Medway Pride Day May 19th
By J.D. O’Gara
Medway Pride Day will take
place this year on Saturday,
May 19, 2018 from 10 a.m. to
4: p.m. at the Medway Middle
School (45 Holliston Street).
In the event of severe weather,
Medway Pride Day will be cancelled.
Planning for this year’s
event, attended by over 2,000
people each year and bringing
local residents, businesses
and organizations in the town
of Medway together, “is going
great,” says Sarah Stone, in
her third year on The Medway
Pride Day Committee, all volunteer
Medway residents.
“We have a lot of exciting
new things that are going
to be added (this year),” says
Stone. “One of the fun items
is that Medway Animal Hospital
will be hosting a Teddy
Bear Clinic. Basically, we’re
asking kids to bring their teddy
bear or other stuffed animal to
Pride Day, and they will perform
a checkup, and if there’s
any bandages necessary or any
improvements that need to be
made, they’ll take care of it
on the spot. I’m so excited the
animal hospital is willing to do
this. It’s something we’ve actually
been trying to get.”
Medway Pride attendees
will also have a chance to see
Henry the Juggler perform at
noon.
“Then, he’ll be able to stay
to teach folks who are interested
in learning the art of juggling,”
says Stone.
New musical acts this year
include Dan Rice, a local high
school student who leads the
As Massachusetts moves toward
opening retail outlets for
marijuana for adult recreational
use, many towns, such as Holliston,
Medway and Bellingham,
have voted to ban retail sales of
recreational marijuana. Millis,
after having looked at the issue
through its Retail Marijuana
Committee, has not. What remains
to be seen is how this
market will be regulated, and a
zoning bylaw up for vote at the
May 14th Town Meeting is likely
to be a widely debated one.
What is certain is that one
company, CommCan, Inc.,
owned by Marc and Ellen Rosenfeld,
will be definitely be opening
its doors for sale of both medical
and recreational marijuana in the
town.
“We’ve been in it for medical
for three years,” says Ellen
Rosenfeld. “In the regulations by
the state, they allowed people that
are involved in the medical marijuana
side, if they had a provisional
or a final registration from
the Department of Public Health
by June 1, 2017, they had priority
status to transition to adult
use recreational.” Those groups,
she says, “can convert to recreational
even if the town changed
the zoning for recreational, even
if they don’t want recreational
(sales) in zoning IP2.”
That being a done deal,
Rosenfeld, whose company has a
60,000 square-foot growing facility
in Medway (that is only half
built out at this point), will be be-
“If this one (zoning) measure
doesn’t pass at Town Meeting,
then the moratorium extends
through the end of the year, and
I will not be able to open until
January first,” says Rosenfeld.
CommCan, Inc., which has
been growing and harvesting,
will have products to sell some
time in June. If they can’t sell
recreational use marijuana in
Millis before the end of the year,
they’ll sell it at their retail location
on Route 9 in Southborough
for the time being.
According to Nicole Riley,
Chair of Millis’ Retail Marijuana
Committee (RMC), the
advisory committee proceeded
with an abundance of caution
in preparing recommendations
for a town approach to retail for
the Board of Selectmen.
Riley explains that the RMC
considered developing an overlay
district, but, she says, the
Cannabis Control Commission
had yet to indicate whether it
would honor town moratoriums.
“We thought we didn’t
have time to develop an overlay
district,” says Riley. “There
was concern that they were not
going to honor moratoriums
past June first.”
The RMC, then, voted 4-2 to
submit a proposed zoning bylaw
to Selectmen for the May Town
Meeting vote, with the idea that
the town could go back and later
amend the bylaw to include an
overlay district.
“We placed all adult recreational
use marijuana in the ip2
district,” says Riley. “However,
we included a 1,500-foot setback
from certain protected uses.”
Those protected uses, which the
group took from the adult entertainment
bylaw already in place
for the town, included schools,
playgrounds libraries, child care
facilities, video arcades, places
of worship, and any other facility
that minors congregate in
an organized fashion, as well as
residential districts.
In fact, those protected uses
are already in Millis bylaws
for medical marijuana, with a
1,000-foot setback.
Although they realized the
1,500-foot setback was restrictive,
the RMC presented the
zoning bylaw to the Board of
Selectmen, who at the time
voted unanimously to send the
proposed bylaw to the Planning
Board for public hearing,
but before that public hearing
could occur, a potential business
stepped forward: 617 Therapeutic
Health Center, which submitted
a letter of intent to the Board
of Selectmen that they were interested
in establishing a medical
marijuana facility at 1073
Main Street. 617 hoped to later
add non-medical manufacture
and cultivation to the site. They
discussed their proposal with
Selectmen on April 2, 2018 for
a roughly 70,000 square-foot facility.
Initially, 617 THC hoped
to include retail in their model,
but the company indicated at
the meeting it was prepared to
convert those plans to a solely
cultivation and processing facility.
If 617 THC were allowed to
proceed as a cultivator and manufacturer
only, Millis could see
an estimated $100,000 per year
Our Ad & Editorial Deadline
is the 15th of the month, for the following month’s issue
for the first five years in a host
agreement with the company,
and an estimated $150,000 per
year in tax revenue after that, according
to Craig Schultze, Millis
Finance Committee Chair.
Under the RMC’s proposed
bylaw, 617 Therapeutics would
be precluded from operating
any part of its establishment not
only due to the 1,500-foot setback,
but also because the property
abuts residential property
and Ryan Family Amusements.
On April 9th, the Board of
Selectmen then voted to make a
couple of changes to the bylaw
proposed by the RMC. This
change would offer two setback
versions, one with a 1,500-foot
setback for adult use retail and
the other with a 500-foot setback
for all other adult uses,
which would include cultivation,
manufacturing and testing ability.
In addition, residential and
video arcade districts were removed
from the list of protected
uses for non-retail marijuana
business.
