Featured Wildlife
Pygmies are normally found at higher elevations but
move down to lower elevations in the winter. They can
often be located by observing flocks of agitated songbirds
that will mob a Pygmy owl upon discovery. Pygmy
owls are monogamous during breeding season and
lay eggs in tree cavities; they never excavate their own
cavities and thus are reliant on rot and woodpeckers to
carve out their cavities. A typical clutch of eggs contains
between two and seven eggs. The female incubates the
eggs for 28 days while the male hunts. After hatching,
the nestling period lasts between 21 to 23 days and the
first flight is normally at around 28 days old. Pygmies
are non migratory and are found on the coast of Vancouver
Island year round. Northern Pygmy owls are
listed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation
of Nature) as Least Concern. Because they are
cavity nesters, Pygmy Owls need dead standing timber
for breeding sites. As a result, forest management practices
of removing dead trees can reduce their habitat.
As Pygmies are reliant on woodpeckers to carve out
their nesting cavities, their survival is directly dependent
on woodpecker populations. Proper forest management
practices can help ensure that Pygmy populations continue
to thrive into the future.•
Northern Pygmy Owl
While the Northern Pygmy owl is at first glance a cute and
cuddly little bird, in reality it’s a ferocious predator capable
of taking down prey over three times its size. Pygmies
hunt during the day using their natural camouflage to blend in with
their surroundings. This makes it one of the easier species of owl
to spot. Songbirds, small mammals, and insects make up its diet.
When food is abundant, a pygmy will store food within caches in
tree cavities. Northern Pygmy owls can be identified by their small
stature; rounded head; and large yellow eyes. They are six to seven
inches in height with a wingspan of approximately 15 inches. They
are dark brown in colour, with white speckles on their back and two
large dark patches on the back of their neck which look like eyes.
These are believed to be a defence mechanism against predators,
which include larger owls, raptors and some mammals such as weasels.
They lack the larger ears and tufts that most owls have. These
owls have a greater reliance on vision than other species of owls.
Ukeedaze: When did you get into photography,
and when did it become your career?
Douglas: When I was about 10, I bought a
camera at a garage sale and my step-dad ran
a camera store so he made me read a book
called “My First Camera”. I learned the
basics and what photography is all about.
In high school I learned how to shoot
film in the dark room and then around
1990, I bought some good gear and started
working for Split clothing shooting their
skate, snow, and surf team. I eventually
stopped working for them and branched
off doing it as a career and started shooting
snowboarding. The snow brought me up
to Canada as I was shooting with Kevin
Sansalone and the Seymour crew. At the
time there wasn’t a whole lot of money to
made in the snowboard industry, but when
I started getting into the mags in the early
90’s I was super stoked and wanted to keep
following my passion. When I moved up
to Canada I got the cover for Snowboard
Canada and that was pretty huge for me. So
professionally it’s been about 20 years, but I
took a break for a couple years and worked
as a sales rep.
Ukeedaze: What equipment are you currently
using?
Douglas: I’ve always been a Nikon customer,
right now I have the Nikon D600.
Ukeedaze: Aside from taking photos what
else are you passionate about:
Douglas: Surfing and photography are my
two biggest passions. I grew up surfing and
it’s been a constant in my life. Surfing is another
reason why I ended up in Ucluelet. I
started sponsoring Sepp and Raph Bruhwiler
and Peter Devries when I was working
with Globe Shoes, they’d take me surfing
and fishing and I just loved the beauty and
nature up here. Surfing has kind of made
me who I am, it’s my church, I always feel
better after a surf and I’ve been doing it
since I was 13.
Ukeedaze: What’s the best thing about living
in Ukee?
Douglas: The quietness, the wildlife, and the
nature. You can be out in nature instanly;
everywhere you look there’s a beautful backdrop.
I shoot weddings with my girlfriend
Ocean, she’s my partner and this is our
studio. We can take couples out to the most
beautiful places and get amazing photos.
Ukeedaze: What’s your favorite subject to
shoot?
Douglas: A while ago it was snowboarding,
I like shooting surfing, but I’d rather
be surfing. I’d like to be shooting more
wildlife like bears and wolves as it connects
me more to nature. So nature, but my main
source of income is weddings. At first
weddings were a little stressful but we’ve got
it dailed now and I really enjoy capturing
those memories for people. I’m grateful
that Ocean is my partner now because she
brings us up to a higher level. So there are
two of us shooting and she helps me with
subtle touches that make our photos even
better.
