What is <strong>Interim</strong> <strong>Management</strong>?<br />

Who are Ch<strong>in</strong>a's<br />

<strong>Interim</strong> Managers?<br />

Expatriate executives have worked <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a and<br />

throughout Asia for decades. While some came <strong>in</strong><br />

on expatriate contracts that were meant to be<br />

short term, others stayed <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a by renew<strong>in</strong>g<br />

their contracts, mov<strong>in</strong>g on to a different company,<br />

or becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terim managers.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are currently very few senior <strong>in</strong>terim<br />

executives <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a who can enact big changes<br />

with their experience. Given the small number <strong>of</strong><br />

quality <strong>in</strong>terim managers the best are hard to<br />

acquire as these <strong>in</strong>dividuals are always <strong>in</strong> demand.<br />

Regardless <strong>of</strong> the state <strong>of</strong> the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese economy<br />

there will always be a place for good <strong>in</strong>terim<br />

managers as companies make changes or have<br />

transition times no matter what the sector or state<br />

<strong>of</strong> the market be.<br />

A large percentage <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terim managers <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

right now are foreign executives. Although there<br />

are some Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong>terim managers, most do not<br />

complete regular assignments. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

are several reasons why there is such an<br />

imbalance between foreign and local <strong>in</strong>terim<br />

managers <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. One is cultural differences, as<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese society values security and the precarious<br />

short-term assignments <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terim management is<br />

managers <strong>in</strong> the 30-40 age range. Compared to<br />

other countries <strong>in</strong> Europe, where 54% <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terim<br />

managers are with<strong>in</strong> the 51-60 age group, Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>terim managers are fairly young, possibly due to<br />

an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly entrepreneurial m<strong>in</strong>dset <strong>of</strong> the<br />

younger generation <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese executives.<br />

In fact, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese bus<strong>in</strong>esses are lack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

qualified <strong>in</strong>terim managers to address the many<br />

economic and structural changes happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a right now.

Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong>dustrialized quickly, becom<strong>in</strong>g a manufactur<strong>in</strong>g giant much<br />

faster than many other countries. However, now economic growth<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to services, which not all managers are equipped<br />

for. Many <strong>of</strong> the key problems fac<strong>in</strong>g the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese economy are<br />

partly due to lack <strong>of</strong> experience, which <strong>in</strong>terim management can<br />

address.<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a faces a talent crisis with executives, as local talent may not<br />

have the experience to be effective, while expatriate talent may<br />

lack the cultural sensitivity to make a team successful. <strong>The</strong> rapid<br />

development <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sector means that many<br />

workers are relatively new to the job. Frontl<strong>in</strong>e managers lack the<br />

expertise to identify problems that typically arise with new plants<br />

and ventures.<br />

service sector. Ch<strong>in</strong>ese managers are not used to restructur<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

downsiz<strong>in</strong>g a bus<strong>in</strong>ess s<strong>in</strong>ce the economy had been grow<strong>in</strong>g so<br />

rapidly over the past decades. For many Ch<strong>in</strong>ese managers there is<br />

limited experience <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g organizational change processes.<br />

<strong>Interim</strong> managers would be able to assist dur<strong>in</strong>g times<br />

<strong>of</strong> transition such as major restructur<strong>in</strong>g, and provide objective<br />

advice to managers who may be uncomfortable with the chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

situation.<br />

With the economic and structural changes be<strong>in</strong>g made to the<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese economy bus<strong>in</strong>esses are need<strong>in</strong>g to rapidly adapt,<br />

sometimes us<strong>in</strong>g managers with limited experience <strong>in</strong><br />

transitional situations such as downsiz<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>Interim</strong> management <strong>in</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a is a potential solution that can help bus<strong>in</strong>esses dur<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

transitions, sett<strong>in</strong>g them on a path <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement,<br />

rather than try<strong>in</strong>g to just get by.<br />

Although there is still some resistance to <strong>in</strong>terim management <strong>in</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terim managers seems to be becom<strong>in</strong>g a more<br />