With a vote of 2-1 (McAffrey
and Macinnes for; Barnes
against), the Millis Board of
Selectmen voted to put this
amended zoning bylaw on the
Town Warrant.
On Tuesday, April 10th, the
Planning Board held a public
hearing on the proposed bylaw
and in the end, the Planning
Board was split in its vote of
support for it, with two members
for it, two against and one
abstaining.
The next day (Wednesday,
April 11th), the Retail Marijuana
Committee met with regard
to where they stand on the
proposed bylaw amended by
the Board of Selectmen. Two
voted for it; two voted in support
of the RMC version; and
two voted in support of taking
the time to come up with an
overlay district for November’s
town meeting. At Local Town
Pages press time, the committee
was scheduled to meet again on
May 2nd for another vote. That
update will be available in the
online version of this story at
www.millismedwaynews.com.
The Finance Committee too,
has held off making a recommendation
of its support. At
press time, the Finance Committee
had also scheduled another
meeting with a possible
vote on May 2nd, following the
RMC meeting. An update with
the results of that meeting will
be available at www.millismedwaynews.com.
So far, 617 THC is hopeful
the town will be open to working
with them.
“Understanding we have
been engaged with Millis for
only six weeks, our initial conversations
with town officials
have been very positive,” said
Richard Gin, CFO for 617
Therapeutic Health Centers.
“The potential to revitalize
1073 Main Street and provide a
significant economic impact to
Millis is real and we are excited
about continuing that conversation.
The Board of Selectmen
language allows us the opportunity
to apply for a special permit
and engage in a full dialogue
with the Town.”
Also on the warrant for May
is the question of a 3% sales
tax on all adult use recreational
marijuana sales, and an article
setting a limit on the number of
retail marijuana establishments
in town.
What happens moving forward
with 617 THC, or with
any marijuana-related business
in Millis, will entirely depend on
what voters think, and if committee
votes are any indication,
the subject will be hotly debated
at the May 14th Town Meeting.
On April 23, 2018, Millis
BOS Chair Jim McAffrey
said, “The only board that has
stepped forward is the Board of
Selectmen, and that is the warrant
article (26) to be discussed,
recommended, or dismissed … I
would urge people to come and
hear the debate. There is no
purer form of democracy than
theTown Meeting.”
Millis High to Present Screenagers
& Presentation on Vaping May 23rd
By Dave Pasquantonio
It’s called vaping, and you’ve
no doubt seen it. Someone exhales
thick clouds of what looks
like cigarette smoke, but the vapor
quickly dissipates, and there’s no
cigarette smell.
Even if you don’t know what
vaping is, your kids do.
The rapid rise in vaping among
youth is a concern for health professionals,
parents and educators.
The Millis Public Schools invites
parents and community members
to a Caron Treatment Centers’
presentation on vaping
and e-cigarettes for parents and
community members on Wednesday,
May 23rd in the Millis High
explores the impact of technology
on children, at 6 p.m.
For those who have never
heard of vaping, here is a primer.
Traditional cigarettes use a
flame to heat and burn tobacco.
The user inhales and exhales tobacco
smoke, and the cigarette
emits smoke continuously until
it’s extinguished.
Vaping is different. Inhaling or
pressing a button on a vaping device
triggers it to heat a nicotineinfused
liquid, which is turned
into an aerosol that the vaper inhales.
The user exhales a stream
of water vapor containing remnants
of whatever chemicals, including
nicotine, are in the liquid.
There are a few parts to each
vaping device. A cartridge or a
tank holds the liquid, commonly
called the juice; a battery provides
power; coils heat the juice; and an
atomizer turns the heated juice
into an aerosol.
Vaping products are technology
products that come in a variety
of shapes and sizes. There are
“cig-a-likes,” which mimic the
size and feel of a traditional cigarette.
Tank systems come with a
bigger battery and a larger receptacle
for the juice. Mod systems
can be customized with not only
a huge range of juice flavorings
and nicotine levels, but also heating
elements, batteries, and other
tweaks. Using a mod system is
like taking a traditional cigarette
and replacing the original tobacco
with whatever the user wishes to
smoke, while personalizing the
amount and intensity of the
Vaping systems come and go
quickly in the marketplace. A
few years ago, products by Blu
and NJOY were market leaders,
then Vuse, owned by tobacco
giant RJ Reynolds, took over the
top spot, with easy-to-use, pricecompetitive,
and widely-distributed
products.
Then came Juul, and this is
the device that has schools worried.
Juul hit the market about
two years ago and saw an explosive
sales growth through 2017.
Some estimates show that Juul
has captured over half of overthe-counter
vaping retail sales in
the first few months of 2018. Juuls
look like USB flash drives, while
the pods contain the nicotine and
flavor. The company currently offers
eight flavors, with each pod
containing about the nicotine
equivalent of a pack of traditional
cigarettes.
Juul products have become so
popular that they’ve spawned a
new verb—kids “juul” instead of
“vape” (no one who vapes calls it
“smoking”). The vapor dissipates
in less than a minute, as does the
smell. With no residual smell and
smoke base, the days of catching
kids smoking in the restroom by
the tell-tale odor are long gone.
Vaping can be done so discreetly
that teachers and parents can
have no idea that someone is vaping.
Many schools have reported
kids vaping in class—the kids either
hold their breath until most
of the vapor is gone, or exhale
into their shirt. If you have kids in
any middle or high school, they’ve
no doubt seen kids vaping.
The FDA reported a 900 percent
increase in e-cigarette use by
high school students from 2011 to
2016, and this was before the Juul
became so popular. The FDA is
exploring lessening the amount
of allowed nicotine in cigarettes
to a non-addictive level, as well as
looking at regulations on flavorings
to lessen the appeal of vaping
to youth. Although companies
aren’t allowed to market directly
to kids, combining flavors like
“gummi bear” with ad blitzes for
“back to school sales” certainly
isn’t going to dissuade kids.