Ukeedaze: So you’re from the U.S. originally.
Where did you grow up?
Douglas: I grew up in Long beach California,
which is just North of Huntington
Beach. I learned how to surf at Seal beach,
and Huntington.
Ukeedaze: What’s your biggest fear?
Douglas: I try to not let fear enter my life
and that’s one of the things I like about being
here as I’ve been able to let go of a lot
of the fears I used to have. I guess my biggest
fear is corrupt governments and that
my daughter might not have the same level
of freedoms that we’re able to enjoy right
now. It seems like Canada and the United
States are giving up a lot of freedoms in the
name of security and it’s a slippery slope.
Ukeedaze: Goofy, or Regular?
Douglas: I’m goofy.
Ukeedaze: Where do you see yourself in
five years?
Douglas: Shooting for more magazines,
maybe travelling more around the world to
shoot. My girlfriend and I would like to go
to Italy and make a cook book with photos
one day. Living a little bit more off the grid,
learning to hunt, buy a bigger lens, and
make more art.
Ukeedaze: I was able to watch your time
lapse video at the Art Splash event, which
was awesome by the way. Some of those
clips spanned quite a time frame, did you
stay with your gear, how were you able to
keep your equipment powered in those
remote locations and make it all work?
Douglas: Thanks, I have a battery pack so
I have two batteries, so I can go longer.
There were a couple of times when I left
it in the bush, came home, had dinner and
went back to grabbed it. That was when it
was hidden and remote enough that I didn’t
worry about someone finding it. Some of
them were out on my back deck. Typically
they were over three to four hour spans. I
started off small and I really got into it.
Ukeedaze: Can people find that if they
wanted to watch it?
Douglas: Not yet, but I’d like to do a shorter
one and put it up on Vimeo for people to
see. This was my first one, but I’d like to do
more of them, I still have a lot to learn with
editing it all.
Ukeedaze: What’s currently on your wish
list?
Douglas: An 800 mm lens with a doubler
2.8, a dual sport motorcycle so I can get to
more remote locations to shoot. Maybe a
boat so I can see more of the coast. Those
three things would make me pretty stoked.
That’s what I’m manifesting right now. •
Bear Aware
Photo: Liisa Nielsen
While on the West Coast of
Vancouver Island, it is important
to remember that we are in
bear country. By taking several simple
precautions, we can minimize the risk of
a dangerous encounter with a bear and do
our part to prevent bears from being killed
unnecessarily. Unfortunately every year
British Columbia Conservation officers
have to kill bears due to perceived or actual
threats to human safety. In fact from 1992
to 1996, a total of 246 grizzlies and 4,246
black bears were killed in British Columbia.
Unfortunately, in most instances, bears are
put down its due human carelessness. On
the bright side, most of these cases are
preventable. With a few minor changes to
our behaviour, these killings can be avoided.
Bears can become what is referred to as
“food conditioned” if allowed access to
food and garbage. Once this happens, the
bear becomes more difficult to scare off
and can begin to associate people with food.
Once this occurs, the bear will be more
likely to approach humans and inevitably
will have to be put down. To prevent
bears from becoming food conditioned
take the following steps:
• Dispose of all garbage in a bear
safe container. There are bear safe
garbage cans and bins conveniently
located throughout town.
• Never leave food out and unattended.
While camping, leave the cooler
and food in the car when not in use
and overnight.
• Excess food residue on barbecues
can also attract bears; make sure to
burn off excess food residues and
clean grills after use.
• Dispose of fish waste properly.
• Never ever feed a bear.
Bears are wild animals and should be treated
with respect. While they are normally not
aggressive and shy away from humans, there
are some precautions we can take to prevent a
dangerous encounter:
• If a bear is encountered, remain calm and
back away. Do not panic.
• Keep pets on a leash. Pets can attract
bears and may provoke or chase a bear if
allowed. Keep pets on a leash and keep
them, yourself and other animals safe.
• When viewing wildlife, stay a safe distance
away. If in a vehicle, stay in the vehicle and
ensure that the vehicle is parked off the
road and in a safe visible location to avoid
being a traffic hazard.
Taking these steps goes a long way to preserving
our local bear populations so they can
continue to thrive for years to come. •
