Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre - Portsmouth was set up to be a vessel to
help achieve the Andrew Simpson Foundation’s charitable objectives. We are
passionate about encouraging young people into sailing and Watersports and
we pride ourselves on giving the best experience possible.
With this in mind the ASWC – Portsmouth are delivering several different projects across
Hampshire to inspire young people from different backgrounds to have a go at sailing
or to get active outdoors. We are able to work with Schools and groups to identify key
priorities with the school and tailor programmes to suit their needs.
See below an example of one of the programmes we have
delivered for a KS3 group.
Activities Offered:
• Sailing
• Raft Building
• Canoe Rafting
• Kayaking
• Kart Building
• Climbing
• Stand Up Paddle Boarding
This programme complimented the KS3 group’s curriculum
as part of their Outdoor and Adventurous Activities section.
The students started with Raft Building so the instructors
could meet the learners and assess how they work together
as a team. At the start of the Summer term the group started
Sailing and they enjoyed and engaged well with the sport.
Over the weeks we began to receive learners who were
not previously accessing OAA sessions regularly but who
had heard about the sessions through other learners in their
class talking about how much fun it was.
The Learners had 5 sessions (weekly) of each waterbased
activity. We made sure the group were taking care
of the equipment before and after sessions by ensuring
it was clean before putting it away. These skills are easily
transferrable into general life skills, by teaching them to
take pride in the equipment it instils respect and value and
learning about how if you take care of things, they last longer
to bring more enjoyment.
During the sessions the learners were well behaved
and spoke to the Centre staff with respect and this was
something that was key in the school’s requirements.
During the time that the learners spent at the centre their
engagement in activities increased as did their learners’
engagement with the school’s reward system. Attendance at
OAA sessions increased by 16.3% over the time they spent
with us, with some learners increasing their attendance by
over 50%. We have also had several learners gain their
BCU Level 1 certificate, which is a nationally recognised
certificate of competence in a kayak or canoe.
Some of the other projects that the ASWC - Portsmouth
have identified with schools are, targeting inactivity and
mental health initiatives along with tackling obesity. The
group that take part in these initiatives have access to
activities such as Sailing, Kayaking, Climbing, Archery,
Leadership and Teambuilding. The Andrew Simpson
Foundation have credible research into the health and
wellbeing benefits of sailing and we fully stand by the view
that giving learners access to learning outdoors is great
for both the mind and the body. These initiatives are vital
in educating the learners on how they can access these
activities to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