Officially, kids aren’t allowed
to buy vaping products. In Massachusetts,
more than 100 municipalities
have raised the minimum
age to buy tobacco products, including
vaping products, to 21
years from the state-mandated
18 years. Most area schools have
rolled vaping under their tobacco
regulations, so penalties or restrictions
for vaping are the same
as those for smoking on school
grounds.
No one is claiming that vaping
is healthy—but is vaping
healthier than smoking? Vapers
say yes, but their reasons are entirely
anecdotal. Smokers who
have switched to vaping say they
feel a lot better and don’t have
the symptoms that cigarettes
gave them. It is true that cigarette
smoke contains thousands of different
chemicals, including dozens
of carcinogens, while vaping
produces predominantly an aerosol
containing nicotine and a few
other chemicals.
But it’s unknown what’s in
many of the vaping juices, and
how those chemicals interact when
used. For example, a juice may
contain such a small amount of
lead that’s virtually undetectable,
but when heated, the vapor can
contain lead at unsafe levels. The
same is true for arsenic. These and
other toxic metals may be coming
from the device’s heating coils instead
of the nicotine-filled juice.
Many of the vaping products are
made in China, where the manufacturers
are less than forthcoming
about their ingredients.
As vaping products are relatively
new, and have evolved so
rapidly, there are no long-term
health studies. Claims that vaping
is proven to be drastically safer
College looming on the horizon?
It was not that many years ago that my child graduated from high school, and as a
fellow parent, I recall the daunting task of completing all of the various applications
while simultaneously preparing myself and my child for this huge milestone. As
someone who has been through it before, I’d like to share with you two things that
helped me and my family during the process, which may be of value to you.
For understandable reasons there are now a myriad of government-sponsored
student loan alternatives, some of which have interest rates approaching 12%. While
everyone’s situation is different, many parents use a home equity line of credit from
Needham Bank to cover college expenses. Please consult your financial advisor as
well as our website for current rates before making any important financial decisions.
But this may be a way for you to save substantially on the cost of a college education.
My second suggestion is that your student considers an NB Checking account.
You’d be amazed at how the hidden fees and ATM charges add up for kids who go
away to college. As community bankers, we consider things like this because our
children face the same challenges. With NB Checking and a corresponding NB Debit
Card, there are no monthly fees, plus free ATM access globally. Whatever another
bank charges you or your student to use their machine – whether on campus or
abroad – we will fully reimburse each month. College is expensive enough without
over-paying for the privilege of using your own money.
At this time of year, many parents and students are finalizing their college strategies.
If either of the afore-referenced suggestions are of interest to you, I’d be pleased
to help. My name is Eric Morse and I invite you to contact me at 781-474-5955 or
EMorse@NeedhamBank.com, so that I might direct your request to an NB Personal
Banker. We’d be pleased to meet with you at any of our offices, or at your home or
office depending on what is most convenient for you. Best wishes and many thanks
for your consideration.
Since 2013, Needham Bank
has been hosting events at their
locations on the Boston Marathon
route to provide a comfortable
place for customers to
view the marathon with family
and friends. The idea originated
with the Bank’s Wellesley location
at 458 Washington Street
and grew when Needham
Bank’s Natick office at 17 West
Central Street opened in 2016.
This year, many runners
could not continue due to suffering
from severe weather related
health challenges. Upon
seeing the big white hospitality
tents, runners stopped at both
of the Bank’s locations to seek
assistance and shelter. Needham
Bank employees helped over a
dozen runners, providing warm
shelter, blankets, dry clothes,
food and hot beverages.
“We were all disappointed
for the runners when we saw
the weather report for this year’s
race, but were even more concerned
when it turned out worse
than expected,” remarked Sarah
Tesorero, Needham Bank’s Creative
Marketing Manager. “As
the runners came to our tent
Needham Bank employees in the Natick Office with runners they assisted on Marathon Monday
seeking help, we were more
than happy to do all we could
to make them comfortable –
we wrapped them in blankets,
turned the heat up, and helped
them contact their loved ones.
We did our best to keep their
spirits high, despite the fact that
some of them couldn’t go on to
finish the race, but their determination
was truly an inspiration.”
Just a few miles away in
Natick, the situation was similar.
“It started with one runner
from Utah who was unable to
continue because of hypothermia,
and then we ended up
with more runners coming in
throughout the day. Once the
runner from Utah was finally
feeling better, we found out he
was a nurse and he helped others
back to health. It was a truly
heartwarming experience to see
these people from different states
and countries helping each other
and we were just happy to provide
them with a warm and dry
location to do so,” commented
Lois Seymour, Needham Bank’s
Natick Branch Manager.
In an email to Joe Campanelli,
Needham Bank’s President and
CEO, one of the runners who
stopped at the Natick branch
recounted his experience and
wrote, “Daisy, Lois and others
quickly took action and provided
warm drinks, food, blankets and
Needham Bank t-shirts. They
are truly angels and have a special
place in my heart. These are
the moments when you get a true
appreciation of what community
means. Thanks again for your
team’s love and care.”
The Bank has received numerous
texts and emails of
heartfelt thanks and appreciation.
One text message sent to
the Bank included a picture of
the runner with his medal stating
he could not have finished
without the help of the Wellesley
branch employees.
“We are so proud of our
teams in Natick and Wellesley
for the care and attention they
provided,” stated Joe Campanelli.
“We expect nothing less
from our employees because we
know how much they care about
our communities.”
than smoking have been widely
panned. Since kids treat vaping
and smoking as two entirely different
activities, they often assume
that vaping is much safer than
smoking.
Nicotine is addictive because
once it reaches the brain, the
brain releases endorphins to create
a brief feeling of euphoria—
the “nicotine rush.” The rush
doesn’t last for long, however—
once it’s worn off, the body looks
for another rush.
Vaping triggers the same reward
centers in the brain as
smoking. Kids who vape regularly
become dependent on nicotine,
and the more they vape, the more
nicotine their bodies crave.
