Art BGCA Finalists Last year, thousands of hopeful students from all over the United States entered their artwork to Boys & Girls Club of America’s (BGCA) prestigious National Fine Arts contest. Locally, children from both School Age Care and Youth Center submitted over 200 pieces of unique art ranging from drawings and paintings to sculptures and photography. Of those submissions, 20 were selected to compete at the regional level and five advanced to nationals. Amongst BGCA’s national finalist is twelve-year-old Eden Reed of the Youth Center. Engrained within her – art plays a vital role in her life and has shaped her into the person she is today. “Art is a part of who I am. Art pushes me beyond my comfort zone and forces me to think outside of the box. My favorite part about the creative process is seeing the finished product. To me, art is anything you create,” Reed expressed. Reed’s artwork was inspired by the beauty of the world around her, “The earth is such a beautiful thing, I couldn’t possibly replicate its magnificence, but I wanted to portray my own perspective, my own impression,” Reed said. The BGCA encourages youth from all over to express themselves through a variety of art including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and sculpture. These unique artworks are first put on display at both local and regional exhibits for the community to enjoy. From here, a panel of distinguished judges select artworks to be presented at the National Fine Arts Exhibit. Being selected to have her art potentially exhibited on a national-level is motivation for Reed. “I have always tried to put to paper what was in my mind, but could never do it until this piece. Advancing to nationals is a great feat for me, it’s validation that I’m growing as an artist and pushes me to want to do even better,” Reed said. Outside of creating masterpieces, Reed is passionate about running and is heavily involved in Yokota’s Youth Sports Program – playing softball, basketball, track, soccer, gymnastics and adding volleyball to the roster this year. With all of her talents and ambitions, she has a bright future ahead of her! 374 FSS supports children’s creativity and we congratulate all of Yokota’s regional winners and national finalists! The BGCA empowers youth by providing programs which allow for individual growth through youth sports, health and wellness, education and arts. The arts division provides programs for youth which are designed to nurture creativity and self-expression.
