTORIAL Photos by Miles Noller Champion alpaca
Pittsworth lambs take title
Lamb producers seem
to be always ready to try
different breed crosses as
they seek the best lambs
and best prices.
Peter Hood and his
family at Pittsworth
appear to have withstood
the trend to Dorper sheep,
and indeed, is being asked
to supply Texel rams for
Dorper flocks.
At the Toowoomba
Show where he exhibited
the champion pen of three
lambs and the champion
single lamb, he said he
was selling Texel rams to
those running Dorpers.
They did not want to
shear, so Dorpers were
suitable, but they wanted
to improve the meat and
carcase quality.
Mr Hood said he had
also heard from a butcher
who preferred the Texel
and Dorper cross rather
than straight Dorper.
“So it’s starting
to happen,” he said,
referring to a counter
trend to the trendy
Dorpers.
Peter Hood and his
father Les understand
trends in meat sheep
production.
of the Toowoomba Royal Show One lamb from the pen was champion single lamb of the show. The
lambs were Texel cross and were bred at the Hood family’s stud at Plainview, Pittsworth.
Three or so decades
ago, they established a
Texel stud when Poll
Dorsets and Suffolks
were popular. The Texel
breed is from the island of
Texel in the Netherlands,
and the lambs the Hoods
had at the Toowoomba
Show were various
crosses of Texel, Border
Leicester and Merino.
CROWS NEST CATTLE SALE
Saturday, April 21
With winter looming and Queensland currently
flooded with southern cattle because of the extended
dry conditions in the south, we saw a softening of the
Market on Saturday which fitted the trend over the
past week or so. Medium Feeder Steers ex-Boodua
sold to $1170 along with Charolais Feeders ex-
Groomsville to $1090/hd. A pen of Hereford Steers
ex-Merritts Creek made $1100. R & D Wallace sold
7-8 mth Angus weaner calves to $820. Unweaned
Angus Steer calves ex-Haden sold to $740 to av
$710/hd. A run of Angus cows to $1040 with good
young Angus Heifers to $900 to av $885. Charbray
Steers ex-Emu Creek sold to $830/hd. All in all, the
market is back although unweaned steer calves
are still making around $750-$850 with Heifers at
a slightly more reduced rate which again, fits with
the current trend.
Vintage and Modern theme for new exhibition
Learning new techniques with
Julie Sweeney turned out to
be a great experience for a
small group with some interesting
textured works produced.
Alfoil, black gesso and various
mark making tools were used to
imprint onto the paper before adding
colour with other mediums.
Shaded areas were created using
tools with a wider edge.
Participants were delighted
with their efforts and were looking
forward to practicing the techniques.
Local artist Bill Morton will be
conducting the next workshop on
June 23 and participants will be
working with pen and ink. As a
professional artist Bill has a large
storehouse of knowledge to share.
AFL legend is speaker
at Mayoral breakfast
Triple Brisbane
Lions AFL premiership
player and current Gold
Coast Suns Head of
Development Shaun
Hart is the guest speaker
for this year’s Mayoral
Prayer Breakfast on
Tuesday, May 15, at
Rumours International,
Toowoomba.
Toowoomba Region
Mayor Paul Antonio
has also announced
proceeds from the 26th
annual function would be
donated to Toowoomba
Community Care
Transport.
Tickets are now on
sale.
“Shaun Hart etched his
SHAUN HART
name as an AFL great by Success didn’t come overnight
playing in the peerless Brisbane Lions side that won
premierships in 2001, 2002 and 2003,” Cr Antonio
said.
“His whole-hearted performances are exemplified
by his effort to win the Norm Smith Medal for the
best player in the 2001 grand final.
“Shaun enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning
273 AFL games with the Brisbane Lions and
previously the Brisbane Bears.
“His playing highlights include winning a
Victorian State of Origin jumper and induction as a
Brisbane Lions life member.
“Anyone who consistently performs at the highest
level in a highly competitive and physical sporting
arena understands the commitment and dedication
that is required on the training paddock and in the
off-season to become a champion.
“Shaun displayed this across his playing career
and was highly regarded as a selfless team player.
He is now passing his knowledge to the emerging
players at the Gold Coast Suns.
“Success didn’t come overnight and I’m sure
Shaun will explain the persistence and beliefs
that helped him achieve goals on and off the field,
including his involvement with the Elevation
Church at the Gold Coast and ongoing player
development.”
Cr Antonio said he was pleased funds from
this year’s breakfast would be distributed to help
volunteer organisation Toowoomba Community
Care Transport Inc.
The organisation was started by the Rotary Club
of Toowoomba in 1995 with the aim of transporting
people who did not qualify to receive ambulance or
subsidised taxi transport, to medical appointments
at hospital, a doctor’s surgery or health practitioner
in Toowoomba. Many
clients might not be
well enough to drive nor
have family members
who can take them to
regular appointments.
They often require more
personal assistance than
can be provided by other
transport operators.
Volunteer drivers
transport clients to and
“The Mayoral Prayer
Breakfast has the distinction of being one of the
few events of its kind in Australia that is completely
supported by its home businesses and organisations
with proceeds delivered back to a chosen charity,” Cr
Antonio said.
“The function highlights the everyday work of
many community and charity groups that often goes
unnoticed by the wider community.
“Thankfully, the Toowoomba region is blessed
with a strong network of committed organisations
and people who are ready and willing to assist people
through challenging periods.”
Cr Antonio paid tribute to suppliers and sponsors
who continued to provide priceless assistance to the
fundraiser.
“Many supporters, such as TAFE South West,
Rumours, numerous food suppliers such as Betros
Brothers and hospitality students from St Saviour’s
and St Joseph’s College, have been loyal and valuable
backers from the first function.
“I again thank all business people and volunteers
for contributing to the function which has raised
more than $280,000 for more than 30 charities in this
region.”