Beyond nicotine dependency,
vaping presents more serious concerns.
Although over-the-counter
products like the Juul can’t use
juices and flavors other than
what they were manufactured
with, other vaping products can
be infused with a wide variety of
drugs, like THC—the principal
psychoactive component of marijuana—fentanyl,
MDMA, and
other synthetic and organic drugs.
One thing that’s always been
true about the world is that it
changes, often faster than we realize.
And another is that anecdotal
evidence should never be used to
draw sound conclusions. Meetings
like the one in Millis on May 23
are excellent ways for parents (and
concerned kids!) to ask questions
and become better informed.
The market may
be uncertain.
Meet & Greet Moderator Candidates for May 7 Millis Town Election
Tuesday, May 1, 2018 • 7-8 p.m.
Roche Bros. Community Room, Millis Public Library
Get to know the people who want to work to improve our town!
Brutus Cantoreggi
I love Millis! My family loves
Millis! My wife and I moved to
Millis in 1999 as newly married
couple. We have developed our
property into a wonderful place
to raise our two children. We affectionately
call our home Blueberry
Hollow Farm where we
promote the farming ideals of
Millis.
Since my arrival in Millis, I
have been an active participant
in our community. I have been
a member of the Millis Planning
Board for the last 15 years and
presently serve as the Chairman.
I have also been the Town’s Tree
Warden for the last 16 years. In
addition, I have also served on
many committees including the
Oak Grove Playground, Sewer
Study, and Sports Fields committees.
Through the years, I
have enjoyed meeting many Millis
families and their children
through my coaching role.
As a veteran, I am a member
and support our local veterans’
organizations.
I have worked for the City of
Cambridge, the Town of Norwood,
and the Town of Millis
in various municipal roles. For
the past 12 years, I have been
the Director of Public Works for
the Town of Franklin. My fulltime
employment with cities and
towns in Massachusetts has given
me a solid understanding of the
issues and operations of local
government.
I am a firm believer in a Town
Meeting form of government, especially
for a smaller community
like Millis. Town Meeting is a
wonderful exercise in democracy
that allows all residents to be recognized
and heard. The most
important component to insure
a successful Town Meeting is the
active participation of residents,
where ideas are presented and
shared. The second key aspect is
the strong leadership of the moderator.
I am confident that I would
be able to facilitate a smooth
and enjoyable Town Meeting! I
would appreciate your vote!
Erin Underhill
My family and I moved to
Millis in July 2015. We are so
happy to be a part of this community
and excited to grow
our roots here. I currently
co-lead one of the Daisy Girl
Scout Troops in town, provide
doorstep delivery for the
library, participate in the HSA
(Home and School Association)
for Clyde Brown Elementary
School and am chairwoman
of the newly created Town
Meeting Review Committee.
I really find the Town Meeting
process fascinating. In college,
I used Robert’s Rules of
Order extensively in student
government meetings. I also
received a scholarship to travel
to William & Mary College
to attend the Floyd M. Riddick
Williamsburg Practicum
in Parliamentary Procedure.
In preparation for this role, I
have been attending the finance
committee meetings so that if
I’m elected, I’ll have an understanding
of the warrant articles
and be ready to run the meeting
the week after elections.
I’m excited for the opportunity
to run efficient, and effective
Town Meetings and encourage
more participation! If elected, I
would be the first female moderator
in the town of Millis.
Living Healthy
Glaucoma: What It Is and How to Treat It
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Glaucoma is a progressive
disease of the optic nerve which
works like a cable, connecting
the eye and the brain. Glaucoma
happens when the pressure inside
the eye is higher than the optic
nerve can withstand. The most
common form of glaucoma is
silent in the beginning but can
cause a patient to slowly lose the
vision if left untreated, starting
with the peripheral vision. The
most frustrating characteristic of
glaucoma is that for many years,
the loss of vision will go unnoticed
by a patient.
Although anyone can get
glaucoma, some people are at
higher risk than others. Some
of the most common risk factors
include: African Americans, over
age 40, people with a family history
of glaucoma and patients
with diabetes.
Almost 2% of Americans
have been diagnosed with glaucoma.
Approximately 1/4th of
those diagnosed with glaucoma
are African Americans. Worldwide,
2.4 million people per
year are diagnosed with glaucoma.
The prevalence of glaucoma
increases with age. By the
year 2020, it is estimated that the
number of patients diagnosed
with glaucoma will be 3.6 million.
Glaucoma accounts for approximately
12% of all new cases
of legal blindness each year.
The optic nerve is like a cable
made up of over 1 million nerve
fibers that carry the information
collected by your eye (retina) to
the visual cortex of the brain for
processing. Glaucoma slowly, decreases
the ability of your optic
nerve to carry this information to
your brain.
The buildup of pressure in
your eye causes glaucoma. There
are currently two basic theories
as to why excessive ocular pressure
causes glaucoma. Either
high intra-ocular pressure decreases
blood flow to the optic
nerve, or high pressure, over
time, physically crushes and kills
the individual nerve fibers.
At first, open-angle glaucoma
has no symptoms. Vision stays
normal, and there is no pain. As
glaucoma remains untreated,
people may notice that although
they see clearly in front of them,
they miss objects to the side and
out of the corner of their eye.
It may seem as though they are
looking through a tunnel. Over
time, the remaining vision may
decrease until there is no vision
left. Optic nerve damage caused
by glaucoma is permanent;
therefore, it is important to seek
treatment in the early stages of
the disease. Most people think
that they have glaucoma if the
pressure in their eye is high. This
is not always true. High pressure
puts you at a higher risk for glaucoma;
however, an elevated pressure
by itself does not make the
diagnosis of glaucoma. Whether
or not you get glaucoma depends
on the level of pressure that your
optic nerve can tolerate without
being damaged. This level is different
for each person. Although
normal pressure is usually said to
be between 12-21 mm Hg, a person
might have glaucoma even if
the pressure is in this range. That
is why an eye examination is very
important.
A patient being evaluated for
glaucoma will typically have a
dilated eye exam, to look at the
shape of the optic disk; gonioscopy:
which is using a lens to evaluate
the trabecular meshwork
where the fluid in the eye exits the
eye; tonometry: measuring the
pressure in the eye; pachymetry:
measuring the thickness of the
cornea; fundus photos; pictures
of the eye are helpful to look for
changes in the appearance of the
optic nerve over time; visual field
testing: measuring the peripheral
vision and optical coherence tomography
(OCT) to measure the
thickness of the nerve layer transmitting
the image to the brain;
visual field test measuring the peripheral
or side vision. Recently,
more advanced technology like
Visual-Evoked Potential (VEP)
and electroretinograms (ERG)
have been found to be useful in
making the diagnosis of glaucoma
in more challenging cases.
Glaucoma is a lifelong disease
that will always require treatment.
Glaucoma is much like
hypertension and diabetes. We
can control these diseases, however
we cannot, yet, cure them.
Today there are numerous ophthalmic
medications available to
us in the treatment of glaucoma.
Some are eye drops that are used
only once a day; others are used
up to four times a day. More than
one medication may be used to
treat glaucoma. If glaucoma cannot
be controlled with medications
other procedures, including
laser and surgery may be considered.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use state-of-the-art technology
and lasers to diagnose
and treat a variety of eye problems,
including glaucoma. We
are proud to offer high definition
optic coherence tomography
testing (OCT) that can predict
glaucoma before it even happens.
All our offices are equipped
with OCT and state-of-the-art
computerized visual field testing.
With this high-tech service, we
bring to our community world
class eye care closer to home.
Medway Wellness Walk
Spring Edition
Opened in the fall of 2016, the
Wellness Walk is a .7 mile, clockwise
loop that travels through our
Medway High School’s new athletic
complex and a scenic field
and forest before ending near
the student parking lot. On the
walk, visitors will find 12 kiosks.
These kiosks—made possible by
funds generously allocated by the
Community Preservation Committee—are
intended to connect
our schools with our community
and promote the three pillars of
health and wellness: Physical, Social
and Mental.
A Trip down the Mississippi
For this spring’s first installation,
students in Mr. Collins’
and Ms. McCarthy’s American
Lit. Honors classes take you on a
journey down the Wellness Walk
with Mark Twain and his 1884
novel Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn.
As you progress from Kiosk
2 through 12, you will learn
about Twain’s life and
work, including major
themes, his important
role in American literary
history, and his
novel’s connection to
the 1800s. Upcoming
installations will
feature student projects
relating to the
civil war.
Get involved—The Wellness
Walk is looking for contributions!
If your club, team, organization,
etc. would like to be included
in a future installation,
please contact Kevin Collins
AMVETS Post 495 – An Institution in Millis
By J.D. O’Gara
In 1944, a group of 18 veterans
from nine veterans’ clubs
formed The American Veterans
of World War II. On July 23,
1947, President Harry S. Truman
signed Public Law 216,
making AMVETS the first
World War II organization to be
chartered by Congress.
Millis AMVETS, which according
to its Facebook page was
created on July 23, 1947, used to
be in a chicken coop, says member
Paul Howard, or “Ducky,”
who explains that the current
location of Millis AMVETS Post
495, at 404 Village Street in Millis,
is the fourth home for the post
since the 1970s.
“They went through four different
places: one on Pleasant
street, then Main Street, then
to the chicken coop that was on
Ira Tucker’s property, and then
we got this place,” says Howard,
who credits Donny Pettis, Sr., of
DP construction, for footing a lot
of his own money to build the
place. “There was even a softball
field,” he says.
The AMVETS is a private
club that is comprised
of three components,
according to current
Commander Michael
Delaporta, 22-year member
who served in the
Massachusetts National
Guard. While he is Commander
of AMVETS,
Deb Ela is President of
the Women’s Auxiliary,
and Danny Coffey is the
Commander of the Sons
of AMVETS.
To be an AMVET,
says Delaporta, you must
have served in any branch
of the U.S. military from
WWII on. Members of
the Women’s Auxiliary
and the Sons of AMVETS must
have had a family member in the
military. All pay annual dues.
“We are a private club, by our
charter, by our insurance and by
our business model,” says Delaporta,
who says that about half
of the members come from Millis,
and the other half from surrounding
towns, “but that does
not exclude the public from coming
in and enjoying the club, free
pool, free darts and free Wifi. It’s
an institution, and the club also
hosts a lot of fun events.”
The public can come to the
club and sign in through the
guestbook, he says.
Members say the camaraderie
of the organization was the draw
for them.
“I joined just to help out and
support the veterans, and it’s
such a fun bunch of people,”
says Ela, who’s been involved for
about 8 years.
Coffey, too, agrees. His father
was a Marine, and he’s been
a member of the Sons of AM-
VETS for 12 years. He says,” I
just enjoy doing stuff for the veterans
and the Sons, and helping
out at the fundraisers. We do a
breakfast buffet once a month,
too, on the first Sunday.” (The
breakfasts, $8 pp, are held September
to June, from 9-10:30
a.m.).
“We serve the veterans and
support service members that
are in. Right now, one of our
members is serving overseas,
so we’re putting together care
packages,” says Delaporta. He
invites anyone who has a loved
one currently serving to contact
AMVETS.
“You have to have an APO,
a specific military post office for
them,” he says. Without that, he
says, often by the time the packages
get to the soldier, they would
have been shipped to another location.
AMVETS also holds fundraisers
for various veteran-related
groups. They’ve raised over
$5,000 for the Wounded Warriors
project, and the location
hosts a couple of different bike
runs each year.
“We also have the reception
hall upstairs. Obviously, people
can rent that, and we also donate
it for multiple fundraisers, turkey
shoots, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts.
There have been multiple fundraisers
for people with cancer. We
let them use the hall, which holds
about 125, and they have to pay
the bartender.”
AMVETS also serves the
community in a number of
ways, including a number
of scholarships for graduating
Millis Seniors. “Anybody
can apply,” says Ela,” and
there’s a preference if you
have a family member who’s
a veteran.”
In addition, the site hosts
Toys for Tots near Christmas
time, as well as a giving tree
that time of year for families
in need. On Monday nights,
AMVETS has a pitch
league, and it also hosts two
pool teams.
The club also puts together
a number of fun
events, celebrating St. Patrick’s
Day and the Kentucky
Derby, and the Sons put together
tailgate parties to celebrate football
games, for instance. Coming
up on June 2nd is a crawfish boil,
with just a limited number of
tickets available.
These occasions provide a get
together, says Delaporta, “for the
folks that don’t have a lot of family
around – certainly the older
veterans.”
Certainly, that falls in line
with the mission the organization
states on its Facebook page:
“To enhance and safeguard
the entitlements for all American
Veterans who have served honorably
and to improve the quality
of life for them, their families,
and the communities where they
live through leadership, advocacy
and services.”
AMVETS Post 495, visit their
Facebook page, call (508) 376-
Street, Millis, and sign in as a
Millis Amvets Does NOT Solicit
Donations by Phone
By J.D. O’Gara
If you receive a call looking
for a donation to the Millis Amvets
Post 495 – it’s a scam.
“I am the current commander
of Millis Amvets Post
495. We don’t ask for donations
by phone,” says Michael Delaporta,
of Millis. Delaporta was
recently notified by a Medway
resident that he had been solicited
by telephone to donate to
the post.
“I then contacted the Millis
Police Department, who posted
the scam alert on their Facebook
page,” says Delaporta. “I
also contacted the consumer
affairs folks at Channel 10 Boston,
and they interviewed me.
They used it for a consumer
alert segment on air:
“We have been working to
keep the public informed on all
scams through our Facebook
account. The Amvets commander
notified us immediately
of the scam, and we pushed
out the information as soon
as we received it,” says Millis
Police Chief Chris Soffayer.
“If anyone feels they are being
scammed, we encourage people
to notify the police, so we can
investigate.”
“I want to do everything
in my power to alert residents
to the scam, so they aren’t
scammed by bad guys using our
names and most importantly, if
someone has been scammed,
they can tell us who they made
the check out to. That is the one
piece of information the Medway
resident couldn’t tell us as
he refused to fall for the scam,”
says Delaporta.
This is the first time in a few
years the Amvets has heard of
someone trying to falsely solicit
funds. “It may have happened
all the time, and nobody told
us,” he says. Delaporta reiterates
that the Millis Amvets Post
495 DOES NOT solicit donations
by telephone and never
would.
by this scammer and have any
details, please contact your local
the group is to provide free dance
Millis High School Senior Hosts
Service Learning Food Drive
On Thursday April 5, Dominic
Spada, a Millis High School
senior, hosted a small group
of students in the first component
of an introductory service
learning project. Dominic
learned about service learning
through his five trips to Guatemala
through School the World.
Since sophomore year, Dominic
has had a serious interest in
bringing the tenants of service
learning, combing service with
learning components in order
to benefit both the participants
and the community, to his Millis
community. This group learned
the components of service learning,
as well as gaining information
about the Millis Ecumenical
Food Pantry and nationwide food
pantries. This allowed the students
to gain essential knowledge
in order to be able to have a more
intimate relationship with the
project.
On April 8th, the students
hosted a food drive at Roche
Bros. in Millis, MA to collect the
five items that the food pantry
deemed it needed most. These
items were peanut butter, cereal,
tuna fish, canned soup, tomato
sauce. The volunteers provided
the shoppers with a list upon
their entry to the store as well
as reminders on the shelves of
the needed items. In addition
to cash donations, a total collection
of over 300 products, which
Dominic will be working with a
youth group associated with the
Church of Christ to deliver and
stock at the food pantry.
Dominic is pleased at his inaugural
effort at creating a true
service learning project and is
now looking forward to the opportunity
to lay the groundwork
for this project to become part
of the fabric of the Millis High
School community. If you are
interested in getting involved in
this project, please reach out to
Dominic at domspa18@millisschools.org.
Additional information
can be found by contacting
the food pantry at mefpantry@
Stallings Settles into No. 1 Singles Slot
for Millis Net Team
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Girls tennis at Millis High
hasn’t enjoyed a plethora of
success like the football team or
the girls soccer and basketball
squads, but trends often change.
And, if the Mohawks hope to
improve on last year’s 4-15 record,
then Kaitlyn Stallings no
doubt will be counted on to invigorate
the program.
The 5-foot-7 junior joined
the varsity last year as a sophomore,
and instead of playing
doubles matches like she did at
the jayvee level her freshman
season, she started in singles
matches and eventually settled
into the role as the Mohawks’
No. 1 singles player.
Coach Tom Ingraham is bullish
on Stallings’ ability. He likes
what he calls her “unique style,’’
that includes an aggressive approach
at the net, a strong serve
and an effective forehand.
“When she was on the jayvees,
I envisioned Kaitlyn as a
doubles player,’’ Ingraham said.
“But, last year she started in singles
and worked her way to No.
1. She’s willing to take chances
and be a disruption for an opponent.
She takes lessons and
that’s helped elevate her game.
An efficient volleyer, she’s also
got a great demeanor for the
sport because she’s able to stay
on an even keel.’’
The 17-year-old Stallings
won four matches last year and
two of them were rather significant
in her development. She
was inserted into the No. 1 singles
slot in her first varsity match
and defeated Milton’s top player
in two sets. And, against Medway,
she showed spunk in rallying
for a three-set win against
the Mustangs’ top player.
“I filled in at No. 1 singles
against Milton because of illness
and was able to overcome
being nervous,’’ Stallings recalled.
“I had to rely on the skills
I learned from my lessons. That
victory gave me confidence and
showed I could compete with an
older player. The win at Medway
stands out because of the
way I rallied.’’
So far this season, Stallings is
1-1 and Millis has a 0-2 record.
Stallings, who started playing
tennis at 11, has a variety of
strengths. Besides a strong serve
and a dependable cross-court
backhand, she’s effective on her
placements and her approach
shots.
“I depend on trying to understand
the different types of
players I face, and I also work
on being consistent and understanding
situational tennis,’’ she
said. “Where I need to improve
is volleying at the net and getting
more speed on forehand
and backhand shots.’’
Stallings’ team goal for the
season is for Millis to reach .500
and qualify for the tourney.
Personally, she’ll be striving to
Kaityln Stallings is indeed using her time on a tennis court efficiently,
and if she and her teammates can generate some success, then girls
achieve a winning record. “Our
team has a lot of seniors. We’re
experienced and have players
with talent,’’ she said. “We have
a chance to turn things around.’’
Stallings points to a trio of
teammates she believes will play
key roles this season — captain
Allie Smith, Meg Hourigan and
Lily Denman. “Allie is a smart,
consistent player,’’ Stallings
noted. “Meg is a terrific competitor
whose strokes are strong,
and Lily is a good placement hitter
whose serve is aggressive.’’
Also a fan of her coach, Stallings
labels Ingraham “a calm
presence.’’ She admires her
coach’s ability “to motivate, encourage
and to focus on basics.’’
Stallings, who also is an outside
hitter on the varsity volleyball
team, isn’t intimidated
when she’s continually matched
against No. 1 singles players
from rival teams. Her approach
is to stay positive. “Any pressure
that mounts comes from myself,’’
she said. “If I get mad or
down in a match, my game usually
goes downhill. “So, I focus
on giving my best effort and
staying positive.’’
An honor student, Stallings
hopes to continue her tennis
career in college. She’s not sure
what school she’ll attend, but
she’s leaning on a southern college
and a science major.
Relying on a competitive philosophy
of working hard to win,
Stallings also is a firm believer
of striving to reach her potential.
“Having fun and enjoying
athletics is important, but fun
usually occurs through winning,’’
she emphasized. “Winning
is important.’’
Very aware that athletics
provide a venue for learning
life lessons, Stallings lists teamwork,
time management and
leadership as key lessons that
can be learned. “I try to be a
good teammate,’’ she noted.
“And, even if you’re not a captain,
sports can teach you to be
a leader. Sports also teach you
how to balance academics and
use your time efficiently.’’
Tim Smith Hones His Focus on Baseball
By Christopher Tremblay
As a three-sport athlete at Millis
High School, Tim Smith found
himself suiting up for basketball,
baseball and football for the Mohawks.
He began shooting baskets
at a very young age and began
playing the sport year-round,
however, as he got older, he let go
of basketball to concentrate on his
back for the baseball season, but
he worked extremely hard and
was able to make it back to play
the entire season,” Millis Coach
Mike Carter said.
With his injury slowing down
his junior campaign on the diamond,
Smith decided to take precautions
in the sport he loves the
most.
season finale, he had two big hits
against Pope John Paul and his
confidence was soaring.
“His sophomore campaign,
we were struggling as a team, and
his presence in the lineup rejuvenated
us and gave us life again
in the lineup. He’s a professional
player and he helped up with that
big win over DS,” Carter said.
“He has an impressive mentality
with a great mindset of the game.
He’ll take any advice that is given
to him and work on improving it.”
The senior first baseman will
find himself batting in the heart of
Coach Carter’s lineup either at the
third hole or the cleanup position.
“I’m a contact hitter with some
power, but I’m not going to be hitting
any 400 foot homers anytime
soon,” he said. “I would like to
work on my swing and improve
my power hitting.”
Coach Carter believes that
Smith has come a long way at the
plate since his freshman year at
Millis.
“He really has come a long
way in terms of power and
has worked hard to develop his
swing,” the Coach said. “We are
going to lean on him heavily this
year.”
As Millis battles for the right
to get back to the State Tournament,
Smith is hoping that when
once his high school career comes
to an end that he can still continue
to play baseball on the next level.
Smith will be attending Westfield
State College next fall majoring in
Criminal Justice, but he is hoping
that he’ll be playing baseball for
the Division 3 Owls as a walk on.
Great physical therapy and a
lot of work has put Tim Smith
back in the swing again in Millis
baseball.
first love – baseball. Then during
his junior campaign on the gridiron,
he tore his labrum, and his
football season was done.
Original diagnostics showed
that he most likely wasn’t going to
see any action that spring on the
baseball diamond, but Smith had
different ideas.
“They told me that I would
probably be out about six months,
but I had a really good physical
therapist and four or five months
later, I was good to go,” the Millis
senior said. “The football injury
slowed my baseball season down,
and at first, I wasn’t fully confident
in my arm, so I started playing fall
ball for the first time to build up
my stamina.”
Returning ahead of schedule
allowed Smith to take part in the
Mohawks season.
“Tim wasn’t even expected
“When I got hurt in football,
it put me behind the eight ball
for the baseball season,” the first
baseman said. “I didn’t want that
to happen again, so I didn’t play
football this past season, but instead
concentrated on baseball.”
Smith began playing first base
early in his career. He also dabbled
at the hot corner as well, but felt
that first was a better fit for him,
especially by the time he got to
high school, where the Mohawks
already had themselves a capable
third baseman on the team.
“I think it was around third or
fourth grade when I first started
playing first base and just stuck
with it,” Smith said. “I played
the position well before I actually
had a first baseman mitt. In fact,
I originally found my first mitt at
the ball park.”
Upon entering Millis High
School, Smith found himself
fielding ground balls for the Junior
Varsity team his first two seasons,
but with only two games remaining
in the regular season during
his sophomore year he got the call
up to the Varsity team. In his very
first Varsity game, he went 3-3 at
the plate with a RBI in a 2-1 win
over Dover Sherborn, and in the
TC Runner John O’Sullivan Keeps Pushing His Limits
By Christopher Tremblay
Growing up in Medway, John
O’Sullivan enjoyed playing soccer,
and when high school rolled
around, he opted for greater
opportunity and attended Tri
County Regional Vocational
High School. It was here in
Franklin that he first was introduced
to track.
“I had never run or thought
about running except for in soccer,”
the Medway resident said.
“It was my freshman year, and
soccer captain Dan Elliot told me
that I should join the track team
to get in better shape, which
would help me in soccer. By my
sophomore year, I fell in love with
the sport.”
Originally, O’Sullivan found
himself running the mile, then
in his junior year he added the
800, and this season he plans on
attempting the high jump. Although
he had run for the better
part of his life on the soccer field,
running track was a totally different
animal for O’Sullivan.
“The only type of running
that I had done was through soccer,
so this was definitely a new
experience,” he said. “It was difficult
at first and hard to pick up,
but it did get easier, and by the
third week of the season I had it
down.”
During that freshman campaign,
O’Sullivan recorded a best
time of 5:20; while his best time
now is at 5:08.
“His freshman season, we
found that he needed to add a
lot of physical strength. John had
Medway resident and Tri-County senior John O’Sullivan made the
move from soccer to track when he started high school. Since then, his
coaches have helped him test his limits.
the will, but not the natural ability
to be a runner,” Tri-Country
track Coach Seth Curran said.
“His reach ascended his grasp,
but over the past two years, he
has made great strides. He puts
Following his freshman season
O’Sullivan found that he needed
to do more with track in the offseason,
so he attended winter
workouts at the school where he
was running on treadmills and
worked on core exercises to get
ready for the next season.
Through the first few years,
the Medway runner would occasionally
find himself finishing
in the top three, but never had
himself a first-place finish. That
is, until his junior year, where
he was the first to cross the finish
line against Southeaster and
Bristol Plymouth.
“It was a pretty awesome
feeling to have finally won a
race. There are so many kids
that run the mile that it makes
it hard to win,” O’Sullivan said.
“I had been able to stay with
the top running pack, and during
the last lap I really wanted
to win, so I kicked it up.”
Having been a decent miler for
the Cougars, O’Sullivan added
the 800 to his repertoire, or shall
we say, his coach added it to his
events. To date, his best time in
the event is 2:20.
“My distance coach helped
me with the decision to run the
800 my junior year. Actually, he
just stuck me in the race one day
and didn’t even tell me,” he said.
“The two are very different; in
the mile I go at a slower speed
and pace myself, but in the 800
you go at a much quicker pace.
The 800 was difficult at first, as
I had to pace myself for two laps
instead of the 4 in the mile.”
Much like his junior year
when his coach inserted a new
event into his daily routines, his
new distance coach did the same
this pre-season.
“She saw me doing the high
jump at practice one day and
told me that I should give it a try
on a meet,” he said. “I have yet
to take part in the high jump in a
meet yet, but I will soon.”
Entering his fourth and final
season with the TC Track and
Field team, O’Sullivan is looking
to end his career with goals of
breaking a five-minute mile and
a time of 2:10 in the 800, while
making it to the states. He has no
plans for the high jump, yet.
“Having never done the high
jump before and only taking it
on one week before the season,
I have no idea how I’ll do, so I
have no goals,” O’Sullivan said.
“Personally I want to go to the
States (Tournament) this year.
It is definitely something that I
can and will accomplish before I
leave Tri-County.”
Register O’Donnell Promotes Protection
Against Real Estate Fraud
Norfolk County Register of
Deeds William P. O’Donnell
today reminded residents that
over 750 homeowners have
signed up for the free on-line
Consumer Notification Service
offered by the Registry to protect
Norfolk County property owners
against fraud.
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation,
(F.B.I.) continues
to assign resources to combat
property and mortgage fraud.
Multiple jurisdictions across the
country have reported individuals
recording fraudulent documents
and making it appear like
they own another person’s home
or property. While we have been
fortunate that this problem has
not revealed itself here in Norfolk
County, I want to make sure
my office is proactively and vigorously
protecting consumers,”
noted Register O’Donnell.
Any owner of real property
in the twenty-eight communities
comprising Norfolk County can
sign-up for the Consumer Notification
Service free of charge
by doing the following: Go to
the Registry’s website, www.norfolkdeeds.org,
and click on the
Consumer Notification Service
Get Consumer “Alerts” button to
complete the initial registration.
From there, follow the remaining
sign-up instructions.
Once you have signed up for
the service, each subscriber will
be able to input two names, individual
or business, and the corresponding
city or town in Norfolk
County for monitoring. They can
monitor their real estate for such
activities as changes in deeds,
mortgages, mortgage discharges,
non-mortgage liens, Homesteads
or other land documents
that might be recorded against
the property. O’Donnell stated,
“This is an easy process to signup
for and will only take a few
minutes of your time. This program
will not prevent the fraud
but it will allow residents to find
out about it in order to address
the fraud quickly.”
The Register of Deeds will
also host a free informational
seminar on how to research
computer assisted land records
at the Norfolk County Registry
of Deeds in Dedham from 4:30
Client Testimonial to Robin & Mark Spangenberg:
“Robin can best be described as an agent with premier professionalism,
knowledge and expertise. Along with her husband Mark, the Spangenbergs
guided us through a selling process that can be very stressful but also exciting
and most of all rewarding. During our selling process there were so many highs
and lows, but the sign of a superior agent is one who can keep you on an even
keel and that is what Robin and Mark did for us. Our experience with Robin was
amazing and her knowledge of pricing the house in the current market was right
on the money. We would not hesitate to use Robin again in the future and highly
recommend her to anyone interested in selling. Thank you so much Robin and
Mark.” Robert and Georgette Malouf, Millis
